ear Friends,

transformation of the Greg at various levels:revision of some academic programs, focuson pedagogy, new emphasis on Jesuit iden-tity, recruitment of new Faculty members.Moreover, the members of this Commissionunderstood quickly and precisely theuniqueness of such a Roman Pontifical Uni-versity, which cannot be compared to otherprestigious private Universities. This firstvisit encouraged us to develop and tostrengthen a culture of continuing evalua-tion and to initiate the process of mid-termacademic strategic planning.

Finally, looking to the future means con-tinuing commitment to the renovation of themain lecture-rooms of our different build-ings: most of these lecture-rooms did notpermit the use of new pedagogical meansand methods and moreover some looked abit old fashioned. During the Summer of2014, we carried out the work of reshapingthe main lecture-room called the Aula Magnain order to turn it into an up-to-date audito-rium with air conditioning... Come to Romeand have a look at it!

So we are moving ahead with a clearconsciousness of the many challenges thatwe have to address to provide our studentswith the best formation in order to be lead-ers and servants of God’s People in tomor-row’s world. �

one year ago, on April 10th, Pope Francis toldus of the importance of “looking to the futurewith creativity and imagination”. So we aredoing it since the beginning of this academicyear 2014-15 with the same spirit which ani-mated the Roman College in the past. First ofall I would like to convey a sense of our pres-ent university community. We have 2.540 stu-dents coming from about 120 different

countries: 30% come from Italy, 20% from other Europeancountries, 14,5% from Central and Latin America, 11% fromAfrica, 11% from Asia, 11% from North America and 2,5%from Australia and Oceania. The US students are the secondlargest national group with about 150 students. Out of the315 Faculty staff members 87 are Jesuits. Most of our stu-dents are diocesan seminarians and priests (47%) or mem-bers of religious congregations or institutes (30%). As thePope told us, “you bring the diversity of your homeChurches, of your own cultures. This is one of the ines-timable richness of your institutions. It offers a precious op-portunity for growing in the faith and for opening up mindsand hearts to the horizons of catholicity”.

At the end of the last academic year and during theexam period, we hosted for the first time an InternationalCommission for the evaluation of the Greg. This visit oc-curred within the framework of the Bologna Process andwas sponsored by AVEPRO, the official agency of the HolySee for academic quality. After having met many people –academic authorities, students from the various Facultiesand Institutes, professors, administrative employees – theCommission gave us very interesting, stimulating and sup-portive feed-back. The members stressed the strong and vi-brant feeling of both professors and students of belongingto the Greg as to one of the best Universities in the worldand their willingness to play an active part in the universitycommunity. They also underlined the on-going process of

The first aspect thatI would like to focuson, thinking of yourcommitment both asteachers and as stu-dents, as well as staffof the Institution, isthat of appreciating thevery place in which you work and study, thatis, the City and above all the Church of Rome.Here there is a past and there is a present.There are the roots of faith: the memory of theApostles and of the Martyrs; and here there isthe ecclesial “today”, there is the present jour-ney of this Church which presides in charity,at the service of unity and universality. All ofthis should not be taken for granted! It mustbe experienced and appreciated, with a com-mitment that is partly institutional and partlypersonal, left to the initiative of each one.

It is important that collaborationand synergy develop among you, strong inthe historic memory and at the same timeinformed of the present and looking to thefuture — the Father General used to say:“look far ahead”, to the horizon — lookingto the future with creativity and imagina-tion, seeking to form a global vision of thesituations and present challenges and ashared manner of confronting them, findingnew paths without fear.

tures. This is one of the inestimable richnessof Rome’s institutions. It offers a precious op-portunity for growing in the faith and ofopening the mind and heart to the horizonof catholicity. Within this horizon the dialec-tic between the “centre” and the “periph-eries” assumes its proper form, namely theform of the Gospel, according to the logic ofGod who reaches the centre from the periph-eries in order to return to the peripheries.

The other aspect that I wish to share isthat of the relationship between study andspiritual life. Your intellectual commitment,in teaching and in research, in study and inthe most comprehensive formation, will beall the more fruitful and effective the morefully it is animated by love for Christ andfor the Church, the more the relationshipbetween study and prayer is strengthenedand made more harmonious. This is notout-dated, this is the centre!

This is one of the challenges of our time:transmitting knowledge and offering a keyfor vital comprehension, not a heap of no-tions unconnected to one another. There isneed of a true evangelical hermeneutics forbetter understanding life, the world and hu-manity, not of a synthesis but of a spiritualatmosphere of research and certainty basedon the truths of reason and of faith. Philos-ophy and theology permit one to acquire the

convictions that structure and strengthenthe intelligence and illuminate the will ...but this is fruitful only if it is done with anopen mind and on one’s knees. The theolo-gian who is satisfied with his complete andconclusive thought is mediocre. The goodtheologian and philosopher has an open,that is, an incomplete, thought, always opento the maius of God and of the truth, always

in development, according to the law thatSt. Vincent of Lerins describes as: «annisconsolidetur, dilatetur tempore, sublimetur ae-tate» (Commonitorium primum, 23: PL 50,668): it is strengthened over the years, it ex-pands over time, it deepens with age. Thisis the theologian who has an open mind.And the theologian who does not pray andwho does not worship God ends up sunk inthe most disgusting narcissism. And this isan ecclesiastical illness. The narcissism oftheologians, of thinkers, is disgusting.

The purpose of study at every PontificalUniversity is ecclesial. Research and studyought to be integrated with personal andcommunity life, with missionary commit-ment, with fraternal charity and sharingwith the poor, with care of the interior lifein relationship with the Lord. Your Insti-tutes are not machines for producing the-ologians and philosophers; they arecommunities in which one grows, and thatgrowing occurs in the family. In the univer-sity family there is the charism of gover-

nance, entrusted to the superiors, and thereis the diaconate of the non-teaching staff,which is indispensable for creating a familyatmosphere in everyday life, and also forcreating the attitude of humanity and ofpractical wisdom, that will make the stu-dents of today people capable of buildinghumanity, of transmitting the truth in ahuman dimension, of understanding that ifone lacks the goodness and the beauty of be-longing to a workaday family one ends upbeing an intellectual without talent, an ethi-cist without goodness, a thinker lacking inthe splendour of beauty and only “made up”in formalism. The daily, respectful contactwith hard work and the witness of the menand women who work in your Institutionswill give you that dose of realism that is sonecessary to ensure that your knowledgewill be human and not that of the laboratory.

Dear brethren, I entrust each of you, yourstudies and your work, to the intercession of

Mary, Sedes Sapientiae, of St Ignatius of Loy-ola and of your other Patron Saints. I blessyou from the heart, and I pray for you. Andyou, please, pray for me too! Thank you!

DAt the beginning of this new academicyear, I would like to commend to you all

a path of faith and hope along the way to ourcommon duty as a university community.Today I would like to underline three aspects.

� Progressing from one year to anotherIn view of our academic continuity, we

would like to follow the suggestions thatthe AVEPRO external evaluation commis-sion expressed last June, when it met withour professoriate, students and the mem-bers of the administration personnel. Thevery positive evaluation encourages us tocontinue with renewed impetus.

On October 6th 2014 the Gregorian Universityopened the New Year with a Mass of the Holy Spiritat which the Father Rectorpresieded. Here we quotesome passages from the Inaugural speech for the opening of the 464th Academic year since the foundationof the Roman College

A few days ago, the meeting of the Uni-versity professoriate was held in the reno-vated Great Hall. The modernization,planned and managed by architect Stellawith such exceptional meticulousness, wascarried out in the summer. At the sametime, the work required by the transfer ofthe Centre for Child Protection from itspremises to those in Rome that FatherGeneral has made available in the CollegioBellarmino was carried out. The next fewmonths will see the commencing of the ac-tivities of the Rome Centre for Child Protec-tion, under the executive director ProfessorKarlijn Demasure.

This year we are also delighted to wel-come ten Jesuits who are joining our profes-soriate – another clear signal of thecommitment of the Society of Jesus and itsundertaking of the mission that the HolyFather has entrusted to us, and which wewant to carry out to the best of our ability.

� Taking on our responsibilitiesWe are not just spectators of today’s

world and history. All of us have a keenawareness of the current tragedies, slaugh-ters and conflicts that seem to be limitless.

However, this situation calls upon us all tolive our academic mission with great re-solve. We must be fully aware that the intel-lectual enterprise must never divert us fromthe real world in which we live. Due to ourincarnate faith in the Word, and to every-thing we share with all people of goodwill,we can never yield to the logic of heedlessviolence. [...] The current challenges require

not only considerable knowledge and un-derstanding of situations that are often ex-tremely complex, but also the courage ofintelligence, in order to resist the temptationof simplistic reasoning or slogans, whichare already too widespread. Academicwork entails a dimension of resistancethrough reason and faith. This is a long-termtask and calls for a free spirit and pursuesthe exacting path of shared deliberation.This is our standpoint as a University, if weaspire to build a future of justice, peace andrespect for the absolute dignity of thehuman being as a child of God.

� Pursuing our missionToday more than ever are we driven to

“give an account of the hope that is withinus”. This is not just a question asked of us:it is a requirement that is central to faith it-self. This is why research is an inherent as-pect of “our” mission. Research is not justthe professor’s responsibility: it is the re-sponsibility of every academic unit and

of the entire University. Academic work isalways performed with discretion, andsometimes in silence...; superficiality andcarelessness, words without deep roots andlow-cost gratification do not go far. Thepath we are called upon to follow is that ofhumble and deep thought, conscious of thefact that reflection is a never-ending jour-ney, as we are aware that the academic mis-sion leads to the frontiers of cultures andsocieties. �

Department of Moral Theology

The family, seen from the outside and the inside

On the first day, Professor Ivo StefanoGermano opened the activities by present-ing a report on familial relationships in thepresent day, underlining as a central themethat we must be fully aware of the structuraland cultural transformations of the institu-tion of the family.

In order to express the extreme complexityof relationships within the family clearly,Dr. Palladino chose to use an analogy start-ing out from an explanation of Heisenberg’sindeterminacy principle, which derives fromquantum mechanics, and its consequences.

On April 4-5 2014, the Department ofMoral Theology of the Pontifical Grego-rian University organized the Forum,

which took its direction from its title Listen-ing to the Family – Uncertainty and Ex-pectancy. This involved listening to realexperiences of marital and family life, inorder to initiate reflection at the “grass-roots” level and so to provide the means fortheoretical and inter-disciplinary reflection,which will be continued in successiveevents and projects. In fact, it is deemednecessary for the ordinary faithful to alsohave a voice in the academic world and notjust in the everyday realm of the pastoral.

The Second Vatican Council recognizesthe supernaturali sensu fidei (LG 12) withoutwhich the reflection of moral theology runsthe risk of being mere theorizing (cp. EG119; EG 133). Under the Chairmanship ofH.E. Rev. Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri, Gen-eral Secretary of the Episcopal Synod, theForum on the Family was opened with thegreetings from the Rector Magnificus andCardinal Baldisseri’s inaugural discourse.

The two days of the Forum on the Family opened the reflection on the path of the synod by engaging the “grass-roots”. Numerous families took part in the two days of reflectionfacilitated by a helpful babysitting service

The analogy’s value lies in the fact that it canbe argued that relationships within the fam-ily are like those among the elements withinan atomic particle in which, each person ob-serves and participates in the existence and life ofthe other family members, and so provides the ori-entation for the others, through the complexand indissoluble ties that operate more or lessexplicitly throughout a person’s whole lifeand even beyond.

At the end of this first day, Professor Sa-lonia discussed the idea of “co-parenting”with respect to the formative function of thefamily, showing how one is a parent in sofar as one is able to be a “co-parent” to achild, i.e. if one is able to be “parents-with”the other. One must always start out fromlove for one’s children in order to developthis co-parenting mentality and for it to

grow into a proper sense of humanity. Ex-tensive debate and group work brought aclose to the first day and prepared the over190 participants for the listening stage of thesecond day of the conference.

The problems of undeveloped love

The second day opened with a prelimi-nary report on marital love, presented byMaria Cruciani, a married, lay theologian.She related expertly past experiences andtheoretical considerations, to trace maritalsentiments back to the realm of virtue, rein-terpreted in the sphere of relational anthro -pology. However, such a positive presentationof the beauty and potential of marital loveinevitably had to be compared with theproblems faced by those who are unable tofully develop these qualities. A family ther-apist with vast experience in the field, Gior-gio Bartolomei, was asked to elaborate on

this aspect, which he did by illustrating thedifficulties surrounding the figure of the fa-ther in contemporary culture, where therole of the father seems to be undergoing akind of “evaporation”. Don Sergio Nicolli’saddress, with his experience in the field offamily spirituality, was a meeting pointbetween the two reports.

Each of the three reports was concludedwith an account by one of the married cou-ples among those participating in theForum. With these they described their ex-periences of married life and parenthood instories abounding in emotion that served asstarting points for further reflection. At theend of the activities, the «CinqueCinquanta+»family choir (parents, children and grand-parents) performed a representation of familylife, in which everyone “sings” about theireveryday life in their own tonality to pro-duce a harmony of voices. �

The 2013-2014 academic yearsaw the Cardinal Bea Centrehosting a series of meetings

that had a great impact on the en-tire Gregorian University andeven further afield. This series ofmeetings was inaugurated on the23rd October 2013, by Professor Is-rael Yuval of the Hebrew Univer-sity of Jerusalem on the occasionof the XIII Brenninmeijer-Wer-hahn Conference. They continued

on 16th January 2014 with Rabbi AvrahamSkorka from Buenos Aires (Argentina), tothen culminate in a busy round of engage-ments organized by the Cardinal Bea Cen-tre for its annual theme under the headingof “Un Libro – L’Una e L’Altra Tradizione”.The various speakers included the ChiefRabbi of Rome, Riccardo Segni, the Presi-dent of the Pontifical Commission for Reli-gious Relations with Judaism, CardinalKurt Koch, and Professor Daniel Boyarin ofthe University of California, Berkeley.

It is generally claimed that the Jewish-Christian relationship is characterized by an“asymmetrical” quality: whereas Christian-ity has its roots in Judaism, and thus isbound to the other religion in a relationship

of dependency; Judaism can be consideredan “independent” religion, as it is fullyconceivable without any due reference toChristianity. Addressing this point, Profes-sor Israel Yuval proposes a “revolution-ary” interpretation: is it conceivable thatRabbinic Judaism developed in co-depen-dency with a religion that might be consid-ered its “half-sister”? Or, drawing on thequestion which the title of his conferenceposes: “Does Rabbinic Judaism emergefrom Christianity?” Even though the ma-jority of Talmudic sources omit any refer-ences regarding Christianity, as ProfessorYuval explains, it is conceivable to read thissilence not as an indifferent attitude to-wards Christianity, but rather as an inten-tional attempt to ignore it. Moreover, thereare good reasons to maintain that while theexplicit subject of Rabbinic Judaism almosttotally overlooked Christianity, the chal-lenge the latter posed spurred the rabbis tocreate alternative institutions and positionsto Christianity. Thus, the origin of the idea,which is so important for Rabbinic Judaism– the institution of Oral Law – can be linkedwith the existence of Christianity and theintroduction of the New Testament in

Rav Avraham Skorka: centre, periphery and diaspora

It can be asserted that the friendship thatbinds Rav Avraham Skorka, the Rector ofthe Latin-American Rabbinic Seminary ofBuenos Aires, and Pope Bergoglio – in 2010they co-published the book Il cielo e la terratogether – is part of the tradition of a “Jew-ish-Christian constellation” that has seenmeetings between Popes and leading fig-ures of Judaism. In the modern era, this tra-dition has seen encounters between JohnXXIII and Jules Isaac, John Paul II and ElioToaff. Rav Skorka seems to have been in-spired by this exceptional series of meetingsfor his conference at the Gregorian Univer-sity “Jewish-Catholic Dialogue Fifty Yearson from the Nostra Aetate”. The conference’ssubheading “A Latin-American Viewpoint”also introduces another element: just as thePope comes from the Latin-American con-tinent, the dialogue between Avraham Sko-rka and Jorge Bergoglio-Pope Francis is alsopart of a vital relationship between Centreand Periphery. From the origin of RabbinicJudaism and Christianity, the two traditionshave each had to face the task of organizingand structuring unity and diversity on theirown: Jerusalem and the Promised Landwith the Diaspora; Rome with the localchurches spread out all over the world. Per-haps one development introduced by RavSkorka’s conference itself is that now thetwo traditions, which previously followedindependent paths in carrying out that task,have met. �

The Christian message does notprovide us with an organizational modelfor human societies, but it does confer a log-ical sense on the world of politics and com-pels all those who are baptized to recognizetheir responsibilities. It is easy to declaiminjustice and lay the blame on others, with-out asking ourselves how we have helpedto bring all this about and how we can un-dergo conversion. The Church has the dutyto nurture Christians in view of a morerighteous and human commitment that ismotivated by faith. As believers, Christiansmust work with everyone’s cooperation to-wards the quest for the common good.

When one opens the bible, it is evidentthat God does not like rulers, as they tendto become vain and take God’s place. [...] All

power has limits: all authority comes fromGod and no man can wield any power overhis fellow man, unless it is to serve him.However, as Catholics, we all belong to aChurch that wants to be part of the adven-ture of humankind and believes that thestruggle for justice and the contribution tothe transformation of the world are all anessential part of the Gospel message. Beinga Christian in politics means having to con-form to certain specific ethical require-ments: respect for the individual, regard forthe poor, defence of the oppressed, recog-nizing the ambiguity of wealth, denuncia-tion of the dominance exerted by moneyand the exercise of authority as a service.For Christians, these values also originatefrom the Gospel.

Christians can help to restore the nobil-ity of being active in politics. In order forthis commitment to be credible, not onlymust one’s own life be in harmony withone’s faith, but one must add somethingspecific that pertains to it as well. It is notwith talk that one announces the Gospel,but by demonstrating that one takes politicsseriously by means of one’s own actions.

One does not prepare the coming of theKingdom by accepting the world as it is, butby striving to do God’s will in heaven andon earth.

[...] For those called upon to carry out afunction that entails political responsibility,and who aspire to be credible Christians, itis fundamental to perceive this commitmentas an act of charity towards one’s fellowhuman being. In his Caritas in veritate En-cyclical Letter Pope Benedict XVI remindedus that: «Nothing and nobody can replacecharity... that loves and serves the individ-ual. This is the reason why it is the duty ofeach and every one of us to participate inpolitics: this participation can take on agreat diversity and complementarity offorms, levels, tasks and responsibilities. Theaccusations of politicking, the idolatry ofpower, selfishness and corruption... as iswidespread in politics, embody an area ofmoral danger, but none of this justifies thescepticism nor the disinterestedness ofChristians with regard to the State» (Caritasin veritate, n. 41-42).

Our Universities and Catholic schoolsneed to be able to awaken the vocation of thelaity working for the res publica. Gaudium etspes (n. 76) states: «The Church, by reasonof her role and competence, is not identifiedin any way with the political communitynor bound to any political system. In order to develop itsdocumentary holdingsand electronic resources,

as well as the upgrading of our library ofscientific journals and of our database.

The new OPAC

In order to improve the use of its vastholding of books, the library has intro-duced a new OPAC known as OseeGenius(OpenSEmanticEngine-Genius). Comparedto the previous system this offers a series ofadditional functions, which enhance the rel-evance of the search results and offers variouspossibilities with regard to the visualizationof the results and improving on their usage.

Scientific journals

Our Library has always striven to ad-vance knowledge and to aid access and ref-erence to the scientific journals it has inprint as well as those available in e-versionvia internet. The Library has a vast selectionof journals and reviews, which are all avail-able directly “on the bookshelves”. Theseare very important in numerical terms(3,703 printed publications, of which 1,337are at hand and 415 are also available in e-version), in terms of the subject matter (27different specialized subjects or fields arecovered), in terms of exclusiveness and lan-

Continuing in its intention to developthis important collection of publications, theLibrary has decided to participate in the“ACNP-Archivio Collettivo Nazionale dei Peri-odici” (Italian National Archive of Journals)project launched by the National ResearchCouncil (CNR) in collaboration with theUniversity of Bologna. The project involvesthe creation of a large database, which willcollect information regarding all the jour-nals and reviews that the Italian librarieshave. This will enable the international sci-

entific community to locate the library thathas the publication in which the requestedarticle is published, and to make use of thedocument delivery service, with requests forcopies sent via e-mail.

The database

Our Library provides several biblio-graphic databases, including those pertain-ing to complete texts. Our University seesthe advancement of knowledge and simpli-fying the use of these informative instru-ments, which are of significant importancein the academic environment, as an ab-solute priority.

As for journals and reviews, a computerapp has been created and is aimed at advanc-ing knowledge and the use of a bibliographicdatabase, as well as of all the complete textsto which the Library offers access (online, cd-rom and academic resources that can befreely accessed on the web). �

The Jesuits lived in several houses in the areathat today is occupied by the Residenza delGesù (residence, scholasticate and church).

Camillo Astalli’s «old tumbledown» house was thefourth house St. Ignatius and his companions occu-pied between February 1541 and September 1544. Itwas situated where today we find the chapels of St.Ignatius and the Madonna della Strada. The votingto confirm Father Ignatius as General of the Societyof Jesus had to be repeated three times due to thesaint’s reluctance, as he kept claiming that he wasunworthy and unfit to govern himself, let alone oth-ers, as his nature was that of obeying rather thancommanding. The saint asked for the election to berepeated and on 19 April, upon the orders of his con-fessor, he finally accepted the position. From there,on 22 April, his companions set out for their profes-sion in St. Paul’s Outside the Walls. It was in thishouse that St. Ignatius made the official decision forthe “vow of poverty for the Society” (February-March 1544) and he had the famous mystical visionswhich were described in his Spiritual Diary.

St. Ignatius lived in the house, which Prince Fab-rizio Massimi described as being «more like a hut»,from September 1544 until his death in July 1556.Today three of the rooms he lived in, together withthe brother-coadjutor who helped him, are still pre-

served just as they were. They are the so-called“camerette di Sant’Ignazio” in which another four Su-perior Generals also lived: Giacomo Laynez, St.Francis Borgia, Everard Mercurian and ClaudioAquaviva under whose governance the Residenzadel Gesù was built �.

The small room has a window, which opens ontothe terrace where St. Ignatius would sit on a smallchair and contemplate the night sky, while tears ofdevotion would stream ceaselessly from his eyes. Itwas in this room that the saint slept, had his office andwrote a good part of the Constitutions, as well as co-pious letters in which he imparted guidance, orders,standpoints, insights and advice for the governanceof the whole Society. Here he also prepared the For-mula Instituti (1550) �. We must bear in mind that atthe time of the saint’s death, there were already morethan a thousand Jesuits in all four corners of the

and expression were so shining and joyous that hewould be almost frightened.

The biggest room �, which has now been turnedinto a Chapel �, was where the saint used to receivehis guests. During the last days of his final illness, hisbed was moved into this room, probably to make iteasier for visits. This is also where he died, and thatnight his brother-coadjutor overheard him saying“Ay Dios!” several times. Polanco recounts that whenhe went to visit Father Ignatius at sunrise, he was onhis deathbed. He then rushed to St. Peter’s to ask forPope Paul IV’s blessing for the moribund Ignatius,just as he had asked Polanco the previous day. ThePope gave his blessing as well as everything else hecould give. In the meantime, just before seven in themorning, Father Ignatius gave his soul to his Lordand Creator, in the presence of the superior of thehouse and the Rector of the Roman College. A paint-

world then known to him. His surviving correspon-dence includes more than seven thousand letters �.

According to Gonçálves dá Cámara, who wasminister of the house for the last period of Father Ig-natius’s life, after he got up and said his prayers –which for him had been commuted to the Divine Of-fice due to his excess of tears - «he would enter a chapelnear his room» for the Holy Mass. He would then givetwo hours to mental prayer. So as not to be disturbedduring this time, he ordered that any messages thatarrived for him while he was thus occupied be deliv-ered to the Father Minister. This Father frequentlybrought messages he deemed important and requir-ing an urgent answer to the chapel and affirmed that,every time he entered to deliver them, the saint’s face

quiet and simple atmosphere in which the saint livedand where he governed the Society for 15 years, untilhis death at the age of 65 on 31 July 1556. He was be-atified by Pope Paul V in 1609 and then canonizedby Gregory XV on 12 March 1622.

The antechamber to the small rooms is a magnificentwork of the art of perspective, carried out at the endof the seventeenth century by Brother Andrea Pozzo,who sought to honour the Founder with images thatrefer to his heavenly glory and the miracles attrib-uted to him. �

The last room, situated between the two we havejust described, was probably used as a waiting roomor as an entrance for visitors. A magnificent paintingby Ribera, depicting St. Ignatius writing the Consti-tutions �, is on display here. On 17 July 1546, St. Ig-natius received St. Peter Faber in these rooms – aftera long absence due to his being sent on Pontificalmissions during the deliberation of 1539. St. FrancisBorgia, who arrived as professed of the Society (from1548) still dressed (due to Pontifical authorization) asa duke, with his retinue of about twenty people, wasa guest in the house in the years between 1550-1551;he was in contact with St. Ignatius for three months.Visitors to these rooms immediately perceive the

and undergo formation. Ignatius of Loyolaspent four years diligently and devotedlyaccompanying his friend and room-mate. Inearly 1534, they wrote the Spiritual Exercisestogether, near Saint Jacques in Paris. Fromthen on, Faber was able to understand anddelve into the inner knowledge of thismethod of conversation between the Cre-ator and the human being like nobody else,and had a special gift for sharing this wis-dom with his fellow men».

Fr. González Magaña was the Director ofthe Centre from 2005 to 31st August 2014. Asfrom 1st September 2014, the new Directoris Fr. Stanislaw Morgalla, SJ with whom wemet to talk about the delicate subject of theformation of formators.

� Your studies focused on psychologyand the psychology of religion. How canwe combine spirituality and psychologymost effectively?

«They are already intrinsically linked inthe individuals we are trying to help in theirsearch for God. In some ways, a good spir-itual director or formator has always had to

be a good psychologist. In my opinion,what is much more important is the ques-tion of what type of psychology we want touse. Today we can no longer use the term“psychology” in the singular, seeing as weare considering a vast quantity of schoolsand currents which do not all share theChurch’s anthropological vision, where thehuman being is called to communion withGod in the following of Jesus. So the do-main where spirituality and psychologymeet is anthropology».

� You have formerly been the director ofa School for Educators in Cracow (2002-2008).What does it mean to “form educators?”

«I would express it in terms of two wordsI learnt from my master of novices: flexibilityand loyalty. On the one hand, the formatorsmust be flexible, in other words, they mustcontinue to let themselves be moulded, asbeing formators means an ongoing and per-petual education. “Learning to learn” has be-come a popular slogan recently in a culturethat has been called “late or liquid moder-nity”. On the other hand, the formators mustbe loyal, unremitting and firm with regard

to religious values. They must firmly directthose in their charge to search for God in thefollowing of Jesus. In religious formationthere is no space for relativism or the moraldearth that is such a big problem in modernsocieties. Outwardly these may seem likecontradictory concepts, but I prefer to de-scribe this as a paradox».

� Recent events have highlighted howit is necessary to select the candidates forthe priesthood more carefully, also consid-ering their psycho-affective maturity. TheHoly Father has forewarned us about therisk of creating «little monsters».

«The obligation of good selection is onlythe first step: even the best candidates canturn out to be “monsters”. The seminaries orhouses of formation are not farms that pro-duce goods with the offer of a guarantee ofhigh quality until death, possibly “in odourof sanctity.” It will already be a great successif the people in the formation process learnto come out of themselves to become moreselfless and, through their service of others –as Pope Francis himself wants – come to emitan “odour of the sheep”.

Failure is always a possibility, but wemust not be scared of failing. As we learnfrom the formator par excellence, Jesus, hehimself had to suffer several failures in hisformation efforts. However, in the end, hewas able to transform them into opportuni-ties for growth and conversion. It is enoughto refer to the most spectacular apparentfailure of Jesus: upon witnessing the scan-dal of the Cross, all his disciples abandonedhim. However, they eventually returnedchanged, transformed, more humble, andwith more faith in the Lord. We should dothe same». �

someone to exclaim: “Yes, this is exactlywhat I would have liked to have said, butcouldn’t find the words!”. People no longerexperience art that elicits wonder, so theylose interest or indulge in kitsch. I can under-stand those who prefer to pray in the pres-ence of a plastic Madonna, rather than facingthe work of the greatest contemporary artist.However, employing commercial religiousart of this kind does not help us develop thesensibilities that best help us to pray.

� When evangelization is discussed, therole of the imagination is rarely considered.

Today the imagination of the faithful issustained entirely by digital images, whichin 99% of the cases do not join the humanperson with God. Images today mostly nailus down to our most materialistic needs

The relationship between art and faith isof central importance to human living.But at the same time it is problematic.

Here we discuss it with the Slovene JesuitMarko Ivan Rupnik, artist, Consultor of thePontifical Council for Culture and for thePontifical Council for the Promotion of theNew Evangelization. He pursued graduatestudies in the Faculty of Missiology at theGregorian University and later became aProfessor in the Faculty of Theology.

�Before the issue of evangelizing throughart, we should ask ourselves: how can wereconcile the common man with the artis-tic world?

This is a most delicate point. Firstly, artmoved out of the churches, then it movedon to the centres of temporal power and fi-nally into galleries and museums, but theseare not spaces to host life. The momentwhen art broke away from man’s vitalspace, it focused itself ever more narrowlyon the subjective concerns of an artistic elite.Today art is less and less capable of moving

and desires. By contrast, the saints are a nu-trient for our imagination. The Council ofNicaea promoted the image of the saints be-cause it recognized that this use of spiritualimagery was of the deepest importance forhuman persons and eventually could leadthem to recognizing the abiding truth andbeauty of Christ. Unfortunately, in the mod-ern era the image loses its universal and ec-clesial dimension in order to concentrateincreasingly on the individual. Often today,even the saints themselves are depicted intheir own individual perfection in imagesthat evoke sensuality. Therefore, it is alwaysthe “self” that is promoted, so that we fail toreach a communal vision. But without acommunal imagination the individual be-comes unable to create anything. People ask:“Father, how can one be a family man today?

How can I be a wife? How does one be apriest? Where can I get the inspirationfrom?” We need to rediscover images that in-spire positive responses to these questions.

� Let us tackle the question of art inplaces of worship after Vatican II. Despitethe liturgical reform, for decades we havewitnessed an abundance of debatable andcontroversial designs for churches. Whatis it that has not worked?

I believe that the problem began a longtime before Vatican II. During the time of theCounter-Reformation we went into a reac-tion against Protestantism and tended tomake artistic decisions that were primarilymotivated by a desire to do the opposite towhat Protestants were doing. As a result, welost touch with the theological and dogmaticaxes of the role that art plays in Christiantradition. This led us to disconnect art fromserving the liturgical function of Churchesand, instead, to let it become merely an elab-

orate decoration of space. This approachtended to make superficial appeals to emo-tion and to not help sincere devotion.

In my opinion, by the time we got to Vat-ican II, people were so tired of certain formsof art that we focused only on replacingthese. In the name of a new openness to cul-ture, i.e. “enculturation”, we actually im-ported some of the most biased aspects ofmodern culture that is deeply anti-tradi-tional. A result was that we continued to em-ploy art as primarily decorative—althoughnow in different ways—and failed to reuniteCatholic art and architecture with its rightfulcentre: the liturgy. What we did, in fact, wasto declare that we had a new openness tomodern culture—to “enculturation”—andto then import some of the most unbalancedaspects of modern culture into our Catholicart, above all its anti-traditional attitude. Iconsider this to be a tragedy, all the morepainful because in other areas of theology,under the influence of periti who were ex-perts in systematic theology, the Church atVatican II achieved just the kind of creativeupdating of tradition that it failed to conductin the realm of liturgy and art.

� Today the relationship between theChurch and contemporary art still pro-vokes heated reactions...

When we discuss bringing contempo-rary art into the churches we cannot affordto be ingenuous and act without judgment.

St. John Paul II also said that art in the XXcentury is not capable of portraying JesusChrist because the artist still lacks the expe-rience of the resurrection. It would be nice tobegin thinking of the spiritual care of artists.

� Let us once again return to the keywords: relationship, communion.

It is quite simply a question of life. If wewant things to change, we must start withwhat is life-giving. Just as the Apostle Paulsays in his Epistle to the Romans, it is notenough just to understand, what is requiredis the experience of love for God and for thethings of this world. A Church is not just aplace for private reflection, it is a place ofencounter, it is the place where the divinemeets the human. �

«Being among young people, both inmy own country and elsewhere, hasalways delighted me, following in

the Jesuit footsteps of my professors, the Fa-thers at the Gregorian University. Everytime they used to say to me in that fairly hu-morous tone, “You have been contaminated bythe Jesuits!”, I would gladly take it, withpride and even gratitude».

These are the words of Professor ThomasHong-Soon Han, a student in the Faculty ofSocial Sciences from 1966 to 1971, Professorof Political Economics at Hankuk Univer-

sity, member of the Pontifical Council forthe Laity since 1984, International Auditorfor the Prefecture for Economic Affairs ofthe Holy See, founder of the School of So-cial Doctrine of the Church in Seoul in 1995,and Korean Ambassador to the Holy Seefrom 2010 until 2013.

The starting-point for our interview wasthe celebration, last December, of the 50th

anniversary of the establishment of diplo-matic relations between the Holy See andthe Republic of Korea.

� How do you judge the diplomaticcourse embarked on to date?

«The Holy See was the first country torecognize Korea, starting from the beginningof the building of the modern Nation: in 1947it had already sent an Apostolic Visitor,Monsignor Patrick Byrne MM. During thecommunist invasion of the North (1950-53)Monsignor Byrne was arrested and died dueto privations and hardship on the so-called“march of death” inflicted by the Pyongyangregime. The Holy See wished to sympathizewith the suffering of the Korean people andthe martyrdom of their Delegate».

� South Korean Catholics played a keyrole in the country’s democratic move-ment. Is this an intimation of what Chris-tianity can do for Asia?

«Asia thirsts for peace and justice. In fact,despite significant economic growth, theshocking scandal persists regarding variousforms of poverty and the violation of humanrights. Furthermore, this is one of the mosthighly militarized regions in the world, aswell as one of the greatest polluters of the en-vironment. It is more necessary than ever forAsian Catholics to bear witness to social doc-trine with their own actions. This will give theChurches in Asia more credibility and right

the mistaken view of the Catholic faith beinga “foreign religion”».

� Pope Francis beatified Paolo Yun Ji-Chung and his 123 companions. But the per-secution of Christians is still perpetratedtoday under the Pyongyang government.

«The Church in Korea is still young, andits history was initiated by Korean laity. Thefirst 100 years saw fierce persecution inwhich more than 10 thousand martyrs gavetheir own lives. Tragically, under the Com-munist regime in North Korea, this perse-cution is still taking place, but I am sure thatin secret, the faithful in the North are keep-ing the faith alive».

� There is also the dramatic problem offamily reunifications...

«The problem of family reunifications isa dramatic one. They began in 1985, on thebasis of an agreement between the South andNorth, and from then on they have onlycome about sporadically. In South Koreathere are about 700 thousand people whohave been separated from their relatives inthe North for more than 60 years, withouteven being able to communicate with them».

�What is the essence of the family in Asia?«Unfortunately, the progress of informa-

tion technology and communication is glob-alizing the crisis of the family, as well asthat of marriage, and therefore Asia is alsosuffering the consequences, especially in themore economically advanced areas».

� Female religious life is very highly re-garded and respected, in your country.

«At present nuns are carrying out an ex-tremely important role in evangelization inKorea, both within and outside the Church.They are sometimes seen as co-workers andother times as the parish priest’s substitute, de-pending on the pastoral necessities that arise».

� Is the relationship between the Catholicminorities and the Protestant Churches moreone of competition or collaboration?

«The Catholic Church sees the Protes-tant Churches as partners in cooperation,and follows up on initiatives to dialogueand collaborate with all the other religionsin order to promote the common good ofsociety, as well as peaceful coexistence be-tween religions. According to a survey car-ried out by the Buddhist Institute for SocialResearch, the Catholic Church is regardedas being the most reliable and dependableamong the religions in Korea». �

In remembrance of great personalities of our University

In the few last months, three personalities ofthe greatest importance for our University re-turned to the Father’s House.

Fr. Hervé Carrier, SJ († August 2, 2014),joined the Society of Jesus in 1944 and was or-dained in 1955. In 1966 he became Rector ofour University, a role he maintained for 12 years.During his rectorate, the new Statutes of the Uni-versity were introduced and lay people andwomen were given the possibility of studying atthe Gregoriana.

Fr. Giuseppe Pittau, SJ († December 26,2014), joined the Society of Jesus in 1945 andwas ordained in 1959. He was Rector of SophiaUniversity (Tokyo) until 1981, when he becameProvincial of the Japan Province. In 1992 he wasappointed Rector of the Gregoriana and, duringhis rectorate he promoted its international activi-ties. In 1998 he was made Archbishop and nom-inated Secretary of the Congregation for CatholicEducation. In 2003 he went back to Japan.

Card. Karl Josef Becker, SJ († February 10,2015), joined the Society of Jesus in 1948 andwas ordained in 1958. He obtained a doctorate inDogmatic Theology in our University in 1967, andafter teaching in Frankfurt for a few years, in 1969he came back to our Faculty of Theology wherehe taught until 2003. He directed a great numberof Doctoral dissertations. He was director of Gre-gorianum. In 1985, he was nominated Consultorfor the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith,and he was a close collaborator of Cardinal JosephRatzinger. He was made Cardinal by Pope Bene-dict XVI in 2012.
