PREPARING THE WAYFOR CHRIST'S COMINGHve you ever served in a weddingceremony or been involved in planningand giving a banquet or party? I f youhave, think back upon your experiences. Whatone thing, more than any other, determined thesuccess-or failure-of that big event? I f yousaid "PREPARATION," you are right!

No important event, like a wedding, can besuccessful without proper preparation. Coronations of kings and inaugural ceremonies forpresidents require much preparation. Mr.Herbert W. Armstrong's campaigns andmeetings with heads of states require manyhours-sometimes weeks-of preparation.God knows the importance of preparation.He saw to it that the beginning of Christ'sministry was prepared for sufficiently. Thislesson will explain John the Baptist's role inpreparing for Christ's first coming, and howGod is preparing for Christ's second comingand what your part is in that! Notice it in Matthew3:1-2: " In those days came the

reestablished on this earth, Jesus came thisfirst t ime in order to qualify to replace Satan asthis earth's ruler. Then after He had qualifiedto replace Satan as ruler on earth, He wouldneed competent, loyal persons to help Him rulewhen He returned to earth the secondtime-persons He could teach and train now tobecome His future assistants.John preached the message of repentance forthe remission of sins. Some began to changethe way they had been living. Christ then calledthem, worked with them during their lifetime,and He will make them assistant rulers in Hissoon-coming Kingdom. rulers are members of God 's Church regardless of whether they are presently aliveor dead in their graves awaiting the resurrection.

The angel Gabriel said that John would"turn the hearts of the fathers to the children(Luke 1:17). Marriage and family relationwas a subject that John undoubtedly emphasized heavily. Mark records that John thBaptist had told King Herod (Antipas) that hwas sinning by living with his half-brothePhilip's wife. Herod's wife and Philip werboth still alive (Mark 6:18). John did not jussuggest to Herod and Herodias that it was noa good thing to do. Rather, he boldly statedthat it was against God's law! His boldness inproclaiming God's way led to his imprisonmenand eventual death.Throughout his ministry John the Baptisemphasized that he was only preparing the wayfor One to come; One much greater than heNotice this in Mark 1:7-8 : "And Johnpreached, saying, There cometh

It should! In many ways it is similar tothe Work God's Church is doing today. Just asGod prepared the way for Christ 's first comingby sending John the Baptist, so He is preparing

the way for Christ's second coming through thepreaching of Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong andthe Work of the Worldwide Church of God.The third chapter of the book of Malachispeaks of this preparation before Christ'ssecond coming. Notice verses 1 and 2: "Behold,I will send my , and he shall_____ the before me: and theLord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to histemple [the Church-see I Corinthians 3:16],even the messenger [Christ] of the covenant,whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come,saith the Lord of hosts. But who may abide the___ of his ? and who shallstand when he appeareth? for he is like arefiner's fire, and like fullers' soap."John the Baptist was only a type of thefulfillment of this prophecy. The main fulfillment occurs shortly before Christ's secondcoming. We know this because Christ did notjudge those who did not fear Him (verses 3-5)at His first coming. But He will do that at Hissecond coming!

Malachi tells more about this end- timepreparation in chapter 4, verses 5-6: "Behold, Iwill send you the prophetthe coming of the great anddreadful : And___ shall the heart of the

Obviously, God does not meathe human prophet, Elijah the Tishbite, will dthis. That Elijah died long ago. Rather, as Johthe Baptist came in the spirit and power oElijah, so Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong has alscome in the same spirit and power of Elijah.Mr. Armstrong, with the support of GodChurch, is preparing the way for Christsecond coming. He is telling people to repento change from the carnal "get" way of life tGod's "give" way of life. JESUS BAPTIZED BY JOHNDuring John the Baptist's ministry and

shortly before the beginning of Christ'ministry, Jesus came to John near the JordanRiver to be baptized by him. John tried toprevent it, saying, "Why do You want to bbaptized by me when I am the one who needto be baptized by You?"Jesus' reply is found in Matthew 3:15"Suffer [permit] it to be so now: for thus ibecometh us [it is proper or right for us] toall ." Johnknew that Christ had not sinned and therefordid not need to be baptized. But Christ insistedon baptism because He knew that it was propefor Him to do so to perform fully ("fulfill") althat is right in God's sight to do. Therefore hwas baptized as an example for all who woulbecome Christians. Jesus Christ came to this earth for manyreasons. Many of you realize that He came todie for us- t o pay the penalty of death our sinshave brought upon us. Perhaps you also knowthat He came to start His Church for thetraining of His future assistan t rulers. But doyou understand that Chris t came to qualify torepl ace Satan as the ruler of this world?

After His baptism, Jesus was led by theHoly Spirit into the Judean wilderness whereGod intended that He should be tried andtested. Jesus Christ had to prove th at He wouldrule according to the law of God- t h a t Hewould never reject God's government as Satanhad. So, while God did not tempt Jesus, He didallow Christ to enter into the greatest spiritualbattle of all time-a battle with Satan forworld rulership.

Satan welcomed the opportunity to temptJesus Christ to disobey God. He was confidentthat he could overthrow the human Jesus- jus tas he had previously overthrown Adam andEve. He would show God the impossibility ofHis plan to make sons of God out of humanbeings. Satan was determined to destroy God'splan.Jesus did not underestimate the power of His

opponent! He knew that as a human being Hewas no match for Satan. He knew that thestrength and power to overcome Satan mustcome from God through His Holy Spirit, sinceonly God had more power th an Satan. So prior

After Christ had fasted forty days annights, Satan tempted Him -working on Himto reject God and His way. Satan decided tmount his greatest attack on Christ and withis battle for world rulership once and foall!

God ("if thou be the Son of God"). Satansubtly tried to get Christ to doubt it justenough to want to prove that He was in factGod's Son. I f Satan could get Jesus to obeyhim in anything, he knew Christ would bedisqualified to replace him as earth's ruler. Byobedience to any of Satan's commands orsuggestions, Jesus would have proven Himselfsubject to Satan.Notice also how Satan used Christ's physicalcondition to try to overthrow Him. Christ wasobviously extremely hungry and thirsty afterfasting forty days and nights. In His weakenedphysical condition the desire for food and drinkmust have been enormous! Satan tried to getChrist's mind onto physical things in order tooverthrow Him. Satan may have remindedJesus that God had not commanded Him tofast, so it was not disobeying God to stop thefast when He so chose. The decision wasChrist's, Satan might have added. The decisionwas truly Christ's, but the suggestion wasdefinitely Satan's! Christ's mind was not onphysical things, however. His fasting hadfocused His mind on the spiritual things ofGod!

Matthew 4:4 contains Jesus' answer toSatan: "But He answered and said, I t iswritten, shall not by breadalone, but _that proceedeth out of the mouth___ ." Jesus Christ explained that life doesnot consist of just physical things, but also ofthe spiritual things of God-what God saysand wants us to do. And He showed by Hisstatement that the spiritual things, obeyingGod's Word, were the most important toHim.Satan then decided to take Jesus toJerusalem and set Him on a pinnacle (highpoint) of the Temple. " I f thou be the Son ofGod," Satan again said, "cast thyself down: forit is written, he shall give his angels chargeconcerning thee: and in their hands they shallbear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thyfoot against a stone" (Matthew 4:5-6). was quoting from Psalm 91 in which Goddescribes what He will do for those who obeyand trust in Him. Satan quoted the scripturecorrectly, but he misapplied it.

Satan again challenged Christ with "if youare the Son of God" in order to get Jesus to acon emotion to prove to Satan that He reallywas God's Son. By so doing He would haveobeyed Satan-thus losing the opportunity toreplace Satan as world ruler. But He didn't losethis battle. He won it!During this temptation, Satan may have alsomentioned to Jesus that since His life had sucha spiritual direction toward God, surely Psalm91 applied to Him more than any other humanAnd didn't He, Christ, want to be sure Godwould keep this promise to Him before Heallowed Himself to be crucified? After all, howsure could He be that God was going to keepHis promise and resurrect Him after Hiscrucifixion if God could not or would not keepthis promise?

Satan may have reminded Jesus that He washuman and could not by Himself defeat SatanHow sure was He that God was present to helpHim? Was He afraid to jump because He jusmight find out God wasn't there to help Him?Satan undoubtedly had much more to say thanthe one sentence recorded in the Bible in tryingto get Christ to obey him.After Satan had finished talking, Chrisresponded, " It is written, Thou shalt ______ the Lord thy "(Matthew4:7). Jesus Christ realized Satan was trying toget Him to act rashly and emotionally. Herecognized Satan's attempts to put doubt inHis mind about God and His promises and Hisown relationship with the Father. Jesusunderstood that He should not tempt God bydoing some act with the purpose of getting Godto react in a specific way-just to see if Godwould.Unsuccessful with the first two temptationsSatan tried a third one. He took Christ to thetop of a high mountain and showed Him all thekingdoms of the world and their glory

(magnificence). "All these things will I giveYou," Satan offered, "if You will fall downand worship me."Satan may have added that Jesus would onlyhave to worship him this one time. "You couldbe king over all the earth now, instead ofhaving to wait 2,000 years," Satan might havesaid. "And wouldn't it be much easier to getrulership (which the Father wants you to have,anyway) by doing it my way than to do it God'sway, which means you are going to have to becrucified ?"Jesus Christ did not argue about Satan'sclaim to the kingdoms of this world. II Corinthians 4:4 states that Satan is the god of thisworld. The kingdoms of this world were his togive. But notice Christ's reply to Satan's offerin Matthew 4:10: "Get thee hence, Satan: for itis written, Thou shalt the Lordthy , and shaltthou "The battle ended! Jesus Christ was the victorand He had qualified to replace Satan as rulerof the earth!Satan now left Jesus alone. Immediately,God's angels came to serve Him food anddrink. But as Luke adds, Satan departed onlyfor a while (Luke 4:13). Satan doesn't give up

After Christ qualified to replace Satan aworld ruler, He began to choose a team opeople whom He would train to help Him rulein the future. This team began with the twelvdisciples who became apostles. Christ expandethat group to include many others. All of thesecompose the whole Church of God to this veryday.A disciple is a student or learner. The twelvdisciples followed Jesus Christ and learneGod's way from His teaching and from theiexperiences with Him. Jesus taught them God'way of life by both His words and His exampleHe wanted them to learn to rule and governwith Him in God's Kingdom. He also told themto teach all nations what He had taught them(Matthew 28:19-20).Among the first disciples Christ called werAndrew and his brother, Simon. Andrew wasdisciple of John the Baptist. One day he andcompanion were with John when Jesus walkedby them. "Behold the Lamb of God!" said Johthe Baptist (John 1:36). Andrew and hicompanion knew that John had always said h

was preparing the way for the Christ-thepromised Messiah. "This must be Jesus ofNazareth, the Messiah," Andrew may havemused to himself.Andrew and his friend immediately left Johnand followed Christ. Realizing someone wasfollowing Him, Jesus turned and asked whatthey were looking for. They asked Him whereHe lived, because they wanted to talk toHim.Christ invited Andrew and the other discipleof John to His home. This was about fouro'clock in the afternoon. Jesus explained manythings to them during the remainder of theday.Thrilled about finding the Messiah, Andrewleft to find his brother, Simon. Excitedly hetold him, "We have found the Messiah!"Andrew began to tell him about his conversation with Jesus that afternoon and urgedSimon to go with him to Christ's house tosee for himself that Jesus was indeed theChrist!Together they left and soon arrived at Jesus'house. Notice what Jesus said to Simon Peter:"And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art

the son of Jona: thou shalt_______________, which isby interpretation, A [Peter;Petros]" (John 1:42). When He called Simonto be a disciple, Jesus gave him the title ofPeter. The importance of this will be discussed in detail in a later lesson. Just realizefor now that it involves Simon being the chiefapostle.

The next day Jesus called Philip to be Hisdisciple. Philip was from the same city asAndrew and Simon Peter and may havealready known them.Philip realized that Jesus of Nazareth mustbe the Messiah because the description writtenin the Law and Prophets (books of the OldTestament) fit Jesus perfectly. Philip quicklyfound his friend Nathanael to tell him thenews. "We have found him," he excitedlybegan, "of whom Moses in the law, and the10

prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the soof Joseph" (John 1:45).Now Nathanael (also called Bartholomewwas cautious about Philip's claim. "Where ithe Scriptures does it say that any prophet wicome from Nazareth-much less the Messiah?" he questioned. "The Christ is to be bornin Bethlehem according to the Scriptures," hmay have added.Philip invited him to come and see Jesus fohimself. Philip knew Nathanael would bconvinced if he talked with Christ.As they approached Jesus, He said oNathanael, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, Iwhom is no guile [deceit]!" (John 1:47.)

"How do You know me?" asked Nathanaelquite surprised.Jesus replied, "Before Philip called youwhen you were under the fig tree, I saw you!"How could He have possibly known wherewas?" Nathanael wondered. "God must havrevealed it to Him!""Rabbi," Nathanael said, "You are the So

of God; You are the King of Israel!""Do you believe just because I told you thaI saw you under the fig tree?" Christ asked

"You will see much greater things than thaNathanael! You will see heaven open and thangels of God ascending and descending upothe Son of Man!"Nathanael became the fifth disciple. These fivwere the first of the disciples Jesus would call.

CHRIST'S FIRST MIRACLEOn the following day, Jesus, His mother anthe disciples were invited to a wedding in Canof Galilee (John 2:1-11). I t was a larg

celebration with much food and wine, but thservants ran out of wine to serve to the guestsMary, Jesus' mother, told Him about thproblem, hoping He would help.

"Why do you want me to help?" Jesuasked. " It is not the right time for me to dsomething that will draw a lot of attention."Mary did not know what Jesus was going tdo, but she was confident that He would help

"Whatever He tells you to do, do it," she toldthe servants.

Christ ordered six waterpots, each holdingabout twenty gallons, to be filled with water.Then He told the servants to begin filling theguests' cups! What was water moments beforehad now become wine! Most people at thewedding feast had no idea where the wine hadcome from. (Only the servants and disciples ofJesus knew.) The host of the feast evencommented to the bridegroom that this winewas far better than that served at the beginningof the feast!

This was the beginning of the miraclesChrist performed. I t also showed God's greatpower and glory. It also helped to deepen andstrengthen the disciples' belief that Jesus wasthe Christ.In this lesson you have seen how God usedJohn the Baptist to prepare the way forChrist's first coming and how God is preparingthe way for Christ's second coming throughMr. Herbert W.
