Cultural Club News

Chinese Cultural Club enjoyed a nice get-together party on Friday, April 24, 2015. We had our own Chow Fook Choy and his lovely wife, Cindy as his assistant perform some interesting magic tricks that he invented himself. We were delighted to have some passerby members join us. On April l7, 2015 Justin Trubiani arranged to have Joseph Go of Assistive Technology Resource Center to speak and demonstrate to us a large collection of equipment to use for the elderly and handicapped . Members were fascinated and were able to try out some of the items on display. May will be a busy month for us. Please join us on Fridays of each month unless the Center is closed. May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii, so wear a pretty lei On May 8th,The person wearing the most pretty lei will get a prize!

Spring will be in full bloom as we celebrate Tango no Sekku (Boys’ Day – May 5). Colorful paper carp waving in the breeze are the most visible symbol of the Boys’ Day Festival. The carp became the symbol of Boys’ Day because, to the Japanese, it is full of ener-gy and power, and stands for courage and the ability to attain high goals. And to commemorate this significant festival, the Lanakila Headstart children will be joining us to celebrate Boys’ Day. The members can look forward to a fun day participating in interac-tive games with the keikis, story telling, and a comical hula number (Hukilau). Other exciting events planned for the month of May include a fun-filled game of Bingo - try your luck and win a great prize. Also in May, Birthday celebrants will be enchanted by the soothing sounds of taisho koto performed by Mele O’Hawaii. Congratu-lations to our 90+ celebrants, Sally Nakata, Sally Shimabukuro, and Kenneth Nip. Happy Birthday to all of you. And speaking of birthdays, at the young age of 100, Gladys Goka, in celebration of her birthday (April 11), treated the JCC members with a deli-cious lemon chiffon birthday cake. She also honored each 90+ April celebrant with a beautiful lei. Thank you Mrs. Goka for your generosity and thoughtfulness. May you celebrate many, many more birthdays with the JCC members.

Remember: Come and support the JCC Show & Sell on Wednesday, May 13, 2015, from 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. Events: 5/4 – Boys’ Day 5/11 – Bingo 5/18 – Birthday 5/25 – No Meeting (Memorial Day)

The month of April was a full month with five Thursdays. On April 2 we were educated on preparing for disasters by John Cummings of the Dept. of Emergency Management of the C&C of Honolulu. Fliers were distributed on what we as Seniors should know about the difference between tsunamis and hurricanes and how to prepare for them. It was helpful to learn something new from the presentation.

An entertaining morning on April 9 featured Sensei Kyoko Sano and her karaoke students who shared their musical talents with us. A couple of dances added to the karaoke songs which ended with everyone joining in doing the “Tanko Bushi”.

All volunteers of the Lanakila Senior Center were recognized on April 16 with a special program, prizes for lucky winners, and delicious bento lunches. Mahalo to Catholic Charities. Also, Kudos to our Okinawa Nenchosha Club vol-unteers who make every Thursday morning a special time for us regardless of what is on the program. Many of you get to the Center early to set up chairs, or help with refreshments, or do other things necessary before we begin our weekly routine to start the day. Many, many thanks to each one of you for your faithfulness.

April birthdays were celebrated on April 23 with a special program by Derek Shiroma sensei and his guests from Okinawa. We honored six birthday celebrants including Shizue Ishihara (94) and Takejiro Higa (92) who received special recognition. The Nenchosha Club is truly blessed whenever we have special guests from Okinawa.

On April 30, we were impressed by the agility and performance of the Nuuanu YMCA Tai Chi group, many of them who are also seniors. Several types of styles were exhibited with appropriate music backgrounds. Golden fans were used for one and swords for another.

Aloha to everyone at Lanakila. Its been a while I wrote out the minuters for our club. Meetings were called by president Frances Dela Cruz. Role call was done by Agnes Pagan.

April 16th was Volunteer Appreciation Day. Rodney was our MC and what a character. Kapuna Power was held at the capital. Our Loyal Members with health problems get well soon. Show and Sell will be held on May 13th. We will be making pickled onions and lau lau plate lunch. We need members to donate the items such as onions and ham to make these dishes. Thank you to all our members who served at our meetings they are appreciated by everyone. Happy May Day!

Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center’s Annual Volunteer Appreciation Day Celebration 2015 was a huge success! Our volunteers were entertained by Emcee/Funny Man: Rodney Villanueva and our very own talented star: Iris Hiramoto; volunteers also received a very yummy bento from Sugoi’s and wonderful gifts, including a special bag and balloon animals, flowers, etc., by the balloon artist from Balloon Monsoon; and, they even got to get all dressed up for their photo booth session. It was a blast!
