in 1988, following in the foot-

steps of his late father, John, a

    multiple champion at the track.

    Devils Bowl is largely

    switching from its traditional

    Sunday afternoon racing to

    Friday nights this season. There

will be a Sunday race, May 13,

    and motorcycle racing May 20.

    The speedway kicks off its

    Friday night racing series at

    7:30 p.m., May 25. The race will

    be sponsored by Peoples United

    Bank. The event will include

    extra-distance races for the

    Bond Auto Parts Modified and

    Late Model divisions.

    Friday night racing revs up

    and continues through the

month of June including a spe-

    cial 50-lap event for the

    Renegade division on June 15.

    Last year, Brian Hoar of

    Williston won the Spring Green

and went on to win his eighth

    ACT championship.

It was really cool winning at

Devils Bowl last year. I never

raced there when it was a dirt

track but we got the chance last

year and it was a lot of fun,

Hoar said. I love that theres

    another asphalt track in

Vermont. The fact that its only

an hour away from home makes

    it even more special.

    Devils Bowl is a flatter

track, and no one really knew

what to make of it before we

raced there, but ever since last

year we cant wait to get back,

said Hoar, who had to battle

with Craig Bushey for the lead

in last years race. I love the

track layout, and I had a great

race with Craig out front. Its a

very racy track, and the side-by-

    side racing is outstanding.

    Bushey, who will competing

    in Devils Bowls weekly

    NASCAR Whelen All-American

    Series weekly Late Model cham-

    pionship . Other locals expected

to take on the ACT outsiders

    include Devils Bowl champion

    Hunter Bates of Middlebury,

    Albany-Saratoga Speedway

    champion Dan Petronis of

    Mechanicville, NY, and 15 year-

    old top rookie contender Joey

    Laquerre of East Montpelier.

    ACT stars gunning for Hoar

    include New Hampshires

    Wayne Helliwell Jr. and Joey

    Pole Polewarczyk Jr., Maine

    youngsters Austin Theriault

    and Ben Ashline, and Jean-Paul

Cyr of Milton. Helliwell is the

    defending NASCAR New

    Hampshire State Champion,

    while Polewarczyk owns eight

    ACT victories. Theriault, 18, is

    a development driver for

    NASCAR Sprint Cup racer Brad

    Keselowski, and Ashline

    impressed with a drive from

27th to fifth in the Spring Green

as a rookie last year. Cyr is a

    seven-time ACT champion and

won the 1990 Pro Stock title on

    the former Devils Bowl

    Speedway clay.

    The American-Canadian

    Tours historic Spring Green

event begins at 1:30 p.m. Sunday,

May 6. General admission is $18

for adults, $15 for seniors (62+),

and free for children 12 and

    under.

    Devils Bowl Speedway is

located on Route 22A in West

Haven, Vt., six miles north of

Exit 2 on U.S. Route 4. For more
