Lab 03 Assessment (summative)

Milestones

Caution!!! Before you begin! When you do the lab you do not use the “Make my data button”

you just use the data files highlighted on the following slide

so your charts look exactly like mine!

You only use the “make my data button” when using the tool to

make data for your final project.

What to hand in:

• The crosstab with chi square and the Logistic Regression you make from my nominal example spreadsheet

• The comparison of means (averages) with T-test and Linear (OLS) regression you make from my continuous example spreadsheet

Lets start with an example

Nominal Example

Recidivate or Not

Notice how Logic Model Adapts

Notice how assessment data adapts

Do in program vs not bc recidivate is not pre post

conducive

Do Pivot Table, put it in SPSS and make a crosstab then a logistic

regression

Now import to SPSS and do crosstab and logistic regression

Spss assessment slides

Other than recidivate of not-What other variables might you

use as a dependent variable?

www.Performwell.org

As with recidivism, Another binary format you may notice is

yes no for drug use.

But the following (parent involvement) is not yes no…

What if it is not a yes or no question?

We will see there are 2 other options:

1.Recode into binary format or 2.use continuous

What do we do then? Since it is not nominal (binary)?

Re-code – its very easy

To recode you:1. copy and paste special values the column into a new column next to it2. Find and replace all of the other variables values into one of the 2

categories you prefer3. Then do the analysis just as you did with the nominal (pivot table

and then crosstab)

Then go ahead and analyze it the same way, do a pivot table and a

crosstab and then regression

But sometimes recoding like this does not make sense – when 7

or more categories

Lets look at the other option

When there are 7 or more categories you can treat them as continuous

Binaries added up to an Ordinal but

more like a continuous

Another example of a type of measure

Grouping 9 or higher – refer to counseling – an instance where you might recode a continuos to binary

(below 9 or 9 and above)

Here is another continuous scale

Press only once!

Note: it is OK if your numbers are a little different as seen in the

following slides

Rule of Thumb

• If yes or no (nominal) it is binary 1 (yes) and 0 (no)

• If ordinal such as strongly agree to strongly disagree – recode it to binary

• If it has 7 or more categories can use it as continuous without recoding it to binary.

Ordinal
