Welcome back to Term 3 and a special welcome to our 8 new families. It was great to see so many smiling faces on Tuesday morning.

While your children enjoyed an extra day’s break, our teachers had a productive student-free day on Monday. As part of our Strategic Plan, we completed some in-depth planning of a teacher Peer Observation program. Last term, teachers started visiting classrooms to observe each other teaching. On Monday, we developed and documented the protocols around this initiative, which will now involve a feedback session with a colleague after the classroom observation. Peer Observation is recommended as one way of improving teacher practice and student learning.

As we had divided our School Review Professional Learning day into two half-days, the second part of Monday was spent with a consultant as part of the review. Our staff have been envisioning the future for Laburnum Primary School. This work continued at Tuesday’s staff meeting and will resume on August 14.

We are also keen to gather parent and student opinion on the next stage of the school’s development. The same consultant will conduct parent forums on Wednesday, September 6. Please keep this afternoon or evening free - more details will follow soon.

During the break, we undertook some significant work on our facilities. Drainage lines and pits were positioned in the oval to remove surface water. The staff car park fence was installed and the gates should be fitted soon. The hall floor was resurfaced with new basketball lines and looks fantastic. We thank families who contributed to the Building Fund, which provided the monies for this upgrade.

Finally, we hope to see many parents at next week’s parent teacher meetings. The focus of these meetings is on the ‘next steps’ in your child’s learning, which were included in their recent report. Please remember you are always welcome to make an appointment with your child’s teacher to discuss their learning or any concerns.

Kim, Jean and Brent

Library News We have had a great start to the term and it has been wonderful to see so many students and families utilising the library before school. Not only are we seeing students returning and borrowing books before school but many students are bringing family members in to build with our construction blocks, play chess, draw and read together.

There are no formal library sessions for Prep and Grade One students in Term 3, so students are encouraged to return and borrow books before school and at lunchtimes.

Our library is open every morning before school from 8.45 am -9.00 am and Monday, Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime from 1.25pm – 1.50pm.

Story time We are offering special story time sessions to Grade Prep and One students every Tuesday lunchtime during Term 3 from 1.10 – 1.25 pm. These sessions will be taken by our fabulous Grade 6 library leaders where they will read and talk about books from our new arrivals area. Our story time sessions begin Tuesday 25th July. An announcement will be made to remind Prep and Grade One students to come to the library if they wish. We look forward to seeing you there .

Student Welfare section

We are continuing to expand the student welfare section in the library this year. It is located near the double sliding doors and contains many resources for parents to borrow, including books offering advice and suggestions on different aspects of parenting. We also have a variety of books about different welfare issues which you can read with your children. Please feel free to come and browse.

Thank you Thankyou also to our wonderful parent volunteers, Karen, Dim, Sumei, Esther, Trinity, Sharon, and Julie who do so many different and varied tasks in our library. You are amazing and our school library could not run without you.

I would also like to thank the Weir and Fulton families who donated a large number of pre loved books to our library. Your generosity is very much appreciated.

And finally “If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” Roald Dahl

Thank you

Wendy Keogh

Parent’s Group News

Ivan’s Pies – Pie Drive Once again we are running the very popular Pie Drive as a fundraising event with the school receiving $2.50 from the standard/family size pies and $1.50 from the party size. The delicious pies, both sweet and savoury, are provided by Ivan’s Gourmet Pies and are just the thing for these cold winter evenings. Order forms have been sent home in hard copy; you can find an electronic copy at the end of this newsletter - so simply place your order by Friday 28th July at the office and then be ready to collect your pies, quiches or sausage rolls from the canteen after school on Thursday 10th August, between 3.00pm and 4.00pm.

Woolworths Earn & Learn Program 2017 The Woolworths Earn and Learn Program is back and it is now easier than ever to earn valuable resources for our school such as supplies for classrooms, the library and our music, sports and science programs.

It's simple to participate. From Wednesday 26th July to Tuesday 19th September 2017, when you shop at Woolworths you can collect Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers from the checkout operator or through an online order and place them on a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet. There will be one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco, and gift cards). Once completed, simply place the Sticker Sheet in the Collection Box, either at the school office or at your local Woolworths.

In previous years, our school community has been very successful in collecting 100s of stickers, which we have been able to redeem for valuable education resources. Don’t forget to involve family and friends in the program if they are shopping at Woolworths!

80s/90s Party Night – Friday 27th October Stay tuned for more information about our Social Night for parents with an 80s/90s theme. These nights are always a lot of fun with dressing up (optional of course, but I think we can all put together a good 80s or 90s outfit if we try) and lots of dancing to all those hit tunes! Put the date in your diary and stay tuned for more details.

Uniform Shop The Uniform Shop including second hand uniforms is open fortnightly on Wednesday mornings from 8.45am – 9.30am in the odd numbered school weeks i.e. Weeks 1, 3, 5 etc. The shop is next open on August 2nd (Week 3 of Term 3). You can place a uniform order at the Office at any time (which is the preferred method for purchasing), and this will be filled on a weekly basis and delivered to your child’s classroom.

Second-Hand Uniforms The Second-hand Uniform Shop operates as a cash only enterprise. Thank you to everyone who has donated uniforms however we are unable to take any more non-school branded items, such as those from Target, Big W etc.

If anyone has any washed school items especially in small sizes they would be much appreciated, as the cupboards are bare.
