no other time during the year. I am always inviting alumni back to La Verne and they fall in love with the campus and the downtown area all over again. Likewise, visitors new to La Verne express amazement at the gem we have here, green and serene, moving at a friendly pace.

Students and their families recognize La Verne for the wonderful place it is, and the University of La Verne is experiencing record growth in enrollment. Naturally, we are thrilled, but we are also dedicated to preserving the environment that we all have come to love.

The University of La Verne’s new shuttle buses sport the school colors for easy visibility and play a major role in helping to ease parking by bringing employees from an off-site parking lot to the campus.

Parking availability on residential streets in La Verne has improved during the past few months, thanks to effective

measures taken by the University of La Verne, in partnership with the city.

The university secured a remote parking lot west of the campus and south of Arrow Highway, which is being used by more than 200 cars per day. The lot, which is serviced by the university’s brightly colored shuttle buses that pick up riders and drop them off at various points around campus, is at least 80 percent full on a daily basis. The university had the shuttle lot re-striped to maximize the number of spaces available for parking.

The university has launched an aggressive communications campaign designed to encourage faculty, staff and students to use the shuttle lot to help ease parking congestion in streets and lots around the campus. The university is also offering incentives, such as prize giveaways and coffee and donuts to shuttle riders. In addition, student organizations have gotten on board

with publicity to encourage other students to use the remote parking that has been made available. Finally, the university will not issue campus parking permits to new students, and will strongly encourage these new students to use the remote shuttle lot for parking.

The City of La Verne has placed dozens of Permit Only signs within a three- to five-block radius of campus, which has spurred use of the shuttle lot for full-day parking and has increased parking availability in general. The city, which planned to have the Permit Only signs in place only for the first four to six weeks of each semester of classes at the university, will be removing them soon.

While the University of La Verne will encourage faculty, staff and students to continue to use the shuttle lot for parking after the Permit Only signs come down, restrictions on parking cannot be enforced without the signs being there. La Verne residents who wish to keep the signs in place permanently must make such a request to the city.

Our remote parking lot regularly holds upward of 200 cars per day, which has made a big difference. We have colorful shuttle buses that bring our students, faculty and staff onto campus and drop them off at various points, and we treat them to coffee and donuts regularly to show our appreciation. We also try to make it fun by raffling prizes, like iPads, as real incentives.

It is especially rewarding to see our student clubs get involved and have events designed to raise awareness among other students to use the shuttle lot and to do their part to help in this time of need.

We are happy to work together with you, our neighbor, and the residents of La Verne to make this a very enjoyable place to be, and we are working constantly to develop better long-term solutions for our parking situation.

Sincerely,

Devorah A. Lieberman, Ph.D.President
