As you drive the streetsof Puerto Rico, in the nextfew months, you will seeloads of yellowy/orangeycolored fruit that cover thetrees and unfortunately thesidewalks. These fruits areMangos! After thisarticle, Ihopetoseeyoupullingoveryour cars and filling yourbaskets with these amplefruitsthatsurroundushereon the island.Eating locallyand seasonally seems to bethe newest rage, although, natives from this islandhave been doing this forcenturies. Mangos can bepurchased on every cornerfromlocalstreetvendorsorat the closest supermarket, although when buying fromyour retail supermarket Ican’tguaranteethatyouwillbeeatinglocal, sincemostofthefruitatthesupermarketsis imported. So to ensureyou are getting local fruit, support your local streetvendor or farmers market(seepg35).

CASA PARA LA VENTA$425,000 / 5br - Beautiful California Style home in Puerto Rico Aguadilla.
This California style home is located on the Northwest corner of Puerto Rico where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea. The quiet, bilin-gual neighborhood is minutes from some of the best surfing and snor-keling beaches in the world, a sea-side 18 hole golf course, and many restaurants. The home has been to-tally remodeled with a large kitchen, spacious living and dining areas, five bedrooms (includes a huge master suite,) and three full bathrooms all on one level. The real beauty of the home is reflected in the huge cov-ered outdoor patio (40’ X 35’) that is surrounded by lush tropical plants and borders the lap pool. The pool has an easy maintenance salt-water system and motor driven cover. The beautiful, professionally landscaped yard is approximately 0.4 acres and is filled with tropical plants and or-chids, providing ample privacy from neighbors. In an effort to conserve energy the house has a solar hot water system, which is used in the kitchen and two of the bathrooms, ample natural light (through sky-lights and windows) and compact fluorescent bulbs used throughout the house. The house also has a back up power generator and wa-ter system. There is approximately 3,000 square feet of living space. $425,000.

CANTINAPueblo de Isabela

Nothing makes a place come alive like a good restaurant and tucked away in the pueblo of Isabela is our newest Mexi-can eatery, named Paco’s. This well decorated laid back Cantina, with it’s delicious food, drinks, and friendly ser-vice makes you feel at home the second you enter. The food is wonder-ful, being a fan of Chef Ivan’s for years, I know the guy has skills and he’s showing them off by not just cooking the usual Mexican fare, but adding fresh fish, steak, salads, and a chocolate crème brulee that I almost lost my fingers trying to get the last bite of. The chips are hot and fresh, the pico de gallo is addictive, and the Mar-
garitas are large and tasty. The prices are more than rea-sonable, actually I would say for the quality of the food it is one of the best deals in town, and I’m not the only one who knows it, judging by the wait-ing line out the door. One of my favorite things about the restaurant is it’s lo-cal feel. What I mean by that is going out to eat is a social event and eating here is more than just good food and drink, it’s a chance to see friends you haven’t seen in a while and a place to meet new ones. Pa-co’s is a fun spot and shows what Puerto Rico is about. I don’t know who Paco is, but he should be proud to have this place as his name-sake. So, if you are spending some time strolling through the pueblo of Isabela and you pass somebody with a full belly and a great Big smile on their face they are most likely coming from Paco’s.

If you drive around the neighborhood between the Aguadilla airport and Ramey Base, you may have noticed a large warehouse covered with an intensity of graffiti art. Perhaps, you stopped for a moment to marvel at the size and scope of the murals that cover this edifice. But what most people don’t realize is that this is one of the most influential and dynamic arts institutes in western Puerto Rico. Inside is a 12,000 square foot gallery of new art by over 50 different local and international artists, a museum pre-serving famous works by past artists, and an arts school which trains young painters (for free) in technique, style, perspective, and color. This “institute” is known to the island arts community simply as “Dreamland”; and it is illegal.

T H E O R I G I N O F D R E A M L A N D
Graffiti street art has been active in Puerto Rico since the 1970’s, but the sto-ry of Dreamland really begins in 1988. That year, a local high school sopho-more was kicked out of school for graf-fiti bombing his high school racquetball court. He never returned to school, but he did learn a valuable lesson on the dif-ference between art and vandalism, and grew to become one of western Puerto Rico’s most accomplished and prolific street artists. His street-art name is “Fla-vor.”
In the late 90’s, the mayor’s office cre-ated a program called APA “Artistas por Aguadilla” and Flavor and other graffiti artists, including his friends O-Rez and Hell9, were given permission and ma-terials to create positive murals on des-ignated public walls to beautify the city, training young artists as they went.According to Flavor and his crew, the mayor withdrew support for the APA project in 2002 and he had city workers paint over all the murals that they had created.
They continued their mural work “un-derground” and without government sanction. They knew that they would have to pay for their own materials and
that their work would be systematically destroyed at every corner, but for them it was worth it.
They tried hard to find public places that met their criteria: not privately-owned, appropriate location and lighting for dis-playing a major work, and yet secluded enough to work without attracting the local authorities. In 2004, they wandered into an aban-doned warehouse near the airport. Fla-vor pushed open one of the sliding ware-
house doors and was overwhelmed with what he saw: a monumental, publicly-owned (yet abandoned) open air space with over 7,000 square feet of pristine white walls ready for painting. After a moment of silence, he turned to his friends and said, “This is a dreamland!” The name has stuck ever since.
D r e a m l a n d T o d a yToday, Dreamland holds the work of over 50 Puerto Rican “street artists” and mu-ralists, as well as artists from New York, Miami, and South America.

If you go to Dreamland on any given weekend, you will see a cadre of young art students, just as you would see at any other art school, with their black bound sketch books and packs of colored pencils, working on new designs and getting advice from their mentors. The older artists, such as O-Rez or Hell9, are busy preparing wall space for a new mu-ral, answering questions from the kids, while the deep thumping bass of hip-hop echoes from car speakers. These “students” hold their elders in awe. “Do you know Basquiat?” a young man asked me. “Yes.” “Flavor is our Basquiat!” Other students reverently refer to him as “King Flavor” and they all agree that he is their mentor and patron. The work on display in Dreamland is vi-brant and dynamic, it is considered one of the best collections of the “West Side Style” of street art in existence, a style noted for the intricacy of design and di-mensionality of its abstract lettering. For many young artists, Dreamland and its collective are the best hope they have for realizing a life-long career as profes-sional artists. By his own count, Flavor estimates that, over the years, their work has helped over 100 kids go from street vandals and potential drug dealers to working artists. As Flavor said to me, “When you have poor kids with no education and no pros-pects, what are they going to do? Let’s give them some paint and SEE what they can do.”Dreamland is currently in open exhibi-tion next to the Froebel School, 24 hours a day and seven days per week. The art-ists’ collective that creates and manages Dreamland, sincerely hopes that you stop and see their work. (That is until the authorities shut it down.)For the full collection of photos, videos of interviews with Flavor and “the crew’, or to ask questions of the writer, photogra-pher or artists; please visit “Dreamland Gallery” on Facebook.
!Bienvenidos a Dreamland!

In the Artistic world of Omar Velázquez By Gretchen Ruiz Ramos

The diverse scenarios of Isabela inspire many. Including artists who have been drawn to move from different parts of the island to nourish themselves from the energy the air exudes. It was the other way around for Omar Velazquez, a native of Bejucos, Isabela who has lived in San Juan since 2002 who moved to Rio Piedras to study at the University of Puerto Rico. Committed to the arts at a very young age, Omar forms part of the new generation of emerging contemporary artists who actively contribute to the today’s society
through their art. His works of art translate the concerns of the artists. The sudden change in his life when he moved from Isabela to San Juan impacted him in such a way that the theme of this compositions now revolve around the social issues that are common scenarios in the urban city centers of the metropolitan area, such as social outcasts, homelessness, and drug addiction. The art-ists’ shapes these realities through different means, although he favors engraving, which he has perfected. Velazquez is one of the contemporary aritists how has rediscovered the forgotten traditions of engraving, fusing it with recycled and salvaged materials.
