COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER 10 JULY 2013

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

William Butler Yeats

William Butler Yeats got it right; true education ignites a passion that should be carried on right through our lives. Too often we regard education as providing us with a body of knowledge, but in this age when almost any knowledge is available at our finger tips, the passion to pursue something is more important than the mere acquisition of knowledge.

Too often young people have dreams when they are young but these are slowly extinguished on the altar of ‘common sense’, and an ordinary life follows. Schools, parents, teachers and families need to encourage

young people to dream, think big and pursue their dreams. Years ago I took a Year 10 class to Naiad Boats in Picton. The designer and owner of the firm was Steve Schmidt, and his message to my class was clear; “You can work to live or you can live to work. I live to work!” When we ignite the flame and enable young people to discover their passion we start them on an exciting journey where they will live to work, only it won’t be ‘work’ to them! “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

AUTHENTICITY OF STUDENT WORK Students are encouraged to use a range of sources when preparing assignments. However, the final work that is handed in for an assessment must be the student’s own, not copied from other sources. Any quotes taken from other sources must be formally acknowledged.

All cases of students suspected of handing in work that is not their own will be investigated. If a student has handed in work that is not their own they will not receive any credit for that assessment, and the Principal’s

Nominee and the student’s parents will be notified.

If a student knowingly allows another student to copy their work and submit it for assessment, their work also will not receive any credits.

Where there is doubt as to whether the work is the student’s, they may be asked to attain the standard in a controlled situation, e.g. in front of the teacher or HOD.

YEAR 13 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS To qualify for participation in Graduation, each Y13 student must complete by Term 4 (from internal credits and projected external credits from the trial exams):

12 L3 Bible credits, and 60 L3 NCEA credits or meet the UE requirements

A graduation class list will be published Week 1 of Term 4. Y13 students not on the list may apply in writing to Mr Walsh, giving academic reasons why they should be allowed to graduate. Graduation weekend is 1st and 2nd of November.

YEAR 13 LEAVERS’ BANQUET The Board sanctioned this annual event a few years ago on the understanding that it would be a Year 13 event; therefore, the whole evening will be focused on the Year 13 group. (However, Year 12s will also have the opportunity to attend – see note below.) This will be held on 22 September and is an occasion for our Year 13 students to celebrate the time they have spent at LAC, at a stage in their lives when they are planning their future careers and their destinations for 2014. Note: Space will be limited to around 130 people, and preference will be given to Year 13 students and their partners, then to Year 12s who are leaving LAC at the end of 2013, and then to other Year 12 students who may wish to attend.

ATTENDANCE DUES Thank you to all those parents ensuring their Attendance Dues are paid on time. The collection rate this year is the best we have seen and the proprietors are delighted with this improvement. It enables them to do a lot more with school property. The proprietors are insisting on payment at least a term in advance or an automatic payment that pays the Dues in full before the end of the school year.

BIBLE IN SCHOOLS Each week Jaydene Tesese and Faithful Te Puni are among a group of LAC students who are part of the 'Bible in Schools' programme. This gives our students the opportunity to regularly share with primary students from other schools, many of whom would not hear the Bible story unless our students went into their school. This picture shows them working with some younger students at Kairanga School.

CONGRATULATIONS, ALEXANDRA! Alexandra van den Brink (Year 12) has been selected to take part in the Regional (Lower North Island) Highland Dance Group. She has also been asked to be part of the NZ Dance Academy going to the Virginia Tattoo in the USA next year.

‘BRAINWAVE TRUST’ AT LAC For the third year running, Pauline Allen from Brainwave Trust has presented to our Year 9-13 students. LAC has been a pilot school for this high school programme which focuses on brain development from conception to three years of age. Students and teacher alike enjoy the lessons – a series of three for each class – internalising life-long knowledge and beginning to better understand empathy. This year Pauline presented NZ-specific case studies (along with research and interactive resources) where a child’s brain development was impacted negatively. Often we think that the ‘culprits’ are drugs and alcohol; however, neglect and stress are some of the biggest offenders in impeding brain development. We look forward to an ongoing relationship with Pauline and Brainwave trust. The photo at left shows the LAC chaplain, Kevin Gredig.

SPEC CAMP The camp was May 13-15, staying at a bach at Motuoapa Bay, Taupo. This was the first SPEC camp and included visits to Tongariro Trout Centre, Rock Climbing, walk around Lake Rotopounamu, Earnest Kemp cruise on Lake Taupo, Volcanic Activity Centre and Waiouru Army Museum and some night time cat fishing.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! LAC OUTREACH PROJECT

Year 9 Bible students Kaylah McKinnon-Peel, Dorcas Paulson-Wilson and Sjaylah Grayson have been collecting cans as part of the ‘Love in Action – The Good Samaritan’ unit. The collected goods will be donated to the Salvation Army. The Term 3 project will be to collect clothes for all ages, shapes and sizes so that all can be a little warmer! Thanks to the students for their great support so far.

SPORTS REPORT

More Girls Engaged in Sport

Every year we complete a NZSSSC Census which indicates the types of sport we offer, the number of participants in each and their gender. We then identify certain areas to focus on and set goals for our school sports plan and Sport Manawatu. During a LAC 2013 mid-year census, statistics indicated that girls now show higher levels of involvement and participation than the boys, and that overall mid-year student participation for 2013 is already higher than that of 2012! Some figures to illustrate: 2012 2013 Number of sports offered 16 17 % female school reps 41% 57% % male school reps 56% 49% Total school reps 48% 53%

Reasons why there has been such a good increase in girls’ participation are numerous. Girls are more involved in volunteer roles, for example as score-bench helpers at basketball matches. Girls take on the roles of assistants to coaches, for example as with our girls’ soccer team. There has also been an increase in the number of teams in certain girls’ sports, for example, we have one senior girls’ hockey team, one girls’ soccer team, but three girls’ indoor netball teams (Junior, Y10 and Senior).

Sports Offered for Term 3

*Lunchtime Indoor Soccer *Bocce *Hockey *Soccer *Table Tennis *Basketball *Badminton *Chess

* Lunchtime Multisport

DRAFT BOARD OF TRUSTEES’ POLICIES FOR CONSULTATION

The Board will be meeting on 1 August to adopt this.

If you want to make a submission please ensure you send your comments to

[email protected] before 30 July.

In a new approach to handling policies and procedures at LAC, the Board of Trustees is putting out for consultation its new policies. Instead of a wide range of individual policies, the number of policies is being reduced to eight broad ones. These are: Policy 1 Curriculum Policy 2 Planning, Assessment & Self-Review Policy 2A Reporting of National Standards Policy 3 Personnel Policy 4 Financial and Property Management

Policy 5 Health and Safety Policy 6 Legislative Compliance Policy 7 Board of Trustees Policy 8 Special Character

Throughout the policies are links to the documentation that explains our procedures, rules and expectations. It is proposed that the documentation will be presented to the Board at the start of each year for it to ratify any proposed changes and confirm the procedures, rules and expectations on an annual basis. This method will enable us to keep our policies and procedures up to date. Among the documents reviewed each year are: LAC Student Handbook LAC Staff Handbook LAC Charter LAC Self-Review Handbook

Health and Safety documentation EOTC Handbook Student Subject Options NQF Student Handbook

You are invited to go over our Draft Policies and all the associated links. If you have any questions or suggestions for the Board please email these to [email protected]. The Board will consider all submissions at its meeting on 1 August.

The following link will take you to our new policies:

CAREERS PLANNING As we end another term, almost all of our Year 13 students have met with the Careers Adviser, Catherine Straman, to gain a ‘snapshot’ of

where they are in terms of their career plans. In the meeting each student completed a survey and the data is now being collated to

provide a guide as to how to support our 2013 school leavers prior to leaving LAC. A web page has been set up for the Year 13 students

at www.careerplanlac.weebly.com. It will be an online page they can use to check for university information, general vocational

pathway information and other helpful web links which will keep them well informed of the choices available. This is in addition to

daily notices and general information available from the careers office. All Year 13 students have been encouraged to do some personal

research over the break and to discuss their career/study options with parents and family. Term three will be a busy term academically

and can be a very emotionally time for Year 13s as they contemplate ‘life after school’. Parents are very welcome to talk to the school’s

Careers Adviser if they want any tips or ideas about how to help their students decide what they will do once school ends. Contact:

Catherine Straman at [email protected] or 06 3541059 ext. 729.
