Self-Analytical Reflection I got started in yearbook during the fall semester of my eight grade year. I wanted to join Mr. Tra-cy’s yearbook class because some of my other friends had been involved during the spring semester and told me that it was fun. I believe that entering that class prepared me for joining Saugus Yearbook the following year. Towards the end of my eight grade year, I remember some of the Section Editors and Ms. Tolisano coming into Mr. Tracy’s room and asking people if they wanted to join yearbook at Saugus. I knew that it would be so fun and with my amazing experience in Mr. Tracy’s yearbook class, I decided to join. I have learned a lot of valuable information throughout this year’s yearbook course. First of all, even though I was in yearbook in eighth grade, I was not taught the skills of InDesign and Photoshop like I was taught this year. We used each a little bit, but this year we took them into depth and used them ev-ery day to complete spreads and treat photos. I also learned how to work under pressure. With deadlines every week and continuously receiving new pages to complete in short periods of time, I was forced to perfect my time management skills. On top of that, yearbook has taught me that teamwork keep the whole staff running. For example, shortly after starting spreads I quickly realized that if my Section Edi-tor made a mistake, it affected my completion of that spread because I had to take time to get every-thing straightened out before beginning work. It taught me that in order to be a functional staffer, every-one has to show teamwork and hold up on their commitments. I also learned that sales and advertising is harder than it seems. It was hard to have businesses go through with buying an ad for the back of our yearbook. For example, when I was selling an ad to the car dealerships it was hard to get ahold of them because they were so busy all the time. But after a few weeks, I was able to talk to them and I sold the ad. The hardest skill that I learned this year from taking yearbook was journalism. Before I joined year-book, I was a horrible writer. But after a year of taking this class, I learned the proper ways to write and was able to take someone’s interview and turn it into an interesting story. Along with journalism comes interviewing. When I joined yearbook I was skeptical about the idea of interviewing other people, especially the seniors that were three grades ahead of me. But once I started interviewing, I realized that it was not even half as bad as I thought and it caused me to meet some amazing people at this school that I never would have. Finally, I learned the skill of dedication. Being in caused me to give up all of my free time in or-der to complete spreads. At first I really did not like staying in afterschool, before school, and during lunch. But I got to know an all of my amazing staffers and section editors because of it, so I am glad that I did. I was a part of people section during my year in Saugus Yearbook. Though the sec-tion was not really hard, I spent a lot of my free time in the lab. For example, during the yearbook ‘ugly sweater party’ I was awarded the Night Owl Award. The reason why I was given it was be-cause I spent the most hours in the yearbook room, in the mornings, during lunch, and after-school to complete my spreads. When I finished my people section layouts I was assigned to help clean the labs and work with other staffers to help them reach their deadlines on time.

The main problem that I faced this year was trying to manage my time. It was very hard for me because I always felt like I never had enough time to finish. I was given a spread, which had to be completed in the time frame of one week. At the end of the week, it would be graded and giv-en to me shortly after to revise and fix all of my mistakes. But on top of that, I was given another spread to finish by the following Friday. It was pretty hard for me to adjust and learn how to com-plete the spread I was given and revise my spread from the previous week all at the same time. I learned that keeping focused during the class period and working quickly but efficiently was the main thing that got me to finish everything on time. If these problems arose again, I would definitely han-dle them the same way I did this year because it seemed to work positively towards my situation.

This year’s yearbook course was beneficial to me. It improved my writing skills, made my time management skills more efficient, and strengthened my knowledge about Photoshop and InDe-sign. I believe that these skills are valuable if I ever want to join the field of photography, or any field in general. The skills I learned in this class were amazing and I will keep them with me for a long time.

Portfolio Design

The theme for my portfolio is Leading the Way. The fonts that I chose were Teen Light and Pupcat. I chose them because, my cover has triangles flying around the page and I wanted a font that was light like flight. There was no real strategic thought to the colors I chose, I just really liked the way that they looked together, but I kept a consistent color pattern throughout my whole portfolio. The colors are, pink, purple, blue, and green. The graphics I chose were triangles and the reason why was because that is not a graphic that we have used in our yearbook yet and I wanted to try some-thing that could be a potential guideline for next year’s yearbook.

In creating my theme design, I really had no clue what I wanted it to look like. So I started looking on Pintrest for inspiration and I came across one that I really liked. I was a white book with a giant group of green, purple, blue, and orange triangles flying across the page. The name of this yearbook was Wanderlust. I don’t know what school made it but I enjoyed the way that the triangles flew across the page and I wanted to recreate it. I added a single triangle leading the way for the pack behind and that is how I got my theme.

What I really like about the finished product is that it is simple, but has enough elements that I can use them to represent my theme throughout my whole portfolio. I also really like the dotted line that I used leading up to the front triangle. I was hard to make because I had to place every tiny line by hand, but I enjoy the final product.

Reflection #1

My best piece of work is a sidebar package on page 188-189. While creating the sidebar, one of the problems that I faced was with the ‘Tell Me More’ sidebar, was very hard to get the SNN photos to fit in the box because they were too large and their names were not showing. Through a long process, my section editor, Chris was able to fix it and make it fit. Another thing I learned was from the ‘Make a Statement’ sidebar. It was really hard to cut out the background of the pom-poms because most of the photos I found off of Max Preps were blurry. But after searching I was able to find ones that were clear enough that I could cut them out perfectly. Also, with sidebar ‘Knowing the Numbers’ every person that I interviewed kept saying that their favorite genre of music was pop, which gave me no variety in people throughout my page. But after refocusing towards an-other group of individuals, I was able to get a variety of differ-ent genres. In the end, after all of my corrections and revisions were completed I really loved the final product. I enjoy how ev-erything looks and how there were four types of sidebars on one page. It really represents a variety of different students at our school. I am very proud of my work put into this page.

Reflection #2

One of my pieces that I believe needs some improvement is page 170-171. I had some trouble while I was completing the side-bars on this page. That was because it took me a really long time to choose an event to feature in my photo package. After a few days of spending the whole period and lunch looking through pho-tos to use, I finally chose the homecoming rally. Since it took me a long time to choose an event, I only got a few days to treat and place the photos. What I learned from this experience, is to always be looking for events to use on your spare time because they can come in handy in situations like these ones. Also, on the other side-bar ‘The Little Things’ I wished I would have spent more time on the cobs because I was not completely satisfied with them. The rea-son why I had barley any time was because I had spent most of it on the other sidebar instead of this one. But overall, there was room for improvement and I wish I would have done a little nicer job.

1. I really like this photo because it shows a coach working with an individual volleyball player, while others are watching in. It has good leading lines due to the volleyball net and the blue lines on the wall framing the main focus of the picture, which are the coach and player. It also sets up repetition since every player is wearing the same jersey and both the coach and main player have their hands in the air. You can locate this photo by going into Y drive, design projects, Lauren, Reflection 3, and clicking Reflection 1.

2. This photo is great because it is an action shot of a Saugus volleyball player blocking the ball from the opposing team. I really enjoy this picture and it was used as a dominant photo on the boys’ volleyball page. It shows leading lines due to the volleyball net and post. It also shows repetition due to the Saugus players jumping up with their arms in the air. Repetition is also represented because both teams are wearing their jerseys and there are about three players from each team shown in the photo. You can locate this photo by going into Y drive, design projects, Lauren, Reflection 3, and clicking Reflection 2.

3. A picture of a volleyball player is what I chose for my final photo. This one had to be spot colored to fit the format of my page. What I like about this photo is it shows one player spiking the ball while the other two are watching. It represents leading lines because there are two players that lead up to the first. Also, this photo shows filling the frame and repetition of players wearing the same jersey. You can locate this photo by going into Y drive, design projects, Lauren, Reflection 3, and clicking Reflection 3.

Reflection 4

1. I used this sidebar for the submission ‘People with Mug Shots’ which is entry number Y34. This sidebar is located on page 162-163. I would like it to represent me because I like how it is a simple sidebar that shows different students that share a common interest. In this sidebar, the common interest was dirt biking. Through it was simple and easy to complete, I think that the dirt biker COB and headshots were done well. This sidebar was the first one that I ever completed and I think I did a good job.

2. I used this sidebar for the submission ‘Academic Photo’ which is entry number Y17. This sidebar is located on page 184-185. I like this sidebar because it too represents different people that are in the same class, and gives their opinions of what they think of the teacher. This sidebar was a little harder to complete than the first because it involved a more complex interview. But I like my effort none the less.

3. I used this sidebar for the submission ‘Sidebar Writing’ which is entry number Y7. This sidebar is located on page 170-171. I like this page because both of the two sidebars have some common interest. Which is that they both contain a large number of pictures on each one. The first sidebar is a photo package on the homecoming rally and the other is a question about what item is your lucky charm. But I like how the difference between the two sidebars is established because in one, all of the photos are in black and white. It gives this page a feel like it is full and complete, but not cluttered.
