Presentaion AbstractPresentaion Abstract
As pitches become tighter (0.4mm and below) to enable increasing miniaturization, the correspond-ing PCB pads & stencil apertures (and therefore area ratios) get smaller. This makes it more difficult to transfer consistent solder paste deposits from the stencil to the board. Inconsistent/minimal paste vol-umes causes head-in-pillow defects as well as clumpy solder joints during reflow. These problems could get compounded with halogen-free systems. From a ma-terial standpoint, solder paste flux attributes such as oxidation barrier, tackiness & slump resistance help achieve good consistent print deposits and eliminate defects such as uncoalesced solder and head-in-pillow joints. As stencil apertures become smaller, a robust solder paste becomes all-important in eliminat-ing SMT defects and maximizing the manufacturing process window.

Hello Everyone,
Our February 26th, 2009 meeting was an excellent educational event with
over 40 attendees. The board would like to thank Matthew Holzmann, President of
Chirstopher Associates, for an outstanding presentation on “Process Control Through
Volumetric Automatic Optical Inspection”. We are all grateful that Matt agreed to
present on such a short notice, and for his continued support of our chapter. For those
of you who missed it we hope to have something posted on our archive web page in
the near future.
Our April 23rd, 2009 meeting will be presented by Karthik Vijayamadhavan
with Indium Corporation on “Maximizing Print & Reflow Process Windows for fine-
pitch assemblies - Solder Paste Attributes”. Thank you Karthik for your support of
the SMTA and our local chapter! To reserve your spot for this educational event
please go to http://www.laocsmta.org/reservation.php. We hope to see you there!
Our May 28th, 2009 meeting will be a Member Appreciation & 25th SMTA
Anniversary Celebration Night. We hope you can make it out for this very special
meeting.
For those of you who have not had a chance to make it to one of our meetings
we hope you will be able to do so in the near future. Any long standing SMTA mem-
ber will tell you that the biggest benefit of the SMTA membership is the networking
and one of the ways to work this benefit is attending meetings. Personally I have
gained many friends and clients through the SMTA and it is one of the reasons we are
successful and still in business today. The SMTA is here to support you and we
would love to be able to meet each of you in person. Let us help you make that mem-
bership work for you! Hope to see you soon!
Best Regards,
Kathy Palumbo

Our April 23rd, 2009 meeting will be at Marie Calendar’s in Anaheim. In order to use this location on a regular basis it will require a change to our meeting day (from 3rd to 4th Thursday of the month). Please feel free to e-mail any of our board members with your input on this and/or any recommendations that you may have.

We are now in the planning stages for our 10th annual 2009 LA/OC SMTA and IPC CCA Golf “Get To-gether”. It will be held at the same location as last year (Old Ranch Country Club) and is an event you don’t want to miss. The prices will be $250 for sponsorship, and player cost will be $145. The player cost has gone up $10 due to the country club raising their prices.
We all struggled on whether to hold the tournament this year considering the economy, but after a poll of past players and sponsors it was decided that we would have enough support for the event. Sponsorship benefits are listed at http://www.laocsmta.org/sponsors/index.html#SD , and event reservations can be made at http://www.laocsmta.org/Golf/golf.php.
This event funds our chapters’ operating costs for the year and has allowed us to donate funds to worth while causes such as the Charles Hutchins Educational Grant, Miller Children’s Hospital, and Make A Wish Foun-dation. Old Ranch Country club is a challenging golf course with impeccable greens that is not open to the general public. If you want a chance to play on a great course with some great company this is your opportunity. We hope you can make this event and if so early reservations allow us to plan better. Hope to see you at a future SMTA Event!

Ron Gonzales, LA/OC SMTA Chapter VP of MembershipRon Gonzales, LA/OC SMTA Chapter VP of Membership
LA/OC SMTA Member ProfileLA/OC SMTA Member Profile
My wife and I have been married for sixteen years. Elizabeth (Lisa) and my two sons,
Garrett age ten, and Alex age five along with our dog Buddy have lived in Yorba Linda for the
past twelve years.
Lisa operates her own business as a consultant to various companies throughout Los
Angeles, Orange, and Riverside counties certifying them to the ISO 9001:2000 and AS9100
quality standards.
Garrett is in the fourth grade and is very involved with JUSA soccer, Cub Scouts, and
the chess club. Alex is in pre-kindergarten and will be getting involved with JUSA soccer this
Fall. Garrett picked out our dog Buddy who is a Welsh Corgi/Pit mix from the Orange County
Animal shelter and he has turned out to be a fantastic dog for the family.
I myself am involved with Garrett’s soccer team and patrol with Cub Scouts. I also
serve with twenty other gentlemen at our church with a group called, “Men In Black” and we
work behind the scenes for the church and pastors.
When I’m not repairing or updating something for our home, I like to go bicycle riding,
fishing, swimming, bowling, or play football with friends. Last April, my wife and I got involved
with the American Lung Association, and ran up sixty-three flights of stairs at the Aeon build-
ing in Los Angeles. Lisa completed the challenge in eighteen minutes. It took me twenty-six
minutes and believe me, I was lucky it didn’t take me longer. Lisa is already training for this
year’s event, and I am thinking about it.
I have been involved with the family business for the past twenty-seven years at Revco
Products, Inc. a contract manufacturer in Garden Grove and hold the position of VP of Manu-
facturing. I have also been an active member of the SMTA since 2003. I really enjoyed being
a part of the LA/OC board last year as the VP of Technical Programs and look forward to this
year as the VP of Membership. One of the funnier moments was how I became elected to the
board. Kathy Palumbo nominated me last year and everyone else seemed to be in agreement
that it was okay for me to hold the position however; I hadn’t a clue what was going on and
ended up taking the position. I’m so glad that I did. The other six people on the board are
genuinely good people and extremely knowledgeable in their respective fields and it’s exciting
to see what I’ll learn next.
We hope you can come out to one of our future SMTA events and
have the opportunity to Meet Ron in person!!

SMTA Corporate Members - CALL FOR MENTORS!
Please share this information with your colleagues!
The SMTA & MentorNet One-on-One E-Mentoring Program is a chance to make a big difference in the life of a student in as little as 15 minutes a week.
SMTA seeks members to be mentors who are: Science and engineering professionals
In our related industries Active, on leave, or retired
To match with protégés who are: Pursuing a professional future in the fields of engineering and science
At the undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, or early career faculty (untenured) levels
Although mentors volunteer their time to benefit the protégé, they can also find a rewarding experience for themselves. “I hope [my student] is getting as much out of it as I am,” is how one MentorNet mentor de-
scribes the experience. More than 70% of mentors have recommended MentorNet's e-mentoring program to a friend or colleague!
Mentoring relationships last 8 months. Because mentors and students communicate entirely by email, they can choose a schedule that is convenient for both. In fact, 90% of our mentors feel that
How can you volunteer to be a mentor? It’s e-a-s-y! 1) Join the MentorNet Community at http://www.mentornet.net/join
2) Follow the One-on-One Mentoring Programs links to create a mentor profile. Be sure to indicate SMTA membership in your profile!
Since 1997, MentorNet has matched more than 22,500 pairs of protégés and mentors with exceptional re-
