During this time, I have watched, listened and learned about the culture and rich history of our school. Frequently I am asked “How is your school different?” or “Why is LFE a choice program?” and those questions take more than just a phrase or two answer. Often the answer is not in the What but in the Who and the Why. Fostering skills to develop high-achieving 21st century learners is the goal of any educational system. As a staff we have worked on clarifying why we are different and why we are a choice program. With the input of staff and PAC members we have continued to add and refine our thoughts and reasons that make us a special place to be. On many occasions, visitors to our school will comment that it is different here and it would be a place that they put their children too. I think that is the highest compliment. We can’t just leave it at that though; having goals and continuing to advance our children socially, emotionally, and educationally must always be the focus of our attention. It also needs to be purposeful and intentional. We have tried to capture this in 3 pillars of our Fundamental System: Pillar #1: Family, Community and Traditions: At LFES we encourage and welcome parent involvement and work closely with families to support all of our students. LFES students and staff are proud Canadians citizens committed to community outreach, both locally and globally. With a rich history and strong traditions, LFES values where we came from while looking forward to an exciting future of learning for our students. Pillar #2: Excellence in Education: Langley Fundamental Elementary strives to provide excellent instruction with a strong emphasis on mathematics, reading and writing while incorporating technology, fostering collaboration and encouraging inquiry. We value a balanced approach to teaching and learning with opportunities for both structure and flexibility throughout the day. Pillar #3: Character Development: LFES aims to develop respect, kindness, integrity and strong character traits to enable our students to be outstanding, contributing citizens. We invite you to share your thoughts on this as well. Please feel free to call me at the school (604) 530-9973 or email me at: [email protected] 1

Dear Parents: It has almost been a year and a half since I have had the privilege of being the Principal of Langley Fundamental Elementary School.

We have tried to capture this in 3 pillars of our Fundamental System:

Update on our sister school

Gandidzanwa Coin Drive

As many of you know, our sister school is the Gandidzanwa Primary School in eastern Zimbabwe. Our annual coin drive will be the week of May 29th - June 5th with a goal of $7000. We will be putting all monies raised towards completion of a classroom block and the start of a computer lab. Please encourage your child to practice generosity and participate by bringing coins and/or doing odd jobs to earn coins. We will kick off our coin drive with a short assembly on May 25th at 1:45 pm. You can learn more about the history of our partnership with Gandidzanwa Primary School by going to http://hearafrica.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Gandidzanwa-Assembly-May-2014.pdf Parents are also encouraged to donate. Tax receipts will be issued from the "Hear Africa" foundation for donations over $20. Cheques can be made payable to Hear Africa. As part of this project, we have also planned a craft fair for June 17th. Further details will be forthcoming.

Thank you in advance for helping us to make a difference.

2:00-2:40 pm Students return to classes. Announcement will be made for the point total. At this point parents may go to the classes and pick up children if they wish. Please do not pick up your child from the playground area as we need to ensure that all of the children are safe and accounted for. When they return to their classes, teachers can release them into your care.

As a safety consideration, please remember to keep your pets at home for the day.
