LAKE/SUMTER NEWSLETTER October 2019
Lake/Sumter branch of AAUW is committed to a diverse community that stimulates a culture of learning and understanding and enhances a member's experience. We aspire to create an inclusive and equitable branch that represents, supports, and celebrates diversity of all kinds.
President’s Message
We would like to thank all the members who participated in the
September meeting which was a showcase of our branch
activities. Each woman was given a "passport" which was stamped at
each table she visited to learn about an opportunity to be involved.
Passports were then put into a basket, winners drawn, and prizes
awarded. Thanks to the women who donated treats which helped
create a "party" atmosphere for this event. We are serious about our
mission and are having fun at the same time.
This newsletter is filled with information for members and their friends about coming
events, all of which are very important. Please take time to read about them and mark
your calendars. Questions? Call a board member or committee chair. We are here for
you. 2019-2020 promises to be an exciting year for all

October - Italian American Heritage Month
Over 26 million Americans of Italian descent currently reside
in the United States, making up America’s seventh largest
ethnic group. The heritage month is in October to coincide
with Columbus Day, the national holiday celebrated on the
second Monday of the month.
Italians have impacted American history in many ways.
• Amerigo Vespucci, who explored the east coast of South America between 1499 and
1502, is the source of the name "America."
• Christopher Columbus discovered the New World, landing on various Caribbean
islands that are now the Bahamas and the island called Hispaniola.
• Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano was the first European to map the Atlantic
coast of today's United States.
• Filippo Mazzei, a physician and promoter of liberty, was a close friend and
confidant of Thomas Jefferson. He published a pamphlet containing the phrase
"All men are by nature equally free and independent."
• Pope Leo XIII dispatched a contingent of priests and nuns to assist immigrants in
the United States. Among them was Sister Francesca Cabrini, who founded 14
American colleges, 98 schools, 28 orphanages, eight hospitals, and three training
schools. She was the first American saint after her canonization in 1946.
• Geraldine Anne Ferraro became the first woman and first Italian American vice-
presidential candidate on a national party ticket in 1984.

Public Policy Two bills that support women have been passed into state law. AAUW FL supported
both bills.
• HB 49, SB 332: Dignity for Incarcerated Women Act
This bill requires healthcare products, including feminine hygiene products, be
made available without prescription to women in any correctional facility of the
state or other political division. It also restricts male employees in conducting
pat-down and strip searches in these facilities, and in entering facilities where
women are unclothed.
• H 851, S 540 Human Trafficking
This bill includes numerous provisions for addressing human trafficking but
major elements focus on training professionals and posting public notices.

Enlightenment, the series offers interesting and
stimulating presentations along with “heavy hors
d’oeuvres” (read: “dinner”). The October 30 presentation is The Secret Side of Mardi
Gras: Carnival Balls, 1870-1920 by Jen Atkins at the Beacon College Student Center in

Activities Fall Outing Features Mt. Dora Boat Tour
Our fall outing is scheduled for Thursday, November 7. It will consist of a trip to Mt.
Dora for a relaxing pontoon boat ride with Premier Boat Tours followed by a
Mediterranean lunch at the Olive Branch, a newer restaurant near the boat dock. After
lunch, we will drive a few blocks to see a home painted to look like Van Gogh's famous
painting, Starry, Starry Night. Those who may wish to stay and shop in Mt. Dora will
make that decision with their driver and the other passengers in the vehicle. We will
depart from the Colony Cottage Regional Recreation Center (near the pool) at 9:30 a.m.
The two-hour boat ride will begin at 11:00 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m. We will then take a
short walk to the restaurant.
The cost of the boat ride will depend on the number going. It will be $24 if we have 16 or
more participants; $25 if we have 11 to 15 participants. Each participant will pay her
own fare at the boat dock and may opt to tip the driver/guide upon leaving the boat.
Each participant will also cover the cost of her own lunch at the restaurant. Most entrees
run between $11 and $13. Each participant is also asked to give $5.00 to her driver to
help cover the cost of gasoline and use of the car.
To register for the trip, contract Kate Manion by email at [email protected] or by
phone at 352-689-2626. If you are willing to drive, you should also let Kate know and
tell her how many persons you can take in your vehicle. We will likely need between five
and six drivers.
Book Club
The book for our October 16 meeting is Little Fires Everywhere by
Celeste Ng. Set in a progressive suburb, the novel examines the
intertwined fates of the picture-perfect Richardson family and the
enigmatic mother and daughter who upend their lives. When old
family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese
American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the
town--and puts rule-follower Mrs. Richardson and artistic Mia on
opposing sides. The book explores the weight of secrets, the nature
of art and identity, and the ferocious pull of motherhood – and the
danger of believing that following the rules can avert disaster.

Speakers’ Bureau The Speakers’ Bureau is an idea in need of implementation. Its purpose is to advance the
branch’s recognition and branding initiative, and target audiences will be groups in and
around The Villages and high school and college graduating seniors.
Some preliminary work has been done -- for example, two PowerPoint slide shows are
close to ready and a new brochure is ready for use – but we are looking for a person to
coordinate the speaking engagements as well as speakers and speaking assistants.
