EVACUATION/ SHELTER IN PLACE

Consult “Fire Evacuation and Severe Weather

Sheltering Procedures” for your building

Evacuation

First floors of buildings, interior rooms, away from windows

Designated by signs:

Tornado Safe Areas

Conditions Requiring Shelter in Place

Release of contaminants into the environment (accidentally or intentionally)

• Chemical• Biological• Radiological

How to Shelter-in-Place

• Stop classes or work, or close business operations.

• Provide for safety of all in building by asking them to stay—NOT LEAVE!

• Contact families to let them know of the situation within 30 minutes of emergency campus notification.

• Close and lock all windows, exterior doors, and other openings. Shut down fans and ventilation.

Shelter in Place (Cont.)

• If explosion danger—close window shades, blinds, or curtains.

• Select interior room above ground floor, with fewest windows or vents. Make sure there is enough room for everyone to sit, or select more rooms.

• Shut and lock the door.• Listen to radio, television, or check NCSU

homepage for further instructions (“all clear” or “evacuate”).
