Six juniors, all speaking for the first time, talked about the value of the written word, Aboriginal song lines, the nature of addictions, bullying, career options and the need to know how to cook. Ethan Reid, with his very well informed and engaging presentation on addictions was granted the first prize, with runner up, Terri Dodaro’s very honest and articulate discussion of bullying. The senior section was made up of a group of confident and experienced speakers who spoke about a range of very complex issues: taking opportunities and learning, the role of communities, domestic violence, mental health, being brave, women in sport and the younger generation. Connor Day’s exploration of discrimination in sport around women was awarded first followed by Jessica Pereira’s report on the state of mental health in our community and beyond. Jenny and John Hetherington were very impressed with the quality of the presentations, and the depth of understanding the students displayed on such a diverse range of topics. The HSC exam period has commenced. Francesca Fenton completed her HSC practical dance on Wednesday. Performing three pieces for the examiners, Francesca felt well prepared having joined the other dancers at Cowra High School in their annual dance concert, Synchronicity held earlier this month. Design and technology projects are due Thursday 25 August and visual arts body of works are due Monday 29 August. Nominations for captains and SRC representatives closed this week. The Year 11 students who have nominated for captains will be giving their talks on Friday morning. Mr Robinson and I have individually talked with all the nominees, discussing their motivations for nomination, how they see themselves making a difference and how they perceive the roles of leadership. We were overwhelmed by their thoughtfulness, their concern for other students and their ability to explain why they thought they had something to offer. We will have an excellent student leadership team for 2017. Elections will be Monday 22 August and inductions on Wednesday 31 August. This year’s Archibull project is developing. The cow is being transformed into a showcase on the cotton industry. Last week, Laura Bennett, young farming champion, spent the day working with different groups of students giving them information and feedback on their research on the cotton industry and their plans to represent it on the cow. She said that the farming champions are very keen to work with our school because of the quality of previous Archibull submissions, and how lucky she felt to be the nominated person. It was good to see so many parents at our first parent/teacher interviews last Monday night. If you missed last Monday or are in the M-Z group, next Monday 22 August will be the second evening of interviews from 4.00 – 6.00pm. This year we have printed off the Tell Them From Me survey for parents, making it available at the evenings. We would appreciate these surveys being completed and returned to school: the feedback influences how we better meet the needs of your children. Margaret Carey Principal PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS A reminder that parent/teacher interviews for surnames from M-Z, will be held on Monday 22 August from 4-6pm in the school hall. If you were unable to attend last week and you wish to speak to your student’s teachers, please come along.

Well-being Corner“We will never have true civilization until we have

learned to recognise the rights of others”.

Will Rogers

When you’re in a hurry or you have to wait, it’s easy to forget you are part of the human race. You may be

tempted to cut in line or cut someone off. You might lose your patience or lose your cool. You might give someone

a hard time. Slow down. Be patient. Take the time to respect the rights of others.

TODAYI’ll be patient with other people.
