I acknowledge the hard work of our teaching staff across all subjects whose primary goal was to encourage and support the students to set high expectations for themselves and achieve their very best. Overall students appear satisfied with their results. As is the case every year there are a number of students who either have achieved better than they anticipated or have not done as well as they had hoped. Support has been available to all students who have needed careers advice to move forward either by looking at their preferences for courses for 2018 or looking at alternative pathways. The Senior School Team and the Careers/ Workplace Co-ordinator have been on standby since last Friday. A number of students have also accessed University Counselling Support. We now move into the second stage of the waiting game, i.e. waiting for Tertiary offers to be made. First Round offers will be made on 16 January. Top Design Congratulations to Ben King (Year 12, Everard House) whose Technology - Wood Folio has been selected for the Top Design Exhibition 2018. This is an excellent acknowledgement of Ben’s talent and skill. I do also wish to acknowledge the support and guidance provided to Ben by his teacher, Phil Boyd. Congratulations also to Phil. Williamstown Open Water Congratulations to Ethan Hayes (Year 9, Everard House) who on Sunday 17 December completed a 10km open water swim at Williamstown. Symphonic Band Trip to Japanthe symphonic Band tour to Japan was a great success. our students represented us admirably and were a real pleasure to be with. the tour was well spaced between performances, workshops and free time. the cultural activities were very well received by our students and they engaged in these in a very respectful way.

of course the visit to the universal studios theme Park on the last day was an overwhelming success and the students were able to step away from their instruments, the packing and unpacking of the buses and truck and the musical notes in their heads and immerse themselves, even for just a short time, in the world of Harry Potter.

thursday 14 and Friday 15 were tense for our year 12 students as they awaited their results with anticipation and a few nerves. However, we managed to move through this in a very positive way.

through the workshops, rehearsals and performances our students gained a great deal in terms of both discipline and musicianship. they engaged with some fantastic high performing Japanese bands, musicians and Conductors and made friends with a number of Japanese students. i am certain that through social media they will keep in touch, at least for the near future.

i wish to acknowledge the hard work and organisation of Jane nicholson and congratulate Rick Plummer for taking this initiative forward. i also want to acknowledge the hard work and ongoing commitment of monty mcKenzie, ed Fairley and Vanessa George. i also acknowledge the contribution made by Dr John Lynch who conducted a number of performances and rehearsals at various times throughout the tour.

overall, it was a fantastic experience for all involved. every student said that at some point in time they would return to Japan.

Eltham High School 2017 Anthologyi would like parents to be aware that the 2017 Anthology was delivered to north of the yarra Booksellers on 24 november. As indicated earlier in the year there is an expectation that parents purchase the Anthology for their students since the significant number of A+ examples of work in the Anthology will be used in english classes next year as models for best practice. this is a fantastic resource and this small investment will not only provide additional support for your children to achieve at their very best but it will also be a great compilation of young people’s writings and art work that will engage your interest. north of the yarra are more than happy to help you with your purchase.

Junior ScHool Orientation Day

orientation Day for year 7 2018 occurred on 12 December and comprised of a range of carefully selected activities for the current grade 6 students. students engaged in tasks geared towards team-work, such as building a spaghetti and marshmallow tower, a dodgeball game, and school values-based tasks. the sausage sizzle and dodgeball games were highlights of the day, with many students expressing their excitement. A number of year 7 student helpers, along with year 9 and 10 peer mentors were also at hand to offer support throughout the day as needed. Junior school would like to thank the staff who conducted the activities along with volunteer students who ensured that the day progressed very smoothly. SEnior ScHool Dare to Dream - Entrepreneurs workshop

on monday 20 november, Bailey Johnson (Year 9, Stewart House), Seamus White (Year 9, Everard House), Keely Jones (Year 9, Stewart House) and Callum Davies (Year 10, Andrew House) went to La trobe university for a Business entrepreneurial workshop, run by Project Gen Z. we were fortunate enough to hear from two extremely passionate and successful entrepreneurs, as they shared their journey of achievements and challenges. Rebecca Rusinovic, who is currently completing her year 12 studies, was one presenter for the day, who formed her own business at the age of 13. Rebecca faced many challenges trying to establish her skincare business at such a young age, but certainly demonstrated perseverance and a determination to succeed. Rebecca now runs the profitable business of Bahama Belle skincare, managing her sales whilst simultaneously completing her VCe. Rebecca is an inspiration to us all!

the second half the day was an Apprentice Challenge! we were placed into random teams of around 15 students, all from different schools, and were challenged to re-market a Bahama Belle product. the activity was designed to put us out of our comfort zones and work as a team to accomplish a goal within a set time frame. All eltham High students did an exceptional job and went home with some prizes.

Callum Davies was the winning recipient of the most outstanding entrepreneur for the day. Callum was selected for this award due to his team work skills, leadership and for tackling every challenge with passion and enthusiasm. Callum’s prize is extremely substantial. From Project Gen Z, Callum received a 12 month subscription to all Dare to Dream workshops and camps around Australia as well as a 12 month Business mentorship Program, where he can choose a successful Business entrepreneur to be his mentor for 1 year. Congratulations to Callum!

we would like to thank ms Ames and mrs Celotti for organising this opportunity for us, and ms Ames for taking us to the workshop, as well as Project Gen Z who ran the event. we all encourage students to consider this opportunity next year.

Callum Davies (Year 10, Andrew House) , Keely Jones (Year 9, Stewart House), Seamus White (Year 9, Everard House)

and Bailey Johnson (Year 9, Stewart House)

it DEPartMEnt JB HiFi Purchase Portal for Laptopsthe JB HiFi purchase portal is now open for 2018.

students who are currently using the surface Pro 3 should strongly consider replacing their laptops – especially if batteries no longer last a school day.

in addition, from 2018 onwards surface Pro 3 laptops will no longer be under warranty, nor will they be insured. this means that the school will not be able assist with any hardware issues for this model.

if you are unsure about the viability of your existing laptop, our technical staff can provide advice and diagnostic testing.

Laptops purchased prior to 30 December will be ready for use on the first student day of 2018. the website is:

http://www.jbeducation.com.au/byod

and enter ‘ehs2018’ for the password.

the eltham High school Laptop Program is consistent with our priority of enabling students both individually, and with their peers, to use technology safely, insightfully, fluently and efficiently in order to connect, collaborate and create within and out of the classroom in line with 21st Century learning. with this approach we aim for our students to experience lifelong learning in a variety of digital environments and communities drawing on a range of adaptable and evolving technology skills.

should you have any queries please contact iCt/eLearning Leader Luke Herring at

[email protected].

Laptop Repairsif you see that your child’s computer is damaged, ask if they have a microsoft form to have it repaired. if not, ask them to follow up with the it technicians to begin the repair process. A damaged computer needs to be seen to as soon as possible.

it industry protocols will prevent any further repairs or maintenance being carried out on machines with damaged screens, so it is vital that damaged screens are repaired to prevent longer delays in computers being repaired. once the form has been returned the computer should be repaired and returned within a week.

Failure to act on computer damage as it arises could see insurance or warranties run out, leaving families with hefty repair bills.

Year 7 Science 20177H students ended their term 4 science experience with a bang, literally, by designing a cannon powered by methylated spirits. Jude Revill (Year 7, Everard House), Matthew Cook (Year 7, Andrew House) and nicholas Makridis (Year 7, Stewart House) created a Rube-Goldberg inspired cannon which was powered by the energy stored inside methylated spirits and using the principles of hydraulics. the display was very entertaining for all students to watch and certainly demonstrated a thorough understanding of scientific concepts. well done boys!

StuDEnt SErvicES operation new start is an eight week Program designed to engage secondary school students in a unique outdoor adventure and life skills Program. it allows students the opportunity to develop new skills and self confidence while accessing vocational links into tAFe and industry.

two eltham High school students, Bridget Arnet (Year 8, Everard House) and Kyle Fitzmaurice (Year 10, Stewart House) participated in the Program during term 4 and have now graduated.

“Hi! My name is Bridget Arnett and I go to Eltham High School.

Our first camp on the Program was the You Yangs camp where we did a 10km hike and a 10km mountain bike ride on the second day. Both of these activities required a lot of motivation from everyone. On our hike on the first day we had to carry big hiking packs with all our stuff in it for the night, including cooking equipment, tents and sleeping equipment. It was 5 hours of constant walking, complaining and breaks but we all motivated ourselves and each other to get through.

On the second day we went mountain bike riding and for me it was very stressful. I’m not the best bike rider and at the end I stacked it so we had to stop. The bike ride was a lot easier and I was able to do it because I knew I could take my time and because Jess was behind me, motivating me and letting me know I wouldn’t die.

When I go back to school I can motivate myself and other people to concentrate on school and to not make bad choices. What I learned, is when I motivate people it motivates me to do better too.

This Program has really helped me be a better person. When I first started I thought it was just a way out of school but it has really helped me physically and mentally and I feel a lot more confident and better about myself now. Thank you to Brendan and Jane for helping and supporting all of us and dealing with all our complaints.”
