I hope you all had a happy and comfortable winter, wherever you spent it. Summer is right around the corner and brings with it all the special events as well as the regular, easy lake life we all love. The board is requesting that dog owners discontinue the practice of taking your pets to the sand bar, but if you feel you must, the local leash laws will apply - (287.262). Any dog over the age of 6 months must be on a leash when off your private property. If anyone wants to file a complaint about dogs running loose on the sandbar or anywhere else, call dispatch @ 345-9911. Please provide either a name, location, or boat MC#. The first complaint will be a warning. After that, each incident will cost the dog owner $182.00. Another concern the board has is the yard waste site behind the boat launch. This area is for grass and leaves only--nothing else. It is also only for residents' use, not the commercial lawn care people. If you hire someone to take care of your yard, they should take the yard waste somewhere else. If this area continues to be misused, the board will be forced to close it perma- nently. We have three openings for board positions up for election this year. This is your chance to further improve our Great Lake experience by serving as a board member. If you are inter- ested, please have a 50 word or less resume to Carol in the office by May 2nd. I look forward to seeing all our summer residents this spring, and continuing the good ex- periences we all treasure. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

We see the activities taking place, such as the Poker Runs, Winterfest, Fun Day, Square Dance, the Pig Roast and many others. A group of volunteers are working to make these events possible. We always need host houses for the winter and summer Poker Runs. The Winter Poker Run has grown and now we need 10 host houses and people to open up the cards. We al-ways need volunteers to cook and serve food for any event that has food. Set up and tear down is also a big part of most events. Putting together flyers, sending out emails, selling tickets, manning the games, and building the games are just some of the things that have to done. So much is done behind the scene.

Volunteers make all of our events possible.

This is simply a HUGE THANK YOU to each and everyone of you that make all of our events the success that they are.

Sincerely, Joannie VanAntwerp

Michigan Leash Law

Owners must restrain their dogs on leashes when dogs are not on their owner's property. Dogs over six months must be registered and wear a collar at all times. Additionally, female dogs in heat must be kept on their owner's premises or restrained on a leash.

TRAPPING

When the cold winds blew winter in early, they

sealed off the lake's bays and coves with a sheet of

ice. That brought muskrat trapping to a halt. In all I

took 37 critters from our lake. Last year there were

two of us trapping and we had a combined total of

about 100. Some of this years complaints I did not

get to.

However, DNR Officer Brian Olson has assured me

he will issue a permit to begin trapping again once

the ice melts. Officer Olson is one of the C.O.s who

patrols Lake Ogemaw during the summer.

He told me, in the spirit of cooperation, he would

like to meet with LOSRA residents to discuss issues

relating to our lake. He also said that shooting at

animals in the water is not only illegal but also a

danger to other residents. If you have problems

with animals it is a neighborhood problem. All ani-

mals have a territory and it extends beyond your

yard.

I will continue removing problem animals through-

out the year under permit where necessary. Trap-

ping animals during the winter when the furs are

prime, this is a free service.

Trash Bins/Trashcans:

Many residents around the lake have metal wire trash bins for trash. Residents may not know that any trash bin with openings larger than 1/2" will allow critters (skunks, raccoons, opossums and even crows) to dive into the smorgasbord of garbage in your trash bin. If your trash bin is lined with chicken wire, you might as well leave the lid wide open, as the openings in chicken wire are large enough for critters to invade your trash bin. If you plan on building a trash bin, the best liner to use is hardware cloth, which is actually a wire mesh with 1/4" square holes. Most hardware stores carry this item with various widths and from 5’ to 25’ long. And remember to keep your trash bins clear of loose trash, as Waste Management is not required to clean out your trash bin unless the trash is bagged.

If you are using trashcans instead of a wire trash bin, the trashcan should have some sort of a locking mechanism on the lid. Trash cans put out on Sunday night are prime targets for the critters of the night. And it’s never a good idea to leave trash bags at the roadside overnight. If you do, and the critters make a mess, you will need to clean it up, as Waste Management is not required to clean up.

Dave donated his time and equipment to retrieve a pump and do a visual check of the over flow pipe to see if there appeared to be any problems.

Fish Committee

Welcome to spring, I hope. It will probably be June before all the snow drifts and ice are gone.

Get that fishing equipment checked. Get those reels oiled, new line, and check those rod guides. A crack in those guides can fray line quite easily. Don't lose a nice fish because of old line or frayed guides.

On October 26th, the stocking of fish took place. The Fish Committee stocked: 1000 Wall-eye, 6" to 8"; 500 Walleye, 7" to 8"; and 800 Crap-pies, 5" to 6".

The first event of 2014 will be the Adult Fishing Contest that will start on Saturday, May 24th and run until 9 p.m. on Friday, August 29th. Entry fee will be $5.00, and can be paid at Ka-Jac's, Lake Ogemaw Marina, or the LOSRA club house.

The next event is the 20th. Annual Kid's Fishing Derby on June 7th. You can register at the club house before June 7th or the morning of the 7th at 8:00 a.m. The Derby runs from 9 a.m. until 12 noon. Lunch and awards start at noon at the club house. All sons, daughters, grandkids, nieces, nephews, and friends are invited. A dues current LOSRA member must register the "fisherkids".

Should I fertilize the lawn? All property owners should understand the environmental considerations of their lawn maintenance activities. Fertilizing your lawn can provide that Arnold Palmer lawn, but what you put on your lawn can be detrimental to our lake. The three main components of turf fertilizers are nitro-gen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) (potash). A fertilizer labeled 20-5-15 contains 20 percent nitrogen, 5 percent phosphorus, and 15 percent potash by weight. Nitrogen is part of the chlorophyll molecule, which gives plants their green color and is involved in creating food for the plant through photosynthesis and is an essential nutrient for all plant growth. Phosphorus is a common component and an essential nutrient for plants. However, when too much phospho-rus makes its way into the lake, it promotes the rapid growth of weeds and algae and decreases water clar-ity. Consider this – 1 lb. Of phosphorus in runoff can result in 500 POUNDS of algae growth! Decaying algae also depletes oxygen in the water, so that fish can no longer thrive. It's important for lakefront property owners and resi-dents to minimize phosphorus input into the lake. The last component in fertilizer is potassium (potash). Potassium helps regulate plant metabolism and affects water pressure regulation inside and outside of plant cells. It is important for good root development. So when spring yard maintenance rolls around, con-sider the impact you will have on our lake by choosing a

fertilizer with "zero or low" phosphorus content. The easiest solution to this? Buy the fertilizer offered through LOSRA! It has 0 phosphorus and comes in a 50 lb. bag.

AQUATIC PESTICIDE TREATMENT NOTICE

This notice is to inform you that the Lake Ogemaw Summer Resort Association has contracted with this company for aquatic management services. We are planning to treat the area waters with herbicides and/or algaecides for the control of aquatic nuisance plants and/or algae.

Please be aware that only pesticides that have been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency, Michigan Department of Agriculture and the MDEQ (Michigan Department of Environmental Quality) are being used. These pesticides are being applied in dosages approved by the MDEQ and as applied are not harmful to fish, wildlife or pets. A permit from the MDEQ will have been secured prior to any pesticide applications.

Please watch the shoreline for the posting of YELLOW signs, which will indicate the day of treat-ment, exact pesticides used and the water use restrictions depending on the pesticides used. In the event of an additional pesticide application, a second sign will be posted outlining new water use restrictions.

Pesticides are applied as either liquid or granular formulations. Liquids are surface sprayed or sub-surface injected depending on treatment strategies and/or weather conditions. Granular formulations are applied with broadcast spreaders.

APRIL 2014

LONG TERM WATER USE RESTRICTIONS

Renovate (triclopyr): Do not use treated water for irrigation for 120 days following application. As an alternative to waiting 120 days, treated water may be used for irrigation once the triclopyr level in the treatment area is determined to be non-detectable by laboratory analysis. Water sam-ples will be taken approximately 3 weeks after treatment. Go to www.aquaticservicesinc.info LAKES page to find out when the water use restrictions have been lifted. There is no restriction on use of water from the treatment area to irrigate established grasses.

Sonar (fluridone): Do not use treated water for irrigation for 30 days. As an alternative to waiting 30 days, treated water may be used for irrigation once the fluridone level in the treatment area is determined to be 5 parts per billion by laboratory analysis. Water samples will be taken approxi-mately 2 weeks after treatment.

Go to www.aquaticservicesinc.info LAKES page to find out when the water use restrictions have been lifted.

Navigate (2,4-D): Do not use water from treated areas for irrigating plants or mixing sprays for agricultural or ornamental plants, unless and approved assay indicates the 2,4-D concentration is 100 ppb (or less), or only growing crops and non-crops areas labeled for direct treatment with 2,4-D will be affected. Water samples will be taken approximately 3 weeks after treatment if the treatment area is within 250’ from shore. Go to www.aquaticservicesinc.info LAKES page to find out when the water use restrictions have been lifted. There is no restriction on use of water from the treatment area to irrigate established grasses.

2,4-D (offshore): Shoreline postings with 2,4-D (offshore) means the treatment area is located more than 250' from shore. Follow the water use restrictions posted if you are irrigating within the 2, 4-D treatment area. Follow all other water use restriction times as they are posted.

POSTINGS

Notice of all pesticide applications shall be posted prior to each application. Notices shall be posted along the shoreline with 81/2 x 11 inch YELLOW posters. They shall indicate the day of treatment, permit number, contact information, exact pesticides used and the water use restric-tions (swimming, irrigation and fishing) depending on the pesticides used. In the event of addi-tional pesticide applications, additional notices shall be posted outlining new water use restric-tions.

Some postings may be done in advance. How many days in advance will vary between lakes. There is an ADVANCED POSTING box on the poster that will be checked in the event of an ad-vanced posting. If the box is not checked, the application will be made on the same day as the posting. Posters will be attached to trees, posts, decks, docks and other vertical objects along the immediate shoreline. However, riparian property owners who choose not to have the posters af-fixed to their personal property may have alternative postings. Within 30 feet of the immediate shoreline, you may supply your own bright YELLOW painted supporting device (stake) at least 30 inches tall and the posters will be stapled to that device. Go to www.aquaticservicesinc.info the SCHEDULES page to find out when the pesticide applications are to be made.
