It’snowbeenthreeyearsthatIhaveservedasDeanoftheGevirtzSchool,andstilladaydoesn’tgobythatI’mremindedabouttheimportantworkourcommunitydoesandthetremendousimpactthatithasinhelpingtoinformandimproveresearch,policy,andpracticeineducationandappliedpsychology.

Headingintothe2019-2020schoolyearIhaveanewteamtohelpmeleadtheSchool:whileDr.JillSharkeywillcontinuetoserveasAssociateDeanforResearchandOutreach,wewillnowbejoinedbyDr.DanielleHarlowasAssociateDeanforFacultyDevelopmentandAcademicProgramsandDr.RichardDuránasAssociateDeanandFacultyEquityAdvisor.Iameagertogettoworkwiththistalentedteamaswerolloutournewstrategicplanfor2020-2024.

Whilenotathematicissue,perse,our2019-20Launch/Re:Launchpredominantlyfocusesonworkwearedoingfor,with,andinlocalschools.Youwillreadaboutanexcitingnewprogram—thePEACCommunityFellowships—whichthisyearprovidefourbornandbredSantaBarbaranswithfullfundingtoattendouracclaimedTeacherEducationProgram.Uponearningtheirteachingcredentials,eachwillreceiveanopportunitytoteachatSantaBarbaraUnifiedSchoolDistrict.YouwillalsolearnaboutthefirsttenyearsofourfruitfulconnectionwiththeHardingUniversityPartnershipSchool,aSantaBarbaraelementaryschool.TheninRe:Launch—whichhighlightsasamplingofthelatestresearchgoingoninGGSE—youwillhearabouttheimplementationandevaluationworkDr.MattQuirkisdoinginnearbyCarpinteria,developinganeffectiveduallanguageimmersionprogram.

LaunchwillalsoinformyouaboutthesuccessofourSchoolPsychology20Ph.D.sby2020success;ourprogramhasplaced26doctoralgraduatesinuniversitypositionsinthepast14years.AndthenLaunchwillspotlightalumnianddonorGordonMorrell,whoexplainshowhelpfuleducationknowledgecanbeinbusiness,andwhybusinessesshouldtakepartinphilanthropy.

LOCAL STUDENTS BECOME LOCAL TEACHERS: THE FIRST PEAC COMMUNITY FELLOWS

Herearethreepointsthatadduptoonebigproblem:

• 76%ofkidsinCaliforniaschoolsare childrenofcolor,while63%oftheteacherworkforceisAnglo.

• 58percentofCalifornia’sschooldistrictshaveplanstoexpandbilingualeducationand86percentexpectateachershortage.

• ACaliforniaresidentpaysapproximately$17,320intuitionandcampus-basedfees alonetocompleteheryearinourTeacherEducationProgram(TEP),ayearwhenthere isnotimetomakemoneyatanyotherjob.

Fortunately,thenewPEACCommunityFellowshipforEducationisworkingtoaddressthisvexingproblem.SantaBarbaransEvelyJimenez,MonicaRojas,andAlejandrinaandMariaLorenzanoarethefirstPEACCommunityFellows,currentlypartoftheTeacherEducationcohortof2019-20.TheprogramprovideseachwithfullfundingtoattendTEP.Butwhat’smore,uponearningtheirteachingcredentials,eachwillreceiveanopportunitytoteachintheSantaBarbaraUnifiedSchoolDistrict.

TheprogramisanunprecedentedcollaborationbetweenUCSantaBarbaraandSantaBarbaraUnifiedSchoolDistrict,withthesupportoftheJamesS.BowerFoundation,HazenFamilyFoundation,andtheHelenandWillWebsterFoundation.AsSuperintendentCaryMatsuokaputsit,“Thisprogramsupportsfirst-generationcollegegraduatesintheiraspirationstoserveasrolemodelsintheSantaBarbaracommunity,aswellasincreasediversityintheSantaBarbaraUnifiedteacherworkforce.”

Thisarticlewillspotlightthesefoureducators.

Evely Jimenez, MST, M.Ed. candidate

EvelyJimenezhasaparticularlypertinentbackstorytoendupattheGevirtzSchoolasaPEACCommunityFellow;sheattendedHardingbeforeitbecametheHardingUniversityPartnershipSchoolandLaCumbreJuniorHighbeforeitcreatedPEAC(ProgramforEffectiveAccesstoCollege).Evely’sperseverancehelpedherbethefirstinherfamilytograduatecollege,andtoparticipateinAVID(AdvancementViaIndividualAttainment),whensheattendedSantaBarbaraHigh.

“AVIDisasmallercommunitywithintheentireschoolofpeoplewhosharesimilarstoriesandsimilarvaluesabouteducationandovercomingadversitysotheycanpersevereintohighereducation,”Evelyexplains.Thekey,shesays,isateacherwhohelped“studentslearnnewthingsinregardstocollege,givenmanyofthesestudents’parentsorguardiansdidn’thaveexperienceinhighereducationoreducationingeneral.”

EvelyattendedSantaBarbaraCityCollegefortwoyears,andduringthattimeparticipatedasamemberofthetutoringteamforthePEACprogram,andhadtheopportunitytoexperiencepersonalgrowthduringaninternshipwiththeWildernessYouthProject.TransferringtoUCDavis,sheearnedaBAinSpanishwithaminorinEducation.Alreadyhopingtobeateacher,hertimeatDaviscemented

thatdesirewhensheworkedasateachingassistantina2ndgradeclassroom.“Irealizedhowfundamentalitwasforthestudentstohavesupportatthatage,”shesays.“ManyofthestudentswereidentifiedasEnglishLanguageLearnersandIrealizedIcouldbeabridgetohelpthembesuccessful.Inaclassroomoftwenty-eightyoucangetlost—itwasgreattosupportthem.”

EvelywantstobesuretohonorthelegacyofLaCumbreprincipalJoAnneCaines,whohadthevisiontocreatePEAC.“PEACstartsinjuniorhighschool,butitdoesn’tjusthelpgetstudentspreparedforcollege,ithelpsthemworktogether,tutoringyoungerstudents,soeverythingyou’vedonehasalargerimpactinourcommunityandsociety.Ithelpsshowyouthedifferencesyoucanmakeasaneducator.”

EvelyattendedHardingElementarywhereherkindergartenteacher,Mrs.Presser,becameherinspirationtobecomeateacher.Evelyremembers,“Sheinteractedwithmyparentsandbelievedinusasafamily.”Fromthatclasson,shehopedtobeateacher.

ThankstothePEACFellowship,shenowknowsshewillgettoteachinaSantaBarbaraclassroominfall2020.“Icanbealiteralrolemodelformystudents,”shesays.“IwillbegivenanopportunitytobreakcyclesandbeamodelforstudentswhosharethesamebackgroundasIdo.”

Monica Rojas, ESC Moderate/Severe credential and M.Ed. candidate

MonicaRojaswasalreadyadmittedintotheTeacherEducationProgrambeforeshelearnedshewouldreceiveaPEACCommunityFellowship.“Iwassuperstressedabouthowtopay,asIhadtosupportmyselfandalittleone,”shesays,referringtoherseven-year-oldson.“IhadacceptedthefactthatIwouldbeindebt,butwasworried.”

Fortunately,shegotaphonecallfromTEPdirectorAndrewFedderstocomeinandhetoldhershewouldgetafullrideandajobwaitingforherattheendoftheyear.“It’sahumblingfeeling,”theSanMarcosHighgraduatesays.“Iwanttobeabletodothesamethingsomeday,tobeabletohelpsomeonewhoisinasimilarsituation.”

HelpingothersiscrucialforMonica,whoearnedaBAinPsychologyatCalStateChannelIslands,whereshewasfirstexposedtothecommunityofthosewithautismspectrumdisorders.GettingajobasaparaeducatorintheGoletaUnifiedSchoolDistrictOfficeaftercollegeledher,shesays,“Toworkwithpsychologistsandspeechtherapists,andIrealizedIwantedtobemorehandson.”ShealsolearnedhowvaluableitwastobebilingualattheDistrictOffice,claiming,“Ihadtotranslateallthetime.”

AtherjobshebefriendedstudentstheninUCSB’sspecialeducationcredentialtrack,andsoonshewasintroducedtoFedders(whoisalsoaspecialeducationinstructor)andAmberMoran,anotherlong-timespecialeducationinstructor.“Theyweresuperhelpful,”Monicasays.“Theyreallywalkedmethroughtheapplicationprocess.”

Monica’sexperienceasapeereducatorwillcertainlyserveher,andherfuturestudents,well.“I’vebeeninclassroomswhereIworkedwithteachersthatweremyteachers,”saystheAdamsandLaCumbreJuniorHighalumna.“SinceI’malocalIknowalotoffamilies.”

Andthatfamilyconnectionisimportantwhenhelpingspecialeducationstudents.“Agreatteacherissomeonewhoisawareofthediversityinourcommunity,”Monicaasserts,“andcanformstrongrelationshipswithstudents’families.Thatcreatesmuchbetteroutcomes,evidenceshows.”ForwhileMonica hasjustbegunhercredentialandM.Ed.work,shehaslongtermgoalstoo.“IeventuallywanttogetaPh.D.,”shesays,“Iwouldlovetoteachstudentstobegreatteachers—that’smyultimategoal.”


Alejandrina and Maria Lorenzano, both SST-English and M.Ed. candidates

WhileAlejandrinaandMariaLorenzanoaretwins,andbothareworkingonsinglesubjectEnglishcredentials,howtheydecidedontheirchosenfieldisquitedifferent,despitebothearningBAsinEnglishatUCLAin2016.Forwhentheyenteredcollege,theyhadverydifferentmidsets.

“Helpingpeoplesoundedexciting,butIthoughttheonlywaytocreateanameformyselfwastobecomeadoctor,”Alejandrinaexplainsofherinitialdecisiontodeclareapre-medmajor.AtUCLA,however,shequicklylearnedshedidn’tlikemathorchemistry.“Peoplesaidyoushouldlovewhatyoudobutitwasn’thappening,”shecontinues.“OnceIchangedtoEnglishIwashappy—I

decidedIcouldbeoneofthoseinspirationalteachersliketheonesIhad.”

Mariastartedundeclared,butrealizedheroldhighschoolfavoritesubjectEnglishwascalling.“Ijustlikeanalyzingbooks,”sheadmits.“Ilikebringingyourperspectivetoabook.”

AfterearningtheirdegreesatUCLAtheLorenzanosreturnedtoSantaBarbaratoworkandsavesotheycouldeventually

attendgraduateschool.Theyvolunteered,too:AlejandrinaasamentorandPEACSiteCoordinatorforSantaBarbaraHighSchool;MariaasanA-OK(AfterSchoolOpportunitiesforKids)leaderforK-6gradestudentsatAdelanteCharterSchool.Bothshareastrongsenseofcommitmenttogivingback,pointingouthowcrucialAVIDwasforthem(inthepre-PEACdays)atSanMarcos

High.“OnedayourAVIDteachercametoclasswiththeformstoapplytotheUCsystem,”Alejandrinaremembers,“andtoldus,‘You’reallapplyingtocollegerightnow,it’spaidfor.’Ifhehadn’tencouragedusitwouldn’thavehappened.”

ReceivingPEACCommunityFellowshipsspeduptheirtimetabletobeabletoattendTEP.Tryingtogettheirtestingandapplicationsdone,thetwinshadtoheadtoLosAngelesfrequently,andtheykeptwhatwashappeningasecretfromtheirsinglemotheruntiltheykneweverythingwasset.“WesurprisedherwithaUCSBMomsweater,”Alejandrinarelates,“butatfirstshejustthoughtitwasaUCLAonesinceshehadlosthers.Thenwhenweexplainedshewassohappyshestartedcrying,especiallylearningwewouldbeabletostayintown.”

SotheLorenzanosgettobepartofseveralcommunities—theyareparticularlyenjoyingworkingwiththeirTEPcohort.“Everyoneiswillingtolendahelpinghand,”Mariasays.“There’ssomuchmutualrespectandmutualcollaboration.”

“Wegettostayandhelpourcommunity,andbecauseofthecommunitywearehere,”Alejandrinasumsup.“Webothwanttobethatteacherwhoencouragesstudentstogotocollege.OurAVIDteachersaid‘payitforward’andit’sfinallygoingtohappen.”

EndowedinPerpetuity Martha Aldridge Promise Award MarthaAldridgewasaUCSBstaffmemberfrom1961untilherdeathin1986.ThePromiseAwardisgiventoatopcredentialcandidateintheTeacherEducationProgramtoassistwiththetransitiontohis/herfirstteachingpositioninelementaryeducation.

Donald R. Atkinson Diversity Enhancement Award ThisawardisinhonorofProfessorEmeritusDonaldR.Atkinsonforhis30yearsofservicetotheprofessionofcounselingpsychology.Duringhistenure,ProfessorEmeritusAtkinsonwasdedicatedtomakingtheGevirtzGraduateSchoolofEducationonethatisaffirmingtoall.Theawardisgiventosupportstudentresearchoradissertationintheareaofmulticulturalcounselingpsychology.

Cynthia and Frederick Brinkmann Fellowship GenerouslysupportsstudentspursuingteachingcredentialsintheTeacherEducationProgram.

Dormon Commons Fellowship EstablishedinmemoryofDormonCommons,pastpresidentoftheCaliforniaBoardofEducation,thisfellowshipsupportsfinancialaidforgraduatestudentsintheSchoolofEducationwhoareclassroomteachersorprofessionaleducatorsreturningtoworkonadvanceddegrees.

Marika Ann Critelli Memorial Fellowship for Community Service EstablishedinmemoryofMarikaAnnCritelli,thisfellowshiphighlightsoneofthecorevaluesoftheTeacherEducationProgram–thatofcommunityservice.Itsupportscredentialcandidateswhohaveshownacommitmenttoprovidingcommunityservice,eitherthroughtheirowneffortsand/or

byprovidingopportunitiesforK-12studentstoengageinactivitiesthatbenefitlocalorglobalcommunities.

The James D. and Carol N. Dixon Graduate Fellowship SupportsMAorPh.D.studentswithafocusonreadingstudiesand/orthebroaderfieldofliteracystudies.ThereisaselectionpreferenceforEducationDepartmentstudentswhoareinvolvedinReadingClinicactivities.

The Priscilla and Susan Drum Memorial Endowed Fellowship EstablishedinmemoryofPriscillaDrum,aProfessorintheSchoolofEducationfrom1976-1994,andhersisterSusan.Thefellowshipsupportsqualifiedgraduatestudent(s)pursuinganMAorPh.D.withafocusonLiteracyintheEducationDepartment.Prioracademicmeritsarenotaneligibilityrequirement;however,recipientsdodemonstrateprospectivepromiseasscholars.Selectionpreferenceisgiventostudentswhohaveperseveredthroughhardshipsanddemonstratedgritinthepursuitoftheirvisionofbecomingscholars.

Delaine A. Eastin Fellowship SupportsstudentstopursueanMAorPh.D.inEducation.Qualifiedrecipientshaveacademicpromiseandarethefirstintheirfamilytoattendgraduateschool(“firstgeneration”).Whentherearemultipleeligiblecandidates,preferenceisgiventofemalestudents.

Peggy Fredericksen Memorial Fellowship PeggyFredericksenreceivedherB.A.inElementaryEducationfromUCSantaBarbarain1951.ShethenpursuedacareerteachingelementaryschoolinSantaBarbaraandLongBeach.ThisfellowshipfundhasbeencreatedtohonorandsustainhermemoryandpassionforK-12educationbysupportingTeacherEducationProgramcandidates.

Gevirtz Fellowship GevirtzFellowshipsareawardedfromanendowedfunddedicatedtosupportingGGSEprograms,activities,andstudentswhoshowpromiseforhavingapositiveimpactonpubliceducation.StudentsfromallareasoftheGevirtzSchoolareeligible.

ManyoftheGevirtzSchool2018-19fellowsattendedabreakfastandceremonyintheirhonorinJanuary2019.


Phillip & Helen Green Travel Fellowship EstablishedinmemoryofPhillipandHelenGreen.Thefellowshipsupportsacademicconferencerelatedtravelforgraduatestudents,withapreferenceforgraduatestudentsdoingclassroomresearchthatsupportsdemocraticpracticesandequityofaccessforimmigrantandsecondlanguagestudentsfromworkingclassbackgrounds.AnoverarchinggoalofthisfellowshipistomakevisiblescholarlyworkthatuncoverseffectivepracticesthatsupportstudentsingainingaccesstoAmericansociety.

Vivian Guerrier “Hope” Fellowship ThisfellowshiphonorslongtimeGevirtzSchoolstaffmemberVivianGuerrier,whodiedinAugust2007,aftermorethanadecadeofservicetotheGGSEandtheTeacherEducationProgram.TheVivianGuerrier“Hope”Fellowshipsrecognizeandencouragecredentialcandidateswhopersevereinspiteofhardshipstoaccomplishtheirvisiontobecomeeducatorsandwho,likeVivian,inspireotherswiththeircourageandintegrity.

Thomas G. Haring Memorial Fellowship EstablishedinmemoryofThomasG.Haring,amemberoftheGraduateSchoolofEducationfacultyandrenownedresearcherandteacher.Hisresearchandteachingfocusedonindividualswithseveredisabilities.Dr.Haringwascommittedtoimprovingthelotofindividualswithspecialneedsineducationandthecommunity.Thefellowshipsupportsstudentswithafocusontheeducationofindividualswithspecialneeds,withattentiontosocialandappliedcognitivebehavioranalysisinintegratededucationalandcommunitysettings.

James Hong Memorial Research Fund Fellowship EstablishedinmemoryofUCSBstudent,JamesHong.ThisfundsupportsgraduatestudentsinGGSE’sDepartmentofCounseling,Clinical,andSchoolPsychologywhoarepursuingresearchonat-riskyouthandschoolviolence,withthegoalofhelpingtopreventviolenceandpromotesafety.

Patty Hopkins-Acos Memorial Fellowship ThisfellowshipsupportsTeacherEducationProgramstudentsworkingtowardtheEducationalSpecialistCredential,whodemonstratetheprofessionalandpersonaldedicationexemplifiedbyPattyHopkins-Acosthroughouthercareerwithspecialneedschildren.Thisfellowshiprecognizesandencouragesfuturespecialeducationteacherswho,likePatty,inspireotherswiththeirexcitementaboutteaching,compassion,irrepressibleenergy,courage,integrity,andsenseofhumor.

Ray E. Hosford Memorial Fund Fellowship EstablishedinmemoryofRayE.Hosford,ProfessorofEducation,thisfundsupportsmerit-basedgraduatefellowshipsfordoctoralstudentsinCounselingPsychology,preferablygoingtothosepursuingresearchinSocialLearningTheory.

Dr. J Student Teacher Fellowship TheDr.JStudentTeacherFellowshipshonorthelegacyofDr.RichardJamgochian,formerDirectoroftheTeacher

EducationProgram.From1968-1991,“Dr.J”wasanenthusiasticandtirelessadvocateforteachereducation.RecipientsofthefellowshipshowpromiseasfutureteachersandexemplifytheidealsthatDr.Jpromoted.AccordingtoDr.J,learningtoteachshouldbeacollegialendeavor.Hejudgedteachingtobebothascienceandanart,andheencouragedteacherstoengageinon-goingself-examinationandprofessionaldevelopmenttomaintainskillsinbothendeavors.

Gale and Richard Morrison Fellowship EstablishedbyGevirtzSchoolProfessorandDeanEmeritus,GaleMorrison,andherhusbandRichardMorrison’69,thisfellowshipisawardedtotopapplicantstotheGevirtzSchooltopursueaPh.D.,ordeservingstudentswhohaveadvancedtoPh.D.candidacyandareworkingontheirdissertations.

Special Education Fellowship, AKA The Lamb Family Fellowship Supportsaspiringspecialeducationteacherswhoarededicatedtoalong-termprofessionalcommitmentofworkinginschoolsettingswithstudentswhoqualifyforspecialeducationservices,aswellaswiththeirfamilies.

GORDON MORRELL: FROM AN EDUCATION PH.D. TO PHILANTHROPY

WhenGordonMorrell(Ph.D.,Education,CounselingPsychologyemphasis,’76)titledhisfall2018Fast&Curiouslecture“TheLongandWindingRoad,”itwasn’tjustsohecouldbeginbyserenadingthecrowdwithsomeBeatles.(Althoughhedidshowoffhismusicalchops,partoftheskillsetthathelpedhimpayhiswaythroughUCSB.)Instead,thesongillustratedhowhewentfromstudyingcounselingpsychologyatUCSBtoanAssistantProfessorshipinMaine,onlytoreturntoSantaBarbara,helpingcreatefirst-geneducationalsoftwareandthenjoiningYardiSystems,where,yearslater,heisnowExecutiveVicePresident.

Morrellwasmorethanwillingtoexplainhowadoctorateineducationpreparedhimtohelpmanageacompanythatsupportsindustry-leadinginvestmentandpropertymanagementsoftwareforalltypesandsizesofrealestatecompanies.“GGSEpreparedustolisten,tobeempathetic,toanalyze,andtoact,”hebegan.“Oneofthemostimportantskillsforamanageristheabilitytounderstandwhatisgoingoninthemoment.Beingabletolistencarefullyandempathizeiscriticaltosuccess.Forexample,manytimesaclientwillcallwithoneagenda(‘INEEDTHISCHANGETOMORROW!’),wheninfactthesubtextmaybedifferent(‘ItoldmybossI’dhavethischangetomorrow.SorryIdidn’tmentionthattoyou,butifyoudon’thelpmeoutI’lllookbad.’)”

TherewereevenmorecruciallessonslearnedattheGevirtzSchoolyearsbeforeithadthatname,suchas“theabilitytodiginandanalyzeasituation.”Morrellhasexhibitedthatskillrepeatedly,nottheleastwhenin1979hebecameDirectorofChildDevelopmentProgramsattheSantaBarbaraOfficeoftheCountySuperintendentofSchoolsandknewitwastimetocomputerize.“Whilesomebristleatchange,Ibelieveweshouldunderstandit,embracewhatwelike,andworktochangewhatwedon’tlike,”Morrellinsists.“Andmaybethat’sametaphorforlifeingeneral.”

OfcoursethedigitalworldhaschangedradicallyfromthosedaysofAppleIIcomputerstotoday’ssmartphones.WhichiswhyMorrellpointsout,“Ican’tunderscoreenoughtheemphasisonclearcommunication.ProbablythebiggestchangeinthebusinessworldwasthegrowthoftheInternet,andsubsequentonset,orshouldIsayonslaught,ofemail.GGSEhelpedusgetourthoughtsinorderandpresentthem,whetherverballyorinwriting,clearlyandconcisely.”

It’snosurprise,then,thatMorrellandYardicurrentlysupportprogramsthatteachreadingandwritinginYardi’sclients’multi-familycommunities. AfewyearsagoYardibeganlookingatwaystoworkwithclientsthathaveeducationprogramsintheirlocations.“Wenarrowedourfocustotryingtohelpchildreninthesecommunitiesreadatgradelevelbythirdgrade.Thismilestonehasbeenshowntobeanimportantindicatorofsuccessinthechild’sfuture,”Morrellpointsout,soundingliketheformeracademicheis.

Soheturnedtohisalmamaterforhelp.First,hecalledhisoldfriendandmentor,JulesZimmer,foradvice.Dr.Zimmer,formerDeanofGGSE,spentmuchofhiscareerworkingwithyoungchildren.TheadvicewastospeaktosomeofthefacultyatGGSE,perhapstodevelopauniqueprogramthatcouldbeinstitutedatvariouscentersacrossthecountry.YardilookedatanumberofoptionsbeforefindinganexcellentlearningprogramalreadyinexistenceatPeoples’Self-HelpHousing(PSHH),aYardiclientbasedintheSantaBarbara/Ventura/SanLuisObispotri-countiesarea.PSHHoffersTheYouthLiteracyProgram,whichserves250residentK-12studentsatninedifferentproperties.Fourdaysaweekfor45minutesstudentsworkindependently,andwithaneducator,toimprovegradelevelreading.Studentsuseaweb-basedprogram,ReadingPlus,andarealsoofferedone-on-onetutoring.

“WelikedtheprogramandtheattitudeofitsexecutiveswhowereveryopentohavingtheGevirtzSchool—ledbyDr.MattQuirk—analyzethelevelofsuccessandoffersuggestionsforimprovement,”Morrellsays.Theprogramisbasedinaffordablehousingcentersthatservefamilieswhoqualifytoliveinthesecommunities.“Thisisanongoingprojectthatwehope,someday,willgrowfarbeyondthebordersofthetri-counties.”

LearninghowtomakegoodsystemsscalableiscertainlyoneofMorrell’sskills.WhenhejoinedYardiSystemsinMarch1990,hewasoneoftheir25employees.NearlythreedecadeslaterYardihas6,650-employeecompanywith42officesin14countries.“Yardi’scorporatemottois‘Takecareofourclients,takecareofouremployees,takecareofourcommunities,stayfocused,andgrow,’”Morrellexplains.“Wetakeallfiveofthesetasksveryseriouslyandhavebeenworkingwithnonprofitorganizationinourcommunitiesformanyyears.”AndtheGevirtzSchoolisheartenedtobeabletotakepartinhelpingmakethatcarehappen.


SURPASSING 20+ IN 2020: AN INITIATIVE MAKING REMARKABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO

THE FIELD OF SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY

WiththeirroletosupporthealthystudentlearningandhealthyteacherteachingonK-12campuses,schoolpsychologistsarevitaltothenourishmentofafunctioningstudentbody.Atthesametimethatmentalhealthconcerns,expectationsforsuccess,andthestressofsocialmediaarerisingacrossschooldistrictsanduniversities,thereisashortageofschoolpsychologistsacrossthenation,largelyduetoanentiregeneration’sretirementoutoftheprofession.Anewgroupofschoolpsychologyscholars—equippedwithhigh-standardsforqualityresearch,avisionofwheretoleadthefield,andthepracticaltoolstosupportchildrenacrosssystems—aremakingremarkablecontributionsatthedoctorateleveltoaddressthefield’sneeds.Thebestpart?They’reUCSBAlumni,driventothehighestlevelofacademicsuccessbywayofthe2020DoctoralScholarsInitiative.

In2006,Dr.ShaneJimerson,ProfessorintheDepartmentofCounseling,Clinical,andSchoolPsychology(CCSP),envisionedandimplementedthe2020DoctoralScholarsInitiative—anefforttoprepareatleasttwentyschoolpsychologyPh.D.students,ofwhom50%wouldbefromhistoricallyunderrepresentedand/ormarginalizedgroups,forfacultypositionsinthefieldofschoolpsychologybytheyear2020.“TherewasanincredibleneedandopportunityforUCSantaBarbaratofurthercontributetoscience,scholarship,andthepreparationofthenextgenerationofschoolpsychologists,”Jimersonsays.“SchoolpsychologyfacultyatUCSBhavebeentremendouslysuccessfulinpreparingdoctoralstudentsforsuccessinacademia,whilealumniaremakingimportantcontributionstoadvancingscience,understanding,andpractice.”

Fourteenyearslater,thegoalhasalreadybeensurpassed.Twenty-sixPh.D.studentshaveearnedacademicfacultypositionsatinstitutionsacrossthenation,suchasCalStateLosAngeles,SacramentoState,ChapmanUniversity,UniversityofColorado-Denver,LoyolaMarymountUniversity,NorthCarolina

StateUniversity,UtahStateUniversity,andUniversityofWisconsin-Madison.Moreover,75%ofthesegraduatesarefromgroupsoutsidethestereotypicalwhitemaledemographicoffacultymembers,whichisimportantforthenation’sincreasinglydiversestudentpopulationstoberepresentedamongcampusleaders.“DuetotheopportunitiesaffordedtomeasagraduateoftheCCSPdepartment,”saysalumnaDr.JennicaPaz,“Iamnowuniquelypositionedtobeabletoadvocateforyouthandfamilieswhoareunabletoadvocateforthequalityeducationalandmentalhealthservicestheysodeserve.Ialsonowhavetheprivilegetotrainfutureschoolpsychologychangeagentstocontinuetopushforhighqualityschoolpsychologicalservicedeliveryforstudentswithadverselifeexperiencesthroughteaching,mentoring,research,andcommunitypartnerships.”

TheinitiativehasgrownsuccessfullyovertheyearsbecauseofthecommitmentbyfacultymembersDrs.ShaneJimerson,JillSharkey,ErinDowdy,andMattQuirk,aswellasErikaFelixandMichaelFurlong.Together,theyleveragedtheirprofessionalnetworks,personalstrengths,andscholarlyexcellencetoadviseandmentorPh.D.studentstopursuecareersasleadersinthefieldofschoolpsychology.Bypreparingthescholarswhogoontopreparemoreschoolpsychologists,andnurturingthoseconnectionstothisday,theirworkhasalreadyirreversiblyalteredthefield.“Thefacultytoldusthatwewerenotjusttheirstudents,”reflectsCCSPgraduateDr.EuiKim,“butalsotheirfuturecolleagues.Theytrulytreatedusthatway,whichIbelievefurtherimprovedmycompetencetopursuemycareerinacademia.”

LOOKING BACK AT A TEN-YEAR PARTNERSHIP WITH HARDING

OnJanuary22,2010,all600+studentsandfacultyofSantaBarbara’sHardingSchoolsatinUCSantaBarbara’sCorwinPavilionandmimedwritingtheirnamesintheairasiftheyallweresigningtheMOUthatcreatedtheHardingUniversityPartnershipSchool.OnthedaisUCSBChancellorHenryYang,thenSantaBarbaraUnifiedSuperintendentBrianSarvis,thenHardingPrincipalSallyKingston,andthenGevirtzSchoolDeanJaneCloseConleysignedtheactualMOU,usheringinaneweraofeducationinSantaBarbara.ThisstoryisalookbackatonlyafewofthehighlightsoftenyearsofpartnershipbetweenUCSBandthewestsideelementaryschool.

“OneofmymostengagingeffortsattheGevirtzSchoolwasourcollaborationwithSantaBarbaraUnifiedSchoolDistrictinestablishingtheHardingUniversityPartnershipSchool,”Conoley,whoisnowPresidentofCalStateLongBeach,recalls.“PairingthesubstantialresourcesfromtheeducatorsatHardingwithourstudentteachers,researchers,andspecialeducationandpsychologicalserviceteamsrepresentedamodeltomeabouthowgraduateschoolsofeducationandlocalschoolsshouldshareanddirectresourcesforstudentsuccess.”

AnnualUCSBCampusVisitFortenyearsatleastthe4ththrough6thgradesofHardinghavevisitedUCSBforadaytolearnthatcomingtocollegeisapossiblegoal.Oncampustheyhavedoneabitofeverything:holdskinksandwritepoetrywithSantaBarbara’sPoetLaureate,liftseaurchinsgingerlyoutoftouchtanksanddressupinendlesslayerslikeAntarcticexplorers,buildandtestrubber-bandpoweredrocketsandrestorenativewetlandbyplantingnewseedlings.

“WorkingwiththeHardingstudentswasalwaysgreatfun,butthemostimportantgoalwastohelpthemfeelwelcomeandcomfortablewiththeUCSBstudents,facultyandcampus,sotheywouldsetagoalofcomingbackwhentheywerelikelymuchtallerandreadytotakeadvantageofamorelengthylearningexperienceasundergraduates,”recallsSueJohnson,nowretired,butalong-timebelovedteacherofscienceteachersatGGSE.“ThoseofuswhospendmoretimewiththetallerversionswerepleasedbutalsotiredbythetimethestudentsboardedthebusestogobacktoHarding,butthestudentsthemselveswerestillfullofenergyandnow,greatmemories.”

ManyofthosememoriestookplaceatUCSB’sMarineScienceInstitute(MSI).ScottSimon,DirectorattheREEF(ResearchExperienceandEducation

HardingstudentsatthetouchtankatUCSB’sREEFwithHardingteacherandTEPalumnaMeganReed(MST,M.Ed.,’17).Hardingstudentsall“sign”theMOUthatcodifiedtheUCSB-Hardingpartnershipin2010.


Facility),andMSI’sEducationOutreachProgramManager,takesparticularprideintakingpart,saying,“HavinggrownupinSantaBarbara,ithasbeenveryrewardingworkingwiththeteacherstolinkUCSBresearch,fishing,andoceanculturestooceansciencecurriculumthatistrulyaboutthisplace.SeeingtheHUPSstudentslightupabouttheconnectionsbetweenscienceandtheirmaritimecommunityhasbeeninspirational.”

Simonparticularlyrecallsthatsevenyearsintothepartnership,the6thgraderswerethefirstHUPSgraduatingclass.“ThatcohortbeganHUPSaskindergartenersandhadbeentoUCSBeveryyear,”hepointsout.“IhadthehonorofparticipatingintheirpromotionceremonyatHarding,wherethestudentsweregivenUCSBcertificatesandpinstocommemoratethemilestone!”

“TheHarding-UCSBpartnershipisawin-win-win,”saysSallyKingston(Education,Ph.D.,’04),whowasinstrumentalinhelpingcreatethecollaborationtenyearsagoasPrincipal.“Everyyear,studentsgettoengageinhands-onlearningtaughtbyprofessorsandgraduatestudentsatUCSB.TeachersandstaffgettolearnbestpracticesfromUCSBfaculty,andUCSBgetstolearnfromHarding.”Kingston,whoisnowSeniorDirectorofResearch&EvidenceatBuckInstituteforEducation,inparticularsays,“Myfavoritememoryisgettinganemailfromfourth-graderDiego’smomthatdescribedhowhecamehomefromtheannualUCSBvisitanddownloadedtheapplicationandaskedwhenhecouldapply.”

FamilyStrengthsCenterKeenlyawarethattimeatschoolisonlyonecomponentofastudent’sgrowth,theGGSEfoundedTheFamilyStrengthsCenteratHardingtosupportthehealthydevelopmentofchildrenofallagesinthecontextoftheirschoolcommunityandfamilies.Students,teachers,andparentstrustedthegraduatestudentcounselors,manyofwhomwerebiculturalandbilingual.Thecounselors’involvementwithfamilieshelpedparentsusetheirpersonalandculturalstrengthstopromotehealthydevelopmentintheirchildren.

“Wehelpedparentsincreasetheirchildren’ssuccessinschoolthroughincreasingtheparents’knowledgeofwhatwasexpectedintheclassroomandhowtheparentscouldsupporttheirchildren’ssuccess,”saysProfessorCollieConoley,wholedtheinitiative.“Wetaughttheparentsgamestoplaywiththeirchildrentomakefollowingdirectionsandlearningfun.”Attimesthechildrenandtheirfamiliesneededmoreintensivehelp.Havingacenterintheschoolincreasedtheabilityofthefamiliestoattendanddecreasedthenegativestigmaofseekingoutmentalhealthservices.Conoleyconcludes,“Workingwiththefamilieshelpedtheentirefamily.”

TheMulti-TieredSystemofSupports(MTSS)BehavioralHealthProgramYearsaftertheFamilyStrengthsCentergrantranout,TheGevirtzSchooljoinedwithnumerouscommunitypartnerstocreatetheWestsideHealthCollaborative.Creatingwhathasbeencalledapilotsystemfortheentireschooldistrict,agroupofmorethantenundergraduatesledbyaCounseling,Clinical&SchoolPsychologydoctoralstudentintroducedMTSStoHarding,therebyexposingtheentireHUPSstudentpopulationtothevariousformsofbehavioralhealthsupport.Theyear-longprojecthelpedcontributetoschoolwideawarenessofbehavioralhealthneedsandreducedstigmaaroundreceivingbehavioralhealthservices.Theworkrangedfromteacherconsultationandclassroom-widesupportstohelptargettestanxietytodirectcounselingwithstudentsthemostinneed.Forexampleonefifthgraderlostasistertocancer,sotheMTSSteamnotonlytaughthimcalmingtechniques,butalsohowtofeelcomfortablediscussinghisobviousfeelingsoflossandgrief.HardingPrincipalVeronicaBinkleysays,“Thiswas,withoutadoubt,themostpoignantlearningthisstudenthadallyear.”

Hardingstudentsworkonrestoringcoastalwetlandsbyplanting nativeseedlingsduringoneoftheirannualvisitstocampus.


HolidayCardForyearsnow,theGevirtzSchoolholidaycardhasfeaturedartfromHardingstudents.Hardingteacherswouldsolicitartfeaturingnatural/seasonalimagesandthemesofpeaceandlove.ThentheGevirtzSchool—oftenprofessorsherewhoalsopaint—wouldpickthebestimageforreproductionandmailingaboutthecountry.

The2018cardwasevenacollaborativeproject,asalltheartstudentscreatedaleafthatwasthenweavedintoawreath.“Itoldthestudentsweweredoingaprojectfortheholidaycardandtheywereexcitedtoknowthatallofthecollegekidswouldseetheirwork,”saysHUPSteacherandTEPalumnaKatherineSerdio(’18MST,M.Ed.).“IdecidedtodoacollaborativeprojecttoshowcasetheworkofallHardingstudents.Leavesweretheeasiestcommunalprojectforages4-12.Itwasfuntoseethedifferentleavesthatwereproducedfromeachgrade.Itwassomeunbe-LEAF-ablework!”

TEPConnectionAsofthewritingofthisstory,sevenalumnifromUCSB’sTeacherEducationProgramworkasteachersatHarding.Theneachyear,fourorfiveelementaryteachercandidatesareplacedatHardingfortheirstudenttraining,switchingbetweenuppergradeandlowergradeclassroomsforafullerexperienceastheyworktowardstheirmultiplesubjectteachingcredentials.

“IwashonoredtoworkatHarding,”saysKatherineSerdio,artteacherintheholidaycardsectionofthisstoryandaSantaBarbaralocal.“Itisoneof

theoldestelementaryschoolsinSantaBarbaraandisabsolutelygorgeous.PriortoattendingUCSBTEP,IwassubbingforSantaBarbaraUnifiedSchoolDistrict.Myfirstjobwasa5thgradeclassatHarding.Itwasalmostaglimpseintomyfutureandwhatwasmeanttobe.”

Serdiotellsjustonestoryofthetransformativepowerofteaching,andthesynergybetweenUCSBandHUPS.“TEPbestpreparedmetoteachatHardingbyhelpingmefindoutwhoIamasaneducator.Therewereobstacles,bothemotionallyandmentally,andTEPprovidedmewiththesupportIneededtopushforward,”sheasserts.“Itwasthemostchallengingandrewardingexperienceallatthe sametime.”

CommunityBasedLiteraciesHardingfourthgradersandUCSBundergraduateshuddletogether,discussingreadingfromdifferentdisciplinesthatcanoftentripupyoungstudents—textsofferingdataintables,figures,andcharts.Ledbytheir“collegebuddies,”thefourthgradersgrewinskillsandconfidenceandbyyear’sendcouldevaluateandquestionideasandassertionspresentedinthetexts.TheGevirtzSchool’sMcEnroeReadingandLanguageArtsClinicofferedcourseworkandworkshopstotheUCSBfacilitatorstoensuretheyweresufficientlytrained.Trainingcontentfocusedontheoreticalandempiricalworkrelatedtoreadingcomprehensionandcriticalanalysisofevidence-basedargumentation.

Theprogram,calledCommunityBasedLiteracies(CBL)forthe21stCentury,establishedanewmodelforwaysUCSBcouldimproveHardingstudentoutcomes.

“CBLhasbeenagamechangeratHarding,”statesprincipalVeronicaBinkley.“Studentsforthepasttwoyearsthathavebeenpartoftheprogramhaveblossomedintheirdesiretoreadandtoreadwidely.”Thestatsbackupherclaims,asHarding’scurrentfourthgradeclassscoredhigherthananyformercohortwith56.2%readingatorabovegradelevel.What’smore,Binkleyseesmoregeneralimprovementstiedtothesegains,saying,“Theirattentiontodetailthroughinstructioninclosereadinghastransferredintoothersubjectsandintoworkhabits.Theyareengagedstudents,withahighlevelofconcernforsuccess.Asagroup,theyarearticulate,polite,andanxioustosharetheirlearning.”

SeveraltimesayeartheGevirtzSchoolorganizesavolunteerdaytodoworkontheHardingcampus.Herevolunteersworkonbuildingnewgardenboxes.
