WHMIS SYMBOLS
• WHMIS symbols were developed to standardize the labeling of dangerous materials used in all workplaces, including schools
COMPRESSED GAS• product held under pressure
• do NOT puncture or store it near a heat source
• examples:- propane canisters- oxygen tanks- helium tanks
FLAMMABLE/COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL
• products that will burn or catch fire easily
• keep away from flames
• examples:- acetone- magnesium- sodium
OXIDIZING MATERIAL
• products that promote the combustion (burning) of another material
• examples:- hydrogen peroxide- potassium permanganate
POISONOUS MATERIALS CAUSING OTHER TOXIC EFFECTS
• products whose health effects generally appear over time following one or several exposures
• examples:– Asbestos– Lead– mercury
POISONOUS MATERIALS CAUSING IMMEDIATE SERIOUS TOXIC EFFECTS
• products that can cause harmful health effects, including death
• examples:– carbon monoxide– chlorine gas
BIOHAZARDOUS INFECTIOUS MATERIAL
• living organisms or their toxins can cause diseases in people or animals
• examples:- medical waste- sewage- decaying matter
CORROSIVE MATERIALS
• products that can corrode metal surfaces or cause burns to skin
• examples:- bleach- toilet bowl cleaners- sulphuric Acid
DANGEROUSLY REACTIVE MATERIALS
• products that can be health or safety hazards under certain conditions (high temperature, reaction with water or air)
• examples:- hydrogen cyanide- TNT
HHP symbols• HHPS stands for
– Hazardous– Household– Product– Symbols
• found on virtually all potentially dangerous household products
• indicates both the type of danger and the degree of risk
