Why have we chosen producing whistles? Because, as most of local people know, such whistle is a Latvian national wind instrument made of clay, which in colloquial speech is called “wind duck”. “Svilpaunieki” are common traditional Latgalian musical instruments, already well known by our ancestors in several generations. We hope that during the visit in Latvia all students who take part in the project will get such small souvenir from Latgale which will bring back memories about everything seen and experienced here.

Why to produce clay medals? Because medals are very common presents

at the wedding parties and other occasions when they are very personal and specially made.

As the greatest plus of the product can be considered its uniqueness - every item exists just in one copy with its own special design created by the client or our makers. Every client will be able to create the products himself and keep them or give it as a gift to friends or family or just buy ready made products.

Clients will definitely be satisfied with the product because everything is special and handmade.

Of course, the product can have a replacement because there are many small companies that offer readymade “whistles” and medals.

Materials necessary for making the products are very various, but main of them is clay. Then follow tools: sticks (of different diameters and forms), sponges, bowls for water and liquid clay, brushes, disposable aprons, kerchiefs and boards. As all work is done by hands, clients would be advised not to wear bijouterie on hands.

DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCTION

Description of the production   We are offering to our clients to make their own whistles and medals,

which are like souvenirs from Latgale. The whistles are called “Svilpaunieki” or in colloquial speech “wind ducks”. Process of making these “wind ducks” is very simple:

At the beginning a client should take off all bijouterie from hands. Then it is very important to wear disposable apron and kerchief, because this job is with clay and it means that a client can make his clothes dirty.

Then a client takes board on which he will make a whistle. A client has to put clay on this board and make a ball from clay.

When that is done, a client makes from this ball a little bird, but there is a condition – this bird should be with empty inside.

Now client needs to make liquid clay which is made from clay and water. A client should take a little boil with water and put clay in it. Then all liquid needs to be mixed.

After that a client will take a brush and put it in liquid clay. Then with this clay a client should glue together compound places.

Page 15: L TD. “S VILPAUNIEKI ” B USINESS P LAN A UTHORS : C OMENIUS PROJECT PARTICIPENTS OF K ĀRSAVA S ECONDARY S CHOOL K ĀRSAVA 2013

When this is done a client needs to take some stick and make with it a hole in a whistle’s tail. This tail will be a place which will make a sound.

Smaller birds will make more enjoyable sounds but bigger birds will make deeper sounds. If a client wants to make these bird like a musical instrument, he should make some different size holes in sides of birds

At the end of work a client can makes some ornaments with stick, and after that damp duck with sponge which is with liquid clay.

Then a client should wait when the whistle is dry and just put it in the oven in 220 degrees and wait when it changes its colour.

Finally the product is taken out of the oven, painted with a special colour and the product is finished!

Process of making medals is even simpler: Jāapraksta medaļu gatavošana.
