October

Special No 2

For months we’ve been hearing that

the UK’s finances need to be sorted

out, and this week we’ve found out

what it means in terms of funding cuts.

But how this affects local services is up

to the Labour-run Council.

So we should be told why the Labour

Mayor in Lewisham has decided that

important local facilities like Crofton

Park and New Cross libraries should

close, when he could easily cut the

number of councillors he has in his

cabinet and save enough money to

keep libraries open.

According to the council, who’s in his

cabinet is up to the Mayor, and cutting

the number down to the legal

minimum could save over £130,000 a

year. He even decided to increase the

number this year - more non-jobs for

more Labour politicians! - even though

he’s been planning over £60m cuts to

services since before Christmas!

It’s definitely time for a change:

Ladywell needs a proper local

champion and not another

Labour jobsworth or

someone from a small

party with no influence

 just when we need

a bigger voice!

A blast from the past - Labour candidatebacked demolition of Ladywell Pools!Ladywell residents have been

surprised to learn that thecandidate Labour have chosen

to represent them in the by-

election on 4 November voted

to demolish their local

swimming pool and leisure

centre a few years ago! This

valuable sports facility, enjoyed

by thousands of adults and

school children, was threatened

with closure because of the

Mayor's determination to

build a new secondary schoolon the site.

Thankfully, through a huge

campaign by residents, civic

groups and local politicians, led

by Save Ladywell Pools

campaigner Max Calo, the Pools

were saved despite the fierce

attempts by Labour councillors

to bring it down.

How the NewsShopper

reported the defeat of the

Labour councillors who wantedto demolish Ladywell Pools

Like many mothers of teenage sons, I

always get a little worried when my boys

are home late, so I can symathise with

those parents who have spoken to me

about this issue on the doorstep. Residents

of Viney Road in particular have raised

concerns about poor street lighting and the

lack of police patrols after a recent

mugging. I have spoken to the Ladywell

police Safer Neighbourhoods Team to see

if we can make safer streets a local priority.

I want tomake suremy teenagesons feel safe on the

streets

The need for safer streets

has been raised by local

people during the campaign.
