La Costa Welcomes New Vice President & General ManagerPlease join us in extending a warm Southern California welcome to new Vice President and General Manger, Paul McCormick. McCormick comes to La Costa from Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas, where he served as Vice President and Managing Director for three years. He brings more than 23 years of extensive resort, club, and golf experience and has been a respected leader within KSL Resorts for more than 12 years.

Before joining Barton Creek, he served as Vice President and General Manager of La Quinta Resort & Club and PGA West, where he oversaw 1,000 hotel rooms and condos, nine golf courses, two extensive private Club operations, real estate and brokerage offices, a full-service spa, and many food and beverage and retail outlets.

Over the years, he has served as Special Projects Director at La Costa Resort & Spa, Vice President and General Manager of Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in northern Michigan. He also worked in management positions at Grove Park Inn Resort in Asheville, NC, Luxor Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV, Grand Hyatt Waliea Resort & Spa in Maui, Hyatt Regency Waikoloa Resort & Spa on the Big Island, Hawaii, and Hyatt Regency Waikiki on Oahu.

Originally from North Tonawanda, New York, a suburb of Niagara Falls, McCormick received his bachelor’s degree in Hotel, Restaurant, and Casino Management from the University of Las Vegas. After graduating, he moved to Hawaii with Hyatt Resorts before joining KSL Resorts in 1998.

The First Family of La CostaBy, Natalie Pittsford

Immediately upon entering the home of Irving and Muriel Roston, the “first family of La Costa,” I was struck by the hospitality and graciousness of the couple. After 65 years of marriage, you can still see their love for each other, their family, and the life that they built together at La Costa.

Irving Roston was a general contractor in Los Angeles in 1962 when he received a phone call inviting him to Las Vegas to discuss a dream that would eventually become La Costa Resort & Spa. Roston was contracted by the four original partners, Merv Adelson, Mo Dalitz, Irwin Molasky, and Allard Roen to help realize their dream.

When Irving Roston came to La Costa in 1962, El Camino Real Boulevard was a two lane road. Roston negotiated with the city to erect a sign on the freeway for La Costa Avenue, singlehandedly creating a public portal to Southern California’s playground. While ground-breaking commenced for La Costa Resort, Irving Roston began to create the community which would become the heart of La Costa, building 45 homes neighboring the 2,700 acres dedicated for the resort.

As a general partner with Adelson, Dalitz, Molasky, and Roen, Roston oversaw the construction of the Club and the original 18-hole golf course. Roston and his team worked for two years, from first light until last light, seven days a week, until the dream of La Costa was realized. That dream became reality on July 1, 1965 when La Costa Resort & Spa first opened its doors. Roston fondly recalled watching La Costa grow from a dream to a legendary Southern California oasis. After La Costa opened its doors, Irving Roston remained a partner and was intimately involved with the ongoing maintenance of the Club, ensuring that La Costa met the required building codes.

In the early days, La Costa was truly the playground of Hollywood’s rich and famous. Legendary guests, according to Roston, included Jim Garner, Jack Lemmon, Bette Davis, Merv Griffin, and Lucille Ball. Amazingly enough, some of the original staff (from bussers to valet) are still serving La Costa Members and guests decades later.

The “first family of La Costa,” Irving and Muriel Roston, are still active Members of the Club and reside within walking distance of the Club. Their children, Mike and Ellen Roston, also Members, live nearby.

Muriel Roston, a talented artist in her own right, is working with the Club’s Membership Team on re-launching the Ladies Luncheon Series with a seminar and art show called “Canvas & Cocktails.”

Kia Classic & Hee Kyung Seo Make La Costa HomeAll eyes were on La Costa Resort & Spa March 22nd - March 28th during the Kia Classic Presented by J Golf, the first LPGA event of the season in the United States and the first LPGA event in San Diego since 1993. Hee Kyung Seo, a 23 year-old golfer from South Korea playing with a sponsor’s exemption, won the Kia Classic and took home a $255,000 winners check by shooting a 12-under-par 70-69-67-70-276 and beating her nearest opponent by six strokes.

During the trophy ceremony, Seo mentioned that she looked forward to returning to La Costa-next time to relax and enjoy one of Southern California’s treasures. Now that dream has become reality. Seo was presented with an honorary five-year Signature Golf membership in The Club at La Costa.

Women’s Professional Tennis Returns to La Costa Come watch the world’s best women compete in the 2010 Mercury Insurance Open at the La Costa Resort and Spa, July 31 - August 8. Player’s such as Ana Ivanovic, Dinara Safina, Svetlana Kuznetsova and many more will battle it out during the Olympus US Open Series.

2009 Men’s InvitationalThank you to all who participated in the 2010 Member-Guest, The Invitational, held April 22nd through April 24th. Over 120 players joined the ranks for two days of golf, camaraderie, and fun. Special thanks to the dedication of our Member chairs who served on the Tournament Committee, David Oas, Dan Rose, Doug Avazian, and Dane Chapin. Each of those dedicated Members played an instrumental role in working with the Club to make this a memorable event for all involved.

Congratulations to the overall winners of this year’s Member-Guest, Jeff McCall and his guest Y.S. Hwang who posted a two day net score total of 207. Others who earned trophies for their overall play included Dan McCarthy and guest C.K. Jung (2nd place Net) and Todd Stichler and his guest Steve Sherrer (3rd place Net).

Congratulations also go to the winners of our skills contests at Thursday night’s launch party. Jim Brewer won the closest to the pin shootout with a distance of 9’11” and Bill Ewaskiw won the putting contest with a distance from the hole of 14”.

Ladies’ Golf & Happy HourLady Members: Are you interested in learning the game of golf in a fun and encouraging environment while meeting new people and forming lasting friendships? If so, our Ladies Golf & Happy Hour clinics are the perfect opportunity. A group of Members joined us for five clinics in May and June, followed by Happy Hour at Legends Bistro. In addition to fun and camaraderie, our long-term goal is to form a Ladies Nine-Hole playing group.

These clinics, which are available to Golf and Sport Members, will resume again in the fall. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Natalie Pittsford in Membership at 760.804.7420.

Family Fun on the LinksWhether your child is just beginning to learn the game of golf or they have taken lessons, Family Fun on the Links is a great opportunity to expose them to the game of golf and to enjoy some quality parent/child time at the Club. These clinics are available for both Golf and Sport Members with children ages 6 and up. Your child will enjoy a one-hour golf clinic led by La Costa’s PGA Pro, T.R. Marritt. The clinic is then followed by 9-holes of golf with you and your child. Family Fun on the Links will be back in the fall!

On the Links... La Costa Golf History TriviaDid you know that golf at La Costa started out with only 18 holes? When La Costa opened its doors in 1965, golfers were invited to experience the original Dick Wilson 72-par, 7,200 yard championship golf course which covered 215 acres and cost $1.5 million. It was not until 1973 when an additional 9 holes were added, and in 1995 a final 9 holes were added, giving birth to what we know today as the North and South courses.

Mike Farrell, who has been with the Club since 2003, was recently named Certified Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers Advanced certification by the Wine and Spirit Education Trust based in London. He also earned Level I

and II Certifications through the International Sommelier Guild. In addition to sharing his intense passion for wine with Club Members, Mike is also responsible for reinventing the wine lists at BlueFire Grill and Legends Bistro, staff education seminars and server wine training, and leading the Club’s Banquet Beverage program. He also works closely with the Membership Team to bring you fun and innovative wine-inspired events!

Tennis ProgrammingThe Club at La Costa offers a wide variety of clinics and mixers geared toward improving your skill and meeting fellow Members. From daily drill clinics (9:00am and 2:00pm), “Three & Me” clinics focusing on the big three: strokes, strategy, and court positioning, Men’s Night Mixer on Tuesdays, and Ladies “Queen for a Day” on Fridays, we offer something for everyone.

2010 Summer Tennis CampsCalling all juniors! Summer Tennis Camps are in full swing. The camps provide a great camp experience with top-level instruction. Join Skip Redondo and John Topper with tennis professionals Brian Blumenfield, Frank Theveny, Sean Stewart, and other assistants. Our instructors are USPTA certified, and teach in our year-round program. Campers will learn court etiquette, sills through drills, and prepare for a sport of a lifetime. This class is geared toward playing matches with coaching for singles and doubles.

Little Pros (Ages 6 - 7)

Aces (Ages 8 - 12)

US Open (Age 13 +)

Wimbledon (Age 13+)

Camp Sessions:

*Designates the only sessions offered for Tots, ages 4 - 5 years.

Morning Camps: 9:00am - Noon (Monday - Friday)

Ages 6 - 11 years. Tots 4 - 5 years offered sessions 2, 5, & 8 only. Beginner to Intermediate.

Member Price: $180 | Guest Price: $225

Afternoon Camps: 4:00pm - 6:00pm (Monday - Friday)

Ages 8 - 18 years. Drills and Match-play (participants must be able to serve from baseline consistently).

Member Price: $100 | Guest Price: $120

Tennis LeaguesUSTA Women’s Fall League starts this September, and we’re looking for ladies interested in playing. There will be ladies A, BB, B and CC teams. Please contact the Tennis Pro Shop at 760.931.7501 for information on qualifying for and joining La Costa’s USTA League.
