Perhaps it was Christian Lacroix who said it best; “People want to be in their own fashion tribes, so they want to wear the same clothes to be connected to everyone else in that tribe. But they want to be different from other tribes.” This statement couldn’t be more fitting as Woodbury University’s 49th annual Fashion Gala and Public Runway Show was centered around the theme, Neo-Tribes. The first event held on April 27th featured 24 capsule collections, produced by Woodbury University’s senior Fashion Design students. Preceding the senior collections was a stunning display of theatrical costumes, executed by The Costume Design department led by instructor May Routh and featured looks portraying Bram Stoker’s, Dracula. Launching the show were carefully selected swimwear looks produced by the sophomore and junior classes, who were mentored by fashion instructor and designer Eduardo Lucero.

The night opened with a brief cocktail reception held in the main lobby of The Natural History museum where Woodbury students, sponsors, faculty and media had the opportunity to mingle with Lisa Kline, this year’s honoree. But what truly set this event apart was the setting of the runway show. Set against the backdrop of The Natural History Museum’s North American Mammal Hall, the models cascaded down the runway delicately illuminated by ambient light and flanked by Tule elks and Pronghorn Antelopes. The Mammal Hall, which houses an array of world renowned habitat dioramas made way for the perfect setting.

Shortly after the runway show guests were ushered into the second Mammal Hall, where beautifully arranged tables draped in black, decorated with candles and floral centerpieces set the mood. Attendees were treated to a live performance by a quartet playing up-beat jazz . Guests dined on a three-course Moroccan feast accompanied by a selection of wine. The night ended as quietly as it had begun, guest meandered through the halls, slinking down the marble steps with gift bags provided by Stila in hand.

The public runway show, held on May 2, at Center Stage Studios’ was another beautifully organized event put on by the Fashion Design department. The first of it’s kind, the public show featured the same 24 collections produced by the senior Fashion Design students and included additional looks for the Dracula themed costume collection. Adding to the runway show, the night opened with the car culture inspired swimwear looks designed by the sophomore and junior classes. But what set this event apart from the Gala, were the 1,300 tickets that were distributed to the public. For the first time in Woodbury University’s history—students, family, friends, faculty and media were able to attend the runway show.

The public show was housed within an enormous sound stage, black curtains hung from floor to ceiling, an elevated four-way cross-catwalk was firmly planted in the center of the room. White folding chairs encircled the runway. The Stila make-up bar set-up slightly to the right of the runway could be seen, as model’s last looks and finishing touches were being placed.

The show also created a precedent, a final touch to the year, it allowed for students to view their collections in a manner in which they might see them in the near future. Allowing the students to see what it’s like to produce and partake in a real runway show. The runway show provided students with a platform enabling the public to see first hand all of their hard work. It also allowed for Woodbury and those within the fashion industry to acknowledge those students who displayed exemplary work. After the conclusion of the runway show Woodbury presented several students with awards.

As media sponsors of the event, it was also our pleasure to award Amie Schow and Natalie Yaru, two senior design students with The Los Angeles Fashion Magazine’s Student Designer To Watch, and The Los Angeles Fashion Magazine’s Student Designer Of The Year awards. The first awards of their kind—will incorporate both students’ collections into a published editorial to be released sometime in the coming months.

The Gala, and public runway show were unlike any Woodbury events in the past. Both events were produced by Woodbury’s own; Jared Gold the well-known fashion designer and instructor at Woodbury.

Gold, teamed with Kathryn Hagen, the head of the Fashion Design department to take Woodbury’s Gala and runway show to the next level. Having only taken over the department two years prior, the pair has truly transformed the Fashion Design program.

If this years Gala and runway show were any indication as to the direction Woodbury University’s school of design is heading, Perhaps it will take the reigns and set the paradigm of what a truly great design program should be. From the looks of it Woodbury has picked up the pace and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon.

There is something to be said about following suit and falling in line with your ‘tribe’ whether it’s fashion, business, or another—however distinguishing yourself from others in your own tribe is what sets one another apart. It’s in the details and quality of work, it’s about finding your voice and designing your own path, collection or reshaping your design program. Modern or vintage, neo or not—Woodbury is paving the way.

Creativity mixed with design aesthetics that will blow your mind is never a bad combination. With a goal to raise money so that students can have endless opportunities in the near future, on May 4th, 2013 Otis College of Art and Design held their 31st Scholarship Benefit and Fashion show. aRaising over $1 million dollars for stu-dent scholarships, the annual gala brought out celebrities, socialites, designers, philanthropists, entertainment leaders and business tycoons.

With a crowd of nearly 800, the event showcased the work of upcoming designers mentored by Bob Mackie, Mary Jo Bruno, Billabong, Christopher Wicks, Claire Pettibone, Cynthia Vincent, Disney, EleVen, Halston and Humane Society, Urban Outfitters, and Betsy Heimann with Western Costume.Highlights included projects with Halston and the Humane Society re-defining luxury in faux fur, with Billabong designing sustainable swimwear, with Disney and Pixar creating costumes for the upcoming feature Monsters University, and with Venus Williams’ EleVen designing tennis apparel.

Recently I not only had the chance to take the lead as creative director for a shoot featur-ing luxury eyewear designer, Stevie Boi and his latest collection ‘Leather’—I also had the fortunate opportunity to sit down one-on-one and ask the celebrity stylist, designer and on-air personality about his love of design, his latest collection and a few other questions in between. From social media to McQueen we covered it all. Even discussing briefly work-ing with Lady Gaga on her upcoming album, ARTPOP.

Dana Elizabeth: Start from the beginning, how did you get into Fashion?

Stevie Boi: I got into fashion just by being spontaneous; I started off doing music and making music on social media platforms like Myspace and Youtube. Then I started making my own clothing so when I performed live, I’d have things to wear. Then it turned into this whole entire production, I started mak-ing T-shirts with my logo on it and eyewear, accessories, and started designing shoes with multiple companies…and that’s pretty much how it started…

D: At what age did you start to design?

S: Sixteen…

D: What made you want to go into design and who really inspired you?

S: Grace Jones and Leigh Bowery, which is ironically Alexander McQueens’ biggest inspi-ration when it came to design. I just love crazy stuff, ya know? I always try to think of the 1980’s when I design, that’s what I’m inspired by…the Andy Wharol era, Grace Jones and Leigh Bowery eras…

D: So how did you go from designing for yourself, to designing for others?

S: Um, well I was in the Club Scene a lot and another one of my big-gest inspirations is ‘Richie Rich’—he had a brand entitled, ‘Heather-ette’ with Traver Rains and it was really inspiring because he brought sort of Pop-Culture to fashion. I met him and he just took me under his wing and put me in the fashion world. I also met Anna Dello Russo—the Editor of VOGUE Japan and she really took me under her wing as well…

D: So tell us about your latest collection, “Leather”

S: So, my newest collection Leather is all about…sexual stuff, I guess. I don’t know it’s a little freaky! Everything is really dark, lots of sheer fabric, lot’s of leather, It’s really fun in my opinion and different from my previous collection. My last collection titled: 54 was very colorful, lots of glitter, lots of color---but I wanted to go back to being dark because for me it’s easier...and then I don’t have to wash my clothes a lot…(laughing).

D: (Laughing)…So how do you feel your collection was received this season? I know you recently showed Leather in New York, and this week you debuted Leather in Los Angeles. How do you feel the collection was received and how was your experience?

S: It was really, really great, you know I’m so known for working with big stars and right now I want to work with more up and coming artists because that’s what is really going on right now.

Like Brooke Candy, Little Debbie…people in that scene…so I brought out all of these amazing, young, talented, individuals to my shows this season. Because like myself, even though you know people really think I’m established---I’m really not yet. I’m still growing I’m still learning and I like it like that. I actually kind of enjoy being in the underground world again.

D: I’m going to bring the focus in to today a bit. How do you feel the shoot is going overall?

S: Um, I’m excited! I mean I feel like It’s very whimsical…and this is just my brain speaking here---I see like lion fur, I got this faux fur on…(motioning to the all gray fur jacket by Skingraft) I like it! It’s going really great with the leather collection, I never would have thought to pair the pieces like this so it’s been really great to see the transformation and concept develop right on set.

D: Let’s talk a little bit about your personal life, the world wants to know—are you single?

S: I am single, but I’m single for a reason though and it’s because I don’t like to share things. I take care of my friends and my loved ones. Those are the people I care mostly about. But when it comes to a relationship I feel like you have to bring something more to the table aside from your personality. (Laughing) I’m sorry, my parents were military and I

just feel so differently about being in a relationship.

D: Lets talk about LA briefly, because I know you come to Los Angeles two or three times a year. Do you have any places you love to frequent, places you love to shop or spend time at while being here?

S: Actually there are so many places in Los Angeles that I like and it’s a beautiful place, but you know a lot of peo-ple know this about me and I’m not ashamed to say this, but I don’t really like coming here what so ever. It’s so dif-ferent from the East Coast. The entire East Coast period, but then again when I do come out here I’m surrounded by friends and loved ones and we get a lot of work done. We’re always working, there’s never time to sit down and get in the Jacuzzi… (Although the first few nights I was here this time I did get into the Jacuzzi…)

D: (Laughing) Oh, so you did?

S: (laughing) I did, so you know we had some wine…and enjoyed some relaxing time. It was nice. But honestly when I come out here I come to work; I don’t necessarily have any favorite spots or places I frequent.

D: I know you’ve talked about this quite a bit in your ca-reer, but talk with us about what it’s like working with Lady GaGa, Nicki Manaj…what it’s like towork with them and how do you work creatively with the rest of your ce-lebrity clientele?

S: You know, working with someone like Stefani, Gaga is easy for me because she is a huge creative spirit. I don’t have to say, ‘I don’t like something, or I do’—we just have an eye-to-eye contact sort of thing. It’s like that when I work with one of my favorite photographers Michael An-tonio or Joseph Jaso of Gossip Photography. Working with certain people, like Edgar Anthony my Make-Up Artist. We don’t have to explain things to each other it’s just very simple…

D: It’s like you have a connection.

S: Yes, connection! Oh I like that word. I should use that more often when I’m explaining myself. (Laughing)

D: (Laughing) So when we spoke off camera, you men-tioned you were working on a few collaborations can you share with us about your recent collaborations and what we can expect to see from Stevie Boi?

S: Of course, yeah recently I teamed up with Envi Shoes in which I made shoes for Jeffrey Campbell for New York

Fashion Week. I also teamed up with Luigi Sardo of Canada, I designed some shoes with him. I’ve teamed up with a lot of people and I’m doing a lot of great collaborations. But my main focus coming up is making sure I can take the collec-tion on the road. I’m showing ‘Leather’ in Tokyo in October and Santa Fe in October. In the next three months I’m show-casing this collection all over the East Coast…

D: You are bringing the Leather collection, but are you also bringing the other collaborations you’ve been working on?

S: Yeah, I am but you know I think it’s great because not just am I able to make money off the collection but also I’m able to fund future projects. I’m taking an old school approach, acting as if my collection is a rock star and bringing it to peoples personal spaces. Instead of saying, hey only come to New York Fashion Week, I’m coming to your town.

D: Really quickly, can you talk to us about your upcoming collaboration with Gaga for her new album, ARTPOP?

S: Yes, but unfortunately all I can only say is that I’m working with her on ARTPOP. (In all capital letters because I don’t want her fans to attack me anymore because of that. I sent out a tweet once with Art Pop and I didn’t capitalize it…) I literally got like three hundred tweets attacking me. (Laugh-ing) It was like new-age social media hate mail…

D: Speaking of Social Media, how do you feel about it?

S: I love social media; I think without social media we would be lost in today’s era. I mean I don’t personally know how to work a phone book, you could pay me I would not…(Laugh-ing) No you know quite honestly I don’t care to know, that’s what an Iphone is for. But social media is great because you get a chance to connect with people you wouldn’t normally get a chance to connect with. That’s the reason I’m traveling the world, calling around and connecting with people…

D: Do you have anything you’d like to say to your fans or your future customers?

S: Yeah…I’m pregnant!

D: (Laughing) When’s the baby due?

S: Today! So you better be there...(laughing) No you know I’m kidding—but honestly it’s all about ‘Leather’ right now and I’m going to continue to showcase it for the rest of the 2013 all the way until February of 2014. And at the end I’m just going to continue to do my thing.

MANISH ARORA has shown his first collection in New

Delhi in 1997. Three years later MANISH ARORA represented

India at the Hong Kong Fash-ion Week and participated in

the first ever India Fashion Week held in New Delhi, which

will distinguish him with the Best Womenswear Designer Prize on the occasion of the

Indian Fashion Awards in 2004. His successful debut at the Lon-

don Fashion Week in Septem-ber 2005, leads him to receive

an overwhelming response from buyers as well as from

the press. At the same time his creations are being sold at 75

well-known stores worldwide. Invited by Didier Grumbach,

MANISH ARORA has shown his Spring-Summer 2008 col-

lection for the first time at Paris Fashion Week in October 2007

and every season since then.
