Background

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of the UnitedN ti dd th k t i f d l t h tNations address the key topics of development such as povertyreduction and safe food supplies, social and cultural development,access to basic resources and shelter.

Universities play an important role in reaching the MDGs sincethey educate generations of young professionals in variousdisciplines and elaborate solutions and innovations related totechnological economic social political and environmentaltechnological, economic, social, political, and environmentalimpacts of development.

The CNRD network is ready to take up this responsibility and tosupport reaching the MDGs through offering high quality serviceson postgraduate education, training, and research.

Overall concept of CNRD

To support achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 7, Cologne University of Applied Sciences (CUAS) established the Center for Natural Resources Development hosted at the Institute for Technology and Resources Management in the Tropics and Subtropics (ITT).

CNRD is a knowledge hub and network regarding issues on assessing and managing the natural resources base as prerequisite f t i bl d l tfor sustainable development.

While the focal point is in Cologne there are major satellites in ten partner universities worldwide. CNRD is open for partnerships with further universities and with institutions and companies from the public and the private sector.

Themes of CNRD

In teaching and research CNRD and its partners pursue a trans disciplinaryIn teaching and research CNRD and its partners pursue a trans-disciplinaryapproach which is necessary for understanding and solving problems occurring incomplex systems defined through the interactions of the natural resources basewith human activities. The partner institutions of CNRD cover natural, engineering,and social sciences disciplines. Students, teachers, and researchers work together toencounter solutions for the most pressing problems of today.

The following themes are addressed in teaching, research, and training of CNRD partners:

Objectives of CNRD

The CNRD will pursue the following objectives:

Establish the CNRD as an international knowledge hub related to Natural Resources Management (NRM) and development

Build a Virtual Knowledge Center to create access to learning material for all CNRD partners and support all activities with a comprehensive information and knowledge management system

Create a worldwide network of postgraduate courses related to NRM and development with an interdisciplinary and intercultural orientationExchange lecturers, attract top students, form young professionals with a profound knowledge about NRM and MDG 7about NRM and MDG 7

Develop training capacities at selected partner institutions supported by key German and international institutions and create a network of training institutions in the target regions offering capacity building measures at the regional level

research thesis on fructans in the first semester of 2012.

environmental governance” from April 24 to April 29, 2011.

Two e-learning modules developed on Global Environmental Change. One of them is currently

being given.
