New Course, New Season!

K I A R R A R O P E R | S A L E S & M A R K E T I N G D I R E C T O R

I T H A S B E E N a time of transformation

at the Club. The pandemic has made all of

us pivot and, while the stress has touched

everyone’s lives, many are appreciating the

silver lining of quality time with family and

close friends. We have loved seeing the

camaraderie of Members and staff during

this time. Plus, the excitement of the course

restoration is invigorating! Seeing how

truckloads and piles of sand, pipe, and land-

scape materials have been molded, shaped,

and masterfully transformed into sweeping

vistas and rolling greens has been nothing

short of amazing.

Masks are Still the FashionUntil we are released from restric-

masks when coming to the Club.

Getting Closer...We are hoping for a November 17th

course opening. It’s still too early to set a

date in stone since all plans are weather

dependent, but we are carefully nursing

every blade and watching the grass grow

stronger. We cannot wait to announce the

exact reopening date. Stay tuned.

Club Event ReservationPolicy

Special club events, wine dinners, seafood

nights and holiday dining are popular events

that sell out and require the purchase of

special food and beverage products, equip-

ment, entertainment, etc. Last minute

un-replaced cancellations (including changes

to the party number) are unfair to those

Members who are turned away due to full

capacity and cause the Club to incur unnec-

essary expenses if the reservation is not

replaced. As a result, the Club must exercise

a firm enforcement of the special event and

holiday dining policy.

• At the time of making your reservation

we will charge your account 100% of the

event price. Please let us know if you have

other Members dining with you.

• You may cancel 7 days prior to the event,

without being charged.

• If you cancel less than 7 days prior to the

event, you will have to pay 100% of the

event price.

N O T E : Should there be a wait list and we

are able to fill your reservation less than 6 days prior

to the event, your account will be credited in full.

Having moved from Puerto Rico 51 years ago,

Ginny’s husband emphatically declared, “we

are not signing the contract on the house until

we know we have been accepted at the Club.”

Accepted they were, in October 1968, the

same month they joined.

“It has been heaven – and it’s all because of

the Club.” Ginny remarked. “We had seven

kids and they all grew up at the Club, some

were even married there. All of my best friends

were there, we all got along so well together.”

She loved her golf group, having dinner at the

Clubhouse and of course the golf course.

Ginny still lives in the house on the course

in which she raised her family and is delighted

about the course restoration, the Enclave and

Rees 9. “Aren’t we lucky?” she commented.

“All our houses have gone up in value!”

Some of her fondest memories of the Club

surround none other than Robert Trent Jones

himself. Seeing him having lunch solo in the

English pub room, nicknamed the Plaid

Room, or having dinner with important

people and stars like Mickey Rooney.

She called him a “little softy” inside and

remarked how he would often join the

ladies golf group for lunch with “a smile that

went ear to ear. He treated you like a friend,

not a Member.” One of her prized posses-

sions is a photo of herself and Mr. Jones

presenting her with the Club Championship

award. Ginny spoke of her rival and friend,

Member Ramona Hill, “I was the 1986

Club Champion, that was the year Ramona

(who held the title for 17 years) went to

Hawaii. Thank you, Ramona for taking

that vacation!”

At the time of this article, Ginny had just

celebrated her 95th birthday. She still main-

tains a sunny disposition and cheerful attitude.

When asked about her secret to long life, she

did not skip a beat… “golf !”

Ginny Fuhr receiving the

Waterford crystal egg as

the 1986 Club Champion.

She still has the egg!

If anyone can attest to how the Coral Ridge Country Club can

become the core of family life, it would be Virginia or “Ginny” Fuhr.

A Tip from the Top: Mini Tennis, why do it?

Warming up with mini tennis is like

eating at the Outback, no rules! Every pro

has their own way of doing mini tennis. My

philosophy is to gently warm up with an

emphasis on footwork and watching the ball,

not focusing on technique. The ball should

bounce every time which encourages the feet

to move, watch the ball after it bounces until

you FEEL (not see) it hit your racket. Mini

tennis can also help a player learn to hit with

underspin, the most difficult spin to control.

When hitting drop shots, the racket starts

above the ball with a firm wrist and deceler-

ates to a stop. Once a player can do this, they

can continue the swing with a full follow

through and a high finish.

C A R D I O T E N N I S I S no longer a trend,

it is here to stay. Launched in 2005 by the

TIA (Tennis Industry Association), in

conjunction with the USTA, this unique

group fitness program gives players the

opportunity to play tennis, practice skills

and get a full-body workout.

Coral Ridge began offering Cardio Tennis

years ago and co-ed classes are now offered

twice weekly, on Tuesday evenings and

Friday mornings. Members love the workout

and the classes fill to capacity with an average

of 8 players per court. The great part

about Cardio Tennis is that skill levels are

not as important, there are intermediate and

advanced players mixing it up together.

A typical Cardio Tennis class involves a

warm-up featuring dynamic foot movement,

catching/tossing skills and light hitting,

followed by a variety of games and activities

ending with a cool down. Groups rotate

between courts, which allows everyone a

nice mixture of cardio, skill activities and

matches.

And did we mention the music? Fun and

upbeat, adding to the energy of the court.

Member Lynda Davey commented that

cardio tennis is “one of my favorite hours of

the week!”

Instructor Randy Kenyon is a huge

believer in the program. “Cardio Tennis is a

high energy, exciting, fast-paced hour of

competitive tennis play. If you enjoy tennis

and want a heart pounding workout, come

out and join in!”

How’s Your Grip?Too Small?

Grips are too small

when the ring and

middle finger connect

and press into the

thumb pad. This can make it difficult to

maintain stability of the clubface when

striking the ball.

Too Large?Grips are too large

when the ring finger

does not connect with

the thumb pad.

Just Right!Grips are perfect in

size when the middle

finger touches and

presses slightly into the

thumb pad.

If you are unsure about your grips, the Golf

professional staff will be glad to assist you.

Tackle your TrajectoryHaving had a sneak peak at the Champ-

ionship 18 golf course, players will need to be

equipped with multiple shots around the

green. The undulation surrounding the

green will force players to hit shots with

different trajectories to get the ball close to

the hole. A simple way to control the

trajectory of a pitch shot and a lob shot is

having an awareness of the follow through.

When players need to hit a pitch shot

with some spin, they will need to keep their

hands near or under the belt line, leading to

a shorter and lower follow through. This

type of follow through will allow the ball to

come out lower with more spin to stop the

ball quicker on the green.

When players need to elevate the ball up

and over a bunker, they will need to finish

their follow through near their shoulder line,

leading to a longer and higher follow through.

Practice these follow throughs and see how

the ball differs in the air and how it reacts on

the green. – Patrick Schmitz, PGA

Get Fit If you want to play your best, schedule a

club fitting with our professional staff.

Properly fitted irons need to address the

following areas. Proper length, lie angle, grip

size, shaft flex, shaft material, weight, model

of club, etc. We use the latest in fitting tech-

nology including Track Man. This superior

system allows us to measure your club head

speed, ball speed, ball spin, carry distance, club

path, angle of attack, etc. By using this tech-

nology, we can get you dialed in with the best

equipment that fits YOU!

Caring for the Course

To provide you with the optimal Coral Ridge

experience, please review the following

important guidelines:

Cart Rules

• Golf carts must remain at least 30 feet

outside of the putting surface.

• Remain away from bunker edges and do

not drive between bunkers.

• Refrain from parking in front of greens.

• Please return to the cart paths at or before

the cart directional signs.

• Please keep all four tires of the cart on the

path around tees and greens.

Parking Carts Around Greens

• Blue posts have been strategically placed

on the course to notify you where to park

your golf cart.

Push/Pull Cart Rules

• Walking carts should never be rolled

onto/over any of the putting surfaces at

any time.

• Rees Jones has specifically designed walk

off areas on each green where your walking

carts should be parked. These will help

direct you to the next tee box and keep you

and your walking cart safe from some of

the steep slopes that are now present.

the work. Thank you, Carolina!

a national pandemic, weeks of torrential

rainfall, several threats of hurricanes, and a

city sewer project, the course restoration

went ahead as planned! A portable trailer

became the office compound where Rees

Jones’ team huddled over architectural,

irrigation, drainage, and landscaping plans.

Jim Larner, project manager; Steve Crotty,

lead shaper; Steve Weisser lead architect

for Rees; Steve Botek, the engineer,

Robby Farina, the contractor and our very

own Director of Golf Courses &

Grounds, Jay Boring managed an army of

workers as they progressed through the

phases of updating the infrastructure and

restoring the course to what Robert Trent

Jones had originally designed…and better!

COURSE RESTORATION, LOOKING BACK

Digging lakes for drainage, adding 14 miles of drainage pipe… burying 23 miles of irrigation pipe... shaping and building greens…

shaping 92 bunkers, 118,149 sq ft… laying 5.4 miles of cart paths…hand/machine sprigging plus laying29 acres (1,263,240 sq ft) of sod…

and finally mowing.

Rees was right.

The gem has gotten shinier and is now sparkling with new potential!
