Letter from the President and Executive Director

who are recognized throughout the county as super achievers, taking the lead with creativity and ingenuity, ultimately bringing

innovative and exciting programs here to our Lafayette Library and beyond. Thanks to your support this past year, we continue to

invest in the success of the library, in our librarians, and in you, the community.

With gratitude,

Seth Hamalian Beth Needel

Board President Executive Director

LLLC Foundation Board of Trustees

Financial Report The fiscal strength of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation (LLLCF) comes from your continued support and

ongoing financial contributions. It is a reflection of the community’s belief in the need for the long-term sustainability of the

Lafayette Library and Learning Center.

On behalf of LLLCF’s Board of Trustees and its finance committee, it has been our privilege to steward your donations this past

fiscal year. We trust that our Board, working in consort with the community, will ensure that the LLLC will be funded for many

Thanks to your support the Lafayette Library and Learning

Center continues to thrive as the heart of the community.

Library patrons of all ages arrive seven-days-a-week ready to

browse for a book, study, attend a workshop, learn to sketch in

nature, listen to an author talk, learn to code, watch a film,

tinker with the latest technology, learn tai chi or a new language.

You can be proud of our all-star librarians and library aides

Distinguished Speaker Series

Great Programs

The Distinguished Speaker Series (DSS) continued to attract audi-

ences from around the Bay Area. DSS has established the LLLC’s

reputation as a regional destination for quality programming. The

list of notable speakers this year included Vanessa Diffenbaugh,

Christina Garcia, Joyce Maynard, Joe Di Prisco, and mystery writer

Cara Black.

Science Cafe Drones and the search for ET were among the Science

Café topics explored this year. The season ended with a

standing room only crowd for author Uwe Blesching,

The Cannabis Health Index, for a discussion on the uses

and health benefits of medical marijuana.

Dr. Christine Carter , sociologist and senior fellow at UC

Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, shared the

secret to achieving more by doing less to a sold out

Science Café in January. (pictured left)

Thank you to the Mervyn L. Brenner Foundation and the American Chemical Society for sponsoring Science Café.

DSS welcomed David Talbot to the LLLC for a reading of

his latest book The Devil’s Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the

CIA, and the Rise of America’s Secret Government.

Ayelet Waldman, New York Times best-selling author, read from

her latest book Love and Treasure. Waldman is pictured above

with Friends volunteer Casey Sasner, Foundation Executive

Director Beth Needel, Library General Manager Vickie Sciacca,

LLLCF Trustee Denise Zetterbaum and LLLC volunteer

Judy Kirkpatrick.

Fans of the Grateful Dead filled the Community Hall for

long time Dead chronicler Blair Jackson who was joined on

stage by songwriter/guitarist and co-author David Gans.

Children’s Book Fest

Great Programs

Glenn Seaborg Learning Consortium

The Glenn Seaborg Learning Consortium (GSLC) continued

to bring an array of valuable programs for all ages to the

LLLC. GSLC partner programs included visits from the

Oakland Zoo, author events with Saint Mary’s College, art

docents from the Oakland Museum, and a visit from the

Lawrence Hall of Science Wizard’s Lab.

The second Children’s Book Festival included favorite children’s

authors Gennifer Cheldenko, Thacher Hurd and Michael Slack.

Michael Slack designed the artwork for the festival and read

from his book Monkey Truck.

Above: Gennifer Choldenko, dressed in period costume,

engaged the audience in the storytelling of her new book,

Chasing Secrets, set in San Francisco in the early 1900’s.

Hurd at the Children’s Book Festival.

Glenn Seaborg Learning Consortium Partners: California

Shakespeare Theater, Chabot Space & Science Center,

Commonwealth Club of California, Greenbelt Alliance, John

F. Kennedy University, John Muir Health, Lindsay Wildlife

Experience, Oakland Museum of California, Oakland Zoo,

Saint Mary’s College, Institute of Governmental Studies,

Great Programs

MakerFest Once again, the LLLC Foundation collaborated with

Library staff to create a FREE summer MakerFest.

More than 400 “makers” enjoyed hands-on activities

ranging from high tech robotics and 3D printing to

DIY musical instruments and rockets.

Dogtown Downtown A spring rain did not stop dogs and their people

from attending Dogtown Downtown. The LLLC

Foundation partners with the Lafayette Chamber to

create this fun FREE community event. After a

parade from the Lafayette Plaza, the carnival like

event included the popular kissing booth,

demonstrations, dog adoption, and contests.

Artist Evie Michon teaches the folk art of Pysanky, Ukranian Egg decorating, entertaining “makers” of all ages.

Night at the Library Thank you to our generous sponsors, in-kind donors,

and the more than 250 guests who made Night at the Library a terrific fundraising success! Your support helped raise much needed funds for the Lafayette Library and Learning Center.

Our sincerest thanks to the many generous raffle and silent auction donors, and to the volunteers who generously gave their time and talent in support of this event.

While guests learned about the variety of resources and services offered at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, local restaurants served delicious small plate hors d’oeuvres and drinks.

Night at the Library guests explored the library stacks in search of creative book covers for Bookface (right), tinkered with library technology materials in a MakersLab (below), played Library trivia with a “mystery” author in the Literary Salon and discovered the DIY elements of beer making.
