Lab 3 Introduction: For the student

Objective: You should be able to design a steel section that is to be subjected to tension loads

    after completion of lab 3.

Handouts: the handouts for this lab are sheets 101 thru 105 of AISC 28 & AISC 29.

Description: The handouts for this lab are sheets 101 thru 105. Students are to select a double

angle with enough cross-sectional area to resist a tension load that is given. Section areas

required are calculated for fracture and yield limit states, from which the larger is chosen.

Bearing strength and block shear are checked as well. Given the required area, the appropriate

section is to be chosen from the LRFD manual. Sheets 101 thru 103 consist of a tension member

design of a double angle attached to a gusset plate with bolts. Sheets 104 & 105 consist of the

same tension member design from the previous sheets, but the tension member is connected to a

gusset plate with welds this time. Any assumed information is included in sheets 1 thru 7.
