golf renovation Diaryby STeve auckland, GOlf SuperinTendenTFebruary 22, 2011 We are off to the races! We received the grading permit from the city of Carlsbad that allows Aspen Golf to begin the earthwork and create the features (bunkers, mounding, tees, green site). The architect and contractor are working with the existing land and are upgrading the original design. Part of the permit requires erosion control protection. Aspen Golf will install silt fencing that will protect the property during rain events.

March 4, 2011 Last week, the construction started on the re-design of the tees on 7 North. These have been completed and are now ready for sod These tees will sit now until irrigation crew come in and install sprinklers around the tees. Drainage work continues up the 7th fairway as the infrastructure or main carrier pipes of the drains are being installed with basins that will allow the water to get off the playing surface quickly, rather than running across the fairways to drainage outlets.

The 7th green has also been removed and reshaped. As this work in the green area is going on, the equipment operator is also working on the bunker complex around the green. With the wet weather over the past weekend Aspen golf will continue its focus in smaller areas allowing the soil to dry out. Progress continues.

March 16, 2011 Aspen Golf now has crews working across several holes, including 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. These crews specialize in different aspects of the construction. i.e. greens construction, tee construction, bunker construction, drainage, irrigation, demolition of cart path, fairway rotivation and prep. The 7th green has all the sub surface drainage in, and the sand is now being placed in the shell. Fairways are all roughed in and the bunkers have been shaped!

We still have a few remaining items to do on the 7th hole once the soil temperatures are ideal, including installing the irrigation, adding the sand cap to the fairways that improves drainage, bunker sand, sod on what has been worked up and seeding the green.

March 23, 2011 Three greens have now been approved for drainage and mix. The 7th Hole remains relatively unchanged, 8 is bigger with several shelves and the 9th Hole has slightly less slope. The green on the 6th Hole is being prepared as is Hole 10 for approval by architects Damian Pascuzzo and Jeff Brauer later this week.

The bunkers have all been shaped in on 7, 8 and 9 and just waiting for drainage to be installed. The existing lake on Hole 9 has been enlarged by ¼ of an acre! This addition changed the hole in that the golfer will no longer be able to carry the lake. It makes this hole a much longer dog leg right. The mainline irrigation continues to be installed on the above mentioned holes. Most of the mainline is 6” and 8’’ in size. The Aspen irrigation crew gets a workout every day lifting and moving this heavy pipe. Everyone is looking forward to what golf will look like at La Costa in the near future!

golf policy Letter reminderWe are in the early stages of a very exciting time as we begin the golf renovation project. With this improved product, it is important that we all do our part to protect and preserve the quality of the playing surfaces and surrounding areas by observing Club Policies and golf etiquette. The Club will assist in this process through comprehensive training and empowerment of our course marshals and golf staff. We have also employed private security on a regular basis to address trespassers such as dog walkers, joggers and bicyclists on the golf courses.

The Club, along with the Golf Advisory Board, will implement a progressive form of discipline, with a written warning for a first infraction, suspension of playing privileges for a determined period for a second infraction, and further incidents will mandate the suspension Club usage privileges.

Some examples of what would constitute a violation include:

• Failure to observe cart path restrictions or driving carts through or over ropes to access fairways

• Carts driven in close proximity to greens or greenside bunkers

• Playing holes out of sequence and interfering with or cutting in front of other Club members

• Carts parked on or near tee boxes and on turfgrass rather than cart path

• Repeated failure to fix divots and ball marks and rake bunkers

• Parking golf carts on the practice tee

• Thank you for your support!

Meet the pros! T.R. Marritt, PGA Golf Pro - La Costa Golf Academy

My name is T.R. Marritt. I was born and raised in a one golf course town called Williams Lake in British Columbia, Canada. I attended high school in Vancouver then went to the University of British Columbia for a Bachelor of Commerce degree. After learning golf at the age of ten, I loved playing competitively. I played junior, high school, college, amateur, and then professional tournaments. I played professional golf for 13 years following university. One tour led to another that led me to La Costa, where I played local tours until I turned to my present passion of teaching golf. Please let me know how I can help you with your game!

www.trmarritt.com or 760.274.7147.

Chris Mayson, PGA Golf Pro - La Costa Golf Academy

I was born in England and was hooked on golf when I made my first hole in one at the age of 8. At University I became the first ever Big Ten freshman of the year for Purdue, where I also received All Big Ten honors and a 7th place finish in the 2002 NCAA Championships.

Since coming to La Costa, I have been fortunate enough to work with some of the best juniors, college students and professional players in the world. In the last 3 years I have sent kids on golf scholarships to Stanford, UCLA, Oregon, UNLV, Washington, Purdue, Pepperdine and SDSU to name a few. Most recently, my time has been spent traveling the professional circuits and working with golf greats such as David Bradshaw and LPGA star In-Kyung Kim.

I love teaching and being at La Costa, and this is mainly in part to all the staff and members at the facility. To book a lesson with Chris you can go to his website at www.chrismaysongolf.com.
