This will be the last Log for Term 1, and as we edge closer towards the April school holidays it is important to note that students will be engaged in learning right up until the last day of school. The first day of school holidays is Saturday 13 th April and students return for Term 2 on Tuesday 30 th April, 2019. This week, Parent-Teacher interviews have been running across the school. These short meetings allow us to briefly communicate to parents each childs progress to date, including how they have settled in to a new class and new routines. It also provides teachers with a great opportunity to learn more about their students from the people who know them best; our parents and carers! This shoulder to shoulder partnership is incredibly important as consistent messages and support from both home and school allow for the most successful students. While this is the dedicated window for communication with all parents, please reach out to your child s classroom teacher if there is ever something you want to discuss. We do request that you schedule a meeting wherever possible so as not to disrupt lessons and allow our teachers the opportunity to give you their full time and attention. The last Log contained a lot of information relating to the adjusted grading system for student reports. If you have any questions relating to this, please feel free to raise it in your parent/teacher meeting, or speak to Mrs Mar, Mrs Hutton or Mr Lambert up in the office. As the last Log was quite lengthy, I didnt get an opportunity to write about our studentsparticipation in the Rugby League 7s Gala Day. The day was set up as a non-competitive opportunity for students to try playing rugby league. For this reason, the school decided to provide the opportunity to any child who may wish to play. The students had a fantastic day and all spoke of how much they loved the experience. While nobody kept scores or a table, it appeared that they all come back as winners! Special thanks must go to Miss Miklecic for taking on such a big responsibility with a large group of students and Mr Dave Cole who came out of retirement to help out on the day. Also a big thank you to the parents who assisted with training and getting the boys and girls ready to enjoy the day. There have been a number of concerns raised recently regarding people parking illegally around the school to pick up their children. The signage on our streets has been set up to create the safest environment for our students and to minimise congestion as much as possible. Those who ignore the signage are contributing to unsafe conditions for our students, and inconveniencing members of our community. Parking around any school is problematic at pick-up and drop-off time, but if everyone complies with the signage posted, then things will work as smoothly as possible. Moving forward, the school gates will be locked at Port Place, Kiss nDrop and Golden Grove during school hours (9.30-2.30pm). Moving forward, access to the school during this time will be through the main gates located out the front of the office. I know this will be inconvenient for some parents, but please be aware that this is a move made in the interests of student safety. If I do not get the chance to speak to you before the holidays, have a safe and relaxing break and I will look forward to seeing everyone at the start of Term 2! NAPLAN at KLPS 2019

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed in school and life. The

NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy

development. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of

language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

Between 14 -20 May, 2019 our school will participate in NAPLAN Online. Students do not need to be computer

experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum,

and our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online format. To see the types of questions and

interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site.

All tests except the writing test for Year 3 will be computer-based assessments. The writing test for Year 3 will be

paper-based. Teachers will ensure that students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate

support and guidance.

All Year 3 and 5 students will complete a practice test on Wednesday 27 March, 2019. No results are reported for this. It is a familiarisation activity with the online format and a technical test of our devices and the system. A sample of students will also be involved in an equating test in the period two weeks before the actual tests. No

individual results are reported from this equating test. Each year a different selection of sampled schools is needed.

The sample ensures a diverse range of student backgrounds and abilities is represented and ensures the validity of

the NAPLAN measurement scales.

NAPLAN Online test window: 14 - 24 May 2019

Library Monitors for 2019 The KLPS library is a very busy place. Last year our students borrowed over 35000 books. To enable the smooth running of the library I need to have a team of library monitors. These Year 6 students give up at least one morning and one lunch time each week to help with the many and varied tasks required in the library. After weeks of try outs these students have been selected: Charlotte V, Alexis V, Annika W, Meilynda T, Addison P, Peter Z, Bailie C, Isabelle C, Scarlett P, Jade J, Ava B, Jacob M, Joshua C, Jasmine B, Makayla N, James C, Frank J, Charlotte S, Mitchell G, Michelle K, Alan D and Eleanor S. I look forward to working with them in the library. They were presented their Library Monitors badges at the Primary assembly on Tuesday, 26th March.

At Kings Langley Public School we are once again encouraging ALL students to

participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). Last year 477 students completed

the challenge, with 72 achieving their Gold Certificate for 4 years of completion and 24

students receiving a Platinum Certificate for 7 years of completion. The Challenge is divided into three sections: - K-2; 3-4; 5-6.

Each section has its own book list, which are very easy to find on the PRC website. At

KLPS we have put a stripe on the spine of books to indicate their inclusion in PRC list.

Pink for K-2, green for 3 & 4 and orange for 5 & 6.

K-2 children must read a total of 30 books- 25 from booklist and 5 free choices.

3-4 and 5-6 children must read a total of 20 books- 15 from booklist and 5 free

choices.

Students will be able to enter the titles of books read from Monday, March 5th. All

books read since September 1st, 2018 are eligible to be entered.

Children can read suitable books from the booklist above their grade e.g. K-2 can read

from 3-4 booklist.

Books read to or by students at school, in library lessons or at home all count.

The PRC website logging on process is as follows:-

Book titles are entered on Premier’s Reading Challenge website

https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

Children use their DOE (Department of Education) internet username. This is

their first name and surname separated by ‘.’ (E.g. mary.smith) Some children have

a number at the end.

Infants’ passwords are set at school.

Infants students will have their username and passwords sent home by their

classroom teachers.

Primary students continue to use their same user name and the passwords they

have chosen and use at school.

# If you still have any questions about usernames or passwords see the classroom

teacher. (I do not have access to these and cannot help you.)

Years 3-6 will be given the opportunity, during some library lessons, to enter their PRC

titles. Library laptops are also available first half of lunch to complete this task.

When a book is treated in the library it will be added to each student’s reading list (by

me). So if you are ever entering your student’s reading records and notice some extra

books listed this is where they came from.

Entering of student’s reading MUST BE COMPLETED BY AUGUST 23rd.

Mrs Christine Andrews Teacher/Librarian. & PRC Coordinator.

SAVE THE DATE Mums and Grandmothers

Year 1 Mother’s Day performance on

Thursday May 9 at 12 noon in the Hall

Great Choice, Healthy School Canteen In a previous issue of the LOG Mr Lambert proudly shared the wonderful news of our canteen having met the requirements of the Healthy Canteen Strategy. The dedicated parents who work in our school operated canteen have achieved success in their endeavours to provide healthy (and yummy) food choices for students at KLPS and we are now recognised as a Great Choice Healthy School Canteen. In honour of the recognition, our local member Mr Mark Taylor presented the award to our Canteen Manager Mrs Sarah Baille on behalf of the KLPS community as we were one of the first schools to meet the guidelines. Mrs Baille was also personally recognised with an award along with Mrs Beth Bylsma, Mrs Narelle Allingham and Mrs Jodie Kayler-Thomson for their contributions. A huge congratulations goes to Mrs Baille and all the committed volunteers who keep our canteen school operating and our students supplied with nutritious and delicious food.

School Photos: Leading Images donates to our musical

During school photos week, the photographers from Leading Images arrived to set up for the day as they usually do. Much to their surprise they were met with the students finishing off a practice for the Musical. They were so impressed with what they saw that they have offered to donate $500 towards the big event. Well done, KLPS! Mrs Renae Mar

Koori Time

The children in Koori Time have been working on Phase 2 of the Adventure Playground. Students

have been busily creating Aboriginal Art Works and Yarning Stories to be part of the Outdoor Yarning

Circle. In Week 9 we busily painted our seating logs with a base colour. In Week 10 we started

painting our Aboriginal Art Works on to the logs. On Wednesday 3rd April Debra Hinton the

Aboriginal Education Officer for our region came out to give us assistance. All the children are very

proud of their efforts and have developed a sense of pride within our school community.

Dance Off! Junior Camp, a three-day residential camp for talented dancers, is being offered to Stage

3 students from 1-3 May 2019. The camp will cover a variety of dance workshops in different forms

including JFH, Lyrical Jazz, Musical Theatre, Hip Hop, and Classical Ballet. Choreographic workshops

will also feature throughout the camp and provide talented dancers with a unique opportunity to

feature in a collaborative piece. The parent exhibition will allow students to showcase their

achievements.

Over the three days of the camp, the tutors will provide blocks of uninterrupted time in specialist

workshops for talented students to further develop skills and performance.

Dance within the arts curricula focuses on understanding dance as an art form through performance,

composition and appreciation. Students attending the camp will develop a deep sense of

understanding of these concepts through participation and practice. In the creative and performing

arts, students are continually reflecting upon their own dance composition and performance.

Throughout the camp, students will review their work and gain an understanding of the nature of

dance. Working with others of similar talents and interests will provide a unique opportunity for

enthusiastic students.

Congratulations to Emily F, Jessica B and Charlotte H for their successful participation in this camp.

Chaplains Corner

Hello, I’d like to introduce myself; my name is Kathleen Burns. I have been on

work experience with the chaplain Mrs Brown for Term 1 this year.

I grew up in Kings Langley and was a student at

K.L.P.S. myself in class of ‘06. I attended Model

Farms High School and spent 5 years in Risk &

Compliance within the banking industry. Last year I

decided to change careers. I am now a student at

Alphacrucis College studying Chaplaincy and Pastoral

Care. I was interested to work with children because of

some tutoring that I had done and I want to make a

positive impact on their enjoyment and outcomes at school. After K.L.P.S. I

will do work experience with the chaplaincy team at Blacktown Hospital for a

different chaplaincy role.

What I have noticed during my time here is how the students have developed

effective strategies to help them manage their feelings as well as stronger

friendships through the Seasons for Growth program. I have felt welcomed by

the students and broader school community and I’m really thankful for the

experience the school has given me.

The students at KLPS have been very welcoming and friendly in both the

classroom and the playground.

Thanks Kathleen for your assistance this Term!
