Dear Holy Family Community,

The school year is off to an exciting start with a 34,000 sq. ft. addition to the building and the second largest freshman class in school history!

Holy Family High School broke ground on the new addition last November and it has been amazing to watch how rapidly the project came together. Although the construction of the building itself happened quickly, it took a significant amount of time, effort and generosity (and patience!) from a great many people to make the entire project come together. In 2013, the Vision 100 committee came together to create a strategic plan for the school to help direct it as we moved towards our second century of serving the Catholic community of Northern Colorado. A three-phase campus master plan emerged out of this process and the generous contributions of everyone who supported the Achieving the Vision capital campaign has enabled us to complete the first phase of that master plan. The current freshman class will never experience Holy Family without the improvements to the arts, athletics, and student life facilities that the school now has. Many of our donors who gave generously were alumni or parents of students who were close to graduating. We particularly appreciate the support of those parents who supported the school even though their students would not reap the benefits. Your willingness to “pay it forward” is a profound testimony to the impact that our school has on the families who send their students to Holy Family.

Now that the construction of the new addition is complete, we turn our attention to the future. What is next for Holy Family? What strengths need to be reinforced and what are our areas for growth? The Achieving the Vision campaign gave our school a burst of energy and a sense of focus that we want to preserve. In order to maintain that energy and direction, we are preparing to launch a new strategic planning process known as Vision 2020. We are currently identifying members of our community who will serve in leadership roles for Vision 2020. Later this fall, all community members will receive surveys asking them to reflect on their experience with Holy Family.

As always, we are honored to work with your family to educate the whole child in Spirit, Mind, and Body. Holy Family is blessed to have such dedicated members of our school community—students and their families, alumni, faculty, staff, and donors— who are willing to make sacrifices on our behalf. May God bless all those who have contributed to making Holy Family High School what it is today.

Pax Christi,

Matt HauptlyPrincipal - Holy Family High School

Achieving The Vision Ribbon Cutting CeremonyOn October 11, Holy Family

principal Matt Hauptly, along with board members Alex Ariniello, Ann Marie White, Father Joe McLagan, and Lisa Kukura of The Catholic Foundation, officially opened the new wing of the school. It was the culmination of years of hard work that finally came to fruition.

“It was 11 months ago today that we broke ground on this new addition to Holy Family,” said Hauptly in his speech to those gathered, which included students, alumni, faculty, and parents. “And there have been a lot of twists and turns along the way.”

Aside from typical construction issues, some of those “plot twists” he referred to were one of the snowiest spring seasons in recent memory, taking the Commons offline prior to the end of the school year, and, possibly the biggest surprise of them

all, unexpected damage to the floor in the main gym.

But through the generous help of the Holy Family community and their tireless support of the Achieving the Vision Capital Campaign that saw the school add six new classrooms, an auxiliary gym, new weight room and an expansion of the commons, the project is finally complete.

By repurposing the space where the weight room was formerly located, Holy Family was also able to expand the music room, creating more storage for the growing band, an instructional room for piano students, and dressing rooms for the performing arts students.

“Speaking on behalf of the institution, I want to express our gratitude to all of you for helping us complete this journey,” Hauptly said. “A building is just a building. It can be

a temple to God or a Tower of Babel."

“So for us, the journey does not end with the completion of this structure.”

Repairs to the main gym are expected to be complete in late December. The Our Lady of Lourdes Counseling Center, which will also open this fall, features eight new, spacious offices for guidance and college counselors along with Father Joe McLagan and Mary Vulcani in Campus Ministry. That renovation project was made possible by generous gifts from our Holy Family Community at the annual Tiger Gala last April.

Members of the Holy Family community, especially alumni, are encouraged to visit the campus to see firsthand all of these wonderful new spaces.

Putting Faith Into Action - The Big Idea ProjectFrom the moment a student

begins their journey at Holy Family High School, they understand that they will be educated in Spirit, Mind, and Body, and that faith and service are as much a part of their time as academics and extra-curricular activities. Holy Family students get involved in so many ways, whether it is volunteering at the soup kitchen, donating perishables or mentoring future Tigers. In any given year, each grade level performs thousands of hours of service in their community.

And while those service activities are rewarding on many levels, tying it into the school’s Mission Statement as well as the theological curriculum was something that Theology chair Josh Havey and his team really wanted to pursue when they created the Justice and Peace class.

The Big Idea Project is something that every junior at Holy Family is doing. It starts out small by brainstorming ideas in the classroom. The best of those ideas are eventually showcased in the theater. From there it is on to the state competition at Columbine High School and eventually the state finals.

“We are excited about the Big Idea Project because it challenges our students to take what they are learning in class and to design their own project that hopefully they are passionate about,” Havey said. “To look for a need and try to look for a problem and learn about the problem and then try to do something about it.”

One team from Holy Family --

Madison Lujan ‘20, Kaitlin Rentmeester ‘20, Sophie Schmid ‘20

and Marialejandra Silva ‘20 – made it all the way to the state finals with their project that provided luggage for foster kids who were moving from home to home typically with their worldly possessions stuffed into a trash bag.

“They connected with a group who had some bags and they raised some money, and they bought the bags,” Havey said. “They set up a day to deliver them to the kids and they did crafts with them, painted the bags for them and made them very personal, it was all very impressive.”

At the state finals they were awarded with the Best Example of Generous Leadership and their prize was a trip to Buckley Air Force Base to meet with some very influential local leaders, including: Col. Patrick Hanlon, Vice Commander, 140th Wing Colorado Air National Guard; Lt. Col. Tracy LaTourrette, the first female fighter pilot from Colorado; Retired Capt. Aimee Zick and Major Kinder Blacke. They got to watch some of the F-16s take off and listened to several talks.

“It was really amazing and a great experience with those students and I hope we can continue to weave this

project into our curriculum to help the students see just how powerful they are and how they can use their talent with each other for good,” said Havey, who was struck at one point during the talks when one of the speakers brought up St. Vincent de Paul, the patron saint of charitable societies (and also his patron saint) who is known for his charity and compassion for the poor.

“You just never know and in the early stages everyone is starting with the same amount of time and yes, some ideas do sound better to me than others, but it’s pretty surprising how the students make these projects come to life.”

Holy Family will annually seek approximately 45 mentors for the Big Idea Project. HFHS alumni are especially encouraged to volunteer as mentors.

In a world where public displays of hate are occurring daily it is more important than ever to be a school community that does not tolerate such acts. We live in a society where we are taught we must navigate our daily life worried about school shootings, hate and intolerance. We go through lock down drills where we learn how to run, hide or fight to save our lives. We deal with hate online in social media, leading to high rates of anxiety and depression. Could there be another way? Is there a way to stop the hate and violence before it starts?

In 1913, the Anti-Defamation League was created to fight hate and discrimination. Today, it is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world without hate by promoting peace. We thought we could be inspired by the Anti-Defamation League to be proactive and stand up and demonstrate peace, love and acceptance for each other in a “No Place for Hate” school environment. Peace Team – No Place for Hate was founded to make a change. I was involved in this program in middle school after there was a violent stabbing on the playground at my school.

The mission of Peace Team at Holy Family High School is to create more peaceful classrooms, communities, and workplaces by combating hate and intolerance and increasing appreciation for the richness of our diversity. We live in a world where we are witnessing some

of the most political divisiveness our country has seen in some time. We believe there is actually more that unites us as people than divides us. The HF Peace Team is comprised of high school students and faculty advisors who are passionate about promoting peace in our school and community. Peace Team members wanted to create the Ripple Effect where the actions of one individual can have far reaching effects on others. One small act of kindness effects one person, who effects another and another in a positive way.

“I feel that it is important to strive to make our community better in a way that makes people smile like our kindness notes,” said Hannah Hodgson ’20, describing why she wanted to be part of the Peace Team. Megan Harvey ‘20 wants to create change throughout our school. “I feel like it is really important to show love to others which can change a person’s day.”

Perhaps you have received an encouraging thoughtful post-it note on your locker, desk or car. This was

our initial Kindness Post-It Note Project that was created to positively impact our HF community.

The kindness notes have already made an impact in our classrooms. “I noticed when we put the kindness notes in Mr. Bishop’s class how many people were saying positive and happy things about the notes, even Mr. Bishop,” remarked Ashley Newport ’20. Jordan McDonald ’20 believes the kindness notes have definitely impacted others. “The kindness notes really helped others throughout their day,” McDonald said.

In the future, we hope to have a Kindness Tree class competition where we are each asked to do an Act of Kindness for another and write it down on a heart shaped leaf that we will display in the cafeteria. We want to make the Kindness Tree bloom! We also hope to create a “Chalk the Walk” campaign along the sidewalk at the front entrance of Holy Family High School to greet students, faculty, staff, and guests with kind positive thoughts as they enter our school. By simply showing kindness, love, and respect for others, we can truly make a difference in the world.

As the beautiful prayer to St. Francis says, “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, where there is hatred let me sow love… where there is sadness, joy...where there is darkness, light.” Perhaps our small acts of peace, love and kindness will help shape our world without hate.

Whether moving to a new state, a new city, or just relocating schools, changes of all types can be difficult. The pressures of making new friends, adjusting to a different environment, and high school itself can be quite frightening.

Fortunately, at Holy Family, a club specifically made for transfer students can offer additional help and information for those that most need it.

The Tiger Transfer Club, headed by Mrs. Lisa Doroff, aims at providing a place where new students can talk about their classes, questions, and any thoughts that they may have. It is also a place of community, where you can talk and become friends with those having the same concerns and struggles as yourself.

“The purpose of the Tiger Transfer group is to welcome the new students who have transferred in to Holy Family and to help them feel connected to each other and to our school,” Mrs. Doroff explained. “We have the ‘Freshmen Family’ groups for our new freshmen and I wanted something similar for our new transfer students to help ease the transition and make them feel welcome at our school. Everyone in the group shares the common theme that they have transferred to a new school, but they are not freshmen.”

“The biggest challenge for me was learning the curriculum,” Kevin Dawson ‘22, a local transfer student commented. “The school is pretty

advanced, so it was a little hard for the first few days.”

My own personal move from Oregon to Colorado presented its complications. With school starting two days after my family and I got here, my schedule was packed and I was stressed the first couple of days. The Tiger Transfer group has definitely helped me feel more comfortable and at ease with school and classes.

Most of the students I have come into contact with at Holy Family have been very nice and helpful. Of course

it was hard, and is still hard to fully adjust and assimilate yourself in to pre-existing friend groups. Aside from moving to a different state, going from a public high school to a private Catholic high school is quite the difference as well.

“The school has a good community...Everybody here is really nice,” Brendan Coca ‘20, another transfer student, said.

Wherever you come from, having people you can talk and relate to is of utmost importance. It can be hard to make friends if you’re shy and not the most extroverted, so knowing those who are new as well can be very beneficial. Getting involved in clubs, sports, and other activities can also be a great help in meeting people while doing something you enjoy. Together, we can make this school year a great one!

A Welcome to OurTransfer Students

Spring Athletics Recap

Baseball What a run.

It didn’t end the way that head coach Marc Cowell and his senior-laden team of Tigers wanted, but you can’t complain about being one of the final four teams standing.

“It feels like Holy Family baseball is back,” said Cowell, whose programs won Class 3A titles in 2010, 2013 and 2014 – one of those years with Eric Nakayama in command. “You get to the Final Four and you lose and we are upset and disappointed about it when most teams would be thrilled to be here."

“To me, that means our expectations are back where we want them to be. We are going to reload and get back after it next year.”

The Tigers finished 22-7 overall and were 14-2 in the Tri-Valley League, where they shared the league title with 5A Windsor.

They earned a top eight seed in the Class 4A playoff field and with that comes the right to host a regional tournament. And in what Cowell called “the toughest day of the year,” the Tigers scored a walk-off win - thanks to Jacob Callaway ‘19 - in extra innings against Denver North (2-1) and then beat Centaurus (11-4) to punch their ticket to Colorado Springs and the double elimination state tournament.

On the first weekend at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, Holy Family rode the bat of Collin Kringlen ‘19 – who finished with eight hits, including three home runs, in

the three games – to advance to the second weekend.

Their return to Colorado Springs didn’t go as well. They faced eventual champion Pueblo West at UC Health Park (home of the minor league Vibes) and were in a huge hole early on. The Cyclones got after ace Weston Siefken ‘19 early for six runs in the first inning

and rolled to a 14-1 victory in five innings.

“We fell behind and I felt like we had some pretty good pitches in the first inning, but we just didn’t get the call and it put [Siefken] into some fastball counts and that team is way to good to be in that position,” said Cowell after the game. “It was a deep hole and we just weren’t able to dig ourselves out of it.”

Girls Golf Hailey Schalk ‘20 is on the brink of

history.

In a weather-shortened Class 4A tournament in May, Schalk fired an even-par round of 72 at Pelican League Golf Course in Windsor to win by six shots and claim her third straight title.

Moretto (1995-97) and Mullen’s Ashley Tait (2002, 2004-05) as the only three-time champions since the sport was sanctioned in 1990.

“It feels good to represent Holy Family and to know that all my hard work has paid off,” said Schalk, whose teammate Jessica Mason ‘22 finished fifth. “I practice every day for hours, so it is nice to have that reward.”

Schalk knows that all eyes will be on her next spring in her quest for a fourth title, and she understands that it is not just going to be handed to her.

“I think it would be amazing to win four and I definitely want to, and I’m going to keep working hard to get there,” said Schalk, who has committed to the University of Colorado. “Honestly, I think I can improve everywhere as long as I keep practicing like I am and maybe even harder, then I think I can get there.”

Girls Tennis The Tigers qualified their entire

team for the Class 3A state tournament after an almost flawless run in the regional that saw them crown four positions as champs.

After a successful first day at both the Centennial Courts and at the University of Northern Colorado’s facility, the Tigers dipped on day two at the state tournament in Greeley.

No. 2 singles player Lindsey Bartoletta ‘21 and the No. 4 doubles team of Madi Lujan ‘20 and Kelly Whitehill ‘21 each made the semifinals in their respective draws, winning twice on the first day.

Unfortunately Bartoletta fell to Peak to Peak’s Trini Somasundaram, who lost just seven games in four matches en route to her second straight title at the position. Bartoletta had a chance to work her way back through the consolation bracket for a chance at third place, but was upended by Colorado Academy’s Charlotte Pulido 6-2, 6-1.

Track & Field Day one of the state meet at

Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood was by far the biggest and best day for the Tigers.

The boy’s 4x800 meter relay team of Rasce Englehardt ‘19, Christian Montoya ‘19, Alex Martinez ‘19 and Braden Bartlett ‘19 won a state title in a

school record time of 7:59.67 and did so in dramatic fashion.

For the first 2,900 meters it looked like the teams from Alamosa and Frontier Academy might pull off the upset of the top-seeded Tigers. The Tigers were in the hunt, but weren’t sure what kind of effort they were going to get from their anchor leg (Bartlett) – who had been nursing a bug all week and even before he got to the meet, was still feeling the effects.

What transpired over the final 300 meters will live on for quite a while in Holy Family track and field lore.

“It was all just adrenaline. And I don’t know who it was or what team, but they started passing me with 250 to go and it just switched something on in my head and I asked 'What am I doing here man?’,” said Bartlett, who was nipped at the finish line on day two in the 800 meters by Denver West’s Yasin Sado. “So I turned the jets on and stayed with (Alamosa) and with all the thoughts of all my training in the past … and in that final 100, I decided I just had to give it my all because this was going to be my last 4x800 ever."

“So I pushed it out there and I’m glad I did.”

The girl's 4x800 team of Ashley Darrah ‘19, Amanda Ward ‘19, Alyssa Wells ‘21 and Gabby Thomas ‘20 finished in 9:50.79, good enough for a fourth place finish against a top-notch field.

Also finding her way onto the podium was high jumper Katie Farmer ‘20, who despite a broken right foot – yes, a broken foot – was able to clear 5-feet and finish in a tie for third place.

On day two of the state meet, Brody Welch ‘21 -- who was the 17th of 18 qualifiers in the boy’s discus event -- made it all the way to the finals and eventually onto the podium with a personal best throw of 134 feet in the opening round.

“Coming in 17th, you really never have that expectation that you are going to make the finals, but I am just so thankful to be here,” Welch said. “But you give it your best shot, that’s what I did and I’m pretty happy with that.”

Girls Soccer The Tigers had high hopes for a

brilliant 2019 season after returning a youthful core that made it all the way to quarterfinals the year before.

But Holy Family never discovered the consistency from the previous season and instead rode a rollercoaster all season long. They would finish third in the Tri-Valley League and ultimately earn a No. 13 seed in the Class 4A state tournament.

In the opening round against George Washington, on a brutally cold and wet night, Nicolette Sandoval ‘19

scored twice and Kody Clements ‘19 bagged the other in a 3-1 victory over the Patriots.

But as quickly as the high came, it went away. In the next round, the Tigers traveled south to Lakewood Memorial Field to face No. 4 Wheat Ridge and lost 3-1 to the Farmers.

Boys Lacrosse There was a lot of hype

surrounding the brand new boy’s lacrosse program.

After back-to-back unbeaten seasons as a junior varsity program, the Tigers entered their inaugural varsity

season with high hopes.

Things started off with a bang. Holy Family won five of its first six games and quickly climbed up the state's RPI rankings – the same rankings that help teams earn their way into the playoffs.

The Tigers then lost six of their next eight games, but the work they did early on was still good enough to allow them to sneak into the playoffs in year No. 1.

The dynamic trio of Trace Norwell ‘20 (35 goals), Braeden Peters ‘20 (33 goals) and Dominic Roller ‘20 (30 goals) accounted for 108 of the Tigers 132 goals during the season and will look to carry their momentum into next season.

Girls Lacrosse In their first season, a limited junior

varsity schedule, the Tigers went 3-2.

They dropped their opening two game on the road, but won home games against Kennedy, Dawson School and Denver North.

Holy Family will play its first varsity season in the spring of 2021.

Alumni Spotlight

Barb Pickup Dallage'95

Barb Pickup had the whole world in front of her when she graduated as Holy Family’s valedictorian in 1995.

She was on her way to the University of Notre Dame and, as she recalls, “I was going to be pre-med and I was going to be a doctor.” But then a little thing called organic chemistry stepped in and derailed those plans rather quickly … and as a self-described perfectionist, the reality of those plans taking the wrong fork in the road hurts.

So what was the girl from Tulsa, Oklahoma, who grew up vacationing in Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park from the time she was six months old to do with her life? On a whim, she stepped into the College of Arts and Sciences building one early evening in South Bend, and someone there told her to try out science business.

“It just proves that if you leave your heart and your mind open, somebody else will take the wheel and take you to the place where you are supposed to be,” said Pickup, whose choice to make that stop forever changed the course of her life.

She ended up taking both a physical and historical geology class at Notre Dame, crossing paths with and taking classes from one of the world’s foremost paleontologists in Keith Rigsby Jr. – who told her that this was her calling – and went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Geology.

“When you first dive into something like this – and geology wasn’t even on the radar my entire life – and when you find that one thing that resonates with you, it is really easy to excel and to make a career out of it because it is just your thing,” said Pickup, who had never taken an earth science course during her time at Holy Family.

Looking back, Pickup was

adamant that her time at Holy Family set her up for success and gave credit where credit was most certainly due. “I will never forget Mrs. Peggy Greaney. I really think she was one of the formative people that really solidified my love of science in the first place,” she said. “I always felt like we were a true family and I think that experience it set me up for success for my whole life, but especially moving into the high pressure world of competitive academia in college. At least Holy Family provided me the education and the social preparedness to be able to deal with that large of a change.”

Pickup, who is now the Senior Vice President of Operations at a Denver-based startup called Fracture ID, has put her degree to good use over the years. She has worked at the U.S. Geological Survey doing water quality monitoring and did extensive research at Yellowstone Lake in Wyoming.

“No matter what side of the discipline that my job was at the time, I found a lot of job satisfaction and think you get to the point where your career can go in a lot of different ways within your chosen task,” said Pickup, whose mother was on the Hearts on Fire planning committee which helped orchestrate Holy Family High School’s move to Broomfield. “But when you can find joy in what you do and no matter which direction you are taking, I think it really tells you that you made the right decision.”

Thomas Spellman '06

Many kids grow up spending their days outside playing in the park, lounging on the couch and playing video games or immersing themselves in whatever extracurricular activity was available.

Thomas Spellman was a little different.

Yes, the 2006 Holy Family graduate was a golfer, but when he wasn’t on the links, you could probably find him in Dr. Christopher Willard’s dental office at Fresh Start Smiles.

“It feels really great. Most kids when they are really young, and even myself – I wanted to be a football player or something famous. But I sort of dialed that back really quickly when I realized I wasn’t going to be that big,” he said.

“But my dentist (Dr. Willard) here was always really awesome and I grew up at Nativity which is six blocks away from our office right now. It was accessible to walk over here and just come hang out.”

Spellman knew from an early age that dentistry was his calling. After his time at Holy Family, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and then later his Doctorate in Dental Surgery at Creighton University.

While at Creighton, he met his future wife, Stacey Nygaard, and the two moved to Fargo, North Dakota where they practiced at separate facilities for three years.

Things came full circle for Spellman

in 2018 when he came back home to Colorado with Stacey to take over Fresh Start Smiles after his childhood dentist and friend, Dr. Willard, lost his battle with cancer. Upon taking over the business, he knew instantly that putting his name and business out there was going to be a huge stepping stone. What better way to do that, he thought, than giving back to his alma mater by being a vendor at the 2019 Tiger Fun Run. It is one of many ways he hopes to be involved with Holy Family now that he is back in the local community.

“And I hope to continue to grow with that. I know that there are a lot of dentists in the area and more than anything I like the idea of a high school kid who started out, maybe I don’t want to be a dentist, but at least I can know that someone has been through all of it. If they have questions or if they want to think about doing something else, what’s it like to go to eight years of school after you leave Holy Family.”

“Honesty, I don’t know where my life would have been if I had just gone to a regular school. As far as Holy Family went, they always had those extra activities and I know that when we got to go certain places and see certain things that – even some of the golf courses we had the opportunity to play – weren’t cheap, but they gave us those opportunities. I just thought that in comparison to what I have been given, that this was really an easy decision,” said Spellman, who along with Stacey will welcome their first child in 2020.

Spellman looks back fondly at his days at Holy Family and it should be no surprise that one of his biggest influences in the classroom was Peggy Greaney and the anatomy class. “She had that really thick Boston accent and I can still hear it in the back of my head,” he recalls. “She didn’t really teach a lot about the teeth, but I knew I had to know all of this.”

Dear Holy Family High School Community,

Holy Family High School prides itself on being a community of faith with a commitment to academic excellence. The excitement watching our student body begin the 2019-20 school year as our campus changed day by day is difficult to put into words. But the cheer heard across the building when we announced the opening of the commons and cafeteria echoed across our campus. As we continue to settle into our new addition, I reminisce about our graduates while also thinking of our future students who will be offered the best in Catholic education along with all our Holy Family High School traditions. From our beginning in 1922 at our Utica campus in Denver to our graduates from our Broomfield campus I can only imagine the sense of pride you all must have in Holy Family.

“Being a student at Holy Family means a lot to me. It means Faith, Education, Friendship and most of all Family. Attending Holy Family games and shadowing in my eight-grade year, I knew I always wanted to be a Tiger. I witnessed how Holy Family students supported each other and the school, displayed their faith, and the education they were receiving. I’m proud to be a Tiger and attend the same school many of my family attended.” – Mia Lombardi Class of 2023

Keeping Catholic education affordable remains one of our primary goals, but reality is tuition does not cover the full cost of educating our students. The gap between the tuition charged and the cost to educate a Holy Family student is $3,500. We are asking all our community members to help us bridge that gap. All gifts, whether $50 or $3,500 work together to provide direct benefits to our students and faculty.

It is through the generosity of alumni, alumni parents, current parents, faculty, staff, and friends that Holy Family High School can nurture the spiritual, intellectual and physical abilities of our students in order to prepare them for today’s challenges while becoming the Catholic leaders needed for tomorrow.

Holy Family is committed to offering its students the optimum environment to nourish their Spirit, Mind, and Body. In order to continue the success and achieve our goal of keeping Catholic education affordable, we need your assistance. I ask you and your family to prayerfully consider making a gift in any amount to support the Fund for Holy Family.

To learn more about the Fund for Holy Family or to support our mission please visit www.holyfamilyhs.com to make your gift today!

If you were unable to attend our Homecoming celebration, I hope you will visit soon to take a tour of our new addition.

May God Bless you for your support of Holy Family High School

Pax Christi,

Matt Hauptly, J.D.Principal - Holy Family High School
