GOALS

• To deliver cancer education and awareness activities to minority and medically underserved (MMU) cancer survivors and their families.

• To disseminate current, comprehensive information on cancer survivorship to MMU cancer survivors and providers that serve them.

INFORMATION DEVELOPMENT

• Through the CDC Cooperative Agreement, the LAF has developed the following resources to reach MMU cancer survivors:

– Living After Cancer Treatment brochure series– Cancer Survivorship Training Curriculum for

Promotoras – Addendums to the National Action Plan for

Cancer Survivorship– LIVESTRONG Podcast Series for Young Adults

with Cancer– Spanish-language Outreach Project

BROCHURE SERIES

• Serves as an introduction to cancer survivorship for the following populations:– Adolescent/Young Adult– African American– American Indian/Alaska

Native– Appalachian– Asian American– Arab American– Chinese American– Hispanic/Latino (English &

Spanish)– Multicultural– Pacific Islander– Vietnamese American

• Written at 6th grade reading level

• Available at livestrong.org/brochures

PROMOTORAS CURRICULUM

• The Cancer Survivorship Curriculum provides the knowledge, skills and motivation to improve the quality of life of Hispanic/Latino cancer survivors.

• The primary audience for the curriculum is Promotoras in the state of Texas. The secondary audience includes Hispanic/Latino cancer survivors who access services provided by Promotoras in their community.

• The curriculum consists of four sessions that are dedicated to providing the tools and strategies to promote cancer survivors to keep track of their emotional, physical and day-to-day concerns.

ADDENDUMS to NATIONAL ACTION PLAN

• The LAF has created addendums to the National Action Plan for Cancer Survivorship for African Americans and American Indian/Alaska Native communities .

• These addendums prioritize the cancer survivorship needs of these two communities to ultimately lead to improved quality of life and survival rates for survivors.

• State agencies, organizations & individuals can use these priorities to increase awareness of the needs of cancer survivors.

LIVESTRONG PODCAST SERIES

• 12 video podcasts to increase Adolescent/Young Adult (AYA) survivors’ awareness of the concerns survivors face and the resources available to meet those concerns.

• Features AYA cancer survivors sharing there stories and will include role models as hosts for each podcast.

• AYA survivors will be able to download the podcasts free from the websites they access regularly.

• Available June 2008

SPANISH OUTREACH PROJECT

• The LAF is raising awareness of the physical, emotional and day-to-day concerns of cancer survivors among Spanish-speaking populations.– Creating www.livestrong.org/espanol – Producing 8 60-second radio spots that will air on

Spanish radio stations across the country– Producing 5 one-hour call-in shows that will feature

cancer survivorship experts. Shows will air in LA, Chicago, San Antonio, NYC and Miami

• Website & radio spots launch June 1st. Call-in shows begin airing on June 15th.

EVALUATION EFFORTS

• The LAF evaluates each project with cancer survivors and healthcare professionals through an online survey.

• The brochures also include a pre-paid postage evaluation card that recipients can complete and return to the LAF.

• The LAF will track hits on livestrong.org/espanol and calls to LIVESTRONG SurvivorCare from Spanish-speaking cancer survivors.

MAJOR SUCCESSES

• Among cancer survivors who have received a copy of a Living After Cancer Treatment brochure, over 95% felt the brochure had helped them to identify their concerns about cancer.

• Of healthcare professionals who received copies of the Living After Cancer Treatment brochures, 100% would recommend that cancer survivors use the brochure to address their cancer-related needs.

• Over 572,000 brochures have been distributed.

• 85% of Promotoras trained with curriculum had an increased knowledge in cancer survivorship and the topics addressed by the program.

MAJOR SUCCESSES

• The LAF is committed to ensuring that each of these projects are sustained.

• We will support the distribution of the brochures and continue promotion of all online materials to cancer survivors and healthcare professionals.
