ORGANIZATIONS

Estonian Landscape Architecture Students Organisation, founded in 1999The main aim is to contribute in educational level (help to offer better knowledge) and protect

the interest of its members among educational and financial spheres.

Until founding the professional union the students organisation was the only organisation integrating practitioners and students.

Estonian Landscape Architects’ Union, founded in 2003Estonian Landscape Architects’ Union (ELAU) is the professional organization of Estonian

landscape architects.The aims of the Union are:

• represent and promote the profession of landscape architects in Estonia;• protect the creative, professional, legal and economical rights of it’s members;• cooperate with other organizations;• organize professional competitions;• develop landscape architecture education and to promote self-education courses for it’s members;• participate in arrangement of vocational regulation of landscape arch in Estonia;• propose for protection and management of landscape architectural heritage and to preserve documentation

about the heritage;• mediate the information to it’s members and publish printed matters;• recognize outstanding landscape architectural accomplishments and issue scholarships.

The main activities at the moment

In generally the Union deals with Estonian actual issues on professional field, including all the aims from the statute.

For example representing and promoting the profession of landscape architects in Estonia, protecting the creative, legal and economical rights of it’s members, forwarding the information to its members and as well to public etc.

Main Priorities

1 Working out the Estonian Vocational Standard (Landscape Architect V) and organizing the delivery of the Professional Qualification Certificate

2 Preparations for becoming the ‘creative organisation’ (with state financing)

3 Representing the Union in international level (starting the cooperation with other professional organisations)

4 Organising (EFLA) Conference in Estonia 2011? [simultaneously with Tallinn 2011 – European Capital of Culture]

5 Creating the professional registry (Mapping the profession in Estonia)6 Keep on publishing Estonian LA magazine7 Seminars and Discussions for the members and public, also exhibitions,

local conferences etc

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

There are several private landscape architectural offices in Estonia as well as bigger projecting offices with a section of landscape architects. In general the main tasks are related to urban planning (detail planning). But also any kind of landscape planning and design, including restoration of old parks and cultural heritage sites.

Several landscape architects are also working in architects offices, also in local governements as the specialists on urban planning, environmental issues and greenery. The only official city landscape architect is in Tallinn city government (in capital).
