President’s Column

With only four more LGS months left in the 2009/2010 season, we have desperately started to look for fresh – or not so fresh – faces to serve on next year’s LGS board. It is a lot of fun and you get to meet and hang out with a lot of great people. Moreover, you can do something to help and promote our profession. Julia Battle organized a successful Dino Dig at Broadmoor Elementary and reports that now 160 3rd graders all want to become geologists. That is great, but a little bit more than our department can handle at the moment. Thanks go to the many volunteers that made this event possible. You can check out pictures from the dig at our website at http://www.lgsweb.org and witness how much fun everyone had. Get in contact with Julia if you are in-terested in helping out in the future. We are planning a one-day field trip to the Jennings oil field, Texas En-ergy Museum, and Spindletop/Gladys City on Saturday, May 1. The bus leaves at 8:00 am! The cost is $60, which includes bus, lunch, guidebook, and museum fees. This is in conjunction with the Petroleum History Institute Symposium, which starts April 30 in the Hilton on W. Pinhook. The sympo-sium is co-chaired by Jeff Spencer, who gave a presentation here last Fall, and King Munson. The GCAGS meeting this year will be in San Antonio October 10-12, and I am planning on enjoying a good time at the Riverwalk. The abstract dead-line has been moved back a couple of weeks to February 15th – there is still time! Tim Bennett has organized the golf tournament. It is scheduled for Friday May 7th at the Wetlands Golf Course. Entry forms and sponsorship requests are available on our website and in the LGS Bulletin. This month’s speaker is Jim Martin from the South Dakota School of Mines and Adjunct Professor of our department. Jim is internationally known for his exciting work on fossils from Antarctica amongst many other places and will give us a talk about his adventures on the ice. In closing, I would like to mention that despite the current climate of state funding cuts our UL Geology department is at the moment not on the cutting block. We have been success in increasing enrollment and graduation rates at both the undergraduate and graduate levels despite decreasing financial sup-port and frozen travel and supply budgets. I am looking for better times ahead! Hope to see you at the meeting. Carl

FEBRUARY LUNCHEON PRESENTATION

“Giant Fossil Reptiles from the Late Creta-ceous of Antarctica: Their Interpretative

Role in Climate and Dispersal”

James E. Martin UL-Lafayette Department of Geology and South Dakota School of Mines and Tech-

nology Museum of Geology

Abstract Recent expeditions to the southernmost continent have re-sulted in discoveries of fossil reptiles, including mosasaurs, ple-siosaurs, and dinosaurs. Weather, distances, equipment, and lim-ited personnel made recovery of these fossil reptiles exceedingly difficult. High winds, ice, and snow nearly stopped the recovery, but numerous specimens provided important glimpses into the Age of Dinosaurs on the Antarctic Peninsula. A variety of mosa-saurs and plesiosaurs indicate, that even in the marine realm, en-demism occurred during the Late Cretaceous, approximately 65 to 70 million years ago. The environment in which these fossils were entombed was a shallow embayment in which numerous baby and juvenile marine reptiles lived until they could face the dangers of the open ocean. Volcanism appears to have played a significant role in the deaths and preservation of many of these reptiles. In addition to the marine reptiles, dinosaur remains were washed into the shallow sea. One dinosaur, a carnivorous type, exhibits very primitive features, suggesting that Antarctica served as a refugium for some reptiles. However, a hadrosaur indicates that these herbivorous dinosaurs dispersed from North America through South America to Antarctica. This dispersal may also explain how marsupial mammals derived from North America may have eventually dispersed to Australia before the continents drifted apart.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Geological Society

60th Annual Convention

October 10-12, 2010 San Antonio, Texas

Hosted by the South Texas Geological Society

Welcome back to San Antonio! Our theme this year is Weather-ing the Cycles”—a challenge that resource geologists certainly have faced and overcome in the past! How do we weather the economic cycles? We… • Network with our community • Experience the latest technology in the technical exhibition • Take a course or a trip and grow new and diverse skills • Listen to special presentations on strategies to endure and

prosper during an economic downtime and prepare for the inevitable rebound.

By celebrating our successes, facing our challenges, and learn-ing from the research results of our peers, we are paid back many fold by sharing ideas and experiences among our profes-sional community. So come and share your experiences! Sug-gest a session topic, present an oral paper or a poster, learn about the latest ideas and technologies in our field. Come to San Antonio and enjoy the Gulf’s own geoscience convention!

Please visit www.gcags2010.com for information on proposed technical sessions and how to submit an abstract.

Abstract deadline: 15 February 2010
