Happy New Year! Venessa O’Brien
A message from FOLOCA: FOLOCA again thanks our donors for their faithful suppor t. In 2019, some 206 “friends” made donations to FOLOCA and many made multiple donations. FOLOCA raises money strictly
for programming at the Center; to help pay for educational and entertainment activities such as lectures and entertainment plus enriching classes, without having to ask attendees to open their wallets for every event they attend. We also support the Western Mass Food bank, the Longmeadow Food Pantry as well as Outreach and
Social Services programs that support socialization among our senior population. Again this year, we appreciate all donations and we say “Thank You!” for your continued support.

Please consider volunteering to help to end the loneliness epidemic! Neighbor to Neighbor is a friendly visitor program that reaches isolated seniors in their homes. Volunteers provide an on-going, individualized relationship which is designed to decrease the effects of isolation. By providing care and comfort, our goal is to help local residents live longer, healthier, and happier lives. Volunteers will be trained locally by the Baystate Spiritual Care Department and mentored by leaders from Longmeadow’s Council on Aging, First Church of Christ, Temple Beth El and Glenmeadow Retirement. Please contact me or Bev Sager, Program Coordinator at 203-305-7112 or [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering or if you know of someone who could use a regular friendly visitor.

Message from Barbara Smith, Food Pantry Manager
February is heart month. Not only do we need to attend to our loved ones, but we need to tend to our own heart health as well. So here are some tips for a heart healthy diet. 1) Eat a plant-based diet including fruits, veggies and grains. 2) Limit unhealthy fats like butter, dairy and cheese and choose cholesterol lowering margarines such as Benacol or Smart Balance. 3) Choose low fat proteins like lean meat, poultry, fish and beans and limit marbled and processed meats. 4) Reduce sodium and watch your intake of processed and prepared foods. But occasionally give yourself a treat with a heart healthy glass of red wine or a piece of dark chocolate with increased flavonoids. A perfect indulgence for Valentine’s Day. Here is a heart-healthy cod fish recipe that I often make: Baked Cod with Tomato and Feta Preheat oven to 400*. Using an oven safe skillet, sauté 1/2 cup diced onion in 1 Tblsp. Olive oil til soft. Add 1 1/2 cups diced tomatoes (I use 4 Roma tomatoes), 1/4 cup white wine, 1 Tblsp red wine vinegar or white balsamic vinegar, large pinch of oregano or favorite Italian seasoning and pepper to taste. Simmer til tomatoes are juicy. Nestle fish in mixture and spoon some of sauce on top. Bake for 15-20 min. Depending on thickness of fish. Serve with parsley and feta cheese on top. Enjoy!
