I am pleased to be asked to contribute to the LSS Newsletter and would like to introduce myself to new members. My name is Carol Titmus and I have been a member of LSS for over fifteen years. What keeps me coming back term after term, year after year, is the involvement I am able to have with the school community. I have joined many different classes in those fifteen years and met some great people who are willing to share their knowledge and skills with others. This is my second term on the Committee, and I would be pleased to be able to help you in any way I can. One of my Committee portfolios is Tutor Liaison Officer which sounds very grand. In reality I can be a go-between for you as a tutor, or as a member of a class, to take to the Committee or others suggestions, ideas, and even complaints, so they can be attended to in an open forum, seeking a good outcome if possible. If I don’t have the information you need to hand, I will find it for you if possible. I am also part of a Sub-Committee which looks after risk assessment. We have already been active in holding a meeting to check any areas which could pose a risk to members. I would be appreciative of any input you may have if you become aware of something that could pose a risk to yourself or others. This could be an actual risk or a perceived risk. Just put it in writing so that I can present the matter to the Committee when we meet. Many of you will know me as a Tutor/Co-ordinator of the Tasmanian Experiences Class. I have been involved with the class in this capacity for a few years now and am always interested to hear from school members who feel they could contribute with a story about their travel, their experiences in the work force in the past, or a hobby they may be passionate about. I’d love to hear your story, or the story of someone outside the school who you think would be an interesting speaker. New members may not have noticed our library in the entry hall. We have two large cupboards which are open each school day. The library is packed with donations from within the school and there is extra shelving in Room 5 behind the kitchen area, which holds recently added books. There are fiction and non-fiction volumes available. October 2020

Hello everyone.

There is no charge, no ticketing or late fees. We only ask that you return what you have borrowed so that others may enjoy them, and if you have any books to donate, we are more than happy to accept books printed in recent years. At the end of each term, the books are rotated and culled, and new ones added so that there is always something of interest available for you.

The benefits of being a member of LSS can be twofold; participating where you can, even perhaps at a small level, and giving assistance to another, enhances not only your enjoyment in a class setting, but helps create a sense of belonging.

At least this is what I feel. Carol Titmus

LSS Bus Tours

King Island - February 2021 - Our three-day LSS trip to King Island is sold out and we’re ready to go!

Waddamana, Lakes & Valleys Thursday 7 January 2021

Located in Tasmania’s rugged Central Highlands, Waddamana is the site of Hydro Tasmania’s first power station and the centrepiece of the Great Lake Power Scheme.

Development of the Waddamana Power Station and the scheme commenced in 1910 through a private company, however financial struggles forced a sale to the Tasmanian government in 1914. Tasmania’s Hydro-Electric Department was formed to continue the ambitious development.

Construction in this isolated region was difficult, with limited access in for workers, supplies and equipment. However, the resilience and determination of the Central Highlands people prevailed, with Waddamana A Power Station commissioned in 1916 with two operational generators.

The visionary development deep in the centre of Tasmania was officially opened with great ceremony by Governor-General Sir Ronald Munro-Ferguson on 6 May 1916, and heralded Tasmania’s move into the industrial age.

During our visit today we can tour the turbine hall, with hands-on exposure to the might Pelton wheel turbines that first began generating electricity over a century ago.

The original machinery at Waddamana has been faithfully restored, along with some of the equipment from the old Shannon Power Scheme. Historical photographs and memories give an insight into what life was like in the early days of this small but social village deep in the Central Highlands.

The management of the Great Lakes Hotel helped us out with the use of their facilities during our last outing, so we thought we would repay the kind gesture by dropping in for lunch today. We will be warmly welcomed and it will also give us an opportunity to take a look at the changes they have made in the past year. Our journey home will be via the very picturesque Golden Valley.

Cost per person: $95.00, includes tour, morning tea and lunch.

Southern Treats Monday 18 January 2021

We’re off down south on this day tour. What can you expect ou our outing?

Firstly we travel via Mud Walls Road passing through Colebrook, Campania and Richmond, arriving at Eastlands Shopping Centre for a hit of ‘retail therapy’. Sounds like something a little different!

After a little spend-up we will take a short journey to Lindisfarne and in particular to the Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania. What a great waterfront spot for our midday meal!

Abalone is a very popular seafood and enjoyed by people all over the world. Following our visit to Tas Live Abalone we will not only understand the industry a great deal more than we did previously, but we will also get to taste some freshly prepared. Yum!

Cost per person: $95.00, includes tour, morning tea and lunch.

Bookings and Payment

At this stage, no payment is required for the three-day King Island tour.

However, bookings and payment are required now for both day trips and can be made at the LSS Office any weekday between 9.00am and 12.00pm, by cash, cheque or EFTPOS.

As always, refunds depend upon our financial commitment at that time.

In the meantime, if you have any questions about our travels, please phone me on 6344 3330 and if I don’t know the answer I will find out. If I don’t answer the phone, please call again.

LAUNCESTON SCHOOL FOR SENIORS Inc. COVID-19 Safety Plan 2020

Tutor / Member Responsibilities

Introduction

Launceston School for Seniors (LSS) has public liability insurance covering our members against personal injury, but it does not cover you for COVID-19. You attend the school at your own risk in relation to COVID-19, however LSS is obliged to provide a Safety Plan covering minimum standards to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within the school.

We all have a duty of care to one another and need to follow these standards, despite any inconvenience. Remember that you cannot see, smell or hear COVID-19 but you can touch and inhale it. Tutors and members of classes conducted outdoors or at premises other than High Street should ensure this advice to followed as much as practicable, particularly Physical Distancing.

Risk

It is vitally important that anyone that has symptoms of cold or flu or has been in contact with anyone testing positive to COVID-19 in the past 14 days, does not attend the school.

No drink-making facilities will be available at the school. Members must bring pre-prepared drinks and their own cups if required.

If it is necessary to cough or sneeze, it must be done into the elbow, or into a tissue which should be immediately placed in the bin.

Members must follow the instructions of tutors at all times during class and leave the room if required.

Only tutors or class co-ordinators should use door handles, light switches, heater controls etc., and must use sanitiser after doing so.

Members seeking access to classrooms when the door is closed must knock on the door and wait to be admitted.

Members must then proceed directly to the next available chair furthest from the door, to restrict the amount of passing traffic.

Members are to leave the building as soon as their class is finished and not congregate in the common room.

Only one tutor / member is to visit the office at any one time and not pass the doorway unless invited. Other members wishing to visit must wait outside until the hallway is clear.

Cleaning

The school buildings are cleaned nightly by the Launceston Library contract cleaners, but it is every member’s responsibility to clean the table and chair they occupy in the classroom.

Disinfectant wipes are available in each classroom and must be used to clean each table and chair both before and after the class.

Hygiene

Hand sanitisers are available outside the door of each classroom. You must use the sanitiser to clean your hands when entering or leaving the classroom. Personal sanitiser bottles are available for tutors or class co-ordinators use when

touching door handles etc. Soap is available in the toilets. Waiting for vacant cubicles is only permitted in the

hallway outside and social distancing should be observed.

Physical Distancing

Chairs have been placed at a minimum of 1.5 metres distance apart within each classroom. There are 12 chairs in room 2, 3, 4 and the Art room. Room 1 has 10 chairs.

Chairs must remain at least 1.5 metres apart at all times. When moving about in the classroom it will not be possible to maintain 1.5 metres so

members must move past other members as quickly as possible. Members must not stop next to other members when moving to and from their chairs. If more than one member is waiting for admittance to a room, they must maintain social

distancing. Workers or office staff must knock on the door without entering the classroom and the

tutor or class co-ordinator must move outside the room to converse.

Track and Trace

Tutors or class co-ordinators must ensure they have a current class list before commencing each class.

Tutors or class co-ordinators must call the class list to confirm who is in attendance at each class.

There must be no more than 12 people in a classroom (10 in room 1). If space permits, school members not on the class list may attend a class but their name

must be added to the list for that class. The completed class list must be taken to the school office at the end of each class to

be copied and held on record. This record is available to WorkSafe or other authorities on request.

If nobody is in attendance at the office, tutors or class co-ordinators should place the class list in the box provided on the table outside the office, and retrieve the class list from the office prior to their next class.

Classes conducted at venues other than High Street should email their class lists to [email protected] as soon as possible after their class.

COVID-19 Incident

Should a member suddenly feel unwell they must immediately go home and contact their doctor.

If the member is unable to drive home the tutor or office staff must call an ambulance using the telephone on the kitchen / foyer wall.

The tutor must alert the office immediately or, if the office is closed, call the Chair, John Husband on 0419 130 778 or Vice-Chair, Mick Farrell on 0439 110 513.

The member must notify LSS as soon as possible regarding the outcome of their test. Other members that have been in contact must go home immediately and self-isolate until

contacted by office staff or appropriate authorities. The Chair / Vice-Chair will inform Shelley DeCesare / Tanya Atkinson at Launceston Library

on 6777 2446 and Public Health on 1800 671 738 if a positive test is notified.

The Launceston School for Seniors will act on advice from the Health Department at all times.
