Newsletter | January 20202

Happy 2020 to the Lanakila Seniors and our dear friends in the community!!! Hope you enjoyed the holidays. We look forward to seeing you as we start the New Year.

Have you noticed a change at our front door? We have new carpet! Thank you to American Carpet One and Aina Environmental for their tremendous kokua in renovating our senior Center front door area in December.

A big mahalo to the many donors of door prizes at our Christmas celebration. We had 334 people attend and received over 200 door prizes!!!

The LMPSC Leadership Conference will be on Friday, January 3, 2020. The officers of the cultural clubs; the instructors and assistant instructors as well as facilitators of Lanakila classes; volunteers who help with greeting, the front desk, the kitchens, the facilities and grounds, and sound system; and members of the Participant Advisory Board and Program Committee will be meeting from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lanakila Senior Center to talk about communication, center policies, orientation for club officers, learning more about all the clubs and classes being offered at the center, and an opportunity to do some visioning about the future of LMPSC.

Tax season is also around the corner and LMPSC will host the free AARP Tax Preparation days on designated Mondays in February, March and April. An appointment with the senior center’s front desk volunteers is required by calling 847-1322.

The Opening Day at the Legislature will be on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. Any center member interested in visiting our elected officials from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. is welcome to sign up at the front desk.

A friendly reminder, the 2020 calendar for the entire year is always posted on our center bulletin board for your reference. It reflect the scheduled new member orientation, Program Committee, and Participant Advisory Board meetings; what Saturdays are open at the center; when the center is closed each month; and when the special events are scheduled. From time to time the calendar is updated, so please check. The monthly calendar is also a part of the monthly newsletter, which is available in hard copy for 50 cents or on the www.catholiccharitieshawaii.orgwebsite.

We continue to celebrate our 50th Anniversary year and are doing various fundraisers to defray the cost of the various events. Thank you so much for all those who have helped! We truly appreciate your generosity.

Our next Show and Sell will be on Friday, February 7, 2020, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at Lanakila. Please SAVE THE DATE. As you do your Spring Cleaning, please remember LMPSC. We appreciate any gently used or new clothing, foot wear, household goods, holiday décor, special occasion cards, material for sewing, potted plants, toiletries, kitchen supplies, and other items that would be popular to sell in our Thrift Shop, Concession, or at the Show and Sell.

Me ke aloha pumehana (with warmest love),

OKINAWA NENCHOSHA CLUB UPDATE

By Irene Yamashita

Have you ever made a New Year’s Resolution? At the beginning of a new year, many of us make resolutions which are difficult to keep throughout the year. However, making a resolution or setting a goal or theme for the year may be a good way to do something that you otherwise would not have done or accomplished. Learning something new, doing more walking or exercises, etc. , may be something to think about.

In December (as in November), we met only twice before taking our holiday break. On Dec. 5 we played Bingo again for some lucky winners as well as giving out snacks to all who participated. Then on Dec. 12 we celebrated birthdays and ended the year by showcasing our talented members with a Variety Show. In celebrating monthly birthdays throughout the year, we rarely have more than 6 or 7 members who are honored; however, we honored 12 members which may be just a coincidence that December happens to be the twelfth month of the year. Those we honored were: Helen Goya, Tomie (Elsie) Higa, Henry Isara, Sally Joyce, Ronald Oshiro, Helen Palama, Yoshiko Sickels, Jean Sugihara, Alexander Takaki, Mitsuko Toguchi-Nakasone, Patrick Young and Carol Zukemura. God bless you all with many more birthdays!

In the Spirit of Christmas, the Variety Show featured many familiar Christmas songs or carols like Angels We Have Heard on High, White Christmas, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas with everyone joining in. Ippe NifeeDebiru to singers Harry Nakasone, Frank Toma, Patrick Young and Joyce Kishimoto; to hula dancer Diane Kawakami

as Bobby Ishihara sang “White Christmas”; and to the Toguchi Dancers who pantomimed (acted out) an original Okinawan version of “The 12 Days of Christmas”, which at times was funny or amusing. Adding that something extra as we ended the year was the drum performance of John Awakuni and Judy DiBianco of Hawaii Taiko Kai.

As we begin the New Year the following officers will be serving the Nenchosha Club:

President: Jane Higa1st Vice President: Harry K. Nakasone2nd Vice President – Elaine HirashikiRecording Secretary – Irene YamashitaTreasurer – Diane KawakamiAssistant Treasurers – Janet Ito & Richard TadaAuditors – Juliet “Sue” Shimabukuro, Franklin Toma & Flora NakasoneAdvisors – Mitsuko Toguchi-Nakasone, Yoshiharu Tengan & Tomie Higa

We look forward to another year of learning as we have fun and fellowship at the Center.

Ringing in the New Year is cause for celebration and a time to appreciate

all the good things that the past year has given and all the good things yet to come. Houses are cleaned and debts are paid before the end of the year. Special foods such as Ozone (soup with mochi), Oden (stew of fish cake, tofu, egg and radish) are prepared. Decorations of kadomatsu (arrangements of pine and bamboo placed at the entrance) and kagami mochi (stacked rice cakes) are the traditional ritual and symbolisms to ring in the New Year. Other traditions continue to be celebrated to ensure good fortune in the coming year. Here's wishing you and your family a wonderful year ahead!

On December 2, we appreciated learning “self-hand massage" from Iris Gushikuma-Seino. To do this, using your right hand, stretch each finger on the left hand slowly and feel the relaxation set in. Reverse the process. Yes, its comforting to know that we can heal ourselves simply by self massaging our hands. Why not give yourself a self-hand massage. You deserve the anti-stress moment.

Tanjoubi Omedetou Gozaimasu! to: Doris Doughty (90+); and Grace Tanouye (90 +). May you both have many more healthy years.

HAWAIIAN CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE

By Roland Manuel

On behalf of the Hawaiian Cultural Club, we would like to wish the staff a prosperous and safe 2020. The Hawaiian Cultural Club consists of members Roland Manuel, Sharon Tulba. Dorothy Mau, Diana Antonio, Anita Hasegawa, Carol Burrows, John Burrows, and Marcia Dias.

We have gone through many obstacles throughout the year. Though few in membership, we have managed to prosper.

In November 2019, we discovered the West Coast Waianae. We then continued out adventure on December 17, 2019 to Honolulu Hale. Fabulous Christmas wreaths, awesome decorated Christmas trees accompanied with huge Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus was witnessing of a huge Christmas. Then we scooted down to the Ohana Hale Marketplace on Ward Ave. There we celebrated Anita Hasegawa’s 98th birthday with lunch and gelato for dessert. Anita was ecstatic she had her “100 year glasses.” She had a lot of fun and so did we.

Continuing to Prosper in the New Year
