Happ ine s s , Growth and Exce l l ence for A l l
At Langley Primary School our vision has children’s and our staff’s
happiness and fulfilment at its heart.
In our school we provide a caring and inclusive environment which aims to
provide children with the foundations for a satisfying and productive life. Our
school is a place of calm, safety and learning and we value our approachable and
welcoming ethos. We work in partnership with our community to ensure children
and staff feel happy, safe and valued.
H a p p i n e s s
We believe in the right of everyone to grow and develop without
limits and barriers.
We work as partners in our community, growing a trusting and positive
relationship with families and services to create the most favourable environment
for our children’s growth. We want all of our children to thrive and grow so we
prioritise support to tackle barriers to growth and to equip children with the
resilience and character to face and overcome difficulties themselves. We make
every effort to ensure our children get the opportunities they deserve and, by
investing in people, we work together towards our community’s goals.
E x c e l l e n c e
We want all our children to achieve highly across the full range of
learning and development.
We have high expectations of children’s progress and accomplishment. We
adopt a positive attitude, and challenge ourselves constantly to find a way to
overcome barriers to learning. We believe in possibilities and the capacity of
everyone to flourish and succeed.
Langley inspires, supports and encourages everyone to give their best to develop, grow and achieve in a supportive family environment.
‘We aim to be a school that our community can be proud of.’

Tru s t
Our school values are very important to us. They guide our work as a school
and underpin everything that we do. We share our values regularly within our school
and we encourage both children and adults to follow their principles in their learning
and relationships.
Being able to believe in each other
We value belief in the reliability, truth and ability of each other. We strive to
earn and offer trust so that our community develops the stability and certainty that
trust brings.
Doing the right thing because it is right
We value the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.
Integrity means doing the right thing in a reliable way. We value integrity as it
indicates a strong moral direction that doesn't waver.
Working together towards shared goals
We value openness which is characterised by an emphasis on transparency and
free, unrestricted access to knowledge and information. This enables collaborative
decision-making and acceptance of difference and change.
Accepting and acting upon our duty
In a flourishing and effective community everyone contributes and understands
the way that they can make a difference, accepts their duty and carries it out to the
best of their ability.
Making things happen
We value the idea of developing solutions rather than relying on others for
answers, helping others before they begin to struggle and challenging ourselves to
improve rather than waiting for support.
Treating others well and considering them our equal
We value diversity and recognise and respect difference in people. We are
tolerant and respectful of others and believe that everyone should be treated with
equal value.

Your child’s safety and well-being are of paramount importance to us at Langley Primary
School and we have a range of systems and procedures in place to ensure that we do everything
we can to protect and support them in these areas.
Your child’s class teacher is the key individual who will be with your child every day to care
for them and support them. Your class teacher will get to know your child well and will be able to
work with you to resolve any issues and to meet your child’s needs.
Other staff will work alongside pupils throughout the day. For example, lunchtime
supervisors, the Deputy Headteacher and the Headteacher will share the responsibility for the
safety, security and welfare of pupils during the lunch break.
The Headteacher has overall responsibility for Child Protection and is the Designated
Safeguarding Lead. Other members of the safeguarding team are Ms S McCutcheon (Deputy
Headteacher) and Mrs S Brown (Inclusion Manager). Parents should be aware that all those who
work with children have a duty of care for child protection and welfare and a duty to report any
causes for concern to the relevant agencies for support and/or further investigation.
In the first instance parents need to contact and work with their child’s class teacher in all
pastoral and care issues. If further support is required, then the phase leader can be involved with
other senior staff where this is necessary.
Child and Family Mentor
Our Child and Family Mentor, Mrs Burgess is a valuable member of our welfare team. She
supports families in our school community in a variety of ways including:
· Accessing Community Resources
· Understanding your Child
· School Attendance
· Financial Signposting
· Returning to Work
· Clubs and Activities for your Children
· Child Care
Mrs Burgess can be contacted via the school office for an appointment – sometimes just coming in
for a chat is all that’s needed.

The safety and well-being of all our children is our most important responsibility.
Langley Primary School takes its responsibility for the care, well-being and safety of all its pupils
very seriously. To this end, staff will be alert to signs of non-accidental injury and/or unexplained
changes in behaviour. Such signs will be referred to the Headteacher, who may then, discuss the
situation with parent(s). If necessary, the Headteacher will refer the situation to the Duty team within
the local authorities Social Services department.
We warmly welcome pupils, parents and other visitors. However, our employees have the right
be treated with dignity and respect, and to work in an environment that is free from any form of
discrimination, abuse, bullying or harassment. This helps to promote the best possible learning
environment for the children at the school.
Langley Primary School does not tolerate discrimination, bullying, abuse or harassment of any
kind, towards any employee at the school by any visitors, parents, employees or other third parties.
Any allegations of discrimination, bullying or harassment will be investigated and appropriate action
taken.
Thank you for respecting our school environment.
Professionalism and confidentiality will be maintained at all times.
At Langley we expect all our pupils to understand that a high standard of discipline, particularly
self – discipline, is evident at all times, so that the learning environment is happy, secure and
stimulating.
Children are expected to care for each other, be orderly, polite and considerate. They are
expected to contribute to an ethos and atmosphere which supports all aspects of learning. Our aim of
working towards independence, self – reliance and confidence for all pupils, demands that our pupils
are involved and committed to learning at Langley. All pupils are expected to take a pride in the
school and to play their part in providing the best possible education. Parents are asked to support us
in these aspirations and expectations.
Key to children’s success is our ability to work closely in partnership with all our families. These
relationships enable us to support the children in our care and achieve the best possible outcomes.
We reward good behaviour and positive attitude and have a set of age appropriate consequences for
trickier times!

A late start to a session is not a good start for your child. Please be on time for school.
It is important that your child arrives at school on time for every session. Lateness can be very
upsetting for any child, but especially so for those who are very young. It also has an impact on the
rest of the class as late arrivals cause disruption to the beginning of everyone else’s day.
Children arriving after registration time should be taken to the school office where they will
be signed in as late. If your child attends Nursery, Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, a member of staff will
accompany your child to class.
It is also important that you collect your child on time at the end of the session.
All lateness is recorded and regular lateness will be investigated and discussed with parents.
School policy is that no one under the age of fourteen is to collect a child, except under
exceptional circumstances and this will need to be agreed with the Headteacher.
If you prefer to be the only adult to collect your child from school, we need to know.
We must also be informed if this arrangement changes.

Absences
At Langley Primary School, attendance is regarded as highly important and we take our
statutory duties in this regard very seriously. Regular attendance is important if your child is to
benefit from all the learning opportunities we offer at Langley, even before they reach their fifth
birthday (statutory school age).
Good habits need to be developed early!
Our whole school attendance target is 96%. Research has shown that poor attendance
adversely affects the learning and social and emotional development of all children. Attendance
below 95% will be investigated and parents contacted. Poor attendance will initiate the involvement
of the school’s Education Welfare Officer and family support team who may visit parents at home
when our monitoring system for absence raises concerns. Parents will be invited to ‘Pre-Legal
Meetings’ to discuss their child’s attendance.
Persistent Absence
Attendance of 90% or below is classed as ‘Persistent Absence’ and as such is treated in a
different way to ‘normal’ absence. When absence falls into the Persistent Absence category, school
may choose to only authorise further absences that are supported by ‘medical evidence’. Where
attendance falls below 90% parents will be asked to provide evidence for future absences.
Unauthorised absences are referred to Solihull MBC enforcement team. This may result in a Penalty
Notice being served with a fine of up to £120 payable for failure to comply with the law.
Types of Medical evidence we can use to authorise absences.
1. GP/Dental appointment card with date of appointment attended.
2. Medical appointment letter.
3. Empty prescribed medication packet with dispensing label attached.
4. Copy of prescription.
5. White return page of prescription (repeat prescription request)
6. Medical letter from GP or medical professional advising child is unfit to attend school.
7. Medical certificate
8. Compliment slip from a Nurse at the child’s medical practice confirming they are unfit to attend
school. We aim to be reasonable in our approach to absence and so will always discuss issues with
parents and work with them for the benefit of the child. Furthermore, we do not expect parents to
make unnecessary doctor’s appointments to obtain evidence. However, we have a duty to follow up
and question low attendance as this can have an enormous impact on children’s life chances. If your
child has an underlying condition or if there are particular reasons for low attendance please come in
and discuss this with us.

Absence Procedure
All absences from school must be explained by an appointment card/letter in advance or a
telephone call or email on the FIRST DAY OF ABSENCE.
If your child has a forthcoming known absence, eg hospital/dental/doctor’s appointment, please
let us know in advance by showing the office the appointment card/letter. All pupils must be
collected from the school office and be signed out via the InVentry system before leaving the site.
When your child is ill, please inform school by telephone/email by 9.30am on the
first day of the absence. Keep us informed if the absence goes beyond three days or
over a weekend. If we are not informed of the reason for absence a phone call will be
made to all emergency contacts to ascertain the reason for absence.
Government guidance, relating to holidays in term time, states that leave shall not be granted
by the school unless the request is made in writing, in advance, and the Headteacher deems there to
be truly exceptional circumstances. Unauthorised absences will be referred to Solihull Council and
may result in a Penalty Notice being issued to each parent. The Penalty Notice is a fine of up to £120
for failure to comply with the law on school attendance.
Absence Concerns
Where we become concerned about absence, we will contact parents to discuss it with them
and seek an improvement. In some cases we may ask for medical or other supporting evidence
before authorising absence. Our Education Welfare Officer will also visit parents at home when our
monitoring system for absence raises concerns. Cumulative unauthorised absence could trigger a
penalty notice and fine.
All absence (whether authorised or unauthorised) will appear in our published data, pupil
reports and will be forwarded to the Local Authority (LA) and the DfE.
Our on-going target is to increase the attendance of EVERY CHILD in school to more than
90% and to improve punctuality in all classes. We monitor this situation very closely. Any child
losing more than 10% of the school year through absence actually misses at least 19 school days
which equates to a school ‘month’.

Contact Information
In the case of accident or illness it is vital that we have information on file which will enable
us to contact you directly or via an agreed contact person during the school day. For this reason
we ask you to complete our Pupil Information Sheet, this must be accompanied by your child’s
birth certificate before they can be admitted into school.
Your child will not be able to start school unless all sections of the Pupil Information Sheet
have been completed. Such a system ensures we can support your child in an emergency, helping
them to feel safe and secure. Any change of address, telephone number, email address, home
circumstances or contact arrangements must be reported to the school office immediately.
Medicines in School
We have a policy for the administration of medicines in our school which is available upon
request. This policy seeks to support, as far as is practical, any child that has a medical or health
condition to ensure their health, safety, welfare and inclusion in school life. Any discrimination and/
or bullying linked to medical or a health condition will not be tolerated at Langley Primary School.
We acknowledge that chronic illnesses and disabilities can impact on children and their family
in varying degrees; through attendance, behaviour and educational attainment. We aim to create a
supportive environment and recognise that a child living with, or affected by, a chronic illness has
the right to access education and receive support for themselves and their families.
The policy supports the inclusion of all pupils who require medication whether short term
or for chronic illness. We address all health and medical needs with sensitivity and respect and
work in partnership with families and, if necessary, health professionals.
Langley Primary acknowledges that if a family discloses any information about illness or
disability affecting a child or members of his/her family, any sharing of that information will be done
on a need to know basis and only with the consent of the pupil/parent, unless there is a child
protection issue.
It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that when medication is kept in school, it is kept in
date, and that when the medication is no longer needed or is out of date, it must be collected and
disposed of by the parent
OUR SCHOOL POLICY STATES WE ARE UNABLE TO ADMINISTER MEDICATION TO
ANY CHILD THAT HAS NOT BEEN PRESCRIBED FOR THEM BY A DOCTOR.

Children should not return to school until they have completed a 5 day
course of antibiotics and must feel well enough to do so.
MUMPS 5 days after onset of swelling
CHICKEN POX 5 days from onset of spots, or until all spots have crusted over
IMPETIGO
Unless the sores can be reliably covered with a waterproof dressing, the
child should stay at home until the sores have crusted or healed. This
will usually be at least 48 hours after the start of treatment.
DIARRHOEA AND
SICKNESS
Child to be kept at home for a minimum of 48 hours after the last bout
of illness. Child has to be 14 days clear before they can go swimming
HEAD LICE
Can be treated and child returned to school. Please inform school if
your child has head lice. A standard head lice letter will be sent to class
to advise parents to check their own child’s head.
The above are guidelines and you should be advised by your GP.
Children starting school are particularly susceptible to a range of infections – please do not be too
concerned if your child contracts head lice, worms etc. If treated properly, and if the correct action
is taken, then these incidents will be minimal.

Exclusion period for common communicable diseases
Children need to be kept at home for these periods when illness is diagnosed:
15
Choose water as a drink
Encourage your child to have whole fruit to eat, rather than fruit juices that have a lot of sugar.
We recommend that parents send children in with a water bottle, especially during warm weather.
This can be refilled at school allowing children to remain hydrated.
Eat more fruit and vegetables
We are a ‘Healthy School’ and strongly encourage healthy lunches and snacks where these are
sent in from home. Healthy snacks help you to meet your child’s daily nutritional needs, help children
to remain active and alert and help them develop good habits.
Allergy Information
Nuts and peanuts can cause allergic reactions, which are sometimes severe. A severe reaction
to nuts is called anaphylaxis and can be life threatening. Symptoms often start quickly, within an hour
of coming into contact with a nut and sometimes within minutes.
We have children with nut allergies in school. Most people with nut allergy react after contact
with small amounts (less than one nut) and some people may react to trace amounts. Therefore, we
ask parents not to let their children bring in anything containing nuts. Please check the
ingredients of your children’s snacks and lunches to ensure they don’t contain nuts. Nutella
chocolate spread does contain nuts for example

School Lunches
We work with Solihull Catering Services, who have the Silver Food for Life Partnership
Catering Mark. This mark is a symbol of trust across public and private sector catering. Our menus
fully comply with food standards on nutrition and portion size. They use fresh ingredients, which are
free from additives and GM and better for animal welfare. We chose them as they source meat and
poultry products from the surrounding counties. All meat and poultry fulfil the Red Tractor Assured
Food Standards’ criteria. Eggs used in school are free range from Shropshire. All fish products on our
menus meet Marine Stewardship Council standards. The minced beef used in our dishes is UK Farm
Assured or Organic, yoghurts used are organic and from the UK. Cold choices are available along
with the traditional hot meals and puddings. We have a baguette and salad bar which are both very
popular. Additional fresh fruit is also provided as a dessert alternative.
Our School meals are planned on a three week cycle and always contain meat, fish and a
vegetarian option. None of our food contains nuts or nut derivatives, or prawns in case of the
possibility of a severe allergenic reaction. The school meals menus can be found on

Online Payments
In conjunction with Solihull MBC and ParentPay, we are pleased to say that we are a cashless
school. We can accept payments online or at a PayPoint location for school meals, trips and other
items.
ParentPay offers you the freedom to make these payments whenever and wherever you like,
24 hours a day, 7 days a week – safe in the knowledge that the technology used is of the highest
internet security available. Dinner money should be added to ParentPay in advance to ensure your
child’s account remains in credit.
Tuck is available for year 3, 4, 5 & 6 pupils. Tuck will change daily and will either be a piece of
toast or a crumpet for 25p, a toasted teacake or piece of fruit for 30p
Educational Visits
These are planned as part of the school’s curriculum to suit the ages, aptitude and abilities of
the children taking part. Through these visits we aim to broaden the children’s experience with
activities that develop their enthusiasm and enjoyment for learning.
Charging Policy
We cannot make a charge for curriculum based visits, but to enable these visits to continue
we will request a voluntary contribution to cover the base cost. Without these contributions, trips
would cease to exist and Langley children would be the poorer in educational experiences.
Educational visits bring to life a subject that is being taught in the classroom.
School fund
This initiative seeks to support school and families in providing the very best materials for
process led aspects of the curriculum. A single contribution of £10.00 per child per year (2020–
2021) will help school with the provision of materials, ingredients etc for subjects such as
technology, (including cooking), science and art. These areas of learning, place a great emphasis
on developing skills for pupils without necessarily providing an end product. With your support we
can buy a wide range of materials to support learning, and give all pupils equal access and
opportunity to develop skills and reach their potential in all practical subjects.
Keeping in touch
Please sign up to ParentPay to ensure you receive all communication. ParentPay log in details
will be sent to you once your child has started school. On occasions a printed communication
may be sent home with your child with relevant information. However, please endeavour not to
lose these letters, as it causes extra work and expense to school.

curriculum and work very closely together. The arrangement enables us to offer a wide range of
options and flexibility in order to fit in with our families’ different circumstances and requirements.
There are 3 options available:
Option 1 – Starbursts (set hours / set days / term time only)
Monday – Friday 15 hours: 8.50am – 11.50am

School baseball caps and bucket hats are ideal for summer protection against the effects of the
sun.
If a hijab needs to be worn, this should be plain royal blue or black.
Leggings under skirts and dresses should not be worn. If legs need to be covered, grey
trousers may be worn.
Children must be appropriately dressed at all times.
No nail polish or make up is to be worn by pupils.
We prefer children not to wear earrings during the school day. However, if they do, they
should be removed on Health and Safety grounds when swimming, PE and/or Games are taught
and are left at home on these occasions. If earrings are worn and have to be removed, this can
only be done by the child, as staff are not allowed to remove children’s earrings. School cannot
take responsibility if they are lost or damaged.
No extremes of hairstyles are allowed. If you are unsure of a style, please ask before cutting.
Long hair must be tied up or back from the face. Hair ornaments must be black or blue, and
yellow in the summer months if worn with a summer dress.

Smart Watches
Concerns have recently been raised about pupils wearing smart watches in school. The
functionality of smart watches varies considerably: from being a fully functioning smart phone (able
to make phone calls, send texts, take photos, make videos and record conversations) to being
solely a health monitor (recording the wearer’s vital signs and activity).
Although possible, it is difficult, and time consuming, to distinguish between devices to
understand the functionality of each device. We believe the most significant safeguarding risk is
from pupils having the ability to record themselves, other pupils and staff, which could even be
done covertly.
Some smart watches – even those that just monitor health – are expensive. We believe
there is a strong likelihood that school staff would become embroiled in time-consuming incidents
should pupils lose or damage smart watches during the school day.
Secondary schools, generally, have already had to address this issue and most secondary
schools ban pupils from wearing all smart watches during the school day.
Following advice from the local authority we believe that the safest and most effective
response for everyone is to apply the same principles to smart watches as we do to mobile
phones.
For the purposes of this policy a ‘smart watch’ is any device that has some or all of the
following functionality.
Making or receiving calls
Sending or receiving messages
Connection to the internet
Audio playing or recording
Video playing or recording
For the time being we are not classing health monitors such as ‘Fitbits’ as smart phones providing
they have none of the above functionality.
We are asking for parent’s co-operation in applying the policy that smart watches are
not worn to school.
Other Watches
Watches, including smart watches, have the potential to become part of a wider issue that
can adversely affect both children and their parents.
One of the reasons that school uniform works so well to support children’s well-being is
that it avoids children having to ‘compete’ with regard to clothing. Watches can also potentially
put pressure on children and families along with ‘Smiggle’ paraphernalia and other possessions.
They can also distract children from learning and of course be lost or damaged. We don’t want to
prevent children from expressing their individuality but would ask that parents bear these issues in
mind when sending children in to school with these possessions.
Watches can be worn but should be of a reasonable size so they can be worn under
clothing and must be removed for PE.

As the primary educators of your children we value your support, understanding and
partnership in providing pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding which will help them
make sense of the world around them and equip them for all its challenges.
We set great store by this partnership and do all in our power to develop your trust,
commitment and loyalty, as in return we expect you to support our aims and values.
We all have a duty to promote the image of our school in the Olton community. It is
essential that parents recognise the rights and choices made by local residents. Parents are asked
not to park across driveways and to ensure that their child/children respect their environment,
especially when coming to and leaving school.
Children are not allowed to remain on the school site after 3.30pm, unless they are using
First Choice Langley child care provision or participating in extra curricular activities.
The school office is open during term time only
Monday to Friday - 8.30am to 4.00pm

Our school site is very busy and potentially dangerous at the beginning and end of the school
day. As adults, we are powerful role models for our children and, as a school, we respectfully urge all
parents to act upon the following advice:
Please ……
parents are responsible for the supervision of their children until they are handed over to
school staff. Children should not be dropped off on areas of the site and left to walk
unsupervised into class.
park in Olton Friary car park or Langley Hall Social club when dropping and collecting children
use the access way, on foot, opposite Monastery Drive
use the driveway, on foot, entering through the gate onto the FS1 and FS2 playground
use the gateway leading onto the KS1 playground
do not obstruct residents’ access to their property by parking across private driveways
do not park on the pavement or at the bus stop - both actions are illegal
in the interests of health and safety, please do not bring dogs onto the school site.
do not park on the school house driveway
Parents are not allowed to park on site.
Children must walk down the school drive keeping to the footpath, crossing the drive with great care.
Parents Visiting/Helping in School
When visiting school during the school day, please report to the School Office and switch off
your mobile phone. For the safety of all children, visitors need to sign in, acquaint themselves with
the school safeguarding and fire procedures and wear the appropriate identity badge. All parents
must have the necessary clearance checks done before working with pupils.

Pupil Voice
At Langley Primary School we are proud to say that we have a School Council, a PE Council and
an ECO Committee and we regularly have discussions with children to find out how they feel about
matters that affect them. In this way our children have the chance contribute with ideas and
suggestions on how they would like to see improvements made to our school and community.
Parents’ and Teachers’ Association (PTA)
This is an association of parents, staff and friends who help support the work of the school by
organising different fund – raising activities which raises money to purchase different kinds of
equipment, and opportunities to give that little extra to the children and school.
Here is an example of some of the purchases the PTA have donated to us in recent years:
Trim track
Artificial grass
Outside play equipment that can be used all year round whatever the weather!!
An outside classroom
Lunchtime games for all year groups
All parents are automatically members whilst your child is at Langley Primary School. We are
always looking for new members to join; more importantly, we are always looking for new ideas or
any help anyone can give, even for an hour or two, however small. Everyone is welcome.
The more help we have, the more successful the events will be.
Parents can contact the PTA directly on their email address [email protected] or
via the School Office for further information about all their activities and meetings.

We are fortunate as a school to have the use of Olton Friary car park. Parents have permission
to park at The Friary for morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up only eg., up until 9am and between
3pm – 3.45pm. For any special occasions / assemblies where parents are invited into school during the
school day, there is no parking at The Friary or on school site. Please find alternative parking where it
is safe and legal to do so and please be courteous to local residents.
Park and Stride
We also have the use of the car parking facilities at Langley Hall Social Club. The club is
situated at the rear of 40 Langley Hall Road B92 7HL.
As you enter the car park there is a pathway leading onto Langley Hall Park where you will be able to
join the path leading to school. This route enables the children to have a safe and enjoyable walk to
and from school as you will not be near any traffic.
Please keep children under close supervision whilst using the car park as members of the club
may be using the premises at the same time as yourselves.

Absence from school
It is a parent’s/carer’s responsibility to contact school on the first
day of a child’s absence before 9.30am.
All absences from school must be explained by a telephone call to
the school office 0121 706 3932, (a message can be left on the absence
line) or an email to [email protected] .This needs
to be done in advance or by 9.30am on the first morning of
absence. This applies to all absences eg., illness, medical appointments,
religious observance etc. Failure to contact school will result in a
phone call to the first emergency contact. If the first emergency
contact can not be reached, a phone call will be made to all other
contacts that we have on the system. If after this, we still have no
reason for absence, the Head teacher and/or Education Welfare
Officer will be advised and they may decide to do a home visit.
This may seem excessive but from a school’s point of view, a child
absent from school with no reason for absence is a missing child. A
missing child is a safeguarding concern.
Also if you are running late and anticipate that you will not be in
school by 9.30am, please contact the school office.
