The power of Lion Precision and IBS Precision Engineering has been for more than ten years the European specialist of measurement and precision engineering, in the micrometer and nanometre field and has joined forces with a strategic partner: Lion Precision. This American company is a leader in the conception, manufacturing and use of noncontact measurement system. The high performance design of these products uses capacitive and inductive technologies (Eddy current). Lion Precision is number one of the spindle measurement market as well as one of the main suppliers of semi-conductors processing, hard disk drive and automotive industries. We are the European distributor and development partner for this American company. It’s back in 1995 when Lion Precision proposed its first label sensor with the launch of the LRD 2100, also working on clear labels.

FAQ We have combined here the most frequently asked questions on label sensors. If you cannot find the information you’re looking for, do not hesitate do ask us.

POSSIBILITIES What is the overall registration accuracy? Typical registration accuracy of LRD sensors is better than 0.4mm. What are the differences (and similarities) between all the proposed sensors? For a quick comparison please refer to the “quick LRD selection table” on page 3. SETTINGS I have adjusted my LRD2100 or LRD3100 sensor and it doesn't work anymore - how do I start over? Adjustments have a total range of 4 turns (LRD2100 and LRD3100). Centre all adjustments by turning them four turns clockwise, then two turns counter-clockwise. Then go through the setup procedure from the start. How do I setup the sensor? Setup for each sensor model is slightly different. View the manual for your model of sensor. WORKING LRD6100: I have a label with metal around the perimeter. What does the setup indicator look like during operation when properly setup? Labels with metal area should have the LABEL adjustment set while sensing a non-metallic part of the label. When properly adjusted the setup indicator will indicate LABEL during the non-metallicpart of the label, WEB during the gap between labels, and probably be all the way to the edge during the metallic portion. LRD6110/6100: Why does the light on the bar graph move when I push on the sensor and does this relate to accuracy? The amount of gap between the sensor and the base plate is a critical part of the label measurement. When the sensor is pushed on, the gap is changed. This gap change affects the output. With a properly adjusted sensor, this does not affect accuracy. Avoid setting the LABEL adjustment to maximum to prevent any errors from this source. Does the whole label have to be under the sensor? No. But for best results, as much of the label as possible should be under the sensor. Labels smaller than the sensor area should be centered under the sensor area. I have unpredictable, mistriggering of my sensor? Make sure the polarity select wire is connected to +V in or ground. If this wire is unconnected, electrical noise can cause a mistrigger of the sensor. If it is connected, try changing it to the other connection (i.e. if it's grounded, connect it to +V). If your sensor is an LRD2100, or LRD3100, metallic material in the label or the label printing media can cause extra triggers of the sensor. Metallic labels should be sensed with an LRD6110 or UltraLRD.

Page 13

What about splices? For a complete presentation see the note dedicated to this subject. Page 1 is for LRD2100 and LRD3100 models. Page 2 is for LRD6100 and LRD6110 models. Can I detect the location of a label on a container? No, the sensor is designed to detect labels on a web as it passes through the sensor's gap. Do I have to use the baseplate? The 2100, 3100, 4100, 5100, 6110 sensors need a grounded reference surface behind the labels. The built-in base plate can be removed and another surface can provide this reference. The only requirements for the surface are for it to be conductive, grounded, and within 0.25" from the sensor surface. For the LRD6110, consistent gap is more critical to accuracy. If the original baseplate is not used, the substitute reference surface must provide a stable gap. Vibration or thermal growth relative to the sensor will introduce a potential error or require more frequent re-adjustment. ELECTRICITY Are the outputs protected? Outputs are short circuit protected. Voltages over 100V may exceed the protection capacity and damage the sensor. What is the standard consumption of the sensor? All sensors have a maximum standard consumption of 50mA. Does the sensor works with 12VCC? Yes. The sensor works with input voltage in DC current in the range from 11V to 30V. An optimal working is obtained with a voltage of 24VCC.
