Be still and know that I am God. ~Psalm 46:10

I spent some time at a Trappist Abbey south of Portland toward the beginning of my sabbatical. I thought it would be a peaceful and restorative time. It was. I took long hikes on the property, had quiet meals with the other retreatants and worshipped at least twice a day. I napped and read and meditated. But what I did not expect was how agitated I became on my second to the last day. I was not at all at peace. There were old resentments that surfaced, old injustices that I had endured, as well as fear about the future. “What happened to all that peace,” I wondered.

Well, part of the problem with doing interior work, just like when you clean out a closet or the garage, you raise some dust, or you create an even bigger mess before you can clean out what needs to go. I had spent enough time with myself (with my cell phone off), that all this old pain re-surfaced. And then I felt angry with myself for not having “let go of all that old stuff.” It was not until I went to worship and heard the brothers chanting the psalms that I could find that peace again. Worship was the antidote that I needed. Meditation, in and of itself, cannot bring peace. I believe that meditation and worship can. Simply stopping and being present to yourself, your emotional state, your spiritual attitude, can let pain, old or new, physical or emotional, come to your awareness. This is a step toward maturity, but it can bring more agitation than peace.

Worship on the other hand, is an acknowledgement that I am not God and only God is God, and God loves me and forgives me, gives his body and blood to me and has work for me to do in God’s Kingdom. That gives me peace. Every time.

So, as you live your life and as we live life together as a congregation, I admonish you to worship whenever and wherever you can. I know that this is not a great revelation to most of you but take it as a gentle reminder. Amidst the storms and waves of this life there is a safe harbor in the One Who Saves.

God’s never-failing peace be with you. Pr. Bob Albing

LCM Book Group. Sarah Mackey, back in England from

California where she now lives, and works is not in a good place. She is about to get divorced after seventeen years of marriage and her 40th birthday is fast approaching. Out walking in the countryside, she meets Eddie, a local carpenter and they instantly click—it is like they have always known each other. In seven short days, Sarah falls hopelessly in love with Eddie who is about to leave for a pre-booked holiday in Spain and promises to call Sarah from the airport. But he doesn't call, he doesn't answer her emails and posts nothing on social media. She is convinced that something terrible has happened to him and sets out to find him in spite of her friends misgivings. Ghosted by Rosie Walsh is a magical story with a dark secret that keeps the reader enthralled until the truth is revealed. Bring a friend and join the LCM Book Group to discuss this interesting summer read on Tuesday, August 20th, 5:30pm at The Well-Read Moose Bookstore in Riverstone.

All are welcome at any Book Group gathering! For more information, contact Kristine Wold 208-660-4410.

Friends & Food

(previously Dinner for 7)

A way for people to get to know others in the congregation on a personal level.

On Sunday, September 8th at 5pm in Schmidt Hall, there will be a potluck for everyone that wants to participate. At that potluck, the names will be put into a group of eight or more.

This group would go from September to May and have the summer off. The first meeting would be at one of the participants’ house, a restaurant, etc. At the first meeting, another participant would suggest, with the help of the rest of the group, when and where they would meet next. At each meeting a different participant would suggest another place. Since they have nine months for the group to meet, they could work around vacations, snowbirds, etc. One option is to meet every other month. As the year goes on, if new people join the church they could be put in a group.

Here are some ideas: • Host/hostess has the main dish and others signup for appetizer, salad, vegetable, bread, etc. Also, participants would bring their own drinks. • Go to a restaurant for the entre e and then to their house for the dessert or the other way around. • Go to a winery for the outing. • Go out to eat and then to a concert or museum, etc.

If you cannot make it to the potluck but are interested,

contact Dave or Pam Minor, 360-771-8010 or

[email protected].

youth & family activities

August 2019

Calling all prayer warriors! August is my month for planning for what will happen from September to May. I’m asking that you keep all programs and activities in prayer as we forge ahead in faith building. My goal is to reach as many of our families in as many ways as I can to provide faith building activities for all ages with

my focus on our children and youth. Following is a list of the programs and activities planned for the upcoming year.

Faith Builders—Sunday for grades K-5 will take place between services on Sunday mornings. Sunday Chat for grades 6-12 will also take place between services on Sunday mornings. Faith Builders—Wednesday for grades K-12 will take place on Wednesday evenings. Youth Group for grades 6-12 will usually take place on the 3rd Friday of the month.

Lutherhaven has two winter camps that our youth can attend.

Confirmation will begin for those in grade 6. I have been meeting with Rebecca Smith, assistant director of camp Lutherhaven and Pastors from the area and a new confirmation program will be implemented this year in conjunction with a grant that Lutherhaven has received. Confirmation students, entering grade 6 and up, will meet for a fall retreat at Shoshone base camp, a winter camp at Lutherhaven, and once a month at rotating churches. The program will be a two-year program. I am very excited about this program and ask for special prayers for its success.

2021 the ELCA National Youth Gathering will be held in Minneapolis. We are planning to take any youth grades 8-12 who wish to attend.

Along with prayer, I can use help in the following areas. • I will be putting up a sign-up sheet soon for people to help with dinners for Faith Builders—Wednesday. I will have suggested menus or if you just want to pick up pizza I’ll order if you set up, serve, and clean up. • We also need fund raisers to help prepare to get us to the national gathering. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the youth, but we will need to raise several thousand dollars to help get them there. I need suggestions but also people to take charge of the fund raiser and help pull it off.

Our children and youth are not just the church of the future they are the church now and I appreciate your prayers and support as we help them to grow in their faith.

I’m a Lutheran: New Members—The Panther’s (Dan, Evonne, Kristin) by Dave Jacobson

Dan and Kristin joined LCM while Evonne maintains her membership at a church in Spokane. The family is a great addition to the LCM family. The Panther’s are an active family with a wide array of interests and activities.

Kristin works in Dietary at Kootenai Health and is a recumbent bike rider. She and Evonne participate in the annual Women’s Pedalfest, a 25 mile benefit ride. Kristin hikes, spin cast fishes, and recently recumbent biked the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes. Evonne retired after 39 years as a first and second grade teacher in the Central Valley School District. She has many sport interests on her activity resume. Dan’s profession was a software engineer for Comin-co, a phosphate fertilizer company, and Premera Blue Cross. His professional experience serves him well as the council liai-son of the LCM technology committee.

Dan and Evonne snow ski at Mt Spokane and Lookout Pass be-side kayak, snowshoe, hike, road bike, and boat the rest of the year. Earlier this year, they travelled in France and Switzer-land. Dan also fly fishes on the north fork of the CDA.

LCM welcomes the Panther’s! This article was inspired by the “I am Lutheran” series in the Living Lutheran magazine.

LCM Stewardship Corner STEWARDSHIP: what does that word mean? Do you ever hear anyone speak it in conversation other than at church? The average “Joe” on the street wouldn’t know how to use it in a sentence. Unfortunately, even church members only associate stewardship with “that annual fall campaign asking for money to satisfy the church’s budget needs.” Might there be a better word? After all, the question is not, “What is my share in helping meet our church’s budget?” The question is, “What is God’s share in caring for, influencing and di-recting my life?” (and not only during our fall stewardship campaign!) We must strive to nurture an abiding presence of God daily throughout the year. In last month’s newsletter, Laurie Johnson suggested that “stewardship” is living out every aspect of the Christian life.

I suggest we consider “stewardship” happening each morning when we awaken to the new day. As we grow spiritually in a loving relationship with our Lord and Savior, we take “stewardship” to a new, exciting higher level. Getting dressed, giving thanks for food, praying over disturbing headlines in the

morning paper, greeting our neighbor with a wave knowing God is our motivation for loving them. In Luke 4, Jesus says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” It’s true, without food we will wither and eventually die. We need bread. But Jesus says there is something even more important. More than food, we need a living

relationship with Him, to sense His presence in prayer, His purposes in study, His joy in fellowship and His strength in worship. Life needs the Savior who promises He is here with us….and that dear friends, is STEWARDSHIP!

2019 Synod Assembly Report Thank you for letting us represent you at the 2019 Eastern Washington-Idaho Synod Assembly. The theme of the assembly was “We Walk Together.” Two members from the Ulanga Kilombero Diocese of Tanzania (our companion synod) attended the assembly and participated in various ways throughout the weekend.

This was the last assembly for the EWAID Synod. After much discussion, we voted to change the name of our synod to “Northwest Intermountain Synod.” The reason for the change is that our synod now includes congregations in NE Oregon and SW Wyoming. The name change has to be ratified at the ELCA National Assembly, August 5-10, 2019.

We attended inspiring worship services and workshops and we elected new Synod Council and Committee Members. It was wonderful to see the outpouring of thanks for our own Gary Gemar, who “retired” as the Vice President of the Synod Council. He served 14 years on the Council, 9 as VP. Thank you Gary!

Last year it was voted to hold Synod As-sembly in odd numbered years. During even numbered years there will be small-er, one-day regional gatherings. Our con-gregation will attend the gathering held in Pullman on April 25th, 2020. ~Dan & Jody Harris

the NEWS about LAM Christian

Academy as tenant... LAM Christian Academy began as Lutheran Academy of the Master in 1996 when Shelly Matthews started a pre-school two days per week for twelve children in what is now Schmidt Hall. With the blessing and financial support of the Lutheran Church of the Master congregation, the school grew and moved into the classrooms facing Ramsey Road. Soon after, the gymnasium and classrooms facing south were built and the entire building was named “The Gathering Place.” Lutheran Academy of the Master then became LAM Christian Academy, a private Christian school serving K-5th grade.

Although Lutheran Church of the Master offered an extended seven year contract to LAM in July 2018, their Board President, Peter Fitzmyers responded in June 2019 that,

“Regretfully, LAM Christian Academy cannot accept the lease terms offered……continued long-term use of the LCM property is not in the best interest of LAM Christian Academy……It is now our intent to move the school as soon as possible.”

At a Special Congregational Meeting on July 14, 2019, Lutheran Church of the Master voted, by a two-thirds majority, to allow the lease with LAM to expire on July 31, 2019 and to pursue other options for tenancy of the Gathering Place.

It has been a blessing to both LAM and LCM to have had these years together in joint ministry and we pray that both will continue to grow and flourish in bringing the message of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to the community.

First Lutheran Church | 526 S Olive Ave, Sandpoint

Youth from First Lutheran Church explored the causes of racism and discrimination after racist CDs were left on cars at Sandpoint High School. They utilized Design for Change’s Feel, Imagine, Do, Share, Design Thinking process to gain empathy and create solutions to solve this problem within Sandpoint. To do this, they created an Instagram account @7BLOVE_Project to spread love and their message. They have also invited Rev. Alex Schmidt to FLC to give his workshops on bias and racism for adults.

This event is free thanks to a grant from the Sandpoint Human Rights Task Force. To register or for more information,

THANK YOU for volunteering to serve your church during Sunday morning worship. Your service is greatly appreciated. Since we cannot anticipate vacations, work schedules, emergencies, or other situations, please trade with someone else on the schedule when there is a conflict; then contact the church office of the change, by the Wednesday before, so it can be reflected in the bulletin.

Notes from the Treasurer... • Thank you for your faithful giving. Through June 30th are doing well financially, but could be a little short of our budget by the end of the year. If we do not get a new tenant, the Council will have to make some adjustments to the budget. Be sure to come to the August 4th Special Congregational Meeting.

• The monthly financial report is posted on the bulletin board in Schmidt Hall.

• Just like you, our bills keep coming in the summer. If you aren’t going to be in church you may always mail in your offering or drop it by the office.

• If you would like offering envelopes, please let Romona in the office know so that we can get you set up!
