President's ReportRick Wilderman

What a great start on the New Year. Mother nature smiled on us again by giving us perfect weather for the most successful Nokia Sugar Bowl Mardi Gras Marathon ever. I want to thank all of the volunteers for their help.As well as Paul Hoolahan, Jeff Hundley,Oliver Delery, Ronnie Kole, Jerry Romig,Richard Smith, Stephen Brinson, Russell Doussan, Wayne Pierce and all the many other Nokia Sugar Bowl representatives that took such an active part to make such a great marathon.

Now we look into 1997 with a full schedule of events that will accommodate all levels of runners and walkers who make up the membership of the New Orleans Track Club. However, now is the time for you, the membership, to consider the future leadership of the NOTC. Election of Officers and board of directors are going to take place in June. I must encourage each of your to take a proactive roll in your club. To do so, consider yourself or someone you know as a possible candidate for office. Your talents will be needed and appreciated.

Soon it will be spring, with fresh air, bright green grass and trees freshly budding, giving us all renewed inspiration to make that early morning or late evening run and enjoy our great surroundings. Because we all know, summer is just around the corner.

Rick

Executive Directors ReportChuck George

A new event on the club’s schedule for April 6th is the Hale Boggs Mississippi River Bridge Run 5K which will offer prize money to overall open, masters and race walkers and will award each age group winner with $100.00..!! Prize money aside, the Planet Hollywood’s Run the Planet has commemorative award: worth quite a sum.

Thanks especially to the dedicated volunteers at the long distance races. The NOTC is the only New Orleans area club that produces numerous long distance events, (only local Half- Marathon, 15K, 25K, 30K)

(Short of the Chalmette Track Club’s 10 miler—thanks CTC!!).

These races are very difficult to produce and require enormous logistical and personnel support. The financial benefits to the club are little if any from the event proceeds. Asa member of the NOTC......YOU make it possible to producethese events. If any of your friends participate in the club’s long distance races remind them to consider joining the NOTC and support the continuation of these type of events.

The NOTC is committed to producing a year round balanced schedule of races from the mile to the marathon. Your membership enables us to concentrate on the quality of events before the financial gains. Volunteer at least twice a year to make the clubs event better. Call 482-6682 today.

Our condolences to the family of A1 Flores. A1 passed away on January 20th. His ashes were scattered along his favorite running path.

Congratulations to Peter Gawda, he is the recipient of the Mayor’s Community Service Award for Military Personnel.

Congratulations to Alexander Thomas in winning the Mississippi Beach Sportscare Marathon (Nov 30-Pass Christian, Ms) in a time of 2:41:15. The Louisiana-NOTC participation was very noticeable in both the marathon and half-marathon.

Hey Carter Bise..what was your time?Hope you read the special flyer that we mailed out regarding the CRESCENT CITY

CLASSIC and the NOTC’s affiliation with this event. Please call the club at 482-6682 to offer your assistance and become part of making this truly a World Class Classic!!

Good weather has added to the race day participation this year. Hope to see you rain or shine!

1) You do not need a team, a referee or a partner - just shoes, motivation and the outdoors.

2) It is a cardiovascular exercise. Heart disease is the largest cause of death in America. Running is the most beneficial exercise for the least amount of time spent. The average recommendation is 20 minutes of exercise 5 times per week.

3) Almost everyone can participate. Becauserunning is an individual sport, all kids can train at their own pace.

4) It's a lifetime sport. A moderate program of running/walking can promote a healthy, fit body throughout a lifetime!

Editor’s Note: Running and walking as a family can have a positive impact on the development of your child's physical and emotional well-being. Remember, let your child develop at his or her own pace, with less emphasis on speed. Reinforce the positives of individual accomplishments and a healthy lifestyle.

CRESCENT CITY CLASSIC by Rich Smith

If you are considering walking the Crescent City Classic this year, and have not walked a 6.2 mile race before, consider dropping by K & B and pick up a copy of the Crescent City Classic Training Guide. It has some helpful training tips. The July ’95 Prevention Magazine article, The Best Way to Get Fit After 40, is a 10 page article about race walking, and contains some excellent descriptions of walking technique. I’ve found Prevention Magazine to be well written and helpful, and I will send you a copy of this article, if requested. Race walking requires a high level of coordination, and a clinic or class is the best way to learn, but there are video tapes available that can be very helpful. Maximum Walking by nationally recognized walker, Martin Rudow is available for $21.70; call (800) 925-5629. Elaine Ward, also nationally known has a race walking video, but I am uncertain of the price; call 1-818-577-2264. Dave McGovern, member of the National Team and a certified coach, and his friend Ian Whatley have produced a tape of race walking training drills, for $19.95; call at (503) 788-6303.

"IT'S NOT JUST A WALK IN THE PARK"By Rich Smith

Breathing short gasps of frigid air, I looked down at a cup of 10-K; a skim of ice floated on the surface, and I shivered. Chuck just smiled and said it was the coldest race he could remember since he was a NOTC member, and as I couldn’t feel my fingers, the rest of me believed him. I scooted back into the warmth of the food court. The ’96 Elmwood Classic made me think of a spoof of the Marines TV advertisement, “The proud, the few...the frostbitten.” In thinking back on this race, it seems like last years Grand Prix Series just finished, and now we are already kiro the., series. The ’96 series was terrific. There were new faces on the scene, competition was extremely keen with some categories being decided by a single race, and esprit de corps ruled. I am extremely proud of our walking community, and believe me, each of you is a winner.

Speaking of winners, we are lucky here in New Orleans. Our club attracts attention from walkers from afar, seeking a judged event; the latest enquiry I received was from an elite walker in Canada. This would not be possible without the dedication of experienced, certified race walk judges, to whom we owe a debt of gratitude. Demand for judges exceeds the supply, and our local judges receive requests from race directors in other towns and states. They have supported the race walk community with unpretentious efficiency. I would like to extend my sincere thanks and warmest regards to them all: Ms. Lisa Pitre, Ms. Ruby Chaney, Ms. Donna Boecher, Mr. Tom Marhevko, Ms. Nan McMasters, Mr. Julian Briones, Mr. Ted Dorsa, Mr. Don Lee, Ms. Vonda Osbourne, Ms. Karen Kloiber, Ms. Rhea Snyder, Mr. Clarence Williams, Ms. Bonnie McAfee, Mr. Oliver Dailey, Ms. Sharon Lewis, Mr. Adrian Bruley, Ms. Agnes Courtney, Mr. Don Borngesser, Mr. Cy Buchert, Dottie & John Clemmer, Ms. Betty Davis, and Mr. Ken Killian. Bravo!

The Landmark Hotel hosted a general membership meeting and the Grand Prix awards ceremony on February 13th. It was a hoot, as usual. If you didn’t attend, commit to your memory banks to attend next year. I understand the beer was cold, and the price certainly was right! To have your abilities and commitment to training and racing applauded by your peers is good. To see the obvious pleasure and excitement on the faces of some of the recipients is great, and it makes the Series great. Congratulations to you all, and thanks to Rick Lusky. You all have received the ’96 Walker Grand Prix rankings in the mail and know who won what, but I would like to tell you the rest of the story.

Mr. Elmer E. Wendel, a heart transplant survivor, has competed in over 100 races with his new ticker; he received a standing ovation and a special achievement award of a neat tyvek NOTC jacket. Ms. Barbara Turner’s knee injury kept her from competing during most of the series, but she was an active volunteer and has resumed walking. Ms. Ruby Chaney, a consistent winner when she raced, placed her commitment to judging before her own competitive spirit, which is strong. The Knox clan, Mike, Earlene and their son Stephen are role models for family competition. Earlene scooped the family, earning an award in her age category. The Competitive spirit burns brightly in Ms. Martha Tolbird (60+ age grdup, sbrry Martha) as she drove in from Buras for 13 races. At 84, Winter Trapolin, the prototype for gentlemanly competition, placed second in the 60 + group, and awarded trophies at the ceremony. I was really happy to see Clarence Williams receive his award; like Ruby, he could have placed higher, but sacrificed to give us his expertise as a race walk judge. Nationally in

1996, women were recognized as being more dedicated exercisers than men, and our young women, Ashley Hayes, Sara Beer,

Bridget Clement and Stephanie Mills represent us well. Isaac Knightshead appeared to have brought his own cheering section with him. I’m glad to be his friend, and part of the ruckus that started when his name was announced. There are more stories I can tell than I have space.

And speaking of stories, I talk to walkers before and after races and I have the pleasure of hearing the most incredible stories about a personal best or worst performance, or favorite race. I would like to share some of these with you in this column. Therefore, I am making a formal call for your stories about walking. Please submit your experience, limiting it to 500 words, in any legible format to: Rich Smith d o New Orleans Track Club, Post Office Box 52003, New Orleans, LA 70152-2003, no later than May 1st. The top three stories as judged by this most humble author will receive a soon to be coveted lSmittyi award; a somewhat tacky, suitable for framing certificate, and a spiral bound race walk log. With some editing, to protect the innocent, your stories will be a part of this year’s column. Now I’ve got the walking logs, so don’t let me down; I know the stories are out there.

As the new year begins it is appropriate to remind our Junior Division athletes that the International Race Walk rule changes as adopted by the USATF became effective as of January 1997. The leg shall be straight from time of impact until it passes directly under the body. As before, one leg shall remain in contact with the surface at all times. The word warning indicates a judge has given a red card for a rule infraction. Infractions from 3 judges will result in disqualification. These rules have been in effect for adults since January 1996. The USATF Junior Olympics will be held in Baton Rouge this year, and the events for race walkers will be July 24-27, 1997. Any judges that are considering becoming involved should contact our Souther Association Race Walk Representative, Ms. Donna Boecher at 737- 7409. Donna will get you a Competitive Official Application.

Drive and the finish back at Shelter-1.Leon’s plans were to start out and

continue running in about 5 mile legs then walking for 15 minutes and stretching as well as eating. As the day and miles lengthened this would turn into running for 30 minutes followed by 15 minute walking intervals as needed.

All in all the trio very seldom stopped for any length of time. A support crew provided coordination as the trio only stopped to eat and stretch or plenty of times to checkout the wildlife in the surrounding woods. It seemed like they

consumed an enormous amount of food and beverages. Runners providing support included Butch Buhler, Janice Buhler, Mary Dehon, Pat Sears, Mary Pisciotta, Martha George, Boatner Reily, Jeannie Blair, Amy Trosclair, Madelyn Bush, John Mire, Mike Meehan, Lucy Corbett. In all it took 33 hours and alot of courage, but they made it and no one since has. Good thing!!

HOLIDAY CLASSIC1 mile and 5K, Nov. 17,1996 Oakwood Mall, Gretna Race Director: Chuck George Race Chairman: Phil Tranchine

The NOTC 1996 Grand Prix Series final race had a fast field with both 5K winners setting new course records. Jesse Palmer and Pam Williams did so with times of 15:30 and 18:55. Pam’s time was also a new masters record.

Dave McGovern and Monetta Roberts led the racewalkers. The nationally ranked McGovern posted a raw time of 23:50.

The 4th Annual Holiday Classic is steadily proving to be one of the best races and drawing many participants back over to it’s westbank location each year. The creative t-shirt, awards including prize money, fast course and plenty of refreshments that included food courtesy of Semolina’s and the Outback Steakhouse kept the spirits and enthusiasm high as several dozen nice random prizes were given out.

The race benefits the Kiwanis Club’s Hearing aid program. The Kiwanis’ members led by Race Chairman Phil Tranchina did an outstanding job in providing the resources to make this event one of the best area races in a few years.

Don’t forget to checkout this race in 97, you’ll be back.

When there is an injury or discomfort, a good rule to follow for first aid is the mnemonic RICE:

R - Rest the injury.I - Ice the injury.C - Compress the injury.E - Elevate the injury above your heart.

Three Icin g Techniques Ice is the easiest tool to use in rehabilitation. It is inexpensive and very effective. The most widely used is the ice pack. To make an ice pack, put ice (crushed is great) in a plastic bag, push out all the air and fasten the bag.

If another bag is available, place the fastened one inside to help prevent leaking. Put a paper towel on the site of the injury or discomfort, and then place the ice pack over the paper towel. This will prevent freezer burn to the skin. If a regular towel is used, the ice pack will not get the skin cold enough to have the physiological effects occur. If the injury is in the neck, back, or shoulder, an ice pack can be put under a T-shirt or blouse. A person can then keep this on while working.

Ice packs are also convenient when resting.Ice packs can be used on legs or arms. There are many types of ice packs on the market. If purchasing one, make sure it will get sufficiently cold to achieve the four stages of icing. The second most used method is ice massage or ice cups. Place water into a styrofoam/paper cup and freeze it. Place a towel under the area with discomfort or pain to catch drips. Holding onto the cup, tear the edge around the cup, exposing the ice. Use a gentle, continuous, circular motion and rub the ice directly over the skin at the site of injury or discomfort. This is good for areas on the extremities such as knees, legs, ankles, arms, wrists, hands, and so on. Ice cups penetrate deep into the muscle fibers.Because this is an active motion, it can sometimes be more effective than an ice pack. The desired effect is to go through the four stages of ice, as stated above, before moving to another area, approximately 5-10 minutes. There are some reusable plastic ice cups on the market, for the environmentally minded; however, paper or styrofoam cups work fine.

The third method is the ice bath. Find a bucket or container large enough to immerse the area in need. Place a towel under the bucket and add ice. Try to isolate the body part that needs to be iced. Immerse your foot for 5 to 10 minutes (20 minutes maximum). Do not immerse your whole body in ice -doing so can cause shock and/or possibly a heart attack.

Ouch! Sharp pain stabs the inside of your heel (and sometimes the arch) when your foot hits the ground with the first few steps after awakening or prolonged sitting. This pain gradually improves with walking around. During your run, you might have pain initially, which then decreases. This pain might then recur at the end of a strenuous workout. You keep trying to run through it until any weight bearing activity becomes painful, and jumping and running are impossible. The plantar fasciitis monster has struck!

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of localized heel pain. In a study of 232 injured runners, 7% had plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a long band of fibrous tissue on the bottom of the foot that extends from the heel to the bases of the toes. It supports the joints, bones, and muscles under the foot during midstep and creates a rigid lever for push-off. It maintains the longitudinal arch of the foot.

So how do you prevent plantar fasciitis? Factors which can be controlled include training progression, environmental factors, shoes, and strength and flexibility exercises.

A useful guideline for a safe training progression is "the 10% rule." Limit increases in distance or intensity to 10% a week. For example, if a person is running 60 minutes at a session, 4 times a week, or 240 minutes, she or he can probably increase the running time to 264 minutes (240 + 10%), the following week if all else remains the same.

Terrain is also an important factor in training. Running 30 minutes on hills is very different from running 30 minutes on flat surfaces in terms of the forces on the legs and feet. Work up gradually to increase your running time on hills. Also lean forward when running downhill. If you run on a banked or crowned surface, vary the direction you run in so you alternate which leg is higher and which leg is lower on the bank. If you know concrete or asphalt is causing you discomfort, try running on a cinder or composite track. If you are going on vacation and are not used to running on sand or grass, don't spend your whole vacation doing it.

Good running shoes are vital to injury prevention. Shoe technology continues to improve and change rapidly. Buy your shoes from a reputable dealer who knows runners and his stock well. Your shoe dealer should be able to guide you in choosing proper shoes for flat feet or high-arched feet and your particular running style.

If you're a likely plantar fasciitis victim, stretching and flexibility exercises for the hamstring/buttocks and achilles/calf muscles are critical (see page 21 for a program).

There are three types of stretching: ballistic, slow, and dynamic. Ballistic (or bouncing) stretching occurs when you repeatedly do a quick stretch followed by a quick contraction. This can result in muscles tears and is no longer a recommended technique for stretching. Slow stretching involves going down to a point at which you feel tightness in the muscle and then push a little more and hold for 30-60 seconds. While a recommended method of stretching, it can result in thinning and weakening the tendon attached to the muscle.

However, dynamic stretching working and exercising the tightened muscle in the outer range of motion increases the range of motion by lowering the muscle's tension. You also increase the collagen tissue (which makes up the tendon and muscle) in that end range and increase the strength in that range.

The New Orleans Track Clubis an organization administered by runners and walkers to promote roadrace events both as a competitive sport and as one of the best athletic activities for achieving physical fitness.

The NOTC was founded in 1963 with the purpose of developing running in the New Orleans metropolitan area. Since that time the club has grown to over 2200 members including runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes. The NOTC is a member of the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), USA Track & Field Association and the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau, Inc.

A full schedule of running and walking events awaits you. From the Vi mile to the Marathon our schedule includes such well known events as the New Orleans Mardi Gras Marathon and the south’s oldest roadrace, the Jackson Day Race held since 1907. Events take place in a variety of locations that include Audubon Park, City Park, Lakefront, Westbank, French Quarter, Downtown, New Orleans East, Metairie, Flarahan and many other areas... even the Bonnet Carre Spillway! The NOTC New Orleans Grand Prix Series consists of designated races each year in which members compete for Grand Prix awards in divisions for Youth, Adult Open / Master / Grand Masters / Senior and RaceWalkers. A festive awards ceremony is staged to present awards to division leaders.

The NOTC is a non-profit organization. Officers and members of the Board of Directors are elected annually. Most of the work is performed by club volunteers. In this way we maintain nominal entry fees to cover costs at races.

All members receive a membership card and each full membership receives a copy of the club magazine FOOTPRINTS, the RRCA quarterly publication FOOTNOTES and regular mailings of club race forms, schedules and other notices.
