LAGOS’ Spring 2006 StyleGuide has been designed as a sales and informational toolfor all of our valued customers. This StyleGuide has been designed to replace the Fall 2005StyleGuide and illustrates everything in LAGOS’ current Spring 2006 assortment, organizedby collection. It is also a great sales tool and can be used to show your customers what iscurrently available from LAGOS. We also hope this will be a great tool for you to use whenmerchandising our products and that it helps to show how all of the pieces work together.The Appendix Section in the back of this guide features a host of practical informationthat is informative and can aid in selling LAGOS products. I hope you find it useful.

Steven Lagos founded LAGOS in 1977 with the idea tocreate exquisite jewellery that offered luxury andsophistication to accentuate the modern woman’s lifestyle.Today, LAGOS is one of the most successfully marketedjewellery brands in America.

For over a quarter of a century, LAGOS has createdaward-winning collections with a classic signature style. Eachcollection is versatile and designed to create magnificentjewellery wardrobes inspired by an individual’s own personalstyle.

The LAGOS story highlights two individual talents:Steven Lagos and Ann King; a partnership born from achance meeting at a trade show in New York City in 1983.Steven and Ann, each successful artists in their own right,fused their visions and created a company that is shaping thedefinition of jewellery design in the new century.

At the age of 17, Steven Lagos learned the tradition andconcepts of the jewellery trade from an 85-year-old Russianmaster. His mentor taught him the lessons of old worldcraftsmanship, while impressing upon him the importanceof working with only the highest quality materials. Today,these lessons and traditions are the cornerstone of allLAGOS products.

From the beginning of their partnership, Steven andAnn Lagos have contributed to each other’s jewellery linesartistically and strategically. Collaboratively, they introducedthe LAGOS Caviar™ Collection in 1984. The challenge wasto create a new jewellery category—one that would appeal toindividuals desiring the style and quality of fine jewellery, butat a more attractive price point. A ring from the Caviar Collection is shown above in one of the many steps of finishing that takes place to complete a piece of LAGOS jewellery. Itis estimated that each piece passes through human hands no less than 25 times prior to shipment to its final destination.

LAGOS has built a reputation in the industry for delivering thehighest quality hand-crafted jewellery to its customers. Boasting a state-of-the-art design studio that occupies over 30,000 square feet in Old CityPhiladelphia, LAGOS has created the ideal surroundings to meet andexceed the expectations of its customers as well as the industry at large.Employing the techniques of old-world craftsmanship and marryingthem with cutting edge technology, LAGOS has positioned itself as notonly an industry leader but as a pioneer in its field. People are drawn toLAGOS for its intricate detail and architecturally inspired designs andthey devotedly return for its renowned craftsmanship.

It all begins when designer Steven Lagos has an idea for a new piece.The idea first becomes real when a sketch is made. The drawing becomesthe blueprint from which the process begins in the New ProductDevelopment department with the model makers. At LAGOS, twodifferent types of model makers are utilized: old world-style carving withwax by an artisan’s hand and electronic rendering with the computer.Both techniques are integral in making the highest quality productpossible.

Once the wax model is completed, the process moves on and a metalmodel is created. This first step in the production process is called casting.The metal model is sandwiched between layers of rubber in a frame andis then vulcanized. The rubber mold is then cut open to reveal a hollowcavity in the impression of a piece of jewellery. This rubber mold is nowinjected with hot wax. After cooling, the wax is removed and attached towhat is referred to as a wax tree.

The wax tree goes through many steps, but for simplification we willhighlight the most integral steps only. The wax tree is inserted into acylindrical flask and investment, a type of plaster mixture, is poured into theflask in a liquid state and then solidifies.

Gemstones are being selected, matched, andinspected in the processing department.

Components are being assembled and sol-dered by hand in the jeweler’s shop.

An assembled piece of jewellery is beinghighlighted and brightly polished.

The original metal model is being extractedfrom the layers of rubber.

Wax models are being attached to the waxtree in preparation for casting.

Castings are cleaned and inspected to bereadied for the assembly stage.

The flask then goes into the burnout oven where a specifictemperature is reached in order to melt the wax and to once again leavea hollow cavity with the impression of our jewellery mold. Theinvestment is now prepared to receive the molten metal (the caster) thatwill later become a piece of LAGOS jewellery.

The caster is a computerized vacuum/pressure-assisted inductionmelting casting machine that is programmed to achieve the highestquality casting, involving twelve critical mixing and baking steps. Sterlingsilver granules have been meticulously weighed before being poured intothe cavity. Once they have been cast, it is cooled in water. The raw castingis then removed, weighed, and then sent to the processing department.

In the processing department all of the loose components areinventoried and stocked and are now ready to be picked for assembly andfinishing. Gemstones are also picked and inspected in this department.The bill of materials, a sort of recipe, for every LAGOS style is completed.

The next steps are cast cleaning and final assembly, which arecompleted in the jeweler’s shop. A multitude of hand steps are involvedto create the hundreds of different styles that LAGOS offers.Components are soldered together with the torch and are then oxidizedto achieve the special patina that is signature to LAGOS. At this timegemstones are hand set. The jewellery item is now sent back to theprocessing department for inspection and quality control.

Once the piece has passed four formal inspections it is ready to bepolished, both by hand and by machine. The last and most important stepis, of course, the final inspection. The piece is meticulously examined tomake certain of its perfection before it is shipped from LAGOS to you.

DO’S • Always keep your jewellery in the

LAGOS pouch when not being worn.• Wipe your jewellery with the provided

polishing cloth frequently.

DON’TS• Don’t wear silver jewellery in the

ocean—salt water speeds the oxidationprocess and can cause jewellery toblacken more quickly. (This will notaffect the jewellery; only the color.) Inthe event that blackening occurs, pleasereturn the item to your local area retailerfor refinishing or email Customer Serviceat [email protected]

• Don’t use silver cleaner on LAGOSjewellery as it will remove all of theoxidation and leave the piece looking flat.

• Don’t worry if you cannot restore yourpiece to it’s original lustre. Any piece thatcannot be cleaned at home to yoursatisfaction can be returned to LAGOSfor refurbishing and in most cases can bemade to look like new again. You simplypay postage and we’ll do the rest.

GEMSTONE CAREGemstones can get dirty. Often, soap and hand lotion can cover the gemstone with a film, dulling theluster. Gemstones can be cleaned using a slightly soapy solution (1 part Mr. Clean + 10 parts water).Dip your jewellery into this solution and scrub lightly using a soft toothbrush. Rinse under cool waterand repeat as needed. Ultrasonic cleaning is also acceptable.

LAGOS jewellery requires minimum care and will provide a lifetime of enjoyment.

CARING FOR LAGOS CAVIAR PRODUCTS

All LAGOS Caviar products are hand-craftedfrom 925 sterling silver and eighteen karatgold. As with all sterling silver, LAGOS silverwill tarnish. Not to worry; LAGOS has takensignificant steps to keep your jewellery lookingnew with minimum care.

You will notice that all of the recessedareas on your piece are already dark. This ispart of an antiquing process in which theserecessed areas are tarnished and is a deliberatefeature of the design. These darkened areasaccentuate the design, giving the piece addeddimension.

To care for your product simply use theprovided polishing cloth. The white innercloth contains our unique formula of preciousmetal cleaning agents and applies an anti-tar-nish barrier to your jewellery. The outer clothgently polishes and buffs your piece, resultingin an unsurpassed luster.

For optimum results, apply pressure as yougently rub the gold and silver with the whiteinner cloth. Notice that the tarnish is easilyremoved onto the cloth. This discoloration isnormal and acceptable. Discoloration does notchange the effectiveness of the cloth. Next,use the outer cloth to buff the piece to a high-er luster. Please note: Do not use the innerwhite cloth to clean pearls, opal, coral, orother soft gemstones. The outer cloth isacceptable for cleaning all surfaces.

When sending jewellery in for refurbishing, please make an itemized list and detailed notes as to thecondition of the piece (bent shank, gemstone chips, etc.) and desired work to be performed.

* Complementary refurbishing does not include replacing damaged gemstones. Damaged gemstones can bereplaced with estimates given upon request. Please specify if a gemstone requires replacement and anestimate is needed. All gemstones will be tightened during the refurbishing process.
