It is affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University and re-accredited in the third cycle once again with Grade ‘A’ by NAAC, CGPA 3.44 on a 4-point scale in the year 2013. It was awarded the status of College with Potential for Excellence by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi in the X plan and has sustained it in the XI and XII plan also. Its challenging curriculum blended with relevant Academic Programmes, Co-curricular activities, Exposure Programmes and a well-developed student support system have placed the college at the forefront in the field of higher education. ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Lady Doak College is one of the leading autonomous colleges located in the city of Madurai, South India. Ms. Katie Wilcox who had a vision and fervour for women’s education founded the college in the year 1948 at a time when there was no other institution for higher education exclusively for women in Madurai. It is affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University and re-accredited in the third cycle once again with Grade ‘A’ by NAAC, CGPA 3.44 on a 4-point scale in the year 2013. It was awarded the status of College with Potential for Excellence by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi in the X plan and has sustained it in the XI and XII plan also. Its challenging curriculum blended with relevant Academic Programmes, Co-curricular activities, Exposure Programmes and a well-developed student support system have placed the college at the forefront in the field of higher education. The college currently offers 24 undergraduate, 14 postgraduate and 9 M.Phil., programmes and Madurai Kamaraj University has recognized 6 Departments as Research centres. At present, there are 4345 women students studying in the Departments of Humanities, Sciences, Commerce and Business Administration amongst which 40% are first generation learners. The curriculum is structured to meet the future challenges of this fast changing world, ensuring dynamic and purposeful learning.

Lady Doak College has been functioning as an Autonomous College since 1978. The alumnae of our college hold prestigious positions in India and abroad, making vital contribution in their respective work-spots. Ours is one of the first few Arts and Science Colleges in the State of Tamil Nadu, which has initiated an international student exchange programme for credit transfer.

Language Lab is equipped with fifty virtual desktop computers connected to a centralized server. Orell-Interactive language learning software is also installed. It provides the platform for Technology-Integrated Language Learning and enhancement of the Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing Skills.

Centre for Communication and Multimedia

With the advent of modern information technology, the involvement of multimedia in higher education has become an inevitable trend. The Centre for Communication and Multimedia offers an avenue to use the modern information technology. Photographic and video graphic equipment, projectors, microphones, interactive boards, document camera and scanners are available.

Multimedia Theatres

There are two well-equipped Multimedia Theatres one of which is also equipped with Telepresenter, Presentation Production Server and Lifesize Clearsea Team 220, Four way (3+1) interacting, Full HD Multipoint Control Unit (MCU) and dual Mic Pods multi-conferencing client for video conferencing with high speed (upto 100 Mbps) internet lease line. The

available hardware can capture and organize storage and retrieval of digital lessons (digital repositories) with facilities for web streaming and live streaming.

The lab is equipped with ten desktop computers with video capture, editing and internet connectivity. HD Professional Video Camera and Professional DSLR Camera facilities are available for the students of the Short term courses and workshops on Photography, and Documentary Film Making. E-content material is also developed.

A sound proof studio for multi-track recording HD video work bench with Final Cut Pro to prepare E-content and quality multimedia documentation for college projects and activities.

INTEGRATED CURRICULAR MODEL

The academic programmes at Lady Doak College are designed to provide a holistic education in the respective disciplines and in areas of interest across disciplines such that students will be able to benefit from a customised portfolio of subjects (CBCS) according to individual abilities and preferences. The mandatory courses are geared towards building a strong foundation in the core areas of discipline and values. The choices made from a wide variety of elective and interdisciplinary courses allow for both specialization and diversification. In the final year of her degree programme, the student undertakes a capstone project which is a multifaceted learning experience in the form of ‘life frontier engagement’ with the community wherein the student is expected to put all her academic experience to understand and benefit the community at large.

Part IV • Core Communication Skills, Environmental Elective, Non-Major Electives including Basic Tamil for students who do not take Tamil as Part I and Theory Courses – ‘Organisation and Societal Services’ in NCC, National Integration and Personality Development for the NCC cadets who were in NCC in semesters I & II, Vocational Courses and Value-Based Courses

Part V • Extension Programmes – National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme, Rangering, Youth Red Cross, Library Service Programme, LDC Eco Brigade, Red Ribbon Club, Physical Education – Athletic Group/Band

Completing the requirements in Parts I, II, III, IV and V is mandatory for qualifying for a degree.

EXTRA CREDIT COURSES (SEMESTER II TO VI)

• Self-Learning Courses (SLC): Students can register in specially designed self-learning courses offered by any department (one per semester) and earn extra credits subject to her obtaining a minimum of 60% in the previous semester/s.

• Successful completion of the mandatory comprehensive annual eAssessment earns 2 credits.

• MOOCs: Students can take any course from any reputed University subject to the

approval of the Deans of Academic Affairs before commencement of the course and earn extra credits based on its intensity and duration after successful completion based on the approval of the Controller of Examinations.

• Part V: Students can register for an additional year of Part V beyond the

mandatory one year.
