LAKEWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT ANNUAL REPORT 2014
LAKEWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 2014
In review of the year 2014 the Lakewood Police Department, through its Public Safety Initiative, continues to provide for the safety and security of our residents, businesses, and visitors. The Division of Police is very committed to increasing our visible presence in our community to deter the opportunity to commit violations of our laws. Our visibility has led to reductions in several areas of crime, specifically Burglaries and Breaking and Entering. The presence of our Uniform Division, work by our Investigative and Narcotics Units, and dedication of all our support staffs has a direct impact on crime and improving the quality of life in Lakewood.
UNIFORM DIVISION
The Uniform Patrol Division continued to be the front line in our service to the community. The officers of this division have committed themselves to remaining visible in identified problem areas. They have been active in their pursuit of violators breaking our traffic and criminal laws. The Lakewood Police Departments goal of keeping Lakewood a safe community is advanced on a daily basis by the work of the Uniform Officers.
TRAINING DIVISION
Our Training Division continues to do an excellent job in handling many different functions for the Department. The Lakewood Police Department stands apart from many of our contemporaries in the amount and depth of training we undertake each year. Appropriately training our police officers is one of the most important and cost effective ways to provide quality service to our citizens and to provide insurance to the City that we have been properly prepared to do our duty.
SPECIAL OPERATIONS
The officers assigned to the Special Operations Unit continue to work effectively with our residents, businesses, and youth of the community, whether in schools, parks, or on the streets. The Neighborhood Police Officers have been a very visible and positive presence in the community and have done exceptional work in keeping our citizens connected to the Lakewood Police Department. The D.A.R.E. officers work every day with the schools and youth in Lakewood to prepare them for the challenges that are ahead of them.
INVESTIGATIVE DIVISION
The Investigative Division remains committed to supporting the arrests made by the Patrol Division through the investigation, processing, and presenting of the case to the appropriate courts. The Detectives utilize special investigative techniques and technologies to solve some very complex cases. The Detectives work with all our victims of crime to be sure they are represented and afforded all the benefits of the Criminal Justice System.
NARCOTICS UNIT
The important work of the Narcotics Units is a critical component of our overall strategy to addressing crime in Lakewood. A significant portion of our criminal activity is a direct result of illegal drug use. Having these officers dedicated to arresting and prosecuting the dealers of illegal drugs is critical to having an impact on our crimes. Lakewood, like many communities throughout the state, has seen a dramatic increase in overdoses and deaths related to Heroin. The Lakewood Police Department and its officers continue to work with Federal, State, and County partners to deal with the supply and use of Heroin. This is a problem that is not limited to our borders and requires an intensive effort and response from across all the borders.
DISPATCH
The City of Lakewood made an important upgrade to its emergency communications. We now have an 800mhz state of the art communication system along with computer and physical upgrades to our communications center. This will position the City of Lakewood to be on the leading edge of emergency communications in the region for the foreseeable future. The Emergency Dispatchers have all been trained and are utilizing Emergency Medical Dispatch to citizens requesting medical assistance and provide additional information to responding Emergency Medical Technicians.
ANIMAL CONTROL
The Animal Control Division was at full staffing for 2014. The Animal Shelter has undergone some much need improvements to interior rooms to provide additional capacity and improved care for the animals. Further improvements to the facility will begin in 2015.
PARKING ENFORCEMENT
The Parking Enforcement Division was at full staffing with two full time and one part time officer. Two of the Municipal lots were rehabilitated with new paving and new kiosks for payment. All the parking meters were removed from the lot and customers now have the ability to pay by cash or credit. Further improvements to municipal lots are occurring presenting safer lots and easier forms of payment to customers.
