The Lake Almanor area is rich in history. The California Maidu Indian tribe named the lake site “oy-ding-koyo” or Big Meadows. The Maidu called Big Meadows home for centuries. In the 1840’s settlers traveling west on the Emigrant Trail settled in the meadow. Stories were told of gold and of the bountiful valley and the settlers’ population exploded. In 1901, Julius Howells visited Big Meadows. Mr. Howells envisioned a reservoir in the meadow to generate electrical power for the growing Sacramento Valley population. On Howells’s return to San Francisco, he was met by two brothers that showed an interest in investing in the project. Edwin and Guy C. Earl funded the project and formed the Western Power Company. In 1914, the first dam was completed. The reservoir was named “Almanor” by Guy C. Earl after his three daughters Alice, Martha and Elinor. Western Power Company grew into the Great Western Power Company which eventually was acquired by Pacific Gas and Electric Company that operates the lake today. The

original dam was replaced 1926-1927. That dam is still in place and is named Canyon Dam. Lake Almanor is 13 miles long and 6 miles wide, roughly 52 square miles of beautiful water and it stores1.3 million acre feet of water. The Hexagenia hatch happens on the west side of Lake Almanor. The west side of the lake is shallower than the east side of the lake, simply due to the fact that the west side was Big Meadows. The east side is mostly rock with the lake sitting in a canyon. The west side of Lake Almanor stretches from Canyon Dam at the south end of the lake to Goose Bay at the north. The majority of the Hexagenia hatch happens between Canyon Dam and Almanor West. The majority of the fishing is conducted at “Gerital Cove” at Canyon Dam or at the Plumas Pines Resort area.

I was locking the front door to the Powell Fly Shop, in Chico one evening in June. A

Ford truck screeched to a stop in front of me. Blue smoke billowed into the air and

the engine smelled like it had just run the Daytona 500. The driver’s door flew

opened and an older man jumped out and said, “I was at the lake last night and the

hatch was on, I need some Hexes”. I calmly unlocked the door to the shop, and he

leaped towards the fly bins. He looked at me and said, “I’ll take them all”. That was

more than twenty years ago and anglers still go crazy for the “Hex Hatch”.

8

Page 10: Lake almanor hex hatch 1

The Hexagenia nymph burrows half-moon tunnels into the mud floor. Throughout the Hexagenia life cycle the nymphs leave the burrows to molt and grow. The Hexagenia nymph returns back to its burrow until it is mature. Once the Hexagenia nymph is mature, the nymphs start to swim to the surface of the lake to hatch. The Hexagenia nymphs are available to the fish for food all year long. Only in late June and early July of each year do the fish migrate to the west side to gorge themselves on the Hexagenia. Smallmouth Bass, Rainbows, Brown Trout and Salmon all enjoy the feast. You

never know exactly what is going to grab the fly. For the best success anglers who fish the “Hex Hatch” on Lake Almanor must fish from a boat. Drift boats, prams, large fishing boats, pontoon boats and float tubes are used. The choice of many guides, me included is pontoons boats or float tubes. These boats are easily launched at the many launch areas on the west side. The smaller boat can be easily maneuvered around the lake to best maximize the hatch. Any 9 foot rod for a 4-6 weight line will work quite well. In fact, two rods are

9

Lance Gray Photo

Page 11: Lake almanor hex hatch 1

needed, one for a floating line and one for a sinking line. The rods must be matched with a quality reel along with a good drag system. Remember folks, we measure these fish in pounds not inches. The best floating line by far is the Rio Outbound Short. This line is a designed to cast flies at great distances. The second rod is rigged with a sinking line. The Cortland Camouflage Intermediate line is hard to beat. This line disappears in the water and can be fished shallow and deep using the countdown method. The Hexagenia nymphs will start

the slow migration to the surface early in the day. Nymphs in deeper water take longer than nymphs in shallower water. The surface hatch commonly happens right at sun down. It is amazing emergence. Anglers should start to fish the hatch around 4-6pm in the evening. Start fishing in deeper water, 20 to 25 feet deep water with a sinking line. Work the water column by using the countdown method until you find the fish. As the sun starts to set move closer to the bank into 10 to 15 feet of water. Work the sinking line setup in the top 5 feet of the water column or until you find fish. Fish the sinking line until the fish start to show activity on the surface.

The sinking setup will still produce fish

but, at this time I usually switch over to

the floating line and fish the Milt’s

Hexagenia Paranymphs, Gray’s

Stillborns and Milt’s Paradrakes. There

is nothing better than taking a big fish

on a dry fly. The fish become selective

at times, adding life to the dry flies with

a little twitch here and there will pay off

quickly. Having two flies on each rod

setup is a must. For example on the

Cortland Camouflage Intermediate line,

I will fish a Gray’s Hexagenia nymph

size 6-8 imitation with a Gray’s TS 2 BH

Bugger Hex size 8 for the trailer. I use

the countdown method for these flies.

The countdown method is very easy to

use. After you cast, simply count, for

each second you count the fly will sink

roughly 2 inches in the water. If you

count to 20, the flies are at the 40 inch

mark. When you reach the depth you

like simply start the retrieve. A munch

retrieve (hand over hand) or using small

three to four inch strips are the best

retrieves.

On the Rio Outbound Short, fish Milt’s Hexagenia Paranymph size 6 with a Gray’s Hexagenia Stillborn size 6-8 as the trailer. This set up is fantastic. The Milt’s Hexagenia Paranymph acts like the indicator for the Gray’s Hexagenia Stillborn. The stillborn sits slightly underneath the surface. The best tactic

that I have found to make these flies act as real as possible is the “Twitch & Sit” method. As soon as the flies land on the water give them a twitch and then let them sit motionless. Give the line a slight twitch just enough to make the flies move. Let it sit again and repeat the process. The fish usually strike as soon as you conduct a twitch. Fishing the Hexagenia hatch on Lake Almanor, the anglers must be conscious with the Hexagenia life cycle and patterns to match. Flies have been designed to match all areas of the life cycle. Nymphs, paranymphs, stillborns, cripples and paradrake dry flies are needed during the Hexagenia hatch. All these flies are designed to imitate the natural and the natural’s movements. Fishing Hexagenia nymphs before the surface hatch starts using the countdown method is the majority of the evening. Start fishing Milt’s Hexagenia Paranymphs size 6 or Gray’s Hexagenia Stillborns size 6-8 during the beginning of the hatch. Slowly move to the adult imitation, the Milt’s Hexagenia Paradrake in size 6-8 at dark. Fish will feed at each segment of the life cycle. At any time the fish can key on one step of the life cycle. The anglers who can adapt to the change are the anglers who catch fish. I asked Lincoln Gray who runs, Stillwater Fly Fishing Adventures, a company that conducts a fly fishing school on Lake Almanor and Tom Maumoynier owner of, the Lake 15

Page 17: Lake almanor hex hatch 1

Almanor Fly Fishing Company, a shop located in Chester, how they fish Lake Almanor during the “Hex Hatch”. Lincoln recommended a 9 foot 5wt rod with a 5wt Cortland Clear Camouflage Intermediate line attached to a good solid reel that will handle long runs and short burst. Leader attached is a 71/2 foot 3x Frog Hair leader with a Gray’s TS Hex Bugger size 8. The retrieve used by Lincoln is a munch retrieve (hand over hand or J.Fair style) or slow strips three to four at a time and then let the fly drop in the water column. Letting the fly fall after the strips can result in jolting strikes. All of Lincoln’s retrieves are slow - very, very, slow. Tom recommends an 8 ½ to 9’ 4wt fly rod with a reel to match loaded with a shooting head type 4 set up. Leaders are 15 feet long tapered to a 5x tippet attached is a marabou leech size 6. The retrieve is slow, two to three inch strips, gradually picking up speed, a pause and then start stripping again. Fishing the Hexagenia hatch late in the evenings on Lake Almanor the angler must be prepared for anything. Two years ago while I was guiding the lake, we had a severe thunderstorm and the wind come up very quickly. The lake turned to white caps rapidly and I had my guest beach their boats a quarter of a mile down the shoreline from the launch area for safety. Wearing Personal Floatation Devices is a necessity. I fish from a Pontoon boat so I have both

oars and fins. I recommend you use tethers on your fins and oars. There is nothing worse than losing a fin or oar. I pack a good rain jacket with a hood; have plenty of water, a small snack and two lights. Having a light is very important. Normally during the Hexagenia Hatch getting off the water around 10pm is common. You need light to see what you are doing, tying on flies, releasing fish or simply securing your rods so you can head in. You also need a light for other to see you. Light can be seen effortless at great distances on water. The ability to see and be seen is good practice for water safety. So make sure you have the equipment on the boat, float tube or Pontoon boat it is vital.

When You Go Lake Almanor is very easy to find. Highway 89 runs right along the west side of the lake. From Sacramento go north on Interstate Five until the Highway 99/Highway 70 intersection. Go north on Highway 99/Highway 70 until it splits. Stay on Highway 70 towards Quincy, at the intersection of Highway 89 turn north. Continue on Highway 89 and you will cross Canyon Dam. Take a right off Hwy 89 to the boat launch area, there in front of you will be “Gerital Cove”. From the San Francisco Bay area take Hwy 80 to Sacramento and follow the above directions. If you like travelling Interstate five, drive to Red Bluff and take Highway 36 east. Highway 36 and Highway 89 becomes the same highway for several miles. Continue on Highway 36/Highway 89 to the intersection of Highway 36 and Highway 89 south. You will be at the north end of the west side of Lake Almanor. Travel roughly 4 miles south to Almanor West and the Plumas Pines Resort area. Before you go it is always wise to get up to date road and fishing information.

The Lake Almanor setup is for both sinking and floating line presentations. We use

two flies per rig. The sinking leader will have a combination of a Hex Nymph with a

Lincoln’s TS Bugger or vice versa. For the floating line presentation the same rig is

used. We rig the floating or emergering flies with the dry fly in front with the emerger

or stillborn in the rear, Milt’s Pardrake with Lincoln’s Stillborn behind it.

After many variations of the Hexagenia

nymphs being tied over the last four

decades, we have found that this pattern

is the best.

This pattern incorporates all the aspects

of the natural nymph. The fly is built

with a long slender body that has a great

swimming motion. With a large tapered

thorax combined with the big dark eyes

it mimics the natural so well. The

material needed to construct this fly is

nominal and has nothing flashing. Just

works!

Carol’s Cafe`

My absolute favorite eatery while at L.

Almanor. Can you say PIES? I'm talking

about homemade pies like your mom or

grandma used to make. When we are at

L. Almanor in late June for the Hex hatch,

we start off each day at Carol's having

breakfast and pie. Forget bacon and

eggs. I usually just have a slice of every

type of pie on display. If you’re favorite

pie isn't there, no problem. Just tell Carol

what kind of pie you want and she will

have it ready for you the next

morning. That goes a looonnnggggg way

toward customer service. Besides the

"out of this world pies", Carol's Cafe does

provide your basic breakfast fare. The

atmosphere is cozy. The waitresses treat

you like family. As I get older, I have

come to appreciate quality home style

cooking and service. That's the signature

for Carol's cafe - "The Prattville

Tradition". Tim Loomis – Fly Fishing Representative –

Kopper Kettle

Before taking in Tehama County’s limitless

fisheries, do yourself a favor and check out

the Kopper Kettle in Chester. World famous

good old fashioned country kitchen, with

biscuits and gravy, so big that it takes a man

and small boy to eat it. You will walk away

with your belly full all day.
