  • Neglected to the Nth Degree – Stone County

Life for Sid, a four-year-old West Highland Terrier mix, had beenanything but easy. On October 16, our Animal Cruelty TaskForce found him living in filth—the floors covered with trash, animal waste and grime. Fleas crawled all over him, and so muchof his hair was missing that it was difficult to determine his breed.

Walking through the rest of the house, we discovered a BassettHound whose nails were so long they had grown into his paw. AndSid alerted us to a third dog, and the biggest heartbreak of therescue. There in the bathroom lay a Beagle. Sid stood beside hisfriend and desperately tried to nudge him awake. But it was toolate. “It was a heart-wrenching sight, and one we won’t soonforget,” said Mike Perkins, director of the HSMO Animal Cruelty Task Force.

In cooperation with the Stone County Sheriff’s Office, ACTrescued Sid along with 14 other dogs, 10 horses, five cats, achicken and a duck from a property west of Galena. One horsewas more than 600 pounds underweight and so weak he couldbarely get on and off the trailer.

    Released from Misery –Johnson County

Jack spent his life crammed in a filthy cage, unable to seethrough his matted, tangled hair. His poor body was infested with fleas and he was in pain from a skin infection. Jack’s life was miserable.

October 30, the HSMO Animal Cruelty Task Force (ACT)rescued Jack and 44 other animals, including Chihuahuas, Shi

Tzus and a rabbit, from an unlicensedbreeder. Many werehoused in stacked, wire crates with twoto three animals per crate. Piles of animal wastereached a foot highin some places. The stench wasoverwhelming.Little to no food orwater was availablefor Jack and hisfellow animals, and some were very thin.

Starved to Death – Maries County

Responding to a report of animalabuse, the MariesCounty Sheriff’sOffice foundemaciated animalsand deceasedanimal carcasseson the property.

On September27, ACT teammembers rescued40 animals (dogs, rabbits, horsesand goats) from a property north of Vienna. The animals had littleaccess to food, fresh water or adequate shelter. The water that wasavailable to the dogs was contaminated with urine and feces.

Mango, a severely malnourished and pregnant mare, immediately went to an equine emergency center. Sadly, she didnot survive, nor did one other horse. Mango’s foal, Kiwi, is beinghand-fed by staff and is expected to recover.

Several goats, pigs, sheep and cattle remain. The MissouriDepartment of Agriculture has discussed appropriate care of thoseanimals with the owner. The Humane Society of Missouri will bemonitoring the property for their well being.

    Winter 20134

Director of Shelter Medicine Dr. Mark Wright and HSMOVeterinarian Dr. Matthew Shivelbine wasted no time evaluatingand treating the critically injured dog. It was touch and go for thefirst few hours. The veterinarians had concerns about shock, dehydration and loss of blood, and infection. And Trooper wasobviously underweight, indicating possible malnutrition beforethis incident.

Five days later the young, resilient dog was still hanging inthere, tail wagging, despite the fact that all of his legs were injuredand there was fear that one leg might have to be amputated. Bynow he had been dubbed Trooper, a fitting name that was justwhat the doctor ordered. “Fortunately, Trooper had no seriousinternal injuries,” said Dr. Wright. “We worked hard to fend off

serious infection and he ate and drank well almost from the beginning.”

In another five days, Trooper was taking a few steps andenjoying a toy. Doctors determined he was healing well and his leg might be saved.

Treating the Whole DogAs Trooper improved physically, his rehabilitation transitioned

to the next phase—behavior and socialization. “He’s still verymuch a puppy,” said Shelter Animal Behavior Manager LindaCampbell. “We are working with Trooper to make sure he iscomfortable around people and has good puppy manners. We are also having lots of fun playing with him and watching his engaging personality emerge.”

Outpouring of Support“We have received overwhelming interest in helping

Trooper,” said Kathy Warnick, president of the Humane Society. “His story really hit a chord withanimal lovers everywhere. Cards, letters, gifts, and donations have come in from allover the world! We truly are grateful.”

Ongoing InvestigationWorking with the St. Louis City Police

Department and the St. Louis City CircuitAttorney’s Warrant Office, HSMO’s AnimalCruelty Task Force provided key videosurveillance evidence and extensiveinvestigative and veterinary reports whichculminated in a charge of animal abusebeing filed Dec. 14, 2012 against a personbelieved to be responsible for the injuries toTrooper. “Since the day of the incident,HSMO’s animal cruelty investigators workeddiligently developing and following leads, conducting follow-up interviews andcanvassing neighborhoods in a determinedeffort to gather and provide the evidence

needed to prosecute this case,” said Mike Perkins, director of Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Task Force. “We owe it to Trooper, the millions of people around the worldappalled by this crime and to our community to ensure that thoseresponsible are held accountable.”

The efforts to rescue, save and find a forever home for Troopertruly were made by the entire HSMO organization. “We haveteams of people working the investigation; seeing to Trooper’smedical care, comfort and adoption; and organizational supportteams working to make sure we can continue this work 365 days a year,” noted Debbie Hill, vice president of Operations for theHumane Society. “Unfortunately, we deal with animal cruelty and neglect every day, so it’s heartening to be reminded thatthere are so many good, caring people out there who want to put an end to it.”

    Is this Dog Dangerous?

    Winter 2013

Many dogs come through our doors with unknown histories. Is the dog trustworthy? Or might it hurt a person or another animal?

Objective testing standards called Safety Assessment forEvaluating Rehoming (SAFER) help identify the risk of futureaggression.

“We use the SAFER assessment as a tool to bring out responsespredictive of future aggression,” said Linda Campbell, ShelterAnimal Behavior manager.

The assessment measures:• Comfort level with restraint and touch

    • Reaction to new experiences including movement and sound

    • Bite inhibition

    • Behavior around food and toys

    • Arousal level toward other dogs

Dogs exhibiting dangerous levels of aggression cannot be offered for adoption. “We have an obligation to our adopters that the dogs we make available are healthy and not a danger to peopleor other pets,” explained Debbie Hill, vice president of Operations.“We cannot knowingly offer an aggressive dog for adoption.”

Shelters that employ SAFER-assessment or other research-basedbehavior assessments report fewer complaints of aggression, moreadoptions and better client interactions, according to its developer Dr. Emily C. Weiss of the ASPCA.

Correction The Winter 2012 issue of Tails Magazine featured the HSMO Adoption Program, saluting the menand women who take care of shelter animals. It contained a quote incorrectly attributed to Julia Kelley, dataspecialist and certified SAFER evaluator. The words incorrectly described how we identify the risk of futureaggression. The story above, “Is This Dog Dangerous,” accurately describes the process. –Editors

‘Diva’ Cat Rescued from DitchThings did not look good for littleMud Pie when she was rescued by the Humane Society of Missouri.

The eight-week-old calico, trapped in a constructiontrench, was dirty, dehydrated and near death.Veterinary staff nurtured her through a six-week-longrecuperation.

Her new family learned of the Mud Pie’s brush with death only after they’d adopted her.

“We didn’t know she was a star,” said Sally Bell, referring to thepublicity the rescued kitten received, “but she knows it. She’s afeisty diva and hilarious to watch.” She was re-named Jema, using first initials of the four grandchildren of Jack and SallyBell (Jared, Emma, Mackenzie and Austin).

Jema’s photo now appears on a Humane Society van, no surprise to the feline diva who expects star treatment.

Jema has taken a shine to 18-pound cat Coconut, also adopted from the Humane Society.“She jumps on him, lays on top of him and chews on him,” said Bell. “When he’s had

enough he opens the closet door, goes in and shuts it.” Three-year-old Gisa, also rescued, issomewhat of a sourpuss, “but Jema doesn’t care,” added Bell. “She pounces on her, too.”“I know it takes a lot of money to help the animals,” she added. “Jema’s medical expenses

must have been enormous. Anything I can do to help the Humane Society raise funds, I will do. ”

Fostering Second ChancesHow does the HumaneSociety help animals that:

    • Arrive nursing a litter,

    • Are weaned but too young to be adopted,

    • Need to recover from injuries,

    • Have never played or lived indoors?

To learn more about becoming an animal foster parent, contact the Volunteer Office at [email protected] or 314-951-1521.

Sue Alkire, coordinator of HSMO’s St. LouisCity Center Foster Program

Since 1996, the answer has been the HumaneSociety Foster Parent Program. Volunteers care foranimals in their own homes until they are matureor healthy enough to be placed for adoption.

“Fostering allows animals a time to grow, heal and experience kindness, sometimes for thevery first time,” said Sue Alkire, coordinator ofHSMO’s St. Louis City Center Foster program. The one-on-one interaction with humans helpsdogs and cats learn to live with people and co-exist with other animals.

The average stay for fostered animals is threeweeks. “We couldn’t do it without the volunteerswho modify their homes and lives and lavishattention on their charges!” she commented. The Foster Program provides a big helping handtoward the second chance these pets need to findtheir forever homes.

Kelso came to Longmeadow when he was justfour weeks old. The calf was living alone in a filthyconcrete stall without food or water. At first, hedidn’t even know how to drink from a bottle. Nowhe weighs about 2,000 pounds. Because he needed so much hands-on care, Kelsobecame a pet. He’s friendly and likes to lick visitors with his long, scratchy tongue.

Miss Molly was rescued in May 2011 with 40 other llamas. All were near deathfrom lack of food and suffered from parasites. Shy at first, Miss Molly is becominga friendly Barn Buddy willing to have people pet her and give her attention. Withtime and love she has discovered that people are going to take care of her and shewill not be neglected again.

When she was rescued, Tumbleweed was so weak from lack of food she couldnot even stand up, let alone run and play. She was rescued by using a makeshiftsled and placed in a sling at the equine emergency clinic until she could stand. Sixmonths after her rescue, Tumbleweed had gained 280 pounds, more than doublingher weight. Today she is out and about chasing tumbleweeds down.
