What an exciting season we have ahead of us with a great season of Jazz, our 28th season of Cabaret, Halloween, Santa in the House and much more! We have had an amazing year; so far our small team of staff and volunteers have raised £1,766,000 in our fundraising campaign to transform Lauderdale House. We have just £333,000 to go to reach our target and start the transformation. Please see the centre pages for more information. Zena James With Simon Allen (sax), Mike Bradley (dms), Johnny Copland (bs), Mike Guy (pno)Thu 9 Oct | 8.30pm | £10 (£9 Concs)Soulful blues-tinged singer Zena James brings catchy grooves and infectious energy. Inspired as much by 70’s soul as by the jazz greats, Zena’s enjoyed great reviews for her funky new take on popular and rare jazz gems and irresistible, low-down R&B sounds. Expect funky arrangements of popular jazz standards and groove-laden self-penned originals.

Renato D’Aiello | ConfluencesWith Sandro Zerafa (gtr), Hiroshi Murayama (pno), Nicola Muresu (db bs), Ivano Fortuna (dms)Thu 16 Oct | 8.30pm | £10 (£9 Concs)Inspired by two years of packing the upstairs of Ronnie Scott’s with guests from all over the world. Confluences is a fascinating aural journey around the world with each song representing a different place. Murayama won the Grand Prix at the Yokohama Festival. Sandro Zerafa is Director of the Malta Jazz Festival and organiser of the Paris Underground Collective.

Larry Bartley & Just UsFeat. Ed Jones (ten/sop/b cl), Tony Kofi (sax), Rod Youngs (dms)Thu 23 Oct | 8.30pm | £10 (£9 Concs)Since their album launch at The Crypt in February, the word is out that this is the hottest new band on the circuit. For years Bartley has played bass with the best, including Abdullah Ibrahim, Stanley Turrentine and Courtney Pine. Larry’s first album Along This Way was released in 2003 and was nominated for Best New Work in the BBC Jazz awards. Jones, Youngs and Kofi are up there with the very best, saturated in experience in every area of the music. “Don’t miss them, you will regret it…” says Phil Rose Birmingham Jazz.

Alison Rayner | ARQWith Diane Mcloughlin (sax), Deirdre Cartwright (gtr), Steve Lodder (pno), Buster Birch (dms)Thu 30 Oct | 8.30pm | £10 (£9 Concs) ARQ is a closely-attuned and creative ensemble of some of London’s finest jazz musicians led by Alison Rayner, a bass-player and composer for almost 40 years. Part of a nationwide tour to coincide with the release of her first album August, Alison’s original compositions draw on a love for lyrical melodies, deep grooves and influences from folk, funk and Latin.

Nigel PriceWith Vassilis Xenopoulos (sax), Ross Stanley (org), Matt Home (dms)Thu 13 Nov | 8.30pm | £10 (£9 Concs)Veteran of the James Taylor Quartet guitarist Nigel Price’s Organ Trio won the Best Band category at the 2010 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. This concert is inspired by hard swinging Wes Montgomery and is one of forty dates in a national tour. The addition of Vassilis Xenopoulos, a truly sensational player lifts the band to new levels of tonal variety, while Ross Stanley, surely the most in demand keyboard player in London, also makes for even more anticipation.

Tommaso Starace – Long Live Cannonball! With Dave Newton (pno), Laurence Cottle (bs), Tommy Bradascio (dms)Thu 20 Nov | 8.30pm | £10 (£9 Concs)Cannonball Adderley inspired a generation by developing a big and expressive sound particularly in the high register of his instrument. Tommaso will be exploring Cannonball’s career who collaborated with the likes of Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul, and Bobby Timmons. This is a rich seam of quintessential classics presented by one of Europe’s rising jazz stars. Don’t miss this, our London Jazz Festival presentation.

Brandon Allen – Salute to Gene AmmonsWith Ross Stanley (pno), Mick Hutton (d bs), Chris Higginbottom (dms)Thu 27 Nov | 8.30pm | £10 (£9 Concs)In the explosively creative jazz years of the fifties and sixties Gene Ammons’ big ‘Texas tenor’ sound made him a natural for Brandon to admire. “Allen is arguably the most exciting tenor player in Britain today” wrote Tony Hall, producer of Tubby Hayes’s first legendary albums, in Jazzwise. Bassist Mick Hutton, who has worked with everybody from Humphrey Lyttelton to John Surman told us “...this is the best band I have ever been in.”

Christine Tobin – The Music of Leonard CohenWith Phil Robson (gtr), Dave Whitfield (d bs)Thu 4 Dec | 8.30pm | £10 (£9 Concs)Winner of this year’s Jazz Vocalist of the Year Parliamentary Jazz Award and last year’s Edinburgh Festival Herald Angel Award, In recent years Christine’s projects, based on the music of Carole King’s Tapestry album, or the poetry of WB Yeats have taken her into areas barely touched by other jazz artists. This year, her tours of Leonard Cohen’s music have been more successful than ever: so book your seats early.
