Latino Sunset Festivalat Lakeview Park in Lorain, Ohio

LORAIN, Ohio — The Latino Sunset Festi-val was held Sunday, September 30th at

Lorain’s Lakeview Park. A great event held to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month 2012.

The festival featured Lorain’s Sammy De Leon and Su Orches-tra playing salsa and Latin jazz.

Performances were also by Peru recording artist Enrique In-fante who was outstanding.

There were many ways to en-joy yourself besides the music, including food and art that makes this event one that people from all across the state enjoy year af-ter year.

Dance performances were by dancers from Alma de Mexico, Esencia Boricua Cultural De Lorain, and Julia de Burgos of Cleveland. There was artwork from various Latino artists rep-resenting work from different Latino countries and many other thing to enjoy like Mexican and Puerto Rican food,and family fun including face painting.

All this was set against the beautiful backdrop of Lorain’s Lakeview Park and Beach over-looking Lake Erie. The festival was this most beautiful Latino Festival setting in all of Ohio. If you missed it this year be looking for it next year.

Elizabeth Santana is from Lorain Ohio and is one of the most talent-ed face painters I have ever seen. She does it to bring joy to under privilege kids in the low income parts of the city of Lorain. She goes under Lizzie’z Face Paint. She love that people get great joy from her artwork on their faces. She likes to bring a little something to people who need a little joy

in their life. Her business card reads “Face painting art for kids and for the young at heart.” She said it’s something that makes her happy and that it is a true joy the see people’s faces light up after creating art on them or on their kids face. Ana Luisa Sanchez is among a grow-ing group of Latinas influencing art in Ohio. She started as a painter but has

steadily moved to her unique Paper Ma-che creations of “La Catrina.” “La Ca-trina” is one of the most popular folk art themes in Mexico where skeletal forms often appear in art. She stated “I’m from a country where the dead hold hands with the living. She says her love of the Catri-nas has always been in her. But it intensi-fied after frequent visits to the small vil-lage of Capula in the state of Michoacan.

There, for decades, Mexican families have handcrafted clay Catrina figures and fired them in wood kilns. Ana Luisa’s

first Catrinas were also kiln fired. Now she uses wire, paper mache, plaster, feath-ers and brightly colored fabrics to unique-ly hand craft each Catrina; there are no duplicates. She said “These ladies talk to me; they each want to live again and they do indeed come alive in my hands.” “I love them.”

Ana Luisa is a native of Puebla in mountainous central Mexico. She came to the United States in 1992, to Columbus, Ohio in 1999 and Cleveland in 2005. She lives with her husband, John, and daugh-ter, Carolina, in Cleveland’s “Ohio City” neighborhood. In addition to numerous exhibitions, she also owned and oper-ated “Arte Mexicano,” a gallery of Latin art and handcrafts in Columbus, Ohio’s Short North Arts District from 2002 until 2005.


The Puerto Rican Home celebrated their 55 years of serving the Puerto Rican commu-nity in Lorain Coun-ty. For 55 years, the Puerto Rican Home

has preserved Puerto Rican culture for the residents of Lorain and continues to sur-vive in a time when many other cultural clubs are closing down.

The Puerto Rican Home, or El Hogar

Puertorriqueno, was created in 1957 at 2933 Vine Ave. as a way to give immi-grating Puerto Ricans a place that felt like home.

In the late 1940s, the National Tube Company brought 500 Puerto Ricans to Lorain to work in the company’s factory. The Puerto Rican Home’s founder Tomas Arias Jr. was instrumental in the recruiting process.

Hispanics make up 25 percent of the overall population of Lorain, according to

the 2010 census. Of that population, pro-bably 75 percent are Puerto Ricans.

The club honors the Puerto Rican cul-tural and background through socializing, workshops, music, Puerto Rican art acti-vities, food and dancing. Preserving that culture is important for future generations, said Rosie Garica, treasurer of the Puerto Rican Home, said the club tries to support many activities in the community.

“It is still a place where we meet and so-cialize,” she said. The club has pool teams,

dart teams and a dance group. “Our faci-lities are open to the community; we give them the home for free for fundraisers, benefit dances and benefit dinners.”

The Puerto Rican Home supplied more than 225 kids with school essentials ear-

lier this year and hosts community events, such as the Puerto Rican parade.

“We’re just trying to preserve and keep promoting our culture, especially for our youth.”

ricua Cultural De Lorain, is made up of children who practice Puerto Rican dan-ce.

Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a special day that has exis-ted for thousands of years with religious connota-

tions in Latin America, where it continues to be followed faithfully and is now celebrated in America.

The holiday holds a special place in the hearts of Mexicans, when family and friends gather to pray for and remember loved ones who have died, oftentimes with elaborate homemade altars. It is a more spiritual than solemn day, which begins on the eve of November 1 on All Saints’ Day and is celebrated on Novem-ber 2.

The special day bears little resem-blance to the other holiday it follows, Halloween, since it is not associated with evil spirits or scary situations and has nothing in common with the new enter-

tainment landscape filled with vampires, werewolves and zombies.

Dia de los Muertos is not, as is often said, the Latino Halloween. The day of celebration falls close to Halloween so a link is often made, but for marketers hoping to grasp insights into Dia de los Muertos, there is a delicate balance for the Spanish-language dominant Latino.

U.S. Hispanics enjoy Halloween, but they celebrate both holidays separately and in their own way, from generation to generation. Dia de los Muertos is a respectful yet colorful day filled with happiness and remembrance.

Some marketers have already tapped into the growing market by offering some of the items that are often needed to make an altar complete on Dia de los Muertos: Families set up altars at home brimming with fresh flowers, oftentimes sweet-smelling yellow marigolds, or cempasúchil, as the flowers are known

in Mexico; pan de muertos (bread for the dead) is often sold in Hispanic-friendly neighborhoods and is set out as a symbo-lic gesture for the person being remem-bered; a cup of water is left out for the person who has passed away to “drink” after a long journey, along with favorite foods; candles are placed nearby to light the way and to provide warmth; and decorative sugar skulls can be bought or made at home.

These rituals are in fact unique and can seem a bit unorthodox to non-Hispanics unaccustomed to discussing death so openly. Dia de los Muertos is often misunderstood because it may seem almost too festive. If it is, that’s because for many Latinos honoring the dead means being happy to have had that person in their life.

A growing number of pint-size ceramic skulls and skeletons found in storefront windows in predominately

Hispanic neighborhoods pay tribute to the holiday, but these figurines are often dressed in elegant attire and carry a musical instrument or are placed in jaunty positions. The calaveras (skulls) and skeletons commonly used to mark the day are more figurative, not spooky like the ones used during Halloween. To mark the occasion, skull-bearing T-shirts, cards, calendars and coffee mugs are beginning to be found in traditiona-lly less Hispanic neighborhoods which shows that the holiday has trickled into our “mainstream” culture.

Latin American culture is so vast and so multifaceted that honoring the dead should not come as a surprise. It is a different way of approaching life, even after a loved one has died. They are our love ones who pass away and they are always are a part of our live and we like to share that memory and that’s why it’s worth celebrating el Dia de los Muertos.

They say that the record number of 24 million Latinos are eligible to vote, but turnout rate has lagged that of whites, and blacks. They say that

only about 52% of Latinos registered vot-ers will turn out to vote this presidential election. Compare that to 73% in 2008.

The polls also say 17% of all Latino eli-gible voters live in this year’s battleground states—Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin. And among eli-gible voters in the battleground states, 8% are Hispanic. In some battleground states, there is a sizeable number of Hispanic eli-gible voters. For example, in Florida there are more than 2 million Hispanics who are eligible to vote, making up 15.9% of the state’s eligible voters.

Nonetheless the presence of Latinos in

this year’s battleground states has grown since 2008. The battleground states of Florida, Colorado and Nevada each have large Hispanic populations that have grown in size and share since 2008. In Florida, for example, the number of His-panics eligible to vote grew by 244,000 between 2008 and 2010. Their share also increased, rising to 15.9% from 14.5% in 2008.

In Virginia and North Carolina, Hispan-ics are also a larger presence among eli-gible voters in 2012 compared with 2008, though their shares remain small—3.7% and 2.9% respectively. In some other battlegrounds, the number of Hispanic eligible voters is below 2%. But that 2% can decide who wins because it’s going to be that close. For example, in Ohio, while there are 166,000 Hispanic eligible vot-ers, they make up just 1.9% of all eligible voters there. Ohio is expected to be closer than most polls say it’s going to be. And in

the case of New Hampshire, the size and share of the Hispanic electorate is even smaller—17,000 and 1.7%, respectively. The truth is that Hispanics can make the difference in these battle ground states.

Mitt Romney's campaign has set a pre-cise target for the share of the Hispanic vote it needs to win to defeat President Obama: 38 percent. Maria Cardona a sur-rogate for Obama stated, “This week, La-tino Decisions released a poll that gives Obama 70% of the Latino vote to Rom-ney’s 22%, the highest support the presi-dent has enjoyed from the Latino com-munity to date. If those numbers hold, it will be very hard for Romney to win the election.

This jump in support is a clear sign that the Obama campaign is doing a much more aggressive job of reminding Latino voters what this president has done to help Latino children and families get ahead.

of Latinos voted for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), whom Obama thumped while winning a number of key states where Hispanic voters are an important con-stituency, including Colorado, Florida, Nevada, New Mexico and Ohio.

Romney has to do better than McCain, and his advisers have set a goal that is just below the approximately 40 percent share of the Hispanic vote President George W. Bush won nationally and in Ohio in 2004.

"Our goal is not to do better than four years ago and the McCain campaign did — our goal is to hit 38 percent with the Hispanic vote," said Jose Fuentes, a co-chairman of Romney's Hispanic leader-ship team and former attorney general of Puerto Rico. "That's our goal. That's our national average."

Polls suggest Romney's magic number with Hispanics might be a tough mark to hit. Obama led Romney 67 to 23 percent with Latino voters in a poll conducted in late July poll by NBC News, The Wall Street Journal and Telemundo.

While Romney has softened his rheto-ric on illegal immigration since he ran hard to the right on the issue during the primary, and polls show Latino support for President Obama is soft, there have been no indications that Romney has made up any ground with the key voting bloc in recent months. That's a worrisome sign for a candidate who admitted at an April fundraising event that his campaign was “doomed” if he didn’t improve his

standing with Latino voters. It’s going to be hard for Latinos to forget the self deport comments Romney made in the primary.

Obama's executive order to halt de-portations on certain undocumented im-migrants brought to the United States at a young age also helped improve his standing with some Latino voters and undercut a push by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) to craft a GOP alternative ver-sion of the DREAM Act. Romney was

left holding the bag, struggling to explain whether he'd uphold the executive order. Now Romney is saying he wants a more permanent solution but has yet to explain what that would be.

Romney's party isn't helping him. The GOP platform committee added tough language to the official party position that says laws like Arizona's tough measure should be "encouraged, not attacked."

Romney has already surpassed Mc-Cain in terms of Hispanic outreach — bi-lingual phone banks run by his campaign and the Republican National Commit-tee have so far made more than 10 mil-lion voter contacts, according to a GOP source. But Obama’s campaign has also been heavily targeting Latino voters, and outspent Romney by a wide margin this summer on Spanish-language television and radio.

Romney himself has done few cam-paign stops with Latino voters outside of a June speech to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials and a few stops in Florida, where the Cuban-heavy Hispanic population leans Republican.

Top Latino Republicans featured dur-ing the Republican convention it, includ-ing Rubio, who introduced Romney at the convention, and the first lady of Puerto Rico, Luce Vela Fortuño (R), who intro-duced Ann Romney. Fuentes also prom-ised a much more persistent focus on La-



tino voters in these last few weeks.When you look at both party’s key La-

tino leaders like Democrat Julian Castro mayor of San Antonio Texas and Repub-lican Senator Marco Rubio of Miami you can hear the message.

Rubio and Castro seemed to be tell-ing versions of the same immigrant suc-cess story. The 41-year-old Rubio talked about his Cuban grandfather, a childhood polio victim, who sat on the porch smok-ing cigars and taught his grandson that he could achieve anything in America. Ru-bio praised his father, a banquet bartend-er, who “stood behind a bar in the back of the room all those years so that one day I could stand behind a podium, in the front of a room.” Castro spoke about his Mexican grandmother, who came to Tex-as as an orphan to live with relatives and worked as a maid, and his mother, who went to college and became a political ac-tivist. “My mother fought for civil rights so that instead of a mop, I could hold this microphone,” Castro said, bringing the house down in Charlotte.

Rubio said, Cubans wanted to get away from the lack of liberty in Cuba, and then depicted the growth of American govern-ment as steps in an oppressive direction like Cuba. He stated those kinds of “ideas that people come to America to get away

from.” In this vision of the Latino virtue, government needs to get out of the way, because “We should be free to go as far as our talents and our work can take us.”

Julian sees government by contrast, as an essential enabler of ethnic assimilation and success. With a beaming smile, he mocked Romney for advising college stu-dents to start their first business by bor-rowing money from their parents. “Gee, why didn't I think of that?” Without pub-lic investment in education, health care, job training, and transportation, Castro argued, struggling Americans will never have the opportunity to succeed.

The executive order by president Obama stops deportations of children of 15 years old in school and for college stu-dents was seen by some Latinos as a good first step. Republicans, by contrast, have defined themselves by their angry opposi-tion to any form of amnesty for undocu-mented residents, and support for Arizo-na’s stop-and-check-for-ID law aimed at deporting more illegal immigrants. Some Latinos are not happy that more Latinos have deported by this administration than compared to the last administration.

Now Romney seems to have been tone down his self deport ideas and states he wants a more permanent solution but as yet to give the details.

Both say they’re going to work hard to win over the Latino community. But the Latino community needs to show up strong in this election if they want their concerns and their agenda addressed.

Turnout is going to be key as to who wins this election, and the Latino com-munity can be the deciding factor in this election.

Republican strategists argue it is just as important for Romney to convince Democratic-leaning Hispanic voters to stay home as it is to convince them to vote for him. Right now polls show that only 52% of Latinos are committed to vote in this election compared to 73% that turned out in 2008.

The Latino population has continued to grow faster than most groups in the U.S. and one of the largest ethnic groups in this country, and more and more Lati-nos are registering every year. And some are saying the Latino vote could prove es-pecially crucial in Florida, Colorado and Nevada, and to a lesser extent in states with smaller but fast-growing Latino communities, like North Carolina, Vir-ginia and Ohio.

Now the question is will they show or will they sit on the sidelines? The time is now for the Latino community voice to be heard. The future is in our hands.

The results could be complicated on the statehood vote on No-vember 6. Hawaii and Alaska

navigated a lot of political roadblocks to become states in the 1950s, since each state brought a pair of senators and a House member to Congress.

The Constitution is vague about the whole process of how a territory becomes a state, delegating the task to Congress.

In Article IV, Section 3, Congress is given the power to decide what states and territories are, but state legislatures would have to approve any act that would com-bine two existing states or form a new sta-te from parts of other states.

And because any state automatically gets two U.S. senators and at least one member in the House of Representatives, statehood becomes even trickier if the ba-lance of power is close in Congress.

Alaska faced a decade-long battle with Congress to become the 49th state that ended in January 1959. Its voters had first passed a statehood referendum in 1946, but they lobbied for another decade with Congress to get their request for state-hood approved.

Hawaii helped and also complicated the approval process for Alaska, but a congressional compromise was brokered. After a vote in Hawaii and a separate act approving Hawaiian statehood, it became the 50th state on August 21, 1959.

And now, there is the issue of state-hood for Puerto Rico. The island is a

U.S. territory, and its residents are U.S. citizens, but they don’t have voting con-gressional representation. But what they do have resident commissioner who re-presents the Island of Puerto Rico, but he or she can’t vote.

So effectively, Puerto Rico residents can’t vote in the presidential general election. They can vote for their political party in the primary and vote at the con-vention as to whom will represent them.

Articles I and II of the Constitution says that only states can vote, and the 23rd Amendment extends voting rights to the District of Columbia.

Another statehood referendum will take place on Election Day, and the te-rritorial governor, Luis Fortuno, is sup-porting statehood as the best option for Puerto Rico.

Other statehood votes failed in Puerto Rico in 1967, 1993, and 1998.

The 2012 vote is different because it has two parts.

The first question asks voters if they want to move away from Puerto Rico’s territorial status.

The second part asks voters to choose three options other than remaining a terri-tory: becoming a U.S. state, an indepen-dent country, or a freely associated nation with legal ties to the United States.

To complicate matters, there are three major political parties in Puerto Rico, none of which align with the Democrats and Republicans–they are aligned to sta-

tehood, independence, and territory fac-tions.

In a May 2012 poll, the newspaper El Nuevo Dia found general confusion among potential voters.

About 51 percent didn’t want to move way from Puerto Rico’s territorial status and 45 percent didn’t fully understand all the ballot options. Only 36 percent sup-ported statehood.

On November 6, voter turnout will be high. Back in 2000, more than 80 percent of registered voters went to the polls. Puerto Rico residents vote at much higher rates than residents of the 50 states.

Back in 1998, voters in Puerto Rico were given four options: statehood, inde-pendence, a commonwealth, or none of the above. The majority picked “none of the above” as an option.

This time, if Puerto Rico wants voting representation in Congress, a majority will need to pick statehood as an option if Puerto Rico’s quest is to become a state then will head to Congress for their ap-proval.

The November referendum is a non-binding resolution, but it could also take Puerto Rico down an unexpected path that could have strong political ramifications.

Some say that a tough economic cli-mate in Puerto Rico is also a big factor in how the island will vote, and in one of the most interesting outcomes on Election Day.

Logitech esta presentando nuevos ratones y un touchpad diseñados para ser usados intuitivamente con Windows 8 y su nueva interfase grá-fica.

Los nuevos accesorios replican la experiencia de usar una pantalla sensible al tacto, al estilo que los usuarios están acostumbrados ya con las tabletas, dándole así acceso directo a los elementos de la nueva interfase implementada por Micro-soft. Los nuevos productos son el TouchPad T650, el Mouse T620 y el Mouse T400.

Con una superficie de cristal los accesorios soportan gestos con los dedos, además de acelerar la naveg-ación en Windows.

Los tres productos tienen un uso optimizado de sus baterías, el TouchPad T650 se recarga mediante el puerto USB y su carga dura un mes, cuenta con indicador de baja carga. En los ratones, la batería del T620 dura seis meses y en el T400 hasta 18 meses. Todos los productos tienen un switch de apagado para maximizar la vida de la carga.

Los 3 productos estarán dis-ponibles en Octubre y los precios sugeridos son de $79.99 dólares para el touchpad, $69.99 dólares para el T620 y $49.99 dólares para el T400.

Facebook ha llegado a una marca importante en su existencia, ha alcanzado finalmente 1,000,000,000 de usuarios en todo el mundo.

Sin duda este es un gran acontecimiento para el servicio que aunque no creo el concepto, si cambio sin duda la forma de operar de las redes sociales, y con ello la forma en que la gente se conecta vía no solo Internet sino mediante dispositivos móviles.

Para celebrar, Zuckerberg y compañía han lanzado el primer video publicitario, realizado ni mas ni menos que por el mexi-cano Alejandro González Iñarritu.

“Facebook honra a la gente a la que sirve”, expresó la compañía, “honramos las cosas que todos los dias nos acercan, sillas, perillas, aeroplanos, puentes, juegos, todas esas cosas que nos conectan....ahora Facebook es parte de esa tradición de cosas que nos conectan”, expresó la compañía en un comunicado.

El video esta planeado para usarse en 13 países: Brazil, Francia, Alemania, India, Indonesia, Italia, Japón, México, Filipinas, Rusia, España, Reino Unido y los Estados Unidos. Será traducido a 12 idiomas.

El día 18 de Noviembre estará dis-ponible en Estados Unidos la nuevo consola de Nintendo conocida como WiiU.

De entrada se venderá en dos presentaciones, el Set Básico que consiste de consola y control blanco llamado GamePad y que con 8 Gb de memoria interna es-tará en $299 dólares. Un paquete llamada Deluxe incluye lo mismo pero en negro además de 32 Gb de memoria interna, y el titulo Nintendo Land estará incluido, su precio será $349 dólares.

Ambas consolas son idénticas excepto en color, miden 10.5 pulgadas de fondo, 6.8 de ancho y 1.5 de alto. Pesan alrededor de kilo y medio.

Respecto de sus especificaciones, el WiiU contiene un procesador IBM Power7, gráficas de AMD Radeon, almace-namiento de 8 Gb o 32 Gb (dependiendo el modelo) tipo SSD, con ranura de expan-sión para tarjetas de memoria SD y acceso

para discos externos vía USB.En cuanto a conectividad, de la caja

cuenta con conectividad Wifi, también esta disponible un adaptador de Ethernet vía el USB. Otros puertos que incluye son 4 puertos USB 2.0, el de SD, multipuerto Audio/Video, HDMI y un sensor NFC.

La consola tiene un lector óptico de discos para discos de Wii, y de WiiU, cada disco de WiiU tiene capacidad para 25 Gb de información. No se mencionó que vaya a ser compatibles con DVDs y Blu-Rays.

Jamón cocido con glaseado de praliné y nueces

Quite el paquete, reserve el líquido. Coloque el jamón cortado hacia abajo en una hoja grande de papel de aluminio en una asadera y vierta el líquido reservado sobre el jamón. Envuelva

totalmente con el papel.

Caliente el jamón en el horno de 10 a 12 minutos por libra. No sobrecaliente.

Después de quitar el jamón del horno, déjelo reposar durante 5 minutos antes de colocar el glaseado.

Caliente el paquete del glaseado durante 15 segundos en horno microondas. El glaseado es un líquido caliente, por lo tanto,

tenga cuidado al abrir el paquete. Sostenga el paquete con un paño de cocina o guante para horno, corte la esquina del paquete y vierta el líquido del glaseado en un recipien-te. Ingredientes:• 2 tazas de papas, crudas y cortadas en rodajas • 1/4 taza de cebolla picada • 1/2 taza de pimiento rojo, cortado en cubos pequeños • 1 cucharada de cebollino, picado fino • 3 huevos, separados • Sal y pimienta a gusto • 3/4 taza de queso cheddar, rallado • 3/4 taza de queso Gouda ahumado, rallado • 1 taza de jamón Smithfield Spiral Ham, cocido y picado • 1 taza de leche evaporada • 1/2 cucharadita de pimentón dulce • 1/2 cucharadita de sal (opcional) • 1/4 cucharadita de pimienta

Preca-liente el horno a 375 °F. Rocíe la asadera del qui-che con aceite

antiadherente en aerosol para cocinar.

En un recipiente mediano, mezcle las papas, la cebolla, la pimienta, los cebollinos, un huevo batido, la sal y pimienta a gusto.

1. Mezcle 1 3/4 taza de caldo con el jugo de limón, la albahaca, el tomillo y

3. Retire la bolsita de menudos y el cuello de la cavidad del pavo. Enjuague

el pavo con agua fría y séquelo con papel de cocina dando ligeros golpecitos. Rellene el cuello y las cavidades ligeramente con una cuchara. Pliegue los sobrantes de piel sobre el relleno. Ate las patas por los extremos.

4. Coloque el pavo, con la pechuga hacia arriba, sobre una rejilla en una

asadera plana. Rocíe el pavo con aceite en aerosol. Pincele con la mezcla de caldo. In-serte el termómetro en la parte más gruesa de la carne del pavo sin tocar el hueso.

5. Ase a 325 °F de 3 1/2 a 4 horas o hasta que el termómetro alcance los

180 °F. Rocíe ocasionalmente con la mezcla de caldo. Controle el punto de cocción después de tres horas en el horno. Deje reposar 10 minutos antes de cortar.

Notas: —En una cacerola tapada, cocine el

relleno restante con el pavo por 30 minutos o hasta que el relleno esté caliente.

Es incoloro e inodoro, y además es la causa principal de envenena-miento accidental en los Estados Unidos. Y su acción letal aumenta

durante el invierno.El monóxido de carbono (CO), cono-

cido también como el “asesino silencio-so”, es responsable de un promedio de 450 muertes y 20,000 visitas a las salas de emergencia cada año, según la revista Journal of the American Medical Asso-ciation. Y como más de dos quintos de los casos de envenenamiento con CO ocurren

entre diciembre y febrero, los dueños de viviendas corren mayores riesgos en cuanto desciende la temperatura.

“Durante los meses de invierno, mu-chas familias recurren a fuentes de cale-facción que no usarían en otras etapas del año”, explica Deborah Hanson, directora de asuntos externos de First Alert, la mar-ca más confiable de productos de seguri-dad para el hogar. “Si bien esas fuentes pueden proporcionar calor con efectivi-dad, también implican grandes riesgos si no se usan adecuadamente. Para proteger a nuestros seres queridos de los peligros de envenenamiento con CO, es importan-

te que los dueños de viviendas tomen las precauciones adecuadas cuando manejen cualquier tipo de fuente de calor que fun-cione con combustible”.

Protección contra el envenenamiento con CO

Cada vez que encienda el fogón, ponga en marcha los dispositivos de ventilación o los extractores de la cocina. El fogón es una de las fuentes más frecuentes de en-venenamiento con CO en las casas. Para

Además, siga al pie de la letra las instruc-ciones de operación, y evite el uso dentro de la vivienda de asadores de carbón, fo-gones de campismo ni aparatos similares.

Inspeccione regularmente los equipos domésticos que consumen combustible. Coordine una inspección profesional de

todas las chimeneas y de esos equipos “hornos, fogones, secadoras de ropa, calefactores locales y generales”, anual-mente para detectar cualquier escape de CO.

También debe ser cuidadoso en el ga-raje. El calentamiento del motor del co-che en la mañana antes de ir al trabajo es común durante los meses de invierno,

pero hacerlo dentro de un garaje anexo a la casa, incluso con la puerta abierta, es peligroso, pues el CO puede penetrar en la vivienda.

Instale/verifique el funcionamiento de alarmas de CO. Las alarmas de monóxido de carbono son la única forma de detectar este gas peligroso en una vivienda. Para obtener una máxima protección, se de-ben instalar alarmas en cada nivel de la vivienda y cerca de cada dormitorio. Ve-rifique mensualmente el funcionamiento de las alarmas y cambie las baterías cada seis meses.

“Además, las alarmas se deben reem-plazar cada cinco a siete años para garan-tizar un funcionamiento óptimo”. Si no sabe en qué fecha se instaló, sustitúyala inmediatamente.
