MISSIONTo promote the arts and sciences on Long Beach Island and in the surrounding communities by enlightening, educating, and stimulating thought and discussion about current trends in the arts and sciences and by providing broad educational and cultural programs for all ages.

historyDr. Boris Blai, a student of sculptor August Rodin and founding dean of the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, established the LBIF in 1948 as a facility that would foster the talents of individuals. The LBIF has built on Dr. Blai’s original vision, offering thousands

of exhibitions and educational programs to the community for over 65 years. Now open year-round, the LBIF serves as a critical cultural asset and a source of enjoyment and learning for people of all ages.

Challenge and expand your notions about what books are, can be, and how they work. On Saturday, students will learn a variety of simple bindings culminating with the Japanese binding. Class time will include a mix of painting and discussion in order to hone our skills and improve our practice. We will focus on understanding how to translate form onto the two dimensional surface, the effects of light and shadow, the relationship between warm and cool colors, and more.

Working directly from observation, both in the studio and from the landscape as well as from a model, students will gain a wider understanding of what is possible in painting and then how to turn those possibilities into habits. Juried Exhibit. Your day will begin with wet in wet painting exercises to practice controlling the paint while maintaining the fluidity of the watercolor. The mixing of vibrant colors will be discussed as you learn to choose the right transparent

on functional pottery. With form, surface and color, learn how to make your pots speak. Techniques will include subtle altering of wheel thrown work while wet, scraffitto and stains on dry greenware, underglaze drawing and painting on bisque, finishing glaze-fired ware with fired-on ceramic decals to add text, or applying gold and silver lusters. In learning to use and implement these techniques and materials, students will be given insight, ideas, and instruction on how to tell a story by creating and implementing original images and/or text on a pot’s surface. POTS WITH STORIESAugust 18-August 229:30am-4:30pmDaniel TeranGet ready to submerge into your subconscious while floating back to the surface to find structure and humility in utility! No, this is not a sweat lodge acid trip, but rather an opportunity to get lost in making and explore the narrative vessel as a means to share intimate ideas and bring nourishment to our bodies. In this five-day workshop, Teran will demonstrate a variety

of techniques he uses to discover pottery forms and the stream of consciousness drawings that go on them. From the use of techniques adapted from printmaking, such as silk-screening and etching, to surrealist drawing and form building exercises, workshop participants willhave a chance to create their ownvessels that act as stages for personal narratives. CERAMICS RESIDENCY PROGRAMThe LBIF’s Ceramics Residency Program allows potters the opportunity to work in a communal studio. Residents receive a dedicated wheel or handbuilding space, as well as storage space in the studio, glazes, and firings, for durations spanning the summer or winter months. PRIVATE LESSONSGet one-on-one instruction from an experienced potter. Kerith or Jerry will guide and help you perfect your skills. For the new potter, they will introduce you to the world of ceramics and give you techniques to become the potter you have always wanted to be. MEDITATION IN MOTION Sunday, August 10 • 1-5pmThis class will focus in on the idea of “centering/meditating” and how that transfers to all areas of our lives. Successfully working on the wheel requires that we are able to focus in and “center.” Practical

tools will be demonstrated so students can learn to work with larger pieces of clay to take the “struggle” out of centering. We will learn to understand the use of our own body weight and how to “work with the clay” by “listening” through our hands. This class is perfect for the student new to the potter’s wheel or for the more seasoned potter who wishes to take their practice on the wheel one step further. REGISTRATION & PAYMENTThe LBIF accepts cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, and debit. Full tuition is due at the time of registration. The LBIF may decline an individual’s enrollment or participation at its discretion.

MATERIALS LIST & FEEIt is the student’s responsibility to request a copy of all supply lists at the front desk prior to class. It is the student’s responsibility to pay all material fees to the instructor or the LBIF as listed in the class description.

CLASS CANCELLATIONSThe LBIF reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment or in the case of an emergency. In the event the LBIF cancels a class, students will be notified and full tuition and fee will be credited or refunded.

WITHDRAWALSClass credit will be issued if withdrawal occurs at least one week prior to the first day of the course. No class credit will be issued one week prior to class beginning or after class has begun. NO REFUNDS will be given.

SCHOLARSHIPSLimited scholarships are available. Please send an email to [email protected] or letter of request to the LBIF, 120 Long Beach Blvd., Loveladies, NJ, 08008.

PUBLICITYThe LBIF reserves the right to use photos taken during classes and other programs for publicity purposes. Registration in a class or participation in any event gives LBIF permission to use images for publicity purposes without further consent or compensation.

STUDENT PROPERTYThe LBIF is not responsible for artwork and other property left on the premises and has no liability if such property is lost, stolen, or damaged, except in instances when artwork is displayed in gallery exhibitions. Artwork or property left two weeks after the conclusion of a class may be discarded.

EMERGENCY FORMSEvery child attending an LBIF program without a parent is required to complete a Child Emergency Form and submit it to the main office. Students are encouraged to inform the main office if they have a medical condition that the staff or faculty should be aware of in case of emergency. Forms are kept on file for one year. The form can be obtained in the main office.
