Lamorna Cove – for sale freeholdThe land for sale within the whole, as illustrated on the boundary plan within these details, includes the private road leading down into the cove, beach, foreshore to low water mark, private moorings within the harbour, boat launching slipway and harbour wall, kayak and boat storage facility and extensive cliff to the South on the South West coast path. All the commercial interests have run successfully since 1952.

The restaurant/café has 30 inside covers and 80 outside covers on a two level patio overlooking the sea.

Adjoining the restaurant is the gift shop/gallery that has temporarily ceased trading but was generating about £6,000 p.a in rent. Further ancillary buildings are included.

There are two pay and display car parks and further overflow parking for up to 60 spaces, accessible all year round. The parking is currently sub-let and generates about £40,000 p.a. from the 80 spaces in total.

The boat and kayak unit was formally a small water sport centre when it offered boats, pedalo’s and kayaks throughout the summer. This has generated about £5,000 p.a in rent in the past and has temporarily ceased trading. Also included is further retail space that has been used as a diving facility for a diving school in the past.

Historical BackgroundThis sale offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own one of the last remaining bays in private hands and one that is totally unspoilt and quintessentially Cornish. Apart from the natural beauty of this small cove, Lamorna is perhaps best known for the Post-Impressionist artists who came to stay here in the early part of the twentieth century. As a result, Lamorna Cove is one of the most painted and celebrated pieces of British coastline.

Much of the history of Lamorna Cove is connected with the quarries, now long finished. The local economy was based upon granite, cut by hand from the cliffs and shipped throughout the world. The harbour and road into the Cove were a result of the quarries and the ‘tips’ of granite off cuts remain for all to see.

At the end of its industrial period Lamorna was discovered by the artist colony in Newlyn and it became an outpost of the Newlyn School, led by Samuel John ‘Lamorna’ Birch to discover Lamorna’s light and colour and its never-ending variety of seasonal beauty. He lived in Lamorna shortly after the turn of the Twentieth Century and it was not long before he was followed by other artists, many of whom were associated with the famous Newlyn School.

Laura Knight is probably the best known of the group, which continued to grow throughout the early years of the last century. Other artists included Harold Knight, Alfred Munnings, Dod and Ernest Proctor¸ Charles and Ella Naper, and Robert and Eleanor Hughes. Even Augustus John was a visitor to the thriving settlement. The colony was somewhat fragmented by the onset of the First World War, but Lamorna Birch remained there for many more years.

Up to the present day, Lamorna has been popular with painters, potters, craftsmen and writers. Some of the better known associated with the hamlet are John le Carré and Derek Tangye. There are still many artists and craftsmen living in the area around Lamorna. The area boasts several

potteries and local paintings can be found in shops in Mousehole and further afield.

Through most of this period, the Cove and surrounding lands were owned by Colonel Paynter, who developed the Cove economically and encouraged and accommodated artists and writers to live here.

The third period is modern history and tourist oriented. Colonel Paynter’s daughter, Mary Elizabeth, sold the cove to Mr Daniels in 1952 from when it became more commercialised. Mr Balsden purchased the cove in 1982 and the current owners have enjoyed Lamorna Cove since 1995.

South Cornish CoastLamorna Cove lies in the heart of some of the country’s most picturesque coastline and beaches that includes Penberth, Porthcurno, Porthgwarra and around to Land's End and Sennen Cove. The Minack Theatre at Porthcurno is a stunningly positioned, unique cliff side open air theatre with year round attractions and shows popular with tourists. Lamorna lies on the Penwith Peninsula approximately 5 miles south of Penzance and lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB); almost a third of Cornwall has AONB designation, with the same status and protection as a National Park. The South West Coast Path passes through the cove.
