MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR TIME AT LAUNCH

MUSIC FESTIVALAnxious to check out some up and coming artists in a variety of musical genres?

With nearly 200 artists of all different genres performing over one weekend, there’s no better place to do that then at LAUNCH Music Festival!

Here are some pointers on surviving a LAUNCH before diving in!

GET YOURSELF A WRISTBANDAll LAUNCH showcases can be attended ala carte by paying a cover charge at participating venues - but the best value for your dollar is to get yourself a LAUNCH Music Festival wristband. Wristbands come in 3 varieties (Friday only, Saturday only, or Weekend Pass) and let you enter any venue free of charge. Not only is this a great value, but it lets you wander from venue to venue discovering new artists and bands! Wristbands can be purchased in advance or the weekend of LAUNCH at our registration table. Please see the previous page for purchasing options.

THERE TRULY IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONEDon’t limit yourself to just who happens to be performing at the venue you’re at - Check in at one of our other venues. It’s safe to say that at almost any given time between half a dozen and a dozen different acts are performing at one of our venues within a 3 block radius! A LAUNCH Music Festival wristband lets you freely move in and out of venues at your leisure!

MAKE A PLANLAUNCH music festival can be a little overwhelming with nearly 200 artists performing over the course of one weekend. While it can be fun to wander around and stumble upon bands randomly, our Conference and Festival Guide (which you’re holding!) lists all of the acts playing, what time they’re performing and what style of music they play. This makes the Guide an invaluable resource to carry around town with you to see who is performing where and when.

Have an iPhone, Android or Blackberry? Try our interactive schedule! Sort artists by venue, genre and more. Make your own personal schedule and share with your friends on Facebook and Twitter! Just visit http://launch2012.sched.org or scan the QR code below with your smartphone to get started!

STOP BY OUR TRADE SHOWUnlike other events related to the Conference portion of LAUNCH, our trade show is open to the public and we encourage everyone to drop by and visit our vendors!

WEAR SNEAKERSThis might sound like a no brainer, but it’s likely that you’re going to be doing a lot of walking - take that into account and wear some comfortable footwear!

PARKINGNative Lancastrians can tell you that parking in Lancaster City can always be tricky, but even more so when there are so many people around for an event like LAUNCH! Fortunately, the map included here in our Guide shows you where all the parking lots and parking garages are in the area, and its a safe bet there’s something available a block or two from where you want to end up.

HAVE FUNPerhaps the most important rule of all!

RUSTED ROOTThursday, April 26th at Lancaster County Convention Center

Would it be cliche to say that Rusted Root has taken world music out of this world? Probably. But in this case, it would also be true - in 2003 the band’s memorable track “Send Me On My Way” was chosen as wake-up music for the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity by NASA engineers.

For Rusted Root, who has built a name for themselves over the last 20 years on their unique blend of rock and world music, the event was just another in a long line of successes including having their songs included in movies like “Twister” and the blockbuster “Ice Age” to television shows such as “Ally McBeal.”

“Honestly, I feel really blessed to be making a living 20 years later from this band I started in college,” says percussionist and vocalist Liz Berlin.

Berlin had always been involved in music, having grown up with two classical singers for parents. She started playing the guitar at 16, but her love of percussion would come later, when she was attending a class at the University of Pittsburgh on African drumming. It was around that time that she and Michael Glabicki decided to join their musical forces and form a band. The result was Rusted Root, which released its first album, “Cruel Sun,” in 1992.

Success would come after years of hard work and juggling of time, work and school for all the band members.”Some people would work and I went to school,” Berlin says. “We’d do that all day and then we’d start practice at 8 p.m. and go until 5 in the morning.”

Most of those hours were devoted to writing music. “We worked really hard on just developing the initial group of songs,” Berlin explains. After cultivating a handful that met their expectations, the band began playing anywhere that would take them.

That ‘play anywhere’ attitude landed them in some unusual locations early on, such as a biker bar in the South. “It was this little bar filled with these hardcore motorcycle riders, and we were like ‘Oh my God, what are we doing [performing] in front of these people?’” recalls Berlin. “We got on stage and circled up our energy and did what we did hardcore. By the middle of the show they were really into it.”

That, in Berlin’s mind, is how you build up a fan base. “Just be the best you can be

in what you’re doing, regardless of how intimidated you might be by the circumstances,” she said. But being gutsy isn’t enough to her - she advises all those striving to “make it” in the music scene to first build up a solid catalogue of songs. “Create music that will appeal to people and will have the kind of power to create the kind of career you have envisioned for yourself,” she said. “You

have to make sure you’re creating something special.”

Once armed with a strong catalog of material, Berlin advises booking gigs as much as possible as well as delving into the online scene. “Put a lot of energy into your social media,” she stresses. “Try to create an awareness of yourself and your music.”

Rusted Root is already leveraging their social media presence through the “Fortunate Freaks Unite: We are Rusted Root!” fundraising campaign. Modeled after Kickstarter, the band is asking fans to help with the production, recording and marketing costs of a new album on its website (www.rustedroot.com). In return, those who donate will receive various rewards such as copies of the album, concert tickets and private performances.

“It’s definitely made it possible for us to make this record,” Berlin says of the campaign.

The album is nameless at the moment, with a tentative October release date. But those at LAUNCH can catch a sneak peek when Rusted Root performs. “We have about half a set right now that’s all new stuff,” Berlin says. “It’s a really cool mixture too, it’ll go from old to new to old to new seamlessly and the energy will stay right there.”

The band considers the making of a Rusted Root album to be a collaborative process that includes the fans as well as the band too. While performing the new material, the band will be keeping an eye out for fan responses. “A lot of the way that we prepare for recording an album is developing the songs on the road and playing them for the crowd,” Berlin explains. “It becomes collaborative with the audience because of the way the audience reacts and participates. [The fans] totally contribute. If they don’t like it, it doesn’t feel good and if it doesn’t feel good it doesn’t go on the album.”’

A consistent crowd-pleaser, and one of Berlin’s favorite from the band’s repertoire, is “Food and Creative Love,” from the band’s major label debut, 1994’s “When I Woke”.

“It starts off like a slow reggae thing and then it speeds up and goes into this really rocking - it’s just awesome,” she says. “And the chorus is like ‘All I want is food and creative love,’ it’s just such a great line I think. The whole band is singing in harmony at that point in the chorus. The energy in it is always huge; the crowd is always singing and dancing to it.”

That crowd interaction and relationship is a key part of Rusted Root. Without their fans, Berlin feels they would not be reaching their 20th anniversary.

“It’s really because the fans are really, really loyal and they stick with us to the point that we can go to a city like Lancaster, or any number of cities in the country, and draw a great crowd and have a good experience,” she says.

And that is what fuels Rusted Root.

TEXAS IN JULYSaturday, April 28th at Lancaster County Convention Center

Sometimes being a good bandmate means putting ego aside.

That was the case for Ben Witkowski when it came to Texas in July, a band he formed with friends while in high school. Witkowski began as the lead vocalist for the metal group, but after a few shows he knew it would be best for the band if he bowed out.

“I was awful as a vocalist,” he recalls with a laugh. “It was really bad.”

But his relationship with Texas in July didn’t end there - when the band found itself in need of a bassist, Witkowski came to the rescue. While he had never played bass before, he picked up the instrument, a copy of Texas in July’s demo CD, and set about learning the band’s songs. What he lacked in experience, Witkowski made up for in dedication.

It is that hard work ethic, shared by all the group’s members, which has made Texas in July more than just a high school band.

“If you’re trying to start a band, make sure you have dedicated members. Everybody has to be able to make the leap to throw in the time and effort,” Witkowski advises. “Just keep playing shows, never stop and try to apply yourself as much as you can. It takes a lot of time. You have to drop things, you have to sacrifice things.”

Playing bass didn’t come easy for Witkowski. “Early on it was like, what am I am going to do with a bass? It’s so weird,” he says. But as he continued to play, Witkowski fell in love with the instrument and with performing. “I just really love playing live,” he says, “It’s my favorite part of the day… I love getting out there.”

It is that love of playing that made the band members realize that their hobby should become their profession. “We just loved it so much,” Witkowski professes. “It feels like it’s slowly becoming second nature to be on tour and make music full time.”

When the band first started, all the members were in high school and would get together to play on weekends, eventually performing in New Jersey and New York. While still in school, they were signed to CI Records.“It was just so weird, because we never thought it would go that far,” Witkowski says. “We were really excited about that.”

Since then Texas in July has signed to Equal Vision Records, produced two full length albums and toured in Europe twice. Its album “One Reality” premiered at number three on the Billboard New Artist/Heatseekers Chart when it was released in April of last year. The band even got a mention on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” when its drummer, Adam Gray, showcased his drumming and juggling talents, thoroughly thrilling William Shatner in the process.

When Witkowski and his bandmates formed Texas in July, there intent wasn’t necessarily to start a metal band as their individual music tastes varied from old school rock to rap to country. Choosing metal as their band’s genre was an organic decision. “When we started writing music, [metal] is what we realized it was. It was a shot in the dark really,” Witkowski recalls. “We’re just writing music that we want to hear and putting things out there lyrically for people to take and run with.”

It is not easy playing a niche genre, especially one that is viewed as an acquired taste. “It’s not a big market, it’s an underground genre,” Witkowski explains. “You’ll never see a band that only screams receiving a Grammy.”

But for Witkowski, that is also part of the appeal. With a new album currently in the works, the hard rocking will be harder than ever. “We’ve been off for about a month and we’ve been writing this entire break,” he says. “We’re bringing back old riffing, faster drums – we’re bringing back our metal that we used to have. As far as it’s looking now, it’s heavier, faster.”

The band is keeping the new album’s music under wraps for the moment, but plans on entering the studio to record shortly after the LAUNCH Music Conference.

The boys are LAUNCH veterans, having attended all of the conferences so far. Witkowski says he learned a thing or two at LAUNCH from attending panels and checking out the trade show area. “It’s

like a business meeting with live music. It’s wild.”

While they will not be performing any new music at their performance on Saturday, April 28, fans can expect to hear plenty of the band’s trademark groove metalcore. One song to listen out for in particular is Witkowski’s favorite, “One Reality.”

“I really love the beginning,” he says. “It’s probably one of my favorite parts of the last CD. It’s like a quick beginning to the song, goes wild and then mellows out by the end.”

While the song may mellow out, Texas in July’s rise shows no signs of slowing. That’s just fine for Witkowski. “There’s been some rugged touring, some long drives. But it’s awesome and it’s fun,” he says. “I wouldn’t trade this for anything.”

How To Read This Schedule

Each venue is listed by day with each artist listed by the time at which their set starts.

Below the venue name is information on what the cover charge is to get in without a wristband or badge.

Wristbands and badges get into all showcases free with a very few slight exceptions. That info is all listed below the venue name.

Unless otherwise marked with an “18+” or “21+” bullet, shows are open to All Ages.

Each artist is color coded to give a rough idea of what style of music they play. While every band hates being classified, this gives music fans a sense of what they can expect at any given venue on a given night.

DUCKY DUKEFriday, April 27th at Lancaster Convention Center

With a name like Ducky Duke, the lead singer of Ducky and the Vintage is hard to forget.

Sporting a trimmed moustache straight out of the Wild West, Ducky became a household name after he participated in a blind audition for NBC’s “The Voice.” While he was not picked by the judges, he got Carson Daly’s notice and spawned a Twitter trend #WhatTheHeckHappenedToDucky.

For someone not addicted to social media, the fan response was overwhelming. Ducky is known for taking the time to respond to every tweet, every comment as much as possible. After “The Voice” aired his audition, the singer spent 36 hours roughly responding to messages.

Some of those comments were clamoring for more Ducky on their TV and their requests were answered when Carson Daly showcased Ducky on his late night show, “Last Call with Carson Daly,” in March.

Ducky Duke’s music is as unique as the man - a sultry, toe tapping mix of blues and rock and roll with a dash of pop thrown in. “I’m just trying to send out good vibes,” Ducky says of his music, “Just something to rock to more than anything.”

When listening to Ducky, it’s easy to detect his inspirations: Jack White,

Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley. His music shares the heart thumping quality of White, the down to earth grit of Cash and the swagger of Presley, all of these combining to make something undeniably Ducky.

“I just want to play,” is his mantra. Fame is a bonus for this musician, performance is the key. “Playing music is just a good feeling,” he says honestly. “Even when [stuff] gets hard, it’s always a release to play and perform. It takes you out of you head for a little bit.”

Getting the crowd pumped is part of what Ducky loves best about concerts. His favorite song on his set list is “Tambourine,” a fun, guitar filled, drum slapping jam. “It’s a heavy song. It’s just really loud and nice,” he says.

When Ducky plays, it is not just the crowd that moves. He jumps, head bangs, and dips the microphone. It is abundantly clear that performing is in Ducky’s blood and no matter the size of the crowd, it is what he loves to do.

KINGSFOILFriday, April 27h at Marion Court

Whether telling the tale of parents separating in “Love Is a Carnival Goldfish,” or the ups and downs of a relationship as detailed in “Hope is Still on the Prowl,” every song for the pop rock group Kingsfoil is a story.

The group, hailing from York, PA, is thoroughly melody driven with each song encompassing a catchy hook and tune that once heard, pops up randomly in one’s head. Its songs draw from the member’s personal experiences, giving every song an intimate, closed door feeling. That “real” aspect of their songwriting is what allows them to tackle oft-visited subject music, such as relationships and heartbreak, in a way that comes across as genuine and relatable.

“Music goes so much further than anything else,” says singer Jordan Davis. “If you’re really writing about the things that you’re going through and you know its true, people are going to connect with it.”

Connecting with people through music and performing is what Kingsfoil was meant to do, Davis feels. “There’s really nothing else, in my own opinion,” he says. “This is what I was meant to do. I have that feeling in me, there’s no doubt.”

With a new album on the way and a summer tour on the horizon, Kingsfoil headquarters has been busy. Adding to the

bustle is the recent addition of a new drummer, one that will be instantly recognizable to most Kingsfoil fans - actor Frankie Muniz, best known for his role as the titular character on the popular sitcom Malcolm In The Middle.

“When my manager sent over their music, I literally became the biggest Kingsfoil fan,”

Muniz said. “I am honestly beyond excited to be in this [band].”

The group, whose music video “Give It Up Now” aired late last year on MTVU, has changed a lot from when it started - the lyrics have matured, the skills have improved and the band members have grown. However, the passion is still the same. And even in the midst of success, the band is anything but content to rest on its laurels.

“We’re all kind of raising the bar and inspiring each other,” Davis said. “As a band, it’s never felt better than it does now.”
